exCHANGING INNOVATIONS

WELCOME

Dear Colleagues, Welcome to the Midwest Technology Exchange (mTechx). The UNeMed Corporation, University of Nebraska Medical Center, US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) and Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) are pleased to be able to bring together this group of researchers, technology transfer experts, industry representatives, venture capitalists, economic developers, military and civilian experts to discuss the advancement and commercialization of innovative research discoveries. While this meeting pulls together an eclectic group, it is clear that everyone here is focused on one task… developing technologies that will have a positive effect on healthcare. It is a rare individual who is able to take a kernel of an idea and fully fund and develop it into a commercial product by himself. Due to that fact, our collective success is dependent on our ability to network, iden-

tify opportunities and collaborate. Technology development in the Midwest is said by many to suffer from “Flyover Syndrome”. Biotech hubs like Boston and San Diego thrive in part because they have a concentrated amount of research, financial capital, and talent in a relatively small amount of space. It isn’t unusual for a researcher and a venture capitalist to bump into each other getting coffee in the morning. Looking at the Midwest footprint of the Big 12 and Big 10, there is a similar amount of research, financial capital and talent; however we are spread out across a land mass that is over 20 times larger. We cannot leave collaborations to chance – we have to be proactive and take opportunities like this to find ways to work together. The good news is that everyone who decided to come to this conference is willing to collaborate and has a desire to make a difference. I implore each of you to go out of your way over the next two days to meet new people and ex-

pand your network. Be your own best advocate. It is our goal that you have the opportunity to “exchange” many new ideas and form new collaborations as a result of this conference. We hope that you will leave inspired by new ideas and new connections that will help you bring your innovative technologies to the marketplace. Finally, we would like to thank all of our sponsors for their support of this meeting. Since this is the first meeting of its kind in the Midwest, our sponsors played a large role helping us bring everyone together. If you see someone with a “Sponsor” tag on his or her badge, please thank them for their support.

Michael Dixon, PhD President UNeMed Corporation
