OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Food for Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark The theme of today’s readings flow from last week’s reminders of trying to serve God and wealth, power, fame, etc. You can’t do both! Still, we fall easily into this trap, convincing ourselves we can do both without suffering consequences. Amos (1st reading) brings God’s stark Word to the complacent and comfortable. It isn’t their status which destroys them; it is their apathy towards those who suffer and are in need. St. Paul (2nd reading) calls every person to the righteousness of love and justice, honesty and generosity of spirit, forgiveness and reconciliation. These are the path to eternal life wherein we give witness to Our Lord and Savior. Adoration and worship won’t do it. Jesus tells a parable which sums up what Amos and Paul call us to. A rich man enjoys the best of everything, wealth, food, prestige, influence, power, etc. Each day he passes a poor soul, covered with sores, who lies at the rich man’s door begging for help. The rich man ignores him completely. The rich man dies and is sent to the netherworld of torment and darkness. The poor man, Lazarus, also dies: he is welcomed into the bosom of Abraham (heaven). The rich man cries out for help, for Lazarus to bring him water to ease his torment. He receives a sharp rebuke and is reminded of his great fortune while alive while Lazarus suffered greatly. Now, Lazarus is comforted and the rich man agonizes, payment for his many sins. He is told: there is a chasm between them that no one can cross from either side. Realizing what this means, the rich man pleads for his five living brothers who live as selfishly as he did. He desires them to be saved. He is told: they have Moses and the prophets (God’s messengers). If they don’t heed God’s Word from them, then even a messenger from the risen dead will not be heeded. It isn’t an easy truth to digest, but it is deadly when anyone ignores it completely!
