OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark Today ‘s opening sentence (1st reading) has endured over time, ever reminding us of the futility in making physical and material things our purpose and goal. “Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity!” This is not a call to poverty, misery, sickness or loneliness. It is a powerful reminder of how easily we are seduced by the external attractions and pleasures in life, not because they are evil or harmful in themselves, but become so when our life focus and goal is wrapped up in acquiring them in ever increasing amounts. Then they control a person’s attitudes and actions slowly killing the true treasures in life found within self, our capacities for love, goodness, justice, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, etc. In a society which has bought into a “me first, if not only” attitude the continuing decrease and debilitation of life’s true qualities becomes an acceptable lifestyle. In its one-dimensional, one-way path, it is easy to see how the presence of God is abandoned and the need for God is rejected. Welcome to the chaos of our times! St. Paul’s plea (2nd reading) is a clarion call for soulsearching honesty: have we bought into the false promises of wealth, power, pleasure, status and security to the point of them being the way we identify ourselves? Paul’s examples ring true today, here and elsewhere. Only the conviction of faith, “Jesus is Lord and Savior” beckons us to “follow Him,” by living in the manner He taught. In today’s world, it is clear that doing so is a literal way of “taking up one’s cross” for it will put us at odds with what is considered values and valuable in the materialistic world. Today’s Gospel presents an account which fits the view of many, if not the majority, of Americans. Jesus’ response is a story depicting a person who has bought into material wealth and the power it provides to, seemingly, control life itself. Each one of us needs to dwell on it and draw our own conclusions and make our own commitment. That’s what living the faith means for the only thing we can offer God is our sincerity. It is never too late to find our treasure and fulfillment in it! What is your treasure?
