OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Food for Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark We easily dismiss the call to discipleship as something reserved for a special few who will be protected and blessed by God in ways we do not experience or desire to experience. The truth about being ordinary, not exceptional, is valid: That is who and what we are. The idea that those chosen by God are different needs to be buried. Throughout Scripture, we encounter God always surprising us because God rarely does what we expect! God’s ways aren’t our ways. We see God choosing insignificant persons to do His Will and God’s actions are often simple and obscure rather than magnificent and awesome which we await. If we can acknowledge this as true, it opens us up to life in the Spirit. God’s intention for each and all of us to be His witnesses and render service by our willingness to love others, in the fashion God shows us, is the on-going and open-ended story of salvation. We are all part of God’s will for the kingdom to be built. Every person God called declined, felt unworthy or incompetent. It is in trusting God will provide and be with them that they go forth and achieve God’s goal. They begin living in the Spirit, which is the same for us, if we so choose. And we are free not to. When we choose, we are set free, called to live this freedom, which is “to break the yoke of slavery (sin)” as St. Paul (2nd reading) goes on to sum up the truth: “the whole law (of God) is fulfilled in one statement, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus says it rather straightforwardly and blunt: those desiring “to follow Him,” but offer reasons delaying their doing so “are not fit for the kingdom of God.” This comes after Jesus faced several forms of opposition and rejection. The bottom line-call to faithful witness and service is what taking up one’s cross means. Living in the Spirit will demand courage and an acceptance of other’s expressions of violent behavior. Working for justice and aspiring to peace, reconciliation, forgiveness and compassion will bring out the fear in others who reject all that Jesus teaches. The cross is no joke.
