OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Food for Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark The image of marriage sums up God’s relationship with the human family. God is the faithful spouse, we are the faithless and sinful. The vital message from this image is: God will not divorce us! In every book of Scripture, we see God’s mercy and forgiveness restoring people who are beaten down and weary of struggles. In Zechariah (1st reading) the prophet restores hope by the message: “God will pour out a grace of spirit and petition” and the people will be restored from their sins. Sound familiar? & personal? Indeed! St. Paul (2nd reading) offers images and truths to reflect on, rely on and live! “We are clothed with Christ by our Baptism: no longer separate, divided, ‘we are neither Jew nor Greek (or anyone else), neither slaves nor free, there is not male and female for we are all one in Christ Jesus!” Comforting truth, as God wills it, yet, far from fulfilled when we cling to walls of separation, divisive loyalty to one’s own and blind intolerance and bigotry towards any and all who differ be it race, gender, religion, government, culture, class or status. We can spend the rest of our lives working on these painful truths indicating the many ways violence expresses itself in human affairs. If I belong to Christ, and live in the Spirit, I will always have to deal with human weakness, but I will not nurture it or use it as an excuse for not participating in the work left to all of us who are baptized in Jesus! That’s the message of the Gospel, Jesus isn’t playing word games. Those saving their lives through any means other than God’s truth, will lose it. Take a look at society and the world. Many choose to save their lives by burdening others in pursuit of their goals. It is a choice. It is death to the human spirit if it centers on self to the detriment of all others. Lots to reflect on. Trust in Jesus’ Word: “Do not be afraid; I am with you always.
