OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL
Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark We admire the lives of all the prophets in Scripture. We are reminded (1st reading) of what happens to them: they will be opposed, suffer and die, believing God will deliver them. We admire courage and integrity, faithfulness and resolve, all needed to “speak truth to power.” This struggle is endless, from the beginning until now, and sadly, into the future. Speaking truth to power will be necessary or humanity is doomed! If the struggle against evil, and all the violence in the world, in our nation, in our own hearts, is not proclaimed by anyone willing to suffer the price for so doing, then God’s Word has been silenced, removed, ridiculed and rejected from the face of the earth. A grim possibility, yes, but neither inevitable nor probable. The reason why? Because people will ever hunger for truth and meaning, even as they often pay the price, and waste many years of their lives, before they reach understanding, acceptance, gratitude and response. They may have pursued wealth, security, possessions, acclaim, control or whatever else enslaved them, finding justification in moral rectitude and self-righteous arrogance before coming to the truth that these lead nowhere and offer no meaning. For those who never realize this, their end will be sad and empty. A grim picture? An exaggeration? In a world of war and genocide, innocence being destroyed, wounded and abused, power and wealth controlling governments and policies, it is a reality which we are fearful of and feel powerless against. Yet, there is hope. St. Paul (2nd reading) sums it all up in his hymn to love which is a hymn to God, Love Itself. Love is a free gift setting us free, yet it demands much, especially being vulnerable and forgiving to those who reject, abuse, manipulate or kill anyone who loves. Being a victim for loving is a price worth paying but that’s an opinion a choice. It sets one free from slavery and darkness. It is a gift to others offering them life rather than death, healing rather than wounds, embrace rather than rejection. It is the invitation from God to believe in and live. This truth, and choice, is awesome. Each and every person is free to decide for self. Do not be afraid to choose.
