OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Food for Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark Today’s first reading is a wonderful example of what should be happening in church every time we gather for Eucharist. The people are building the city and their lives,. The priest announces God’s Word to them and how they should receive it, enjoy it, live it! He ends with strong words of encouragement to face life unafraid: “Do not be saddened this day, for rejoicing in the Lord must be your strength!” That’s true faith, an undying trust in God’s presence regardless of what life presents to us. We find reasons for rejoicing in the Lord only when we begin living His truth and promise. St. Paul (2nd reading) attempts to explain this in human terms centering on our relationships. He uses the beautiful image of the human body to enlighten us. The body is mad up of many parts and functions, each and all dependent on the rest for true health and prosperity. When one part or function weakens or suffers, the whole body is affected; we are discomforted or worse. St. Paul applies this to our faith living. Together, we are the Body of Christ! This is the true meaning of church, religion and living faith. When we bless each other, the body remains healthy and thrives. When we hurt each other (sin, evil), the violence harms the whole body. This example reminds us how deadly real sin is. Instead of giving life, we wound life. Sin goes far deeper than not abiding in rules and regulations. Sin is any and every form of refusing to love! Do I believe this? St. Luke (Gospel) presents the beginning of Jesus teaching and serving. Jesus enters a synagogue and chooses to read a passage from Isaiah. It is a powerful life-restoring passage. Isaiah proclaimed to the people in a time of great need. It is the promise that God will save, God will send a Savior! We cherish this reminder as Jesus expresses that the Spirit is upon Him and with Him, anointing Him to do all that God promises. He ends with the words which give us hope and meaning to face today and the future with inner peace. “Today, this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” Do I Believe?
