OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark The foundation stones of meaningful faith are the focus of this week’s readings as we enter into the life of Jesus ministering to the people and making the Good News from God visible, real, true! Nice words, lovely images. Do I believe? Well, that’s relative to where I am, what I do and how much I understand, accept and respond to this. These are the pillars of all relationships, be they between God and us (me), which is faith, between me and another (marriage, family friendship) or me and many others (community, nation, culture, religion, work place). For a living faith, do I truly hear and believe God’s promise so beautifully expressed by Isaiah (1st reading) wherein God speaks of an intimate relationship using the imagery of marriage. If I believe, this opens my life to powerful responsibilities and commitments. Does any marriage survive or thrive without this response? For a living faith, I need to see God’s handiwork alive and well in my daily life and in myself. St. Paul (2nd reading) simply and clearly reminds us that God provides us with what we need. As unique and different as each of us is, all of us are endowed with a variety of gifts. If we appreciate the gifts, I will sincerely and gratefully share it with others thus giving life to relationships. What marriage, family, community or beyond will not thrive wherein all bless each other with who I am? This is building the kingdom, pure and simple. It won’t happen because we worship: it will happen when we express ourselves generously to each other. That’s the message our mother, model and example, Mary, offers us in the first sign of Who Jesus is (Gospel). At a wedding feast, the wine runs out. Mary asks Jesus to help the newlyweds in their embarrassment. Jesus changes water into wine! The message, and its meaning for all persons of faith, are the words Mary directs to the servants and all of us: “Do whatever He tells you!” Living faith is heeding God’s Word (Jesus). We do so, not by knowing what He said, but by doing what He asks! It is as simple and difficult as that! That’s why faith is a challenge: do we believe in this mystery we name God?
