OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL Food for Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark Our nation is going through difficult and challenging times calling every American to be responsible to more than “me and mine,” to work for the common good of all. When this was sought, and the hard work of advancing this was done, the greatness of America shown bright to the world. When we lost sight of this purpose, and the demands and responsibilities required, we slowly but surely disintegrated into partisan groups, divisive unwillingness to budge an inch from the views, attitude and self-righteous results which separated us, destroyed any sense of community and common purpose. It was our way or the highway! I mention this ugly truth because, in its own way, it depicts the foolishness and rebellious attitudes of the peoples in the Bible! They wanted all God promised, but failed or refused to heed God’s Word as to how the promise would be fulfilled and sustained. They wanted the blessings and security, but did not heed the truth and commitment necessary to achieve it. This, too, reminds us of our recent past, a nation wanting instant gratification and everexpanding expectations without heeding the responsible choices and difficult work of maintaining a unified country and purpose. Once again, we are preparing for Christmas. Will it be the holiday or the holy day? Most will say both. That’s fine if we really meant it. The joy and peace of God’s Good News, so fully celebrated in the Birth of Jesus, is meant to inspire us to give thanks and resolve to live what the Nativity means. It is God’s love and it is an invitation to live our thanks through faith, hope and love. Nice words, easy to say, yet words which challenge us to seek an ever deeper understanding of what they mean and how they are lived. It is an acceptance of the kingdom begun in each one of us and our willing and free choice to participate in the building of the greater kingdom which God desires, a kingdom of justice and peace, harmony and unity wherein a oneness with God and each other is realized. The expectations and gratification of so doing is found in our willingness to love each other, to be for others more than for self, to seek the common good of all. It is generosity of spirit which sets us free from the slavery of sin and all the violence sin causes. It is today’s readings being fulfilled!
