Melbourne Society of Women Painters & Sculptors The Melbourne Society of Women Painters & Sculptors (MSWPS) raises the profile of women artists by exhibiting their works in the Annual Exhibition Changing Perspectives, now in its 112th year. During the Covid pandemic, the exhibition was replaced by MSWPS Annual Exhibition Online for the first time. Owing to its success and the possibility of international recognition, online exhibitions will supplement “live” exhibitions in future. MSWPS website also offers members opportunities to promote their talents by including images of paintings or sculpture and details of events and exhibitions of interest to all: www. mswps.com.au Journeys by train and bus give members the opportunity to socialise with like-minded women as they view far away art exhibitions they may not have otherwise seen. Paint outs en plein air are encouraged whenever possible.

MSWPS is grateful for the bequest made by sculptor Ola Cohn, former President of the Society for 15 years until her death in 1964. The bequest grants MSWPS access to the Ola Cohn centre (her former home in East Melbourne) on Thursdays. A regular life drawing group is held at the centre for members, and monthly member’s meetings and committee meetings are also held there. The Ola Cohn centre is ideal for MSWPS traditional annual Winter luncheons and Christmas luncheons as it has a leafy sculpture garden where some of Ola’s works in stone are installed. All these events and special occasions lead to a feeling of belonging and an exchange of ideas which is important to artists who work alone. MSWPS has been bringing women artists together for over a century and it is constantly striving to develop and reveal the talents of its members to an ever -increasing audience in Melbourne, Australia and the world.

2021 Annie Davison Oliver Award Annie Davison Oliver was an active member of the Society for 67 years until her death at the age of 94 in 1997. Not only was she MSWPS treasurer for many years, but she was also a generous benefactor.

Sophie Gerhard Judge Opened by the Judge Sophie Gerhard who presented the Annie Davison Oliver; Valda Cuming Sculpture and the Highly Commended Awards. Sophie Gerhard is Assistant Curator of Australian Art (to 1980) at the National Gallery of Victoria. Prior to joining the NGV in 2019, she completed her Master’s in Art Curatorship at the University of Melbourne, and has also studied art history in the United Kingdom and Spain. Sophie regularly contributes to the field of art history, most recently in the NGV’s exhibition catalogue She-oak and Sunlight: Australian Impressionism, on which she worked as Assistant Curator. MSWPS established the Annie Davison Oliver award in her honour. The substantial bequest from her estate guarantees the award in perpetuity.

Valda Cuming Sculpture Award Valda Cuming OAM served on the MSWPS committee for many years during her 25 years membership of the Society. Valda was widely recognized for her proficiency in sculpture using a range of materials including wood, ceramic and stone. At the pinnacle of her career in 2019, she was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services to the arts.
