BILLINGS, Mont. – The MSUB women’s basketball program is hosting an alumni game on Friday, Oct. 21, 7:00 p.m. at Alterowitz. The Yellowjackets have nine confirmed returning players slated to compete in the first game of the year against the current 2016-17 Montana State Billings roster. The current Yellowjacket roster will face a good opening test against some of the best players to come out of the MSUB women’s basketball program. Slated to appear for the alumnae are: Kalli Stanhope Allen, Chelsea Banis Schilling, Annie DePuydt, Monica Grimsrud, Tanya Petersen Hauptman, Jenny Heringer, Bobbi Knudsen, Quinn Peoples, and Janiel Olson. The coach for this year’s alumni team is Kayleen Goggins Schultz.
Olson and Grimsrud finished their careers at MSUB last season in 2016, while Peoples, DePuydt, and Goggins Schultz completed their playing career the year before. Banis Schilling and Knudsen were graduates just the season ahead in 2014. Jenny Heringer’s, the current MSUB assistant coach, senior year was 2011, Kalli Stanhope Allen’s last season was in 2012 with Petersen Hauptman finishing in 2006. All nine player’s names are stamped all over the MSUB Yellowjacket record books. Peoples is second all-time in 3-pointers (236), Knudsen is second in assists (532), while Banis Schilling is fifth all-time for a single season in field goal percentage at .554. Olson is the sole member of the Yellowjacket program to reach triple-digits in rebounds, finishing with 1,001 after last season’s NCAA tournament game at Azusa Pacific. “The Alumni Game is always a fun time as I really enjoy seeing our past players together again,” MSUB head coach Kevin Woodin said. “We all try to keep in touch throughout the year but with everyone’s busy lives it is very difficult to stay connected. This year’s Yellowjacket alumni team is definitely the best one I have ever seen put together since I have been here and it will be quite a challenge for our current team to stay with them. I am excited to watch both teams and know it will be a great event.” The current MSUB roster features two seniors, five juniors, two sophomores, and four freshmen. Senior Alisha Breen will lead the charge for the Yellowjackets this season. The native of Choteau, Mont., led the Great Northwest Athletic Conference last year in scoring with 17.4 points per game. She is joined by returning starters point guard Rylee Kane, forward Tiana Hanson, and guard Marissa Van Atta. Kane finished fourth last season in the GNAC in assists with 4.5 per game. Van Atta was second on the team in steals with 52 while Hanson was second in the GNAC from the free-throw line, shooting 71-for-82 for 86.6 percent. Completing the returners are juniors Vanessa Stavish and Lexi Prevost, and sophomores Taylor Edwards and Brina Hull. New to the team this season are junior transfer Grace Weeks and freshmen Jeanann Lemelin, Taylor Cunningham, Abbie Lohof, and Sophia Wass. At the helm of the program in his 13th season is Coach Woodin. Last season’s GNAC Coach of the Year, Woodin has earned a 210-136 overall record at MSUB, and has led the Yellowjackets to the NCAA Division II national tournament twice in the last three years.
