Mary Jane Seacole (1805 – 14 May 1881), née Grant, was a Jamaican-born woman of Scottish and Creole descent who set up a 'British Hotel' behind the lines during the Crimean War, which she described as "a mess-table and comfortable quarters for sick and convalescent officers," and provided succour for wounded servicemen on the battlefield. She was posthumously awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit in 1991. In 2004 she was voted the greatest black Briton. She became extremely popular among service personnel who raised money for her when she faced destitution after the war.

After her death, she was forgotten for almost a century, but today is celebrated as a woman who successfully combated racial prejudice. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, the daughter of a Scottish soldier in the British Army and a free Jamaican Creole woman. Seacole's mother was a "doctress", a healer who used traditional Caribbean and African herbal remedies. She ran Blundell Hall, a boarding house at 7 East Street, considered

one of the best hotels in all Kingston. Seacole called herself a Creole, a term that was commonly used in a racially neutral sense or to refer to the children of white settlers. She was proud of her black ancestry, writing, "I have a few shades of deeper brown upon my skin which shows me related— and I am proud of the relationship—to those poor mortals whom you once held enslaved, and whose bodies America still owns." She spent time with a woman she called her "kind patroness". She absorbed herself into work, declining many offers of marriage. Seacole died in 1881 at her home in Paddington, London, of apoplexy".

Groups / Public Service Get Active in Your Community Find out more about a local ACLU chapter in your community. Chapters across the state of Florida regularly meet to discuss and take action on pressing civil liberties issues. Find your local chapter to become a watchdog for freedom in your community! Support the ACLU of Florida You can support the work of the ACLU of Florida by becoming a member and/or making a financial contribution. Doing so helps support the litigation, legislative lobbying, public education and organizing work of the ACLU. Floridians with past felony convictions lose not only the right to vote, but also the right to serve on a jury and to hold public

of-

fice. Restoration of civil rights is also necessary to obtain certain occupational licenses. Close to one million Floridians are affected by this civil rights ban. In many instances those individuals that have lost their right to vote can have that right reinstated. Below is information from the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition & the Florida Parole Commission. More information on this topic may be found at www.restorerights.org and at https://fpc. state.fl.us/FAQClemency.htm.

If you are an individual that currently does not have your right to vote intact due to a past conviction, PLEASE review this information and take the necessary measures to have your civil rights restored. This is an American right which many of our military members have paid for with their lives.

Green Ginger Beer….Avoid large doses of ginger if you are pregnant or taking blood thinners. Consult your doctor before taking ginger or other herbal Ginger's root contains chemicals called gingerols and shogaols. When using ginger to treat upset stomach, these chemicals relax the intestinal tract, preventing motion sickness and relieving the nausea,

vomiting, colicky stomach cramps, and diarrhea. My fav... Ginger and Motion Sickness This herb has been studied as a remedy for motion sickness. The British medical journal Lancet, for example, reported in 1982 that ginger is a "very effective" motion sickness medicine. Several studies show that two or three ginger capsules taken one half hour before a trip and

two to three capsules taken at one to two hour intervals during a trip are effective in preventing motion sickness. This information is solely for informational purposes. IT IS NOT INTENDED TO PROVIDE MEDICAL ADVICE.

Now that JAMAICA has moved to decriminalize marijuana and passed that motion on Tuesday. (http:// mjnewsnetwork.com/). Furthermore, while it’s still far from legal, people who do get caught possessing marijuana, will no longer have it end up on their criminal record. It may be time to think about taking a trip down Jamaica’s way. As Chris Simunek, editor-in-chief of the magazine High Times, based in New York said, "There's already a high degree of marijuana tourism in Jamaica; they

just don't call it that." An online vacation guide called Jamaicamax promises to organize ganja tours in the Negril area. But there's a caveat: First you have to smoke a marijuana "spliff" with your guide, presumably to show you are not law enforcement. Henry Lowe, a prominent Jamaican scientist who helped develop a cannabis-derived medication to treat glaucoma in the 1980s, said the island could quickly become a hub of marijuana tourism and research." The government needs to free up marijuana soon, man, because it's a natural thing, a spiritual thing," Breezy said , "And the tourists love it." DAVID McFADDEN— Huffington Post.

I have tried Ginger Beer from the local Jamaican restaurant. It seemed to work for me.

Cannabis Corner Ganja Tours— DIANE ABBOTT THE classic attractions of a Jamaican vacation are sun, sea and sand. But, for the younger tourist, almost as attractive is an abundance of ganja. So it is not surprising that some enterprising tourism operators are offering specialist ganja tours of the island. Apparently visits to hidden cannabis plantations are combined with a little local history and plenty of free samples. Apparently amongst the highlights of the tour are a marijuana garden outside the Peter Tosh mausoleum in Belmont. The tour guide claims that the Tosh family keeps a small patch of marijuana there in his honour.”

Affirmations for the Moment Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding. -- Albert Einstein (1879-1955) It isn't enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn't enough to believe in it. One must work at it. -- Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) the task of women and men who do not bear arms. . .is to fight for peace. . .do your part, for God's sake. —Jeanne d'Albret (1528-1572)

It is within the families themselves where peace can begin. If families can learn to respect their members, and deal with conflict resolution, that would be the first step to keeping peace on a global level. - Susan Partnow (1947- ),

are an alcoholic? How bout if they only have sex when they have been drinking? How about if they miss work because they have a hangover sometimes? Home and Garden Got spiders? Try this: in a spray bottle, add half vinegar and half cocoa nut oil. Now you’ve got what I like to call Spider Sauce. Simple spray and watch the spiders go away! Getting that garden ready for winter? Here is a tip from a gardening friend for composting. Use a diaper pail for your composting bin. To help compost decompose rapidly, a balance of “two parts brown to one part green” is often preached as composting gospel, but in truth, keeping a balanced ratio is simply an option. (Dry materials, such as leaves, pine needles and

dead plants, are usually considered “browns,” whereas wetter materials, such as grass clippings and kitchen waste, are considered “greens.”) It’s not that balancing browns and greens is wrong; it simply makes home composting more complicated than it needs to be. You can pile up all your organic material without worrying at all about greens and browns, and it will still mature into compost. read more: http://www. motherearthnews.com/ How To Compost Composting is easy—it happens on it’s own.

The Haps

If you are lucky enough to get a hard copy of this month’s issue, hopefully you found the attached partial chapter of The Big Wave. This little gift to whet (pun intended) your curiosity about the upcoming ebook.

Can hardly wait for ice skating at UCF. It starts Nov. 15th & this year they promise snow nightly. Hours? 5pm 12am $12 - General Public $10 - UCF Students and only $8 for groups of 10 or more. See you there!

Just follow these 4 steps. CHOP-It helps to chop up larger items like watermelon rinds or corn cobs before putting them in your kitchen collector. EMPTY-Once your kitchen collector is full, take it to your composting area or bin and empty it out. STIR-Mix the new material into the existing pile using a pitchfork or other garden tool. This also adds oxygen, a key component to successful composting. COVER-Cover your food waste with a handful of old leaves, other dried yard waste or soil. This will add carbon and reduce the chance of odors and fruit flies. Then put the lid back on and let it “cook”. TIP: Keep the material in your compost bin about as moist as a wrung-out sponge.
