The art of breakdancing dates back to the late 1960's in the ghettos of the South Bronx in New York City, where the dance was used as a means of settling turf wars between rival gangs. Its popularity grew in the 1970's and the 1980's among the Latino American and Black youths of the inner city. Some people speculate that its origins go back to the "Charleston" and the "Lindy Hop". The break dance seems to have been influenced by other dances and also the martial arts. If you observe breakdances you will see similarities to the moves of Kung Fu in the routines performed by B-boy or a B-girl. Many have said that James Brown was the godfather of the breakdance. His song 'Get on the Good Foot' was hugely popular in 1969. The breakdance 'Good Foot' did originate from the James Brown song and it was later renamed as 'B-boy'. DJ Afrika Bambaataa soon after introduced some musical changes and was able to popularize the dance into the main stream of the community where it has had a major impact to this day. Certain 'crews' of breakdancing began to form in the late 1970s in New York City. Rocksteady Crew became very popular for their break dancing. The crew of Bambaataa also had major success with the dance form. Slowly breakdancing began to evolve into a dance that incorporated moves that include an assortment of, aerobic moves, hand spins, head spins, and flips. Break dancing is no longer a method used to settle gang turf wars as in the olden days. Nowadays, breakdancing has been fully introduced into mainstream America. Recording artists have utilized it in their pop videos, into hip hop, and even dance schools are offering classes so anyone can learn how to breakdance if the hip hop is also being taught at the school.
