Foreword MSFC is a blog by tweens for other tweens, and it reports every story from a tween perspective. For instance, when the President and First Lady visited Buckingham Palace, the headline read, "Malia and Sasha's mom and dad meet the Queen." Needless to say, Kailysia and Kaila have been all over the “Bo the Dog” story from its very beginning. Even before he was chosen, they were conducting an online poll on what he should be named. There's a dictionary icon you can click on to look up words you don't know. And if you're so young that you haven't learned to read yet, you can click on another icon to hear an audio version of the text. (That was Kailysia and Kaila‟s idea.) There are also lots of fun facts to learn and games to play, but when you click on the "Games" link you have to read a Bible verse first. (That was Grandma's idea.) And there's another link you can click on to donate to StandUp For Kids, Kailysia and Kaila‟s favorite charity that helps homeless children. Now, one of the nice things about being a newspaper columnist is that I have absolutely no hesitation about calling up perfect strangers. vi

So I called Kailysia and Kaila at their Grandma's house and they were a total delight - smart, sweet, enthusiastic, and extremely polite. "The only reason we started the fan club was because we couldn't find a kid-based website on the Obama girls," said their grandma. They were fascinated when I told them they could start their own fan club where other kids could read about America's First Daughters. The whole experience has been incredibly empowering. Their fondest hope, of course, is to meet the Obama girls in person. But what will they say to them if they do? "I'm just going to treat them like real people," said Kailysia. A lot of people say, “Oh gosh, you're the president's daughters! But I'm going to treat them like we've been friends forever. Martin Snapp, columnist for the Bay Area News Group

Preface The idea for a Malia and Sasha Fan Club began November 22, 2008, at grandma‟s house. In order to end our loud chatter circulating through the house, grandma gave us a project to complete. She asked us to write a letter to President Obama as many other children had done. We wanted to congratulate President Obama, but we really wanted to know more about Malia and Sasha, the president‟s daughters. Grandma encouraged us to do some research on the girls. After researching and finding only bits and pieces of information, we were happy to share with other children the information that we had found. Grandma suggested that we start our own fan club, and this is what we decided to do. We published our first post that same evening, and thus created the Malia and Sasha Fan Club weblog. The mission of the fan club is to Make good choices, Serve and learn, be Friendly and fair, and be Courteous and respectful. We‟re inspired by Malia and Sasha and our dreams are for everyone to know about the fan club, and maybe one day we might even get a chance to meet the President‟s daughters. Kailysia and Kaila (K&K)

Introduction Our Journey with Radiance and Rosebud is about two sisters taking a virtual journey with President Obama‟s daughters by following them via the news media. The book blossomed as a result of the Malia and Sasha Fan Club created for kids fascinated with America‟s First Tweens. Although this is a children‟s book targeted for the tween age group, Our Journey with Radiance and Rosebud involves three generations. There is a message for parents and also a reflection from grandma. You will find four poems and a prayer, and each journal entry is indented with clipart. All learning activities correlate with the MSFC weblog. The authors have included a clipart symbol explanation page related to math, vocabulary, videos, and questions for kids to answer. There are two Morse Code messages, and you will need Internet access in order to decipher the messages. We hope you enjoy your journey.

PRAYER

God of Heaven and Earth, we thank you for life and life more abundantly. We thank you for leadership in the greatest country on earth, the United States of America. We thank you Father for the gift of family that we see evident in the life of our President. Father God, we pray a covering not just for the leadership of America, or the White House, not only for President Obama and his wife Michelle, but particularly for their daughters Malia and Sasha. While being children of the President of the United States of America, and in the spotlight each and everyday, we cover them while in school, in the parks, when traveling, when shopping for fun and fashionable wardrobes and games, or maybe just being outdoors playing with their puppy BO, it is our prayer, God, that you will protect Malia and Sasha, as well as their parents and others who attend to them. x

It is also our prayer that they will be educationally, socially and spiritually developed, and even though their roles are very important, it is also our prayer that they will have a chance to enjoy a wholesome childhood. We also pray, Father God, that their parents will continue to cover them with prayer everyday, and Father God, while Malia and Sasha did not ask for this we are truly thankful for their position to influence so many others in a positive way. Now we pray that you will give them everything they need to deal with the pressures that come along with their newfound responsibilities. Lastly, but certainly not least, Father God, we thank you for the lives that will be changed all over the world for the better as a result of Malia and Sasha. prayer. Amen.

Acknowledgements I would like to thank Martin Snapp who is truly a columnist of the heart. He not only wrote the first article about the Malia and Sasha Fan Club, but also kept in touch on a regular basis to see how my granddaughters were doing and would send them articles he thought they would enjoy reading. Sincere thanks to my pastor Donald. L. Johnson who so eloquently wrote a special prayer for Malia and Sasha. Also, a great thank you for encouragement and support from the Historical Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church. The President’s Girls was written by Dominique Cash who is gifted in poetry and created this poem for my granddaughters to add to this book. Thank you, Dominique. I would also like to thank Dr. Betty J. Cooper for giving her time to edit Our Journey with Radiance and Rosebud and for other creative suggestions to help launch this book. I want to thank my husband Chuck Stewart for his patience and understanding and for always creating Malia and Sasha memorabilia to add to our granddaughtersâ€&#x; playroom. Thanks to my mother Armittie Heard and my sister Michelle who support me in all of my endeavors. I want to thank my son and daughter-in-law who gave me two beautiful granddaughters with dreams and aspirations to believe they can do anything they put their minds to. I also want to thank family, friends, and coworkers for encouragement. Above all, I give thanks to God for without him I could do nothing. Renee Stewart (grandma)

xii

A Note of Thanks Grandma always said, “If you can‟t find what you want, then go out and create it yourself.” That‟s exactly what we did! Our Journey with Radiance and Rosebud is for readers who want to take a fantasy trip with Malia and Sasha Obama during their first year as tweens in the White House. As we take our virtual journey with Malia and Sasha, we want to thank friends and family who made the journey possible. We especially want to give “shout outs” to the following family members and friends:

Mommy and Daddy Grandma Renee and Papa Grandma Ann Auntie Michelle Great Gran Granddaddy Gwen McNeary Beulah Luscombe (Courtney)

The President’s Girls

Did you giggle when you walked through the White House door? As you stepped on to those historical floors, Did you think of all the fun stuff too? Or did they give you a list of the can and can‟t do„s? Beautiful smiles And long brown curls. Sasha and Malia President Obama‟s Girls.

Can you run and play on the White House Lawn? Have friends over for pizza, watch movies all night long. I wonder do you like the same things I like, Acting silly with my sister and riding my bike. Beautiful smiles And long brown curls. Sasha and Malia President Obama‟s girls.

-1-

When everyone is fast asleep do you open your door And try to sneak, for a dash to the kitchen late at night For some milk and cookies and a good food fight. Like me, I know you‟ll take the dare although security‟s everywhere. Beautiful smiles And long brown curls Sasha and Malia President Obama‟s girls.

When you finally close your eyes to rest And all is calm and still. Do you thank the Lord for all he‟s done, Your father ran the race and won! Beautiful smiles And long brown curls. Sasha and Malia President Obama‟s girls.

Dad’s Letter to His Girls In a "Dear Malia and Sasha" letter, President-elect Barack Obama explains to his two young daughters why he ran for the highest office in the land.

Dear Malia and Sasha, I know that you've both had a lot of fun these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn't have let you have. But I also know that it hasn't always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy, it doesn't make up for all the time we've been apart. I know how much I've missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey. When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me -about how I'd make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn't seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn't count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for -3-

happiness and fulfillment in yours. In the end, girls, that's why I ran for president: because of what I want for you and for every child in this nation. I want all our children to go to schools worthy of their potential -- schools that challenge them, inspire them, and instill in them a sense of wonder about the world around them. I want them to have the chance to go to college – even if their parents aren't rich. And I want them to get good jobs: jobs that pay well and give them benefits like health care, jobs that let them spend time with their own kids and retire with dignity. I want us to push the boundaries of discovery so that you'll live to see new technologies and inventions that improve our lives and make our planet cleaner and safer. And I want us to push our own human boundaries to reach beyond the divides of race and region, gender and religion that keep us from seeing the best in each other. Sometimes we have to send our young men and women into war and other dangerous situations to protect our country - but when we do, I want to make sure that it is only for a very good reason, that we try our best to settle our differences with others peacefully, and that we do everything possible to keep our servicemen and women safe. And I want every child to understand that the blessings these brave Americans fight for are not free -that with the great privilege of being a citizen of this nation comes great responsibility. That was the lesson your grandmother tried to teach me when I was your age, reading me the opening lines of the Declaration of Independence and telling me about the men and women who marched for equality because they -4-

believed those words put to paper two centuries ago should mean something. She helped me understand that America is great not because it is perfect but because it can always be made better -- and that the unfinished work of perfecting our union falls to each of us. It's a charge we pass on to our children, coming closer with each new generation to what we know America should be. I hope both of you will take up that work, righting the wrongs that you see and working to give others the chances you've had. Not just because you have an obligation to give something back to this country that has given our family so much -- although you do have that obligation. But because you have an obligation to yourself. Because it is only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential. These are the things I want for you -- to grow up in a world with no limits on your dreams and no achievements beyond your reach, and to grow into compassionate, committed women who will help build that world. And I want every child to have the same chances to learn and dream and grow and thrive that you girls have. That's why I've taken our family on this great adventure. I am so proud of both of you. I love you more than you can ever know. And I am grateful every day for your patience, poise, grace and humor as we prepare to start our new life together in the White House. Love, Dad

Secret Code Names

If everybody knows Malia and Sasha's secret code name, why is it considered a secret service code name?

The United States Secret Service uses code names for U.S. presidents, first ladies, and other prominent persons and locations. The use of such names was originally for security purposes and dates to a time when sensitive electronic communications were not routinely encrypted; today, the names simply serve for purposes of brevity, clarity, and tradition. The Secret Service does not choose these names, however. The White House Communications Agency assigns these names. WHCA was originally created as the White House Signal Detachment under Franklin Roosevelt.

Malia and Sasha Will “Bear the Responsibility” We want a dog! We want a dog, dad! This is what we asked our dad several times before we received a ―No‖ answer! You see our dad is allergic to dogs just like Malia. However, unlike us, Malia and Sasha will receive a hypoallergenic dog. President-elect Barack Obama said the girls would bear the responsibility for looking after the new puppy that he promised them as a reward for their patience during his election campaign.

It

would be the girls’ duty to ―scoop the poop‖ left on the grounds. - 13 -

Malia and Sasha Sent Their Wish to Santa President-elect Barack Obama said he and his family would be spending some cash today. "We are going to do some Christmas shopping," he said on the U.S. News and World Report’s web site. Malia and Sasha sent their wish lists to Santa.

Chocolate Chunk Cookies for Malia and Sasha Sales of chocolate chunk cookies at a CafĂŠ in Des Moines, Iowa, jumped from 400 to more than 1,000 per week ever since the Obamas seemed to love their sweets. The family visited the place often during the summer of 2007, when the Illinois senator devoted much of his time in Iowa. Word got out about the Obamas' chocolate chunk love during a stop in Iowa last month when his staff ordered about a dozen cookies for the family. Soon sales jumped with requests coming from as far away as Mexico. - 15 -

Shenandoah Native Pens Obama Coloring Book Malia and Sasha Obama have already been given copies of Ms. Walsh’s coloring books. When Barack Obama won the presidential election in November, he incited a feeling in many Americans that anything was possible. Shenandoah native and children's author Chris (Offenburger) Walsh took that message even further with a motivational coloring book to commemorate

President. Walsh said she didn't want it to only be pictures to color. "The man is so inspirational. He can't say a sentence without inspiring me, so there's a story as well," she said. The coloring book, 11 pages long, tells the story of Malia and Sasha’s dad growing up with dreams and goals, as

throughout the book that all things are possible. The easiest way to obtain a copy of the book is to contact Walsh via her email at cita512@aol.com. You can buy Chris Walsh's other books online at Amazon or Target. Wow! Read Ms. Walsh's comments about our website! We're excited!

Kids Inaugural On Jan. 19, the night before President-elect Obama is sworn in, the Disney Channel will air "Kids Inaugural: We Are the Future," a concert in Washington honoring military families. Malia and Sasha are expected to attend. SUNDAY, JANUARY 11, 2009

Doggy Choice It’s finally down to two!

Will it be the

labradoodle or the Portuguese water hound? Malia and Sasha will decide soon. Malia has allergies and both of these choices would be great since they are hypoallergenic dogs and don’t shed much. The AKC has recommended one of these two breeds.

- 37 -

What does AKC stand for? If you have a dog, look it up on the AKC website to find out something about your dog. If you do not have a dog, find one you like on the AKC website and tell us why you want that dog as a pet.

Malia Plays Photographer on Mom's Birthday Like the hundreds of thousands flocking to Washington to witness history, Malia was already at work on her inauguration photo album. As President-elect Barack Obama launched his tour on a restored 1930s train car to Washington, D.C., on Saturday – which happened to be Malia and Sasha’s mom’s birthday – Malia snapped pictures of her father’s profile on a small digital camera. She also snapped pictures of little sister Sasha leaning against her mom on stage inside Philadelphia's 30th Street Station.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 2009 Need Some Advice Jenna and Barbara Bush gave Malia and Sasha advice. Our favorite thing that they said to Malia and Sasha is "Surround yourself with loyal friends

because they'll protect and calm you. Join in on some of the fun and appreciate the history."

- 46 -

The Bush twins go on to say:

"Slide down the banister of the solarium, go to T-ball games, have swimming parties, and play Sardines on the White House lawn. Have fun and enjoy your childhood in such a magical place to live and play. "When your dad throws out the first pitch for the Yankees, go to the game. "In fact, go to anything and everything you possibly can: the Kennedy Center for theater, State Dinners, Christmas parties (the White House staff party is our favorite!), museum openings, arrival ceremonies, and walks around the monuments. Just go. Four years go by so fast, so absorb it all, and enjoy it all!‖ Jenna and Barbara also told Malia and Sasha who to seek out in the White House for various circumstances, and recommended that Malia and Sasha "cherish" their pets in times when they need

"quiet comfort."

This is the school that then-candidate Obama promised not to forget during the primary. The young girl was prompted to write when she heard of the stimulus bill. She had to go to the library because her family did not have a computer at home, and the school’s computers, ―hand-medowns‖ once used by felons in the state prison system, weren’t available. She hoped those in Congress would help her school because it is unlikely that the leaky roof will be fixed otherwise. ―People are starting to see my school as a hopeless school with little education, but it is not,‖ she wrote. ―We finally want to prove to the world that we have a chance in life just as children at other schools. We feel good about what we are doing and our present conditions will not stop us from succeeding in anything.‖

Happy St. Patrick's Day About St. Patrick's Day . . .

Did you wear your green today?

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and the Irish. He was born about 389 A.D. in Northern Wales, which at that time may have been part of England or Scotland. Saint Patrick had an adventurous life. He was captured by pirates at the age of 16. The Irish pirates brought him to Ireland to tend the flocks of a chieftain in Ulster. Six years of slavery made him a devoted Christian. He escaped to France and became a monk. In 432, a vision led him to return to Ireland as a missionary bishop. He brought - 84 -

Christianity to Ireland and taught there for 29 years. He used the shamrock, a 3-leaf clover and Ireland's national flower to explain the Blessed Trinity. Sometimes the shamrock grows 4 leaves. St. Patrick founded 365 churches, baptized over 120,000 people and consecrated 450 bishops. What Do the Leaves Symbolize? One leaf is for FAITH... The second for HOPE... The third for LOVE... And the fourth for LUCK! In Irish tradition the Shamrock or three-leaf clover represents the Holy Trinity: one leaf for the Father, one for the Son and one for the Holy Spirit. When a Shamrock is found with the fourth leaf, it represents God's Grace. For your enjoyment, in the lucky clover game there are lots of three leaf clovers, but only 10 four-leaf clovers. It changes on a yearly basis because the first official day of spring is the (Spring) Vernal EQUINOX. This is when the sun is directly above the equator. It rises due East and sets due West but does not do so on the exact same day every year since the calendar is not - 88 -

exactly 365 precise days every single year. In 2009, spring will arrive on March 20th. The sun will be above the equator, crossing to the northern hemisphere around 11:47pm.

We would like to thank all our visitors for their encouraging comments and visiting our site. We're going to take a spring break from MSFC and will launch the next post on Monday, March 23, 2009. Have a Great Spring Break! sunday, MARCH 22, 2009 Michelle Obama Starts White House Organic Garden to Promote Healthy Eating

Malia and Sasha’s mom hopes that the garden can help people better understand where their food comes from and how to make healthier food choices to combat obesity in the United States. She also mentioned how getting her children involved in growing a vegetable garden makes them more curious about fresh fruits and vegetables and encourages them to try eating them. monday, MARCH 23, 2009 The Candy in the Little Canister: Starburst

Malia and Sasha (See MSFC Activities on our weblog) wednesday, april 01, 2009 Malia and Sasha's Dog Arrived Today - April Fools!

The history of April Fool's Day, sometimes called All Fool's Day, is not totally clear. There really wasn't a "first April Fool's Day" that can be pinpointed on the calendar. Some believe it sort of evolved simultaneously in several cultures at the same time, from celebrations involving the first day of spring. The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition was in 1582 in France. Prior to that year, the New Year was celebrated for eight days, beginning on March 25. The celebration culminated on April 1. With the - 94 -

reform of the calendar under Charles IX, the Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved to January 1.

Monroe in Sonny with a Chance. Also a stalwart on Disney radio, Lovato’s music career has crossed over to mainstream success with her hit This is Me – a duet with Joe Jonas. The song is from the Disney Channel original film Camp Rock that starred Lovato and The Jonas Brothers. After the huge success of that film, Lovato has not looked back. Lovato’s biggest honor, she says, is performing for the Kids Inauguration in front of Michelle, Malia and Sasha Obama. Hail to the New Chief: SheKnows:

What

was

it

like

to

be

in

Washington, D.C., during inauguration weekend? Demi Lovato: Wow, that was actually really crazy. There was a ton of energy. Everyone was so excited. The entire plane I was on going to Washington was filled with people going to the inauguration. Everyone was so excited. It was awesome. SheKnows: And for you to be asked to perform for

that

for

Inauguration, how honored were you? - 100 -

the

Kids

Demi Lovato: When I found out, I actually cried because I was going to be a part of history, and in a way, everyone who was there was a part of it. Just even being there and being in Washington at that time in our history was incredible. SheKnows: Did you get to meet Malia and Sasha Obama? Demi Lovato: I met Malia and Sasha and Michelle Obama. They were just so incredibly nice and down to earth. First musical memories: SheKnows: Speaking of being blessed, you are blessed with such an innate talent. When did you first remember exhibiting that talent? Demi Lovato: The first memory I have of wanting to

be

a singer or

actress was

in

kindergarten. We had a talent show at my elementary school and that’s when I decided to sing something. I messed up and I could have given up right then and there and said I’m never going to sing again. But it meant so much to me and I had so much fun out there that I thought, you know what, suck it up and sing for the rest of your life - 101 -

because it feels awesome. Whether I became famous from doing it wasn’t ever on my mind when I was a kid. I honestly just wanted to keep singing because that’s all I wanted to do every minute of the day basically. SheKnows: How has your family aided you in truly keeping your feet on the ground? You are remarkably so down to earth. Demi Lovato: I don’t think I ever got any advice. I think it’s a matter of support. No matter how much advice people give you, it sometimes can always be the same thing in a way. What really matters to me is when people are there for me, no matter what. When they give you support by lending a helping hand in whatever situation you’re in -- that’s the best thing my parents and my family could have given me. That’s what matters the most.

Obama Family to Welcome First Dog Tuesday

Malia

and

Sasha

are

finally

welcoming their new puppy to the White House this coming Tuesday! The black Portuguese water dog comes from a kennel in Texas. It was sold to a family who gave it back, and now will be "re-homed" to the first family. The six-month-old dog is named Charlie, though the

Obamas

will

rename

it.

A

website,

FirstDogCharlie.com, claims to have a photo of him! Charlie will be presented to the family by U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, whose own Portuguese water dogs, Splash and Sunny, are from the same kennel. Malia and Sasha's new pet is actually from the same lineage as the Kennedy dogs. The Portuguese water dog was a natural fit for the Obamas because of Malia's allergies - the breed is one of only a few that is completely hypoallergenic.

Easter Sunday is considered the most important Christian holiday. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his death. It is popularly celebrated with egg hunting and toy bunny rabbits. Easter Sunday is on April 12, 2009, this year. Easter Sunday is preceded by the season of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and repentance culminating in Holy Week and followed by a 50-day Easter Season that stretches from Easter to Pentecost.

- 105 -

Chocolate and candy eggs have become popular in this century, but exchanging of eggs in the springtime is an ancient custom. Egyptians buried eggs in their tombs. The Greeks placed eggs on their tombs. A Roman proverb states, "All life comes from an egg.‖ In most cultures, the egg signifies birth and resurrection. So when the church began to celebrate the Resurrection in the second century, the egg was a popular symbol. The Germans brought the symbol of the Easter

rabbit to America. The bunny as an Easter symbol seems to have it's origins in Germany, where it was first mentioned in German writings in the 1500s. The first edible Easter bunnies were made in Germany during the early 1800s. The first bunnies were not made of chocolate; they were made of pastry and sugar.

We believe that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was resurrected, and we will be with Him for eternity!

Malia

Sasha

Name

their New Puppy 'Bo' The first family has settled on a first pet — a 6-month-old Portuguese water dog that the Obama girls are naming Bo. The dog is a gift from Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., who owns several Portuguese water dogs himself. "We couldn’t be happier to see the joy that Bo is bringing to Malia and Sasha," Kennedy said in a statement. "We love our Portuguese water dogs and know that the girls — and their parents — will love theirs too." We read that Malia and Sasha chose the name Bo for the pup because first lady Michelle Obama's father was nicknamed Diddley. The name for the dog was an apparent reference to the singer "Bo" Diddley.

thursday, april 23, 2009 The First Lady on Sleepovers, Gardens and That Crazy Dog Bo By Rachel L. Swarns

Today First Lady Michelle Obama held a ―Take Your Child to Work Day‖ at the White House. She answered questions from children eager to hear about sleepovers in the Executive Mansion. The First Lady also answered questions - 114 -

about the Obamas’ new dog and what she liked least about her new life. The young people — sons and daughters of White House employees and local journalists — gathered in the East Room. Before she took their questions, Mrs. Obama urged young people to work hard, respect their parents and help those in need. ―We want you to think about serving your communities because you don’t have to be a White House employee to do it,’’ Mrs. Obama said. ―You can do it now. You can do it first of all by listening to your parents. That’s a service in and of itself, just being a good kid.‖ ―You could volunteer at a homeless shelter, right? You could work for a soup kitchen. You could volunteer in a garden. You could help tutor another kid in your class who’s having trouble. You could walk your neighbor’s dog, mow the lawn.‖ ―There’s so much that you can do right now,’’ she said. ―And we want you all to start thinking now about what you can do to be good public servants, not when you grow up but right now.’’ Then came the questions. - 115 -

―Well, what does your dog like to do?‖ one young man asked. Mrs. Obama laughed. ―Oh, he is a crazy dog,’’ she said. ―He — you know, he loves to chew on people’s feet.’’ A girl piped up: ―What’s your least favorite thing to do in the White House?‖ Mrs. Obama pondered. ―I don’t think I can list one thing that I just don’t like to do,’’ she said. ―Everything that I do here is really pretty worthwhile, even if it’s hard. Maybe it’s running on the treadmill. Why don’t you put that down — when I have to run. Sometimes I don’t like to do that.’’ And on to the sleepovers. ―When your kids have friends over, and they stay a night, where do they stay?’’ ―Sometimes they sleep in the girls’ rooms, or sometimes they sleep upstairs where there’s a TV,’’ Mrs. Obama said. ―They like sleeping in front of the TV, probably like you all do when you have a sleepover.’’

96 Year-Old Missoula Woman Makes Quilt for First Dog Bo Yes she can! A 96 year-old woman made a quilt for Bo.

The memory quilt, more than four feet

long and just as wide, depicts the Obama family and Bo, the Portuguese water dog that arrived at the White House last month ago. This

96

year

old

woman

registered

last

November for the first time in 14 years so she could vote for President Obama. The quilt itself is one of hundreds, or maybe thousands, that this Missoula woman has produced. She found time to sew way back when, on the 2,000-acre farm in North Dakota where she grew up. She and her late husband later ran the farm. ―I drove lots of horses, lots of tractors, lots of trucks, and lots of self-propelled combines,‖ she said. ―If I could have a piece of land right now I'd - 123 -

still have my cows and pigs and chickens. I love the farm.‖ For nearly four decades this family farmed the land before they retired and moved to Missoula in 1966.

The

96

year

old

woman

has

nine

grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

She keeps in touch

with all of them on her own computer. ―I keep working, thinking of something to do all the time, but I do keep myself busy,‖ she said. ―It seems like I no more than get up and it's time to go to bed again.‖ She has made quilts for all her progeny, a legacy they will all soon share with the Obamas. The presidential quilt isn't necessarily for a bed. ―It's more like a wall hanger,‖ she said. ―It's especially for the dog and for the girls.‖ On one side of the quilt, she embroidered Obama's campaign slogan: ―Yes We Can.‖ On the other side in matching green stitches: ―Yes We Did.‖ To see this beautiful 96 year old woman and the quilt, you will have to go to our weblog! - 124 -

Valley Girls Thrilled by Reply to Their Invitation to Malia and Sasha Two Cave Junction friends were watching presidential inaugural

In February, they hand-wrote a letter to Malia and Sasha saying that they saw their dad get to be president on TV and thought it was cool. They asked if the Secret Service could get the Obama girls out of school and let them fly on Air Force One to Oregon for a sleepover with them. In their letter, they asked if Malia and Sasha liked ―American Girl,‖ the board game, and ―Sorry,‖ and if they really had a bowling alley in the White House. The tree house is no ordinary one. It features a stairway instead of a rope ladder, a spacious balcony and bay window. It has a pretty door and a tinted roof to let in light. The girls opened the envelope and pulled out a sheet of white paper, dated March 16 that bore the watermark and letterhead of the White House. It was signed by Michelle Obama who thanked the girls for writing. She wrote, ―Our daughters are happily settling into their new surroundings and routines. They’re having fun making new friends and working hard on their homework.‖ - 131 -

She also urged them to do volunteer work and be involved in America’s future. Mrs. Obama closed by writing, ―I appreciate how hard you worked on your letter. Keep up the good work.‖ The families of both girls realize that the Obamas must receive thousands of letters asking to visit the children at the White House or inviting them to visit their hometown. So far, no invitation to visit Malia and Sasha at the White House has arrived. These two girls are still hoping to be invited there one of these days if Malia and Sasha are unable to visit them in Oregon.

thursday, may 21, 2009 Young Girl Sends Letter to Malia and Sasha An

11-year-old

fifth

grader

at

Crossville

Attendance Center sent a letter earlier this year to the daughters of President Barack Obama, and much to her surprise, got a letter back from First Lady Michelle Obama. This tween girl lives in Carmi with her parents and brother. During an interview with their local newspaper this week, the tween said she watched the inauguration of the president with a great deal of interest and particularly liked watching the parade that followed. What made her decide to write the president's daughters Malia and Sasha was that she realized the girls would have to move into a new house because of their dad's job. She knew exactly what that felt like. "I wanted to welcome them to their new home," she said. "I was hoping they would settle in OK." Even though Malia and Sasha were moving into the White House, this 11 - 133 -

year old girl still thought it was hard on kids to have to move and thought she could be a comfort to the young girls. When asked how she reacted to receiving a letter from the first lady, she said, "I thought it was pretty cool!" Her mom agreed and said "She was jumping up and down and screaming. She was pretty excited." saturday, may 23, 2009

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a holiday in the United States observed in late May. Previously designated Decoration Day, it was initiated in 1868 by Gen. John A. Logan for the purpose of decorating the graves of Civil War veterans and has since become a day on which all war dead are commemorated. The three-day weekend is about more than barbecues, blockbusters, and the beach!

Most report reading around 1 to 5 books per month for fun, but an ambitious 27% report they read 6 or more. Also in comments, tweens were more than happy to identify themselves as "bookworms" and shout out the running total of books they've read so far this year.

Perseid Meteor Shower On or about August 12th every year, the earth passes through a portion of the solar system that has a lot of debris from comet Swift-Tuttle. This area appears to be in the constellation Perseus. The meteor shower is therefore called the Perseid meteor shower. This shower displays more "falling stars" than any other during the year. Falling stars are really small particles (usually smaller than a pea) burning up as they hit the earth's atmosphere. You can usually see at least one falling star per minute, or around 50 to 80 per hour.

Gelato or Ice Cream Malia and Sasha had gelato at Capogiro in Philadelphia on the weekend when they visited the Betsy Ross House. Remember, they made gelato in Italy. We think Malia and Sasha prefer gelato over ice cream. From the menu, Malia had dulce de leche and fior di latte; and Sasha kept it simple with dulce de leche. Wow! Gelato originated in northern Italy in the 1500s and the sale of gelato was one of the major sources of income for the area; so at one point in history, only royalty could afford gelato. Gelato is served cold, but not frozen, so the appearance is more like frozen yogurt than solid ice cream. Gelato cannot be frozen as properly as ice cream, so for that reason it is made daily and best served fresh.

However, she got a response from First Lady Michelle Obama. Mrs. Obama gave the girl inside information on what it's like for Malia and Sasha in the White House. Also the First Lady gave to the girl a personally signed picture of herself in the White House. friday, august 28, 2009 Obama Responds to Local Girl’s Letter A big Obama fan penned a letter to the President

Fantastic Summer Vacation Stops Malia and Sasha went on a fantastic vacation when school closed for the summer, and we've been very busy trying to keep up with Malia and Sasha's summer vacation. Although we may never ever get a chance to visit these countries, we learned a lot about the kids who live in these countries, the culture, and the famous monuments. - 184 -

The virtual tours on the Internet are cool. Our grandma also included some Discovery Education videos of the kids who live in these countries. Here is a list of the places Malia and Sasha visited. What K&K Thought About President Obama's Speech Kaila - I thought President Obama's speech was inspiring and I also thought that we should make an effort and take responsibility for getting a good education so we can get a successful job. Kailysia - I think that President Obama helped a lot of kids recognize the importance of going to school and getting an education. He really made me think that it is really cool to go to school, even though other kids might think school is boring and not cool. Getting good grades is a good thing!

tuesday, October 13, 2009 Excerpt from Ms. Twixt: The Tween Summit took place this past Saturday at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington. The day was all about tween girls - what tweens want, their dreams, and what they want to see from the government, parents, schools, and society. While a majority of the girls in attendance were from the Washington area, I met families who had travelled from Florida, Washington state, and California. Jess Weiner moderated the day's sessions. On the topic of the First Tweens, she said that girls are ―so excited to have tweens as role models in the White House‖ not just because their father is the President, but because they are so relatable. Malia and Sasha Obama live lives so much like other tweens - they attend school, play soccer, care for their pets, take vacations with their parents, cheer for the Jonas Brothers - just like other tweens. Jess also heard from girls at the Summit who said they wanted tween girls to see "more real - 197 -

girls" in the media, and that they wanted to be featured and acknowledged for their own efforts. Many of the girls attending the Summit were active in their communities and emerging leaders. AllyKatzz.com organized the Summit, and they will be publishing the input from the girls' sessions shortly. Girls spent the morning and afternoon sharing their insights on all kinds of issues and contributed their comments on "the White House Wall".

We Finally Tasted One of Malia and Sasha's Favorite Desserts Gelato seems to be a favorite dessert for Malia and Sasha. After calling Ben and Jerry’s, Baskin and Robbins, TCBY, and Bruster's, we could only find one restaurant that served gelato in Memphis. Grandma took us to CafÊ Eclectic and we tasted gelato for the first time. I ordered the blood orange gelato and my sister Kaila selected the passion fruit gelato. We liked the passion fruit more than the blood orange. Grandma thought about getting the cinnamon gelato but changed her mind and decided to taste ours. So if Malia and Sasha visit Memphis and would like to have gelato, they will have to get it at CafÊ Eclectic. If there is another restaurant in Memphis selling gelato, let us know.

Just Like Me To see someone who looks like me My mind is puzzled Exactly how could this be? The media shows girls all of the time None quite like me None just unique, rare, a distinct kind I see your hair and itâ€&#x;s just like mine In ponytails, braids, platted or even straighten for those special times You play the same games that I play each day You even carry yourself in a different way Someone whose skin is identical to mine Brown, Bronze That color that only God could design Lord, I wonder how could it be Did you make more than one of me? Or did you just let the world see How talented, smart, and beautiful Your little brown girls could be.

Tweenia Kaila and I are sisters, and Malia and Sasha are sisters. This section is about two old sisters who are in their mid and late 50’s. Grandma has one sister who is our great-aunt, but we call her Auntie. They are alike in many ways, but they are complete opposites when it comes to computers and decorating.

Auntie loves to

create things with scissors, glue, fabric, cardboard, etc.

She can just take simple things and make

something pretty. Grandma cannot make anything too good unless it involves the computer.

If you have a sister(s), what ways are you alike and what ways are you different? A few years ago, Auntie came up with an idea of creating a personalized doll. She felt the prettiest doll you could have was a doll that looked like yourself. She said that every child should have her own personalized doll. She made her first two dolls for her daughters (Chanelle and Tasha) and just took their photos and - 235 -

glued their faces on the cloth doll and dressed them up with pretty clothes and a wig. All of our family wanted dolls made, but the summer was over and Auntie had to go back to work teaching class. I was a baby and Kaila was not born when Auntie thought about creating dolls.

When we started the

MSFC weblog, we asked Auntie if she would make dolls for us to sell so we could donate some money to StandUp For Kids. She worked with a graphic artist and created a face to be airbrushed on. Since we’re tweens, she decided to name the doll Tweenia and this is why Tweenia was made.

I liked Tweenia, but I

wanted my face on the doll. Auntie just could not get the face glued on right. This is where grandma came in with her computer skills. Grandma and Auntie got together and TweeniaMe was created.

THE STORY OF TWEENIA One night while I lay in my bed, Another dream swirled through my head. I wish the world would truly see, A special dream God gave to me. And not just me, but you and YOU! We all have dreams that can come true. And so this doll was created to mean, Never give up, just follow your dream. She's soft and cuddly and oh so sweet, Her fragrance is my added treat! This time the dream was different you see, Because I had the dream and the dream came to be!

Tweenia is a beautiful realistic looking 18" cloth doll designed exclusively for MSFC StandUp For Kids charity. What Makes Tweenia different from Bratz, Barbie, Dora, and American Doll? Tweenia is soft and cuddley! She is filled with a sweet aroma. Tweenia wears a Kara-Lynn hair style by Monique that's very popular with tweens. Her dress is silver velvet with a ruffled skirt and shoes to match. But most of all Tweenia was created to represent YOU! TweeniaMe is made with your photograph. All TweeniaMeâ€&#x;s come with a hat that is attached to the dollâ€&#x;s head. TweeniaMe is more for show, not to be played with.

A Message to Parents Predicting a man‟s future may not always be the results of appraising his educational background, understanding his upbringing, or examining his circumstances. Often the most important aspect of a man‟s future is determined by his

Our Creator was impartial and gave us all an imagination and a will, and the ability to dream. As parents, we should provide our children every opportunity to fulfill their dreams and aspirations. This is to say that as children grow up, we should cultivate and harvest their interests as venues for fulfilling their dreams. Basically, we‟re saying that if you can disrupt man‟s ability to dream, then you hinder his will to believe in his dreams. If this continues, ultimately man‟s future might be derailed or destroyed. It is our job as parents to provide environments that are conducive for dreaming. We are to protect the areas of our children‟s lives that dreams are initiated and cultivated, especially the heart and the mind. Therefore, we must be cognizant of what they are watching and who they are talking to. Good communication is always important in motivating positive relationships. If someone told you today that they would pay you a million dollars if you took a freshly sprouted flower and guaranteed its growth beyond 6ft, how much attention would you give that flower? You would more than likely spend time with it everyday. You would sacrifice time, own imagination, or should we say, his dreams.

- 255 -

money, and effort to ensure that the flower received the essential amount of attention necessary for it to be healthy and to grow. You might even invest in some classes that would help you become more technologically advanced in cultivating that flower. You might possibly create a unique space for the flower to make sure that it is living in the best possible conditions. Perhaps we could go on and on regarding the infinite wisdom of horticulture. The point is that we see the value in the cultivation of a flower. The cultivating season is not fun sometimes and requires discipline when we would rather be selfish; however, it is the reward of a fully healthy cultivated flower that motivates us. Ok! No one has offered to give you a million bucks for a fully healthy cultivated child. Maybe not, but the reward of tranquility and blessings from the result of it is PRICELESS!!! As the parents of Kailysia and Kaila, our parenting skills have not always been perfect. We have made mistakes along the way and are still learning how to be the best parents. However, we have decided to dedicate our lives to making sure that the dreams that God has placed in their hearts are free to be expressed, communicated and cultivated. Just as many other tweens, our daughters enjoy watching television, surfing the Internet, and playing video games. Although we know they cannot be protected from everything in life, our goal is to limit television and other influences that might sway them from achieving their - 256 -

dreams. We desire our daughters to become their own trend setters by making wise choices and serving as good role models for others. Our goal is not to let MTV, BET, Disney, Nickelodeon, the Internet, or their friends set their trends for life, but that they become their own trend setters in the world. We are careful to judge what they are exposed to ALL THE TIME! There is never a day off, even though we know they can‟t be protected from everything. However, as their covering in the world, we should be the first to talk about the important things of life. We can share the truth! We can tell them that we love them and are proud of them in whatever they choose to do. We can be their biggest fans, if no one else is. Why? Because we know that a nurturing environment creates courage, sharpens the mind, develops focus, and grows faith. Thus the equation: DREAMS + FAITH + WORK = AN AWESOME FUTURE

As parents, our job involves protecting the atmosphere that dreams are born in, help develop our children‟s faith and becoming role models of good character and work ethics. It is our extreme pleasure to have shared with you a glimpse of our daughters‟ dreams, faith, and work. We hope you have found their book entertaining and inspiring, not only for your children but for many others across the globe. Kyle & Lisa Beckwith Kailysia & Kaila’s Parents - 257 -

Grandma’s Reflection:

The days go by~~the months fly~~ many years have passed away The next generation of children are here and they ponder . . . what was it like to be the first African-American girls to live in the White House?

- 258 -

On March 21, 2009, President Obama was interviewed on CBS‟s “60 Minutes” and was asked how his girls were faring in the White House. He said they were adapting remarkably well, in ways that he just would not have expected. He added, “What‟s interesting is actually how unimpressed they are with it. I mean they – they‟re going to school. They are unchanged. They‟re the same sweet, engaging, happy, unpretentious kids that they were. They do seem to be having fun.” It hadn‟t been so long ago when my oldest granddaughter Kailysia, age 7 at the time, asked me, “Grandma, do you think we will ever have an AfricanAmerican president?” I didn‟t have to think long. I said, “No, not in my lifetime, but I‟m sure before your ripe old age, you‟ll get to see this historic event.” Less than two years later, I saw on television that Barack Obama was going to run for President of the United States. The first time I ever heard his name was from my girlfriend Gwen who said she believed he would make a great president. I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. I really had no idea who Barack Obama was until I listened to his heartfelt speech delivered at the 2004 Democratic Convention. I saw him again on the Oprah Winfrey Show. After seeing and hearing Mr. Obama, it brought back a thrill that I hadn‟t felt since Harold Washington became Chicago‟s first black mayor.

- 259 -

A few months later my granddaughters asked me with anticipation and excitement, “Grandma, who are you going to vote for? I‟m voting for Barack Obama!” I said enthusiastically. They looked puzzled and said, “But Hillary is a girl!” I replied, “But Barack is an AfricanAmerican.” Then I asked them who they would vote for. They replied, “Well, we‟re girls, and we think women can do as well as men.” Yes, my granddaughters chose gender in the beginning, but they realized that if either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama became president, history would be made. My granddaughters soon changed their minds and climbed aboard the Obama bandwagon. I‟m not sure what won my granddaughters over to Mr. Obama‟s side, but I have no doubt that presidential daughters Malia and Sasha Obama played an important role. You would think it‟s enough that Barack Obama might become the first AfricanAmerican president. But what was even more exciting for Kailysia and Kaila was the idea of two African-American girls, almost their same age (tweens), living in the White House. January 20, 2009 On inaugural day, I watched television with teary eyes as Barack Obama proudly stood and took his oath of office as America‟s 44th president. Although my father was in the hospital on January 20th and I was very sad, my sadness - 260 -

turned to joy as I witnessed history being made. Immediately what came to mind was: “He‟s ready.” My dad lived only three months after the inauguration, and may not have realized that America had its first African-American president. I am grateful and blessed, however, that my mother is still living and witnessed this event. Since climbing aboard the Obama bandwagon, my granddaughters wanted to know more about presidential tweens Malia and Sasha Obama. Three days after the inauguration they were astonished by an invitation to appear on ABC‟s “Nightline” to talk about their Malia and Sasha Fan Club. Learning is a journey that never ends. My granddaughters Kailysia and Kaila took a virtual journey by following Malia and Sasha Obama via the news media. After such a fantastic trip, they asked me to help them publish a book using information from their weblog. We hope you have thoroughly enjoyed your Journey with Radiance and Rosebud.

A grandmother's love becomes her permanent legacy and her timeless gift to the family. It is a gift to her children, to her grandchildren, and to subsequent generations. Grandchildren They lighten the darkest room; So mischievous, yet so innocent Lavishing love on you Wrapping you around their finger With their hugs and smiles, Bypassing mommy and daddy To ask Grandma or Grandpa For favors or treats; Knowing you will give in (At least sometimes!). Oh the thrill of a grandparent To hear "I love you, Grandma" Or, "I love you, Grandpa" It would melt even the coldest heart. What a joy they bring to our lives Filling any void that might exist, Giving opportunity and excuse To shop when otherwise not necessary; Playing their favorite games When baby-sitting How they tire you out! One would not exchange the value A grandchild brings Or the happiness and fulfillment That comes from having them tag along Or even cry for you when you leave; And you try to contain how you feel, Secretly. Never take them for granted, but always Thank God for his wonderful blessing of grandchildren! Poem by Beulah Luscombe (Courtney)

Our Journey with Radiance and Rosebud is about two sisters taking a virtual journey with President Obama’s daughters by following them via the news media. The book blossomed from creating the Malia and Sasha Fan Club for kids who are fascinated with America’s First Tweens. Although this is a children’s book targeted for this age group, Our Journey with Radiance and Rosebud involves three generations. There is a message for parents and also a reflection from grandma. Hi there. My name is Ellen McCarthy and I'm a reporter at The Washington Post. I'm working on a story about kids who are fans of Malia and Sasha. It seems like I've come to the right place. Washington Post Recipient of headband giveaway from Andrea’s Beau: Thank you so much! My daughter Mary is so excited! She is 8 years old and in the 2nd grade here in Maryland. We are big fans of Sasha, Malia, the First Lady and the President! Mary wants me to be sure to tell you that she enjoys reading the blog, and to please say hello to Kailysia and Kaila for her. She sends her thanks to you for your kindness and generosity. Peace and Blessings, Ann G. (Parent) I wanted to let you know that I was interviewed by my local newspaper yesterday for an article to be run on Inauguration Day. The writer asked me if there was anything special that sticks in my mind throughout the whole taking orders time. I told him that one of my proudest moments was to be featured on your granddaughters' website. Chris Offenburger Walsh Childrens’ Author If you're as sick as I am of all the anger, hatred and negative energy that has been afflicting our country lately, this book is the perfect pick-me-up. By looking at recent events from a tween's point of view, these two girls remind us what America's real values are and why, despite everything, it's still the greatest country in the world. Martin Snapp, columnist for the Bay Area News Group
