SCREWS BETTER THAN GLUES Summarizing my thesis

My thesis will reduce electronic waste by connecting consumers with people who can fix their broken electronics. Every day, more people feel helpless with their broken electronics because it’s costly and inconvenient to get them repaired. As a result, they either throw them out or keep their electronics in storage. Our current system is broken. Manufacturers pressure consumers to buy new devices rather then seeking to fix them. Finding the right repairman is inconvenient and costly. 80% of recycled or trashed devices end up in third world countries and devastate local health and the environment. My thesis connects consumers and repairmen together in order to create an ecosystem that supports reusing rather than wasting. I want to empower consumers to set a fair price on the cost of the repairs while increasing job opportunities for repairmen.

SUMMER

FALL

This summer my goal is to develop a solid objective that will direct me toward a strategy for my thesis. I will also begin interviewing people who are apart of my subject and collecting data. Lastly, I plan to find an advisor to mentor me through the development process.

My goal for the fall is to begin the branding and social media component of my thesis. I will also build a website that will follow my process as well as plan out how to build a more interactive platform for users to understand my topic.

2013 SPRING

SUMMER

FALL

In spring, I will be approaching partnering organizations in hope of getting funding and resources for my thesis. I will begin organizing and designing a mobile repair pop-up and developing advertising materials for it. I will also apply for grants.

In early summer, my goal is to find people in the repair community to participate in the mobile repair pop-up. I will be designing event materials and I plan to host the event in late summer of early fall.

In fall my goal is to collect and design a final thesis book. I will also present the entire thesis and process to a committee and graduate from the Academy of Art.

REPAIRING IS A CREATIVE CHALLENGE The designer behind the thesis

I want to use my thesis to spread knowledge, make connections and encourage smarter behavior

My father repaired computers and TVs when I was young. He had the knowledge and skill to fix just about any device and we lived off of the income of his trade. Today, instead of fixing minor problems in my electronics, I am like everyone else. I just buy the next model and store my older computer in the closet. One broken computer soon turned to many and now my house is filled with old or unused electronics. I took on the topic e-waste because I tired of keeping up this bad habit and I don’t want to be responsible for the havoc it causes in other countries. My father’s generation was resourceful and salvaged what they can. I believe it’s time for me and my generation to start doing adapting the same habits.

LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE

SCENARIO

What can I possibly do after graduation

01

DESIGN THINKING I can imagine a future where my thesis lands me employment in an industrial design firm or design firm that focuses on design thinking. I want to work in firms similar to IDEO, Frog or Elemental 8. Firms that are multidisciplinary and uses graphic design to communicate larger ideas.

SCENARIO

THE SKILLS I WILL DEVELOP FROM MY THESIS WILL HELP ME FIND JOBS IN BOTH DESIGN FIRMS AND TECH COMPANIES

03

SPREADING THE WORD

INHOUSE DESIGN

Another possible future I can imagine for myself is working in design firms that focus on user experiences and storytelling. Both are important skills to learn and I want to work for firms such as Adaptive

Lastly, I can work inhouse for companies like Apple, HP or Autodesk. My goal is to become a creative director so that I can work alongside with these companies to find better solutions for e-waste and create changes

for standard practices within the industry.
