Building design flair comes ‘naturally’ Building designers eclipse architects when it comes to residential design work in WA, reports JANE EVANS A GREAT design is not always the work of an architect. In fact, more then 85 per cent of residential homes in WA are the work of building designers, according to the Building Designers Association of Western Australia (BDAWA). While the difference between the two is minimal, building designers seem to attract less public recognition than their fellow architects. Academically, the difference is between a university degree and, in most cases, a combination of diploma studies and/or practical experience in the building industry. In practice, it is simply a question of interpretation and application. According to BDAWA, in Western Australia there is no difference in the work that can be done by a building designer to an

architect. Building designer Douglas Paton operates multi-award winning Subiaco practice D4 Designs. He said building designers often faced the challenge of the public perceiving architects to be the only people who can design their home, which is not the case. “Design flair cannot be taught, you either have it or you don’t, regardless of how or where you studied,” he said. “Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most popular ‘architects’ in history, was actually only a draftsman who was just born with a talent for design – the talent was nurtured, encouraged and the rest is history.” Paton started his practice about 10 years ago after working for other designers and architects. “I design because I am passionate about it, it’s not about making statements, it’s simply

about designing for the people who live in the house,” he said. “I don’t want my clients to change their lifestyle to suit the design; I want to change the design to suit their lifestyle. “For them this building is the most important building in the world.” At 34, the BDAWA member is also passionate about heading up a new group within the association for young designers, like himself.

“I want young designers to keep their youth and enthusiasm, but benefit from the knowledge and experience of some of our respected veterans in the industry,” he said. “BDAWA has been invaluable in promoting and supporting building designers with professional knowledge in seminars and courses, and ensures that all designers have access to the latest suppliers, products, regulations and industry developments.” ■
