Peta’s goals reignited with comeback Wife of former West Coast Eagle Chris Waterman is looking forward to the challenge. AFTER a short break, Peta Waterman, wife of former West Coast Eagle Chris Waterman, is returning to real estate. Now based at Acton North in City Beach, Peta joined Acton Mandurah in a business development role last year when Chris took on

the role of coach of Peel Thunder. She stepped back from real estate briefly when the family moved back to Perth and Chris became coach of Subiaco. “I love selling and have missed it over the last year,” she said. “Now that the kids are older and Chris is coaching locally I can focus on my career. I'm really looking forward to working with the Acton group, they have a fantastic name and are very well-respected.” Acton North director Scott Stanley said Peta’s

Skills shortage has industry worried

Landlords need to be hard-wired

Anticipated demand for labour in late 2010 from competing sources highlights the risk of the residential sector facing acute problems, STEPHEN MILES was told.

Every home or apartment, sold or leased, now needs to be fitted with a minimum of two RCDs, reports CARMELLE WILKINSON.

A SHORTAGE of skilled labour in the housing sector is getting worse, the Housing Industry Association says. The HIA said a recovery in private demand for new homes and renovation work, coupled with the recovering resources sector, were driving demand for the skilled residential labour force. “The simultaneity of the demand for this labour in 2010 from competing sources highlights the risk of the residential sector facing an acute shortage of skilled labour from late in 2010,” HIA chief economist Harley Dale said. He said the shortage of skilled labour could significantly constrain new-home construction. The HIA’s trade availability index in the March 2010 quarter fell to its lowest level since September 2008. The index dropped to -0.11 from -0.08 in the December quarter in 2009, meaning there was a moderate undersupply of tradespeople. “There were shortages in 10 out of 13 skilled trades in the March 2010 quarter,” Dr Dale said. Shortages were in bricklaying, carpentry, ceramic tiling, electrical, general building, landscaping, other trades, plumbing, roofing and site preparation. ■

sporting background gave her an excellent grounding for sales. “She is a people person and a team player, yet very competitive. Her drive and energy guarantee she will be successful,” he said. A talented sportswoman, Peta played netball for the Orioles in 1999 and 2000, before retiring to focus on motherhood. She continued to play at State league level with the Coastal Sharks, stopping in 2007 after an injury. ■

MANY owners of higher density properties such as town houses and apartments in Perth do not realise that new government rules relating to Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and smoke alarms apply to them as well as owners of stand-alone properties. According to Home Owners Utility Services (HOUS) managing director Todd Allender, a large number of emergency callouts conducted by his company found a large number of rental properties, in particular, still did not have RCD devices. “The Western Australian Government implemented new RCD regulations in August 2009,’’ he said. “This new legislation applies to people selling their homes, and landlords. “Every home sold or leased now needs to be fitted with a minimum of two RCDs, which should protect all power point and lighting circuits. “HOUS is finding that many owners of high density rental properties do not realise that when a new tenant takes up residency, landlords need to install the devices before the lease agreement is signed, and for homes with a continuing tenancy, landlords have until August 8, 2011, to fit the RCDs.” Mr Allender said the latest Census revealed that 24.7 per cent, or around one in four properties in Perth, are rental properties and many of these rental homes are higher

density properties such as apartments. “The landlords of these properties either assume that the legislation does not apply to them or that it is a matter to be dealt with the strata company managing the complex,’’ he said. “From October 1, 2009, mains powered smoke alarms must be fitted in all existing residential buildings prior to sale and when a new tenancy agreement is signed for rental properties. “If there are no tenancy changes in rental properties, then mains powered smoke alarms must be fitted by October 1, 2011. “Further to this, HOUS recommends that only photoelectric smoke alarms are used and not the cheaper ionisation type.” Failure to comply with this legislation can result in significant financial penalties for landlords. Owner’s vision has turned this 1960s home into one of the most magnificent in the suburb, writes JANE EVANS THESE days, indoor-outdoor entertaining areas are common in houses in Perth, but the owner of this West Leederville home goes above and beyond with his. The rear alfresco area to the Gregory Street property would have to be one of the most impressive I have seen. It has even played host to a couple of weddings.

There is a resort-like ambience evident as soon as you step outside. Shea Timber flooring flows right up to the glass-framed, solar-heated pool. Stone-cladded panels adorn one wall of the area while a fully-integrated stainless steel outdoor kitchen and a cosy gas log fire adorn the other. An elevated spa bath with a flat screen

television completes the setting. Surrounded by lush, tropical foliage and Balinese garden ornaments, it really does feel like paradise. However, the magnificence of this home is not just limited to its alfresco area. The front of the property is grand, with a limestone-paved walk-through intersecting the meticulously lit garden that leads to the double-storey, rendered facade. The home features six spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms plus an outdoor shower. The central living area, which includes a

granite kitchen, lounge, and dining can be opened up to fully integrate the indooroutdoor living area, lending itself to both large gatherings and intimate get-togethers. On the second level is a spacious second living area or multi-purpose room with floor to ceiling windows looking on to the front garden and across Lake Monger reserve. What was once a dated 1960s home is now one of West Leederville’s finest, testament to the owner's vision and innovative design. ■

Magical makeover An old knockdown was transformed from the ugly duckling on the block into the beautiful swan, writes JANE EVANS FAR from traditional, this renovated North Fremantle home is so much more. Once a circa 1950s knockdown on the highest block in the area, the owner describes the makeover as “taking an old dump and transforming it into a gorgeous modern home”. Clean lines and a clever ergonomic design, overseen by award-winning designer Tom Brooking, create a truly stunning property, with materials such as timber, steel, Caeser stone, terrazzo and travertine providing a rich, warm ambience that flows throughout. A corrugated iron wave-shaped roof attached to the second storey addition – the master suite – perfectly frames a sweeping vista across North Fremantle, the ocean and out to Rottnest. The view is simply breathtaking. The extravagant master bedroom is enormous and features full height marble tiling in the open ensuite as well as a separate dressing room and a large private deck to take in the panoramic ocean views. There are three additional bedrooms on

the first floor. The unique facade of the home features louvres on the windows to make use of the elements and allow the crisp ocean breeze to sweep through. Generous open-plan living areas flow on to a stunning alfresco area which gives to a lap pool and landscaped lawn area. The sleek state-of-the-art kitchen is fitted with quality stainless steel appliances and custom high gloss cabinetry. While bold, artistic elements have been incorporated into the design of the home, efforts have also been made to ensure it is environmentally friendly. Solar panels and recycled materials have been used (the timber floorboards in the living area are from the original Bassendean gymnasium), and three rainwater tanks are positioned along the western border of the home. In its transformation from ugly duckling to beautiful swan, this remarkable home has exceeded the owner’s expectations and is sure to leave a lasting impression on those who view it. ■

Home embraces senses Harmony is evident the moment you walk through the doors or into the tranquil gardens, writes CARMELLE WILKINSON AS I sip on my espresso, courtesy of the home’s fabulous Miele coffee machine, and gaze out to the tropical garden with lagoon swimming pool, I could be mistaken for thinking I was in my own private sanctuary. With a seal of approval from a Feng Shui master, the layout and natural flow of this quintessential Dalkeith home has been configured to promote health, happiness and prosperity. The harmonious environment is evident as soon as you walk in the entrance of this architect designed home, with a koi pond and water feature providing the soothing sounds of trickling water.

Wrapping around the north-facing Balinese garden complete with pagoda cabana, lush foliage and waterfall, the home enjoys a gorgeous outlook from every room. Lovingly refurbished, the home features brand new carpets, light fittings, bathrooms, kitchen, cabinetry and temperature controlled wine cellar, which can store 1000 bottles of your finest drops. Featuring four large bedrooms and four bathrooms, the home has fantastic separation and is ideal for a family. Two master suites give parents the option of retreating upstairs to their private haven or to the back of the home where they can be

closer to minor bedrooms (for those with younger children). The owner told Residential the real hub of the home was the stunning kitchen/dining area, with Caesar stone bench tops, marble splashbacks and up stands, soft-close drawers, quality Miele appliances and a separate wet kitchen. Connecting the two living zones of the home the ‘hub’ also features a jet master fireplace and has direct access to the alfresco area, which is perfect for entertaining. The owner said another one of her favourite areas in the home would have to be the versatile theatre/lounge room at the front of the home. “I do yoga here with five others and there is plenty of space and a nice outlook over the garden and pool,’’ she said. Oozing quality and style throughout, the

home also features a Bose outdoor sound system, heaps of storage, travertine floors, Cbus wiring and spilt system air conditioning. ■

Timeless classic From a grocery store 100 years ago to a fine home today after extensive renovations that have remained true to its Victorian architecture and feel, writes JANE EVANS

THERE is such a beautiful, old-fashioned ambience to this prominent Claremont home. Built in the early 1900s, the property was originally the Bennett Brothers’ grocery store. Today, the commanding residence on the corner of Chester and Agett roads pays fitting homage to the stunning Victorian Italianate architecture of the period. The home was renovated during the 1980s but retains a timeless, European inspired feel. It reminds me of a Parisian apartment, only larger. As I walk through the wrought iron gate and solid timber doors of the entrance, it strikes me that that the interior of the home is just as

intriguing as the outside. A blend of quality, original and recycled materials combine with superior modern fittings to create a rich and vibrant home. These include textured rendered walls, warm terracotta and timber floors, wrought iron detailing and plantation shutters. Exposed brick and granite adds rustic charm to the country-style kitchen and spacious dining area, which features bifold timber french doors out to a beautiful north-facing courtyard with a spa and stone water feature. An elegant lounge room with a stunning gas fireplace leads to the home’s original entrance hall and a third bedroom, which could be used

very practically as a home office with its own entrance. On the second level, a sitting area is flanked by a choice of two master bedrooms, one, very spacious with a balcony overlooking the courtyard and ensuite and the other, also with an ensuite but featuring a Juliet balcony overlooking the street. Both would do me just fine. This magnificent property is homely and inviting, yet so utterly stylish. What it may lack in space (by today’s standards), it more then makes up for in loveliness. ■

FOR SALE You will find little opposition to the claims that Mount Street is the most desirable residential address in Perth. For a start, it’s a short stroll across the footbridge to the Terrace in one direction and Kings Park the opposite. Perched on the edge of Mt. Eliza, Benjamin Heights is a boutique and exclusive apartment building constructed in 2002. There are just 5 full floor apartments in the development which is complemented with a luxurious lobby and adjoining board room, lap pool, gym and spa. The penthouse is on offer for the first time. This unique property has the lion’s share of the building with the exclusivity of 531 sqm of the building on the title compared with 294 sqm for the apartments below. The exclusive areas are made up of 3 parking bays, balconies, storage, independent office, roof garden and luxuriously

appointed 3 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment. You hear people talk about ‘breathtaking views’ all the time. These words are bandied about loosely by a lot of agents about a lot of properties that are for sale. The view from this amazing apartment will truly stop you in your tracks. Like me, you too will walk away with a lasting impression that, with every recall moment, you can’t help but smile each and every time.
