COLOURFUL DIY ENCHANTING BOLD FUN

Lizzie & Joseph

A Magical & Vibrant Handmade Wedding... Photos by Studio1208 www.studio1208.com How did you find love? In restaurant Gordon Ramsay, I was the florist and Joe was a waiter. How did you try to make your day unique? I guess the most unique part of our day was the random combination of different colours, vibes, music and entertainment. This wasn’t deliberate, it just happened; and as a result the wedding ended up being more interesting than we anticipated! I run a floristry business in London, so I knew my guests were expecting to see a lot of floral decoration. So I decided to make my church service and dress all about the flowers (my 8 bridesmaids had also worn a different coloured floral crown each); but at the venue I wanted to focus on ribbons, moss and glitter, rather than your classic floristry (I didn’t want to feel like I was at work)! For my tables, my team created tree sculptures covered in hanging rainbow coloured ribbons; and we had moss table runners, scattered multi coloured pom poms and tiny bottles of fairy dust glitter as wedding favours. We also made our own confetti using the same Pom Poms, sequins and glitter. I filled my dance floor ceiling with balloons, and released them later in the day. My table plan was a series of planted birdcages and the SPRING/SUMMER 2017

ceiling of our marquee was a ribbon waterfall. It was a really beautiful colour explosion. Outside the marquee entrance we created a rainbow forest of hand painted birch trees. I’m very proud that the wedding decorations came together the way they did, I wasn’t really certain it would work as a whole concept - but it totally did thanks to my talented floral team! What did you wear? My wedding dress was created by my friends at Satin and Silk in Hereford. They literally made me my dream wedding dress. It was created by using a beautiful classic super-sized wedding dress that they found for me in their ‘last season’

selection. They then turned it into the dress that I was seeing in my dreams by adding in hundreds of extra metres of the palest green tulle, and then hand stitching hundreds of flowers on. They went above and beyond with my dress, and I still can’t quite believe they made it so perfect for me. I felt like a modern-day movie princess! What were your favourite details about the day? My dress, the floral cocktails, the awesome food, my cake installation, the music, the enchanted tree table arrangements… everything was a favourite detail to be honest! I literally couldn’t choose.

What advice would you give a couple about to get married? Don’t pick a theme, just pick out the things you like - it just comes together better that way and isn’t forced. Invest in your photography and videography as it lasts a lifetime. Lastly Planning weddings are stressful… try to enjoy it! What was it like working with your photographer? I LOVE THEM- I love everything about Maria & Nick at Studio 1208 and what they do is second to none. They are absolutely faultless.

How to host a good Wedding Words by Canvas & Stone www.canvasandstone.co.uk

A word from exclusive, country house wedding collective, Canvas and Stone. Made up of some of our favourite houses: Dewsall Court, Elmore Court, Iscoyd Park, Pennard House and Wasing Park, they know a thing or two about hosting a good wedding. Here they discuss a few ad hoc ideas to make your wedding day extra special. If you’re planning your wedding, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got all the elements covered to host a really amazing day for you, your family and friends. Moments of love, laughter, beauty and tenderness. That’s all we’re after, right? But what about surprise? Planned surprises that is, that you get to orchestrate. Here we share some non budget breaking ideas of how to add some extra entertainment and surprise to your day.

Wandering musicians at Dewsall Court Photo by www.emmagardiner.com 22

MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

Why walk when you can dance? Whether it’s from the car park to the venue, the church to the reception, the drinks to the dinner, there are always opportunities and moments in between scheduled events to rouse, serenade or accompany your guests with music. Choose the style of music you most prefer, and where it would set the best atmosphere, then let the musicians do the entertaining. We love the idea of an accompanied procession like this one at Dewsall Court.

Hidden Treasures Perhaps your whole wedding is set in one venue space. Maybe you’d like the idea of a hidden venue as well? With summer on the way, what about a secret bar? One for you to know about and your guests to find out?! Perhaps a whiskey

bar like at Iscoyd Park, tucked away in the garden with a cocktail-making barman at the helm? Or maybe a speakeasy style moody saloon bar for the afterhours crowd like this red room at Wasing Park?

Iscoyd Park’s whiskey bar and Wasing Park’s Stable Lodge make great extra spaces to hold back as a surprise.

The tipis at Pennard House complete with real beds, lights and crisp linen.

Adventurous Accommodation Reserve accommodation for your nearest friends and don’t tell them the finer details. Hire beautifully styled tipis like the ones permanently pitched at Pennard House in the summer, or luxurious bell tents to have in the garden or field near your wedding venue so that your guests can sleep at the same location as you. This means you’ll have your favourite people around you all day and all night without any worry that their taxi will pull them away from all the fun.

Take It Outside There’s a lot of bringing the outdoors indoors at weddings, but don’t ignore the possibilities of all that outdoor space you can use. The trick is to use it lightly so that if the heavens do open, your entire wedding programme isn’t going to be disrupted. Chances are the rain might clear anyway and you will get to enjoy a few moments outside at some stage of the day. We love the warmth and atmosphere that firepits add to a wedding, either for keeping warm, or roasting marshmallows on. Take advantage of any extras the wedding might have as part of their set up. A wood fired oven that serves pizza can add a relaxed vibe to your wedding. Use for either a round of canapes at the drinks reception or for feeding the late night crowd before they head home. 24

Rack of lamb with Ratatouille and Dauphinoise Potatoes Recipe from Dewsall Court’s new wedding menu www.dewsall.com

Looking to create something delicious for a Sunday lunch or special occasion? Canvas and Stone have selected a delicious recipe from the 2017 wedding menu at one of their country house venues, Dewsall Court. All of their meat is ethically raised, and locally sourced from Herefordshire butcher Neil Powell, and cooked for all weddings by Dewsall’s head chef, Jonny Evans. Ingredients Three Bone Rack of Lamb French trimmed, chined and scored. Home Made Lamb stock or good quality stock (not salty) For the sauce 1 Onion 3 Sticks of celery 1 Small carrot 2 Bay leaves A Small bunch of thyme 1 Sprig of rosemary (chopped finely and added at the very end) 3 Tsp of redcurrant jelly 1 Large glass of red wine 1 Sherry glass of port Dauphinoise 1kg Maris piper potatoes A Small bunch of thyme 2 Cloves of garlic 500 ml of double cream Ratatouille 1 Red pepper 1 Green pepper 1 Yellow pepper 26

MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

1 Red onion 2 Cloves of garlic 2 Courgette 1 Aubergine 1 Tin of chopped tomatoes all liquid drained 1 Small bunch of chives 1 Handful of basil leaves 1 Tsp of tomato puree Method: To make the sauce: Finely dice all the vegetables. Sweat down in a very small amount of olive oil on a low heat. Add all the booze, increase heat until two-thirds of the liquid has gone. Add the lamb stock, bay, thyme and redcurrant. Reduce sauce until desired consistency is reached, check seasoning and finish with very finely chopped rosemary. For the Dauphinoise: Reduce cream until it just starts to thicken. Thinly slice potatoes and add to cream with a tied bundle of thyme and finely grated garlic, wilt potatoes in the cream mix until they become bendy, season well and pour into an oven dish lined with parchment paper taking care to remove the thyme. Wrap in foil and bake at 170°C until potatoes are well cooked. Remove from the oven, leave for an hour then press and chill overnight. Turn out and portion, place on a lined tray ready to be reheated at 180°C when needed.

For the Lamb: Using your prepared and well-seasoned lamb, seal in a frying pan until brown all over, concentrating on rendering the fat. Finish in a hot oven until cooked medium to medium rare. Rest, when ready to serve slice between each bone. For the Ratatouille: Dice all vegetables into required size (I like them to be finely diced) Puree the garlic, cook all together in a large heavy based sauce pan with a splash of olive oil on a moderate heat,

add drained tomatoes and tomato puree. Finish with herbs and season well. Samantha, owner and manager at Dewsall Court says, ‘We’re really excited by our new menus this year and can’t wait to share them with all our couples and their guests. I recommend following this main course with our naughty but delicious blackcurrant cream pudding. Imagine lots of them being served down the table as a sharing style pudding - so much colour!’

BOHO FREE -SPIRITED WILD ROMANTIC FLORAL

Free-spirited Boho Bridal Inspiration

A free-spirited modern bridal shoot; for brides that make their own rules and rock a wild, romantic, bohemian streak. Photography by Rock Your Love Photography www.rockyourlovephotography.com  Spring Flowers By Emma of Ladybird Flowers www.flowersladybird.com I just love spring! I’m full of hope and excitement, knowing that the warmer weather is here and that spring flowers are now in bloom! Spring is certainly my favorite flower season of the year. The variety of flowers available is simply remarkable, not to mention the colours and the smells! For spring brides, I highly recommend using lots of flowers in the bridal bouquet. Take advantage of what the season has to offer and fill it to the brim with fresh spring flowers. 28

Here I’ve used a mix of miss piggy roses, blush peonies, white spray roses, purple freesias, two shades of astible and lots of foliage. Arranging these flowers together excites the eyes with the mixture of shades and textures, styled in a relaxed yet elegant way. A great way to extend the spring theme through to the wedding breakfast is to have a flower instillation full of the flowers used in the bridal bouquet. This creates a fabulous feature for you and your guests throughout the meal and can then double up as a photo wall later in the evening!

When it comes to styling, think handcrafted and personal, rather than formal. Calligraphy place cards, gold dipped features, a crochet or macramĂŠ ceremony backdrop embellished with foliage and beautiful blooms will create an intimate atmosphere that your guests will love. Joining trestle tables together and adding a vast array of brass candlesticks will give your reception a truly amazing feel.

Go Eco for your wedding Words by Emma at Paperless Weddings www.uk.paperlesswedding.com… Do you recycle at home? Do you buy fairtrade products? Do you compost food scraps? If so, why not apply some of the principles you already follow to your wedding as well?  Wedding planning is already a tricky task without adding an eco-friendly twist into the mix. The good news is that I can share some of our top tips that can not only help you have a greener wedding, but could even save you money along the way.  Go online and save some paper! We go online to do so much these days, from banking to the big food shop. Why not swap your wedding invitation for a beautiful, and oh-so-green digital wedding invitation? Save on paper and 4040MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

reduce your carbon footprint by sending these clever email invitations to your guests, who can then RSVP through your personally designed website. Swapping the glossy magazine for a digital version is also a great way of saving paper, as well as the costs. I mean, how wonderful is Mr & Mrs Unique magazine? It speaks for itself! Buy seasonal and locally for that fresh, clean vibe Whether it’s food or flowers, buying according to season means that it does not have to be flown/transported in from far afield. It is kinder on your pocket, too. Just think of those fresh seasonal veggies of all shapes and sizes. Embrace those ‘ugly’ carrots that some

might throw away. Ask your suppliers if they use Fairtrade products too, and see how they recycle the leftover food. Picture a venue full of beautiful seasonal flowers that might have only been picked the day before! Also see if there is a local charity such as Floral Angels (www.floralangels.com) that might take your flowers to hospices and nursing homes. It’s a great way to spread the love. Love Lotus glamping tents

Pick a location or venue that cares We love the ethos of Love Lotus (www.lovelotus.co.uk), who featured in last month’s magazine and offer beautiful glamping tents. Eco minded principals are at their core. Some of the most beautiful outdoor venues have great green values that might include solar panels, eco cleaning products and great recycling practices. If opting for a city wedding, don’t worry; it doesn’t mean that you can’t do your bit. Ask your venue if they care about low food miles. Do they have a recycling policy? Getting married at the same venue as the reception reduces carbon emissions by not travelling from place to place. Your guests might also all be able to use public transport if it’s in London! 41

Reuse and Recycle You don’t have to go new for everything; and that even includes your dress or suit. We love items that can tell a story. A dress with a history, that you could now weave your story into it. There are some amazing places that can alter dresses to suit you and places that specialise in selling upcycled wedding dresses, such as Lucky Sixpence (www.luckysixpencebridal.com). Decorate your venue with some great finds from charity shops or old books that are around your house. Or look at hiring in tea sets and decorations from one supplier. The reuse of these items is an excellent way of cutting costs, reducing your footprint and supporting local small businesses.

42

MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

Tiny swaps go a long way There are a lot of traditions surrounding weddings that could have an eco-friendly alternative, so here are a few you might be able to consider. • Swap your confetti to bubbles. They can also create great photos! • Instead of a flower bouquet, have a button or brooch one. You get to keep it, too! • Eat your wedding cake for dessert. Very often your beautiful cake gets wasted, so make sure you plan in when everyone can enjoy it. • For favours, instead of a novelty item, why not offer wildflower seeds so you can spread the love far and wide? • Instead of a gift list, why don’t you ask for a charity donation instead? We hope these ideas have got you thinking. If everyone did just a few of them we would all help reduce our impact on our wonderful world.

A Colourful, Fairground Wedding… Photos by Freckle Photography www.frecklephotography.co.uk

What was your inspiration for your wedding day? We took inspiration from all of our favourite things: Japan, the films Up and Adventureland and of course the fairground element of our reception venue. How did you find love? We have known each other for a long time as our best friends are siblings! Love blossomed one fateful summer over drinks and dancing in the local nightclub.

How did you try to make your day unique? We didn’t set out to make the day unique; we just didn’t apply any restrictions to our planning and decided to have fun with it. We wanted lots of colour and to inject as much of our life into the day as possible.

What did you wear? I wore an incredible embellished gown from Needle & Thread bought on ASOS. I’d actually picked it before we got engaged and then spent many months tracking it down once I had the ring on my finger.

Paper Leaf Garland DIY Design & Words by Fleur de Lace www.fleurdelace.co.uk Photos by Sharon Cooper Photography www.sharoncooper.co.uk

I’m delighted to share with you this DIY on how to create an alternative foliage look. Deck the walls, create a backdrop or table runner. If you don’t have the machine to get your sew on, use hot glue instead! What do you need? Sewing Machine and thread, paper, pencil, scissors and string.

56

MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

Instructions: 1. Layer the paper and make a stencil so that you can draw around your leaf shape and cut out a few layers at a time. 2. Fold the leaves so you have a 3D effect. You can fold them in wads to save time. I pinched up to ž of the way up the leaf. 3. Set the sewing machine to a wide zigzag. 4. Sew in a straight line with your zigzag stitch up the string, adding the leaves at regular intervals. 5. You could sew to any length you want. I used around 30 leaves for each meter of garland. The stitched string makes an awesome raw look. Hope you have fun, and you could use any shape and any colour. Our Real Bride Ellen Wright Photos by Joe and Charlotte www.joeandcharlotte.co.uk

It’s the first day of school.. Introduce yourself. I am a creative in Advertising and I have a streetwear fashion brand called Extragged. I am also a huge David Bowie fanatic and 80’s toy collector. Jim is a heating engineer and a football nut... so two very different worlds. We do both have our love for travel in common and have travelled all over the world together. How did you meet your partner and how did you get engaged? We both went to school together and started going out when we were 16… and have been together ever since! We didn’t get engaged until 2015. It was at Machu Pitchu in Peru when Jim proposed. We had just done the Inca trail together and he had brought and carried my engagement ring all the way there. Was there anything you really didn’t want to happen? Or anything that was a must have? When Jim proposed to me he said straight away; ‘Let’s get married in that Cave in Lanzarote,’ and that was that! We had visited it the previous year and were totally bowled away by the place. We just wanted to be married in that cave. I also wanted to wear red. The rest we really didn’t mind. We also felt quite strongly that we wanted a non-religious ceremony and we didn’t want to follow any traditions. We wanted to create a wedding that was 100% reflective of us as a couple and didn’t want to follow any formats of a standard wedding. Did your dream wedding match up to reality? In every way. We compromised on nothing. I am so happy we did every little thing we wanted and stood our ground when people raised some eyebrows or questioned it. I am also so pleased I wore a red dress. It’s my favourite colour what I feel most comfortable in. 58

59

What did you wear and why did you choose this style of dress? So, I am not your normal bride. I hate following traditions of any sorts, so does Jim. We both decided our wedding should 100% be a reflection of us as a couple and not influenced by anyone or anything else. The same went for my dress. When Jim proposed we discussed straight away (in Peru) that we would get married in the Lava tunnel we had visited the previous October. So with that already in mind, I designed my dress. I hate white. It doesn’t look right on me. I wanted to design a dress, which was my dream dress. I wanted to wear my favourite colour and I wanted everything about my dress to be about Jim and I, and our lives together.

I wanted to feel super comfortable in it. I went for a bright red dress… but I wanted to keep it floaty. I wanted long sleeves but a backless look. I am also not a fan of frills and lace but I wanted detailing on my dress. So, I illustrated a design down the front of my dress, which incorporated drawings of our pets, two bunny rabbits and a French bulldog (Rebel Rebel, Ziggy Stardust and Jean Genie). Being a huge Bowie fan, and sadly being married the same year as his death I wanted to create a tribute to him, too. I used a Bowie lyric from ‘Let’s Dance’, “My love for you would break my heart in two”’- which I scrawled into a heart on my chest, alongside stars and lighting bots up my sleeves. I worked with Wilden Bride to make my dream dress reality. Charlotte was amazing in taking my ideas and shaping the dress that fitted my figure perfectly. She got all the movement, colours and detailing just right. She even convinced me to have a few sparkles sewn on, which really set it off.

What was unique about your day? I think from start to finish our day was unique‌ from the location to the format of the day, the outfits to the bespoke decorations. We love music, Bowie, travelling, unique places, good food, no traditions. We are casual and laid back and all of this was basically the benchmark for our decisions. Being a designer/illustrator I designed all the wedding stationary myself. I wanted a real personal touch again into our world and there is nothing more personal than a drawing. I drew an illustration of Jim and myself, which were use on the invitations.

Now it’s all over what advice would you give to couples getting married? Do what you want and not what other people want you to do. You will meet resistance along the way from friends and family as everyone has their own opinion on what a wedding should be like. Just make sure you are doing it for you and your partner and not for anyone else.

Eclectic, Folklore Bridal Inspiration... Photos by Assassynation www.assassynation.co.uk Brought to you by the team at The Eclectic Wedding Extravaganza www.allaboutewe.co.uk

Our Venue: Walcot Hall… www.walcothall.com There was no question in our mind that Walcot Hall was the venue we wanted to use for this shoot; you can easily see why it’s considered as one of the top wedding venues in Shropshire. With its turquoise freestanding ballroom, characterful accommodation and eclectic furnishings, it really is a feast for the eyes and perfect unique wedding venue. The 30 acres of grounds, including one of the finest arboretums in Britain, offer a wide variety of panoramas, floral displays and garden features including the extensive lake, walled courtyard, unusual statues and fountain.

Inspiration: Jo From The Couture Company… www.the-couture-company.co.uk We were absolutely thrilled when we got together with Erica from Mr & Mrs Unique for this shoot, I have been itching to work with this awesome blog for quite a while now, and this shoot was just the best opportunity EVER!!! We decided we wanted to use Folklore as our 66

inspiration, but give it a dark fairytale twist. The dresses and looks we created incorporated all kinds of creatures from moths and spiders, to Hummingbirds and Cranes. We placed strong accent tones against pretty pastels and metallics to give it a real mix of textures and tones. Sequins and sparkles were overlaid with soft silk georgette Kimonos with ornate Obi inspired belts tied in at the waist. What I love about this shoot the most was finding our real-life, everyday couple, Amy and Richard and transforming them into King and Queen of their own woodland kingdom. It was magical‌ We were also overjoyed to have our supporting woodland nymphs in the guise of the beautiful Gingerella and the gorgeous Florence who were just wonderful.

Our first foray into cake was to make a bulldog cake for Rich’s sisters birthday of her beloved pet Lady, totally on a whim, and here we are now! What advice would you give to help them chose the right cake baker for their wedding? Have a look at the cake bakers portfolio and if you see something that inspires you, even if it is not quite what you have in mind but you love their style, then make contact. It’s always good if the couple have an idea, no matter how fully formed when contacting bakers i.e a few examples of styles they have seen and like. The more information you can give to your cake maker the better – never be afraid to give too much! What inspires you? Pop culture, alternative and contemporary art. Vinyl & retro toys. Being able to create, and do what you love for a living. Projects you are most proud of? We made a Death Star for Star Wars. We also made R2D2 and C3PO as lifesize (talking) cakes. We make a lot of Unicorns, which are always a lot of fun. We have also made a few Carousel inspired cakes recently. We made a City of Cake installation for Leeds Indie Food Fest, which was colourful, exciting and nothing like we had done before. 78

MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

What’s your top wedding advice? THERE’S NO RIGHT WAY TO HAVE A WEDDING. It’s your day so make sure it’s about the two of you enjoying yourselves first and foremost in the company of your nearest and dearest. Don’t let too many people offer their opinions about how you should have your day. They are probably just trying to be helpful but only you know the true you…oh and don’t scrimp on the cake ;) What makes for a great wedding? Ones that really reflect what a couple are like (we always prefer the less traditional wedding). And a free bar is always a winner for the guests. If you are interested in The Tattooed Bakers creating a cake for you wedding or event, please visit their website to find out more about them and contact details www.tattooedbakers.com

Where did the love of cakes come from and what made you start up your business? We are both big foodies and Eddie’s dad is a chef so that is where our love for cake has come from. We were both frustrated artists in our old jobs and decided that food and especially cake was our chosen medium and reason for starting up the business.

City Wedding Relaxed Intimate Creative Unique

Ella & Jamie A Chic & Stylish London Wedding… Photos by Binky Nixon Photography www.binkynixon.com Was there any theme or inspiration for your wedding day? There was no theme as such, but we are both designers, so I wanted there to be an element of that shown in the table settings. Each person had a different coloured Pantone card with their menu choices on and they were edged with copper - a colour that we used on our wedding stationary and throughout the wedding. How did you find love? We met at the Royal College of Art, London while we were studying for our Masters. How did you try to make your day unique? I tried to make it as unique to us as possible by designing and making as much of what we needed/ wanted myself. This included the wedding stationary, the bouquet, the flower girls’ tutu’s, the button holes, the flower plank that hung from the beams, all the flowers in the venue, the table settings, the large snack jars, the kids treat bags and ice cream jars and the wedding cakes… I think I maybe took on too much…but it was worth it! SPRING/SUMMER 2017

83

What did you wear? I wore the most amazing Rime Arodaky skirt and a little camisole top. I wanted something simple but elegant. The skirt was beautifully cut & had a gorgeous lace train & scalloped waistband. My shoes were the softest pink with a sparkly toe. My flower crown was made by Emma from Blossom & Bramble florists in Bedfordshire. I wanted a softer, slightly bohemian look with my hair down and the flower crown. Jamie wore a 3-piece navy suit & navy polka dot tie from ASOS and tan brogues. Slightly hipster, but he looked very handsome! Joey (our 2yr old) wore matching navy trousers and waistcoat and tan brogues, too!

84

MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

What were your favourite details about the day? I loved the flower girls’ tutu’s with their little glitter Converse pumps & Jamie and Joey’s matching outfits. I was also really happy with how the flower plank turned out. It looked great hanging from the beams in the venue. We are both glad we included the fox masks that Jamie and I wore to get some great photos. Some people were skeptical, but I think the photos are amazing and we wanted something a bit quirky and creative. We had the coolest Photo Booth to capture some very entertaining pictures too. Oh, and the magician we had to perform throughout dinner blew our minds!

What advice would you give a couple about to get married? It’s really great to want to add your own touch and stamp on things, but try not to take on too much yourself. Make a list and scrub out the unrealistic, or don’t be afraid to ask for some help. It is not worth wearing yourself out and staying up all hours before the big day.

8686MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

What was it like working with your photographer? I went to school with Binky, but hadn’t seen her since we left, which was quite a long time ago; so seeing her again for the first time on our wedding day was a treat in itself. The way Binky works is really special. She manages to blend in seamlessly so that you don’t even notice she is there snapping away half the time; and by doing so she managed to captured such amazing natural shots of us and our guests - which is exactly what we had asked for.

Everything You Really Need To Know About...

Woodland Weddings Words by GreenAcres Woodland Weddings www.greenacreswoodlandweddings.co.uk

Now we might be biased but we’re going to come right out with it now – woodland weddings are all kinds of brilliant. There’s a special kind of freedom that comes with getting married under a canopy of trees, and you really can’t beat Mother Nature’s take on wedding styling and design. We know from our experience that there can still be a lot to think about with woodland weddings so here’s the GreenAcres guide to everything you really need know… Ceremonies As your ceremony really is the centrepiece of your wedding day, let’s start here. Firstly, what kind of ceremony are you looking for? If you want a legally binding woodland wedding then you need to make sure that your chosen spot holds all the necessary licences, and don’t forget to ask how many guests you can invite. Even the most spacious venue will still have a maximum number! However, if you’re looking for a Humanist or celebrant-led ceremony then you’ll have a lot more freedom so talk to your venue and your celebrant about your plans to come up with the perfect event. Of course, you’ll still need to attend to the legalities at some point, but the ceremony you share with guests under the trees can be anything you want. Facilities Every woodland wedding venue is different so it’s really important to check and confirm the facilities that each offers. Some are literally just woodlands; while some, like GreenAcres woodlands, include beautiful buildings and ‘proper’ car parking facilities. It sounds crazy but don’t underestimate the importance of things such as maintained pathways, particularly if you have any guests with mobility issues or families bringing young children in pushchairs. It can also be a bonus to work with a venue that carefully manages its woodland unless you want a totally wild wedding! SPRING/SUMMER 2017

Practicalities In all our wedding dreams, the weather is beautiful, the food and drink is plentiful and it’s all fabulous. However, we know that even the most laidback celebrations need to be planned to some degree, and you do need to consider the practicalities. What are your contingency plans in case of any weather extremes? Don’t forget that super hot days can be as tricky as downpours if you’re going to be outside for some time. Who’ll be providing the food and drink? What time can suppliers bring in everything that’s needed? Who’ll be responsible for clearing up after the wedding and where will you be travelling from or to before and after your wedding? It’s really important to go through everything so that you can completely relax and enjoy every minute of your woodland wedding. At GreenAcres Woodland Weddings, we offer beautiful ancient woodlands, stunning awardwinning buildings and all the help you could ever need to create your own personal wedding day at sites around England. You can find out more at www. greenacreswoodlandweddings.co.uk and we’d love to welcome you soon. Spring/Summer Styling FROM WEDDING YURTS

A Signature Cocktail From Wedding Yurts Words & Recipe by Lizzie at Wedding Yurts www.weddingyurts.com Photos by Captured by Katrina www.capturedbykatrina.co.uk It certainly feels good to know that winter is behind us and we’ve got the blissful months of spring and summer stretching out ahead of us. There’s so much beauty all around us that it’s no surprise that so many couples take inspiration from the natural world at this time of year. Here are just a few of my styling ideas that are perfect for spring and summer, plus a recipe for a rather fabulous cocktail that your guests will love, whenever you serve it. Firstly, let’s talk styling. When I’m on the road with Wedding Yurts, my travelling wedding venue, I love to use seasonal and local delights to decorate our handcrafted yurts. During spring and summer, the choice is literally endless but here are some of my favourite ideas: Of course you have to include masses of seasonal flowers and there are plenty of homegrown varieties around in spring and summer. Your florist or stylist will be able to advise you, so choose what’s naturally perfect rather than using blooms that have been forced or imported. Nothing beats British peonies, ranunculus, scented stocks and narcissi! Don’t forget to consider using spring blossom or foliage and both are great options if you’re on a budget. 98

MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

Seasonal menus are another must-have, so talk to your caterers to make the most of the best fresh produce. Baby vegetables and early salads are great when the weather gets warmer; but for early spring hearty feasts with sharing platters of local cheeses, cured meats, artisan breads and homemade pickles are always popular. Similarly, fruity cocktails and cordials are a seasonal must and the first of the latest batch of English wines are now also available. Cheers! When spring rolls around after a long and dark winter, everyone wants to get outside. How about creating a luxurious outdoor seating area so that your guests can enjoy the fresh air? A stylist like myself or furniture hire company can bring in some fabulous chairs and sofas, or straw bales covered with throws and rugs are an easy DIY. Speaking of being outside, we all know that the weather can be a fickle friend so why not provide rugs and wraps for guests? These are great if you’re planning an outdoor element to your party and they’re also really handy if the weather is colder than you anticipated. Another great way to keep everyone toasty is with a roaring fire. At Wedding Yurts, we’re

| MR & MRS UNIQUE99 99

well known for our well-stoked fire pits and I love seeing guests still sat around them in the early hours. If you want your party to last, a fire will always encourage people to linger. Lastly, don’t forget the lighting. Candles and fairy lights are wonderfully atmospheric all year round and in spring, when the evenings are still quite dark, they’re very special indeed. Candles in summer also add a really soft glow to your wedding and look incredibly effective in those gorgeous long, dusky hours.

Espresso Martini Recipe Now, let’s move onto the cocktail and I promised you, it’s a good one. Espresso Martinis are pretty much our favourite cocktail and they’re very popular in our Yurt Bar all year round. You’ll also be pleased to hear that they’re really very simple to make so here’s our recipe: 1. Brew some coffee – I use organic espresso from Extract Coffee in Bristol. Their beans are always freshly roasted, so they smell and taste amazing! 2. Wait for coffee to cool.

3. Chill your Martini glass with ice. 4. Add ice to your cocktail shaker. 5. Add 1 shot of coffee, 1 shot of coffee liqueur, we use patron and 1 shot of vodka, we used Black Cow, the vodka is made from milk! 6. Shake up and poor into your chilled glass. 7. Decorate with a few whole coffee beans and enjoy with friends snuggled around outdoor fire.

Maybo & Himesh A Colourful, Fusion London Wedding… Photos by Bhavna Barratt www.bhavnabarratt.com Venue: Trinity Buoy Wharf, London www.trinitybuoywharf.com Matthew Oliver Wedding Planner... I really enjoyed working with Maybo and Himesh throughout their planning process, as I got to know them and understand what they were after; and created something that didn’t only reflect the style of the venue, Chainstore, but also represented both Maybo and Himesh and their style. We wanted to work with both cultures to create something colourful and unique, but also to work together so that it didn’t clash or disrupt the main feel of the day.  To us, the main part of a wedding is the atmosphere; and it’s very important to create something that invites guests to enjoy themselves and relax. For this we used great mood lighting, music and a design that created a beautiful atmosphere, which all gelled together! Virginias Vintage Hire... We just love the vibrancy of this wedding. Working with Matthew Oliver is always a huge pleasure, his creative passion and joie de vivre is demonstrated beautifully here with Himesh & Maybo’s wedding. Trinity Buoy Wharf is the perfect complement and setting for our vintage furniture and Himesh & Maybo’s day is so full of colour, bursting with life and a true sense of fun. We are always so incredibly grateful to be part of such a special day and are thrilled when we see the results of what working with such incredible industry talent can achieve. flowers in the venue, the table settings, the large snack jars, the kids treat bags and ice cream jars and the wedding cakes… I think I maybe took on too much…but it was worth it!

What did you wear...? We each had three outfits on the day – Indian, Chinese and British. It just had to be done! What advice would you give a couple about to get married...? Get a wedding planner! The Decades of Bridal Style Photos & Words: Shelley Richmond www.shelleyrichmond.co.uk Bridal style has changed dramatically through the decades, the flowers, the dresses, the hair and make-up trends‌ We wanted to explore our favourite decades and recreate some of these iconic vintage styles inspired by the likes of Twiggy, Marilyn Monroe and Joni Mitchell.

112 MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

1920s We used a beautiful, original 1920’s champagne silk wedding dress with pearl beads and crystal diamantes details. Our inspiration for this look was taken from the Gatsby era, which very much favoured the Art Deco period. A smokey eye, red lips, soft marcel hair waves and a cascading waterfull bouquet completed the look.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017

| MR & MRS UNIQUE 113

1930s For the 1930s we chose a dress, which utilises the bias-cut technique, which was so prevalent in the 1930s. It is cut from silk faconne (jacquard satin), which has beautiful botanical motifs woven within it, and features rose buds at the neckline, shirring detail and full length sleeves.

We match our bride with an opulent, society wedding bouquet in soft pastels and finished in ribbons. Make up and hair inspiration was drawn from the glamour days of Hollywood; light shades of cream eye shadow and gorgeous glossed lips.

114 MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

1940s This simple 1940s gown was handcrafted from parachute silk as materials were scarce during the war years and many people didn’t have the funds to buy expensive fabrics. The sweet peplum shape of this gown is so typical of the

decade. Our bride wears red lipstick as it was seen as being good for the morale of the nation; keeping feminine while carrying out men’s work during the war. To reflect the era of hardship, flowers at the time were simple and mainly sourced from gardens at home.

116 MR & MRS UNIQUE | SPRING/SUMMER 2017

1950s Our bride wears a superglamorous organza dress which is covered in tiny horizontal stripes narrowly spaced on the bodice and wider as they get down the skirt. The sweetheart neckline nipped in waist and flared skirt created a classic 1950s silhouette. We paired this gorgeous wedding dress with a more compact and rounder shaped wedding bouquet. Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn and numerous other Hollywood stars were not only fashion icons but also beauty icons for women around the world and their make-up looks defined the era. It was without doubt the age of glamour. Kohl pencils were used to create a defined line along the upper lash and then swept outward at the outer corners for a winged effect. The brides hair was styled in a true Hollywood glamour; jumbo, bouncy waves.

SPRING/SUMMER 2017

| MR & MRS UNIQUE 117

1960s Bright, beautiful meadow flowers complemented our Twiggy styled bride who wore a sweet and simple 1960s mini-dress. Detail is added to the understated design with a cute bow at the front and sleeve frills, but its the use of the lace that turns this typical1960s style into a stylish wedding gown. With make up the eyes were the main focus with lots of emphasis on the lashes. Lots of eyeliner would be worn with a dramatic cut crease, usually teamed with white eyeliner on the waterline and eyelid. Bottom lashes were also very often drawn on. Skin was kept pale and matte along with the lips so no attention was drawn away from the eyes. The pixi haircut came into fashion in the 60’s. Beehives and bouffant hairstyles were also very fashionable in this era. Â

1970s: A true flower power, hippy bride with over-sized floral crown and a bouquet made of sunflowers; a classic flower child emblem of the 70’s. The original 1970s dress is a gorgeous warm cream colour, and features class 70s details like the long flared sleeves and gathered valance frill at the hem. The scooped neckline, fitted waist, and delicate crochet lace trim complete the boho /hippie vibe. Wedding hair became a lot more relaxed and makeup became a lot more natural, with many cosmetic companies starting to advertise ‘barely there looks’. Going For Gold… From ‘The Homemade Wedding Cake’ by Natasha Collins Available from Murdoch Books, £20. Photography by Nathan Pask. To make the sponge: Prep: 30 minutes Ingredients are for one 7” cake: For multiple tier measurements refer to the book 100 g (3½ oz) unsalted butter 100 g (3½ oz) unrefined sugar Zest and juice of half an orange 100 g (3½ oz) self-raising flour 2 eggs 1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F). 2. Grease and line the relevant-size cake tin(s). 3. Beat the butter and sugar together with the orange zest for at least 5 minutes. The mixture should become noticeably paler and take on a fluffy appearance. 4. Add the eggs (one at a time) and beat them in well. If the mixture stars to curdle, add a spoonful of the flour and beat again. 5. Sift the flour into the mixture and use a large spoon to gently fold it in. 6. Stir in the orange juice. 7. Spoon the batter into the cake tin. Bake for 20–25 minutes. The cake is ready when the top feels firm but springy to the touch and a cake tester or skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. 8. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

To make the ganache: Prep: 5 minutes plus up to 2 hours cooling time. 500 g (1 lb 2 oz) dark chocolate (54% cocoa) 250 ml (9 fl oz/1 cup) orange juice Heat the orange juice in a pan until boiling, pour over the chocolate and leave for a few minutes then stir. Allow to cool for an hour or until the mixture is thick enough to spread but not solid. Decorating the cakes: Prep: 5–10 minutes Equipment Medium round-tipped paintbrush 1/3–3/4 of a 25 ml (1 fl oz) bottle of edible gold paint 1. Pour the gold paint onto the top of the cake tier. The layer of paint should be fairly thin, but thick enough so that you cannot see the ganache underneath. Spread it out with the paintbrush continuing up to and then over the edges. 2. You should find that drips are starting to form. Use the brush to control the drips, encouraging some to drip more by pulling them down a little; if you feel a drip is dripping too far, scrape a little of it off. If there are gaps in the line of drips then pour a little more paint in the relevant spaces. Leave the paint to dry overnight.
