EURO FALLS AGAIN By AMY LEIBNIZ

The euro exchange rate fell again in trading on Thursday, continuing the trend that has disappointed many European investors for years. The current value stands at 0.05 euro per USD and and 0.5 e uro per chinese yuan. This is down 1% from last year’s exchange rate and down 200% from the rate in 2020. Stock market experts blame the decreasing industrial output of Europe, the unregulated commerce of South Asia, and the migration of business across all sectors to other parts of the world. “I’m quite worried,” remarked Albert Heinz, economist for The Guardian in London. “Things just keep getting worse for us over here.” European investors are getting more depressed about the situation, though the space elevator plans promise to change everything.

Volkswagen Relocates Headquarters to Mexico City By JOHN SLOETERDIJK

Speaking from a press conference in Oaxaca, Volkswagen CEO Cesar Gutierrez announced the relocation of the company’s headquarters to a business park outside of Mexico City. He cited the increasing cost of operation in Europe, building expenses, and important business partners as reasons for this relocation. Experts in the European car industry are not suriprsed by this move as it only officially marks the company’s stake in the region.

Schiphol Business Park Planned to House Tourists, Offices, Goods By ADAM RUSSELL

To provide space for the massive flux of goods and people that will be moving through the space elevator terminal, a massive business park is being developed south of the elevator secured area. An estimated 10 square km will be developed Vo l k for this purpose. The area is now wagen mostly farmland on the state has opborder with Utrecht. erated A master plan of this area plants in has been developed by DGTSG, Mexico since the early 1980s in order to reduce costs and reach a young but well-experienced new markets. The company now has forty-two factories in Mexico, Guatemala, Thailand, India, China, and Vietnam. (continued on 4)

Population Aging Continues as Predicted

Dutch urbanism firm based in Rotterdam. The current model suggests over 10 million tourists will spend at least one night in a hotel here before or after their journey into space. In addition, hundreds of businesses will require space for retail, offices, By SANDRA LOPEZ manufacturing, and storage, EU residents are not both to serve the tourist masses and to independently organize pleased to hear the most recent census report that again displays goods to ship to space. the population trends towards lower population, older median age, and increased presence of immigrant communities. According to the EU, the average age of a European is 51.2 years old. Compared to other averages from around the world (USA: 35.1, China: 24.5, India: 17.9), this makes the population seem ancient and irrelevant in modern society. Total population fell in all countries except Greece and other eastern European countries which saw minimal increases due to immigration as a result of climate change. The Netherlands, for example, The President Mourns: American President Olayah at the grave of an Iraq vetonly has 10 million people and eran during ceremonies marking the 20th anniversary of America’s exit from Iraq. its density has dropped further

In a press conference in Leiden at an NS research facility, NS leader Jacques Bataille revealed the final designs for the space elevator already under construction south of Amsterdam. “Europe has faded from the global spotlight and is now seen as outdated and old,” remarked Bataille in a remarkably radical and metaphorically charged speech. “This project promises to establish Europe again as a center for global trade, tourism, and science.” In drawings, renderings, and animations from architecture firm Yang + Murphy (based in Boston and Shanghai) the slender set of carbon nanotube cables stretches 35,000 kilometers into the sky, anchored in a massive counterweight the size of Belgium. Material for the counterweight comes from the belt of space junk that is already orbiting the planet so no energy will be used to move material into space. Construction of this hunk of trash has been underway in secret for the past three years. Orbits occur at periodic intervals along the cable, used for emergency stops, hotels, ultra-expensive luxury apartments, industrial use, and science labs. The space elevator will be constructed on polders east of Schiphol and will provide convenient access to space for tourism, business, and scientific research. A wide array of interests and activities will be satisfied with this project. Rockets to move satellites into space became obsolete in 2025 when fuel prices because unbearably high, severely cutting into improvements in the wireless network that covers the planet. Scientists are excited about the potential of harvesting solar energy in space, an application that will be quickly developed once the elevator begins making trips in 2046. Tourism is also an important topic. Since the New Mexico Spaceport, built by Virgin Intergalactic, opened in 2012, leisure flights to space are now a commonplace activity. Over 20 space stations are in various orbits around the planet, providing an estimated 20 million passengers with galactic experiences every year. The space elevator will make connections to these facilities easy with its 10-hour regular journey or 6-hour accelerated trip (only for individuals with strong stomachs and between the ages of 16 and 40). The effects of this historic project remain to be seen when it becomes operational, but they will doubtlessly restate Europe’s importance as a leader in the modern world.

Space Elevator Promises Economic Boom

Carbon Nanotube Cables to Be Produced at Dutch Facility By PAULA TAYLOR

Benzolyne has announced that its manufacturing plant outside of Dordrecht will be the main site for carbon nanotube cable production. This is not a surprised considering the company’s heavy campaigning for the comission and the imporant work done on the topic at the nearby Technical University of Delft. Carbon nanotubes are a contemporary marvel. Their tensile strength is far greater than any currently known material, however the production process is considerably more intricate. As-

New Study Supports Cost Effective Space Solar Arrays By WILLIAM MAAS

In the most recent issue of Nature, a study by L. Subramanian and James McCoy provides a realistic model for harnessing solar energy in space. The paper provides tested results about efficient geometries and transmission methods back to Earth. The current energy economy is in a state of crisis, a situation wellknown since oil prices began increasing heavily around 2025. Wind

farms are now booming but cannot meet demands in all parts of the world. Solar energy on earth has largely been abandoned due to the toxic chemicals involved and low efficiencies. Nuclear power is one topic that holds the most promise for terrestrial power but it remains a stigmatized topic in public debate because of the radioactive waste and scale of potential problems. Space solar is attractive because all of the infrastructure is far away but in an area where the sun’s radiation is constant and much stronger than on the earth’s surface. The main problem remains how to transit the energy back to earth without large losses. Cables are not efficient enough and the current technology works using microwaves to transfer the energy back to receivers on earth.

sembly begins first at the molecular level where cylindrical carbon rings are joined . The geometry at this scale is the key to the material’s strength. Once a microscopic strand is complete, thousands are woven together in a sequence generated by a computer algorithm. After this step, the result is only the size of a human hair. The process is repeated until the cables grow to almost one meter in diameter. The space elevator will use nine meter-thick cables for support. The factory will be working furiously in the coming months to fabricate the almost 500,000 km of cables needed in the project.

Rockets Become Unpractical Due to Fuel Costs By SANRO PERETTI

The space elevator will be the death of rockets. Rockets now are outdated machines, relying on fossil fuels to power their ascent into order. Attempts to find new fuel sources such as hydrogen fuel cells or the use of biodiesel have proven unsuccessful. As oil prices rise above 100 euros per barrel, all rocket trips have been canceled in the past eight months. Previously, as many as twenty rockets a day departed from earth to deliver supplies and people to space stations. Commercial spaceports face bankruptcy unless new sources of income are found. NASA, for example, has been trying to cut costs by reducing the weight of its space shuttles. It now longer carries as much equipment, fresh water, and computer systems. Radios are not included for the enjoyment of astronauts. Only vegetarian meals are served. This has helped to reduce the cost per flight by 11% but this still not enough to make flights economical. While rockets remain grounded, the space elevator is the next hope for galactic flight.

The Space Elevator Center is located 1km away from Schipol Airport, which is connected by a free automatic pedestrian deck.

Space Tourism, Already a Booming Industry, Set to Grow Over 100 Million Astronauts Per Year, and Counting By JOSIAH OWINAKA

Space tourism is the tourism of the future. Tourism is a huge industry, accounting for almost 30% of the global GDP in recent years. It has even increased despite escalated environmental problems; most experts attribute this to theory that people are trying to “go while they still can” to see exotic parts of the world. Tourism into orbit is a not a necessarily new concept or business model. In the early 2000s, an American singer trained and participated in a Russian space mission. Private

New Exhibit at the Kunsthal Protests the Domestication of Space By HENRY LAO

Opening on July 24, Rotterdam’s premiere museum showcases a series of pieces that explore our cultural relationship to outer space. Artists of multiple generations were invited to create new works specifically for this exhibition in response to the construction of the first space elevator. Most of the work is highly critical, arguing that an even heavier increased human presence in space ruins its symbolic value as the final wilderness left on earth. Filling a whole room, Anselm Kiefer’s Stars the Size of Golden Pollen scatters

aircrafts with the ability for high atmosphere or even outer space altitudes were developed rapidly as a industry feeding off of the military interests in developed countries. In 2012, the first private spaceport opening in the New Mexican desert, designed by Foster + Partners and financed by Virgin CEO Richard Branson. This departure point provided exclusive access to Virgin Intergalactic and was wildly successful when it began offering flights into zero gravity environments. Numerous other companies quickly began offering weightless excursions but none ventured deep into space. The international space station, a research center set

on geosynchronous orbit, was fully operational in 2019, setting the stage again for private development of space stations. As nations struggled to work out the legality of these endeavors, space as a final frontier was wildly exploited. The first private space station hotel opened in 2024, and though the fees were extremely high, it was still booked solid for its first four years of operation. Within three years another four space stations had opening and currently there are 24 privatelyoperated facilities floating in orbit. More are planned for installation after the space elevator opens within the next decade.

pollen gathered from the artist’s home onto large canvases thick with blackness. It proves to be a powerful evocation of our mystic attraction to the heavens. In another room, a younger Chinese artist challenges our perception of space as foreign territory. Lao Shan Yi, 27, provides an installation with familiar objects mysteriously floating in a dark ether. Tamburas drone idly and a scrawl on the wall reminds that we are all made of star dust. This exhibit will remain at the Kunsthal until October 2. Afterwards it will be traveling to the Tate Postmodern in London, the New New Museum in New York City, and the Beijing Contemporary Arts Center. It is expected that almost 500 million viewers will see the work during its tour, resparking an important debate about the symbolic meaning of our world.

Amsterdam New Wave of Immigrants Residents Already in Holland to Work on About Space Elevator Construction Complain Shadow

The First Spaceport: The New Mexico Spaceport, now 35 years old, was the first example of private companies offering flights to gravity-free altitudes. Later the business grew to include flights further into space and to luxury space station hotels.

While construction progresses on the foundations for the space elevator, construction has also begun for the apartment blocks to house the workers who will build this world wonder. An estimated 200,000 workers are swarming into the Netherlands to find work in the construction process of this massive project. In addition to the terminals, workers are building the hotels, business parks, and office space that will be used during when the project is in business. Guggenheim Opens a Branch at the Galactic Hilton Space Resort By ERIKA O’KEEFE

Visible from Paris The view of the Eiffel Tower on a clear day is now changed forever as the space elevator is barely visible on the horizon.

The latest branch of the Guggenheim will become the first major art museum in space. Opening in 2014 and designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the gallery will be hosted inside the Galactic Hilton Space Resort, a vast luxury complex in geosynchronous orbit above the Caribbean Sea. The museum will house large works from the permanent collection and commissioned work crafted to specifically be experienced in space. Already the museum has announced that important works by Jeff Koons and Damian Hirst will be among the first to be exhibited in space. There are no plans to install a recently acquired Richard Serra work, however, as it is too heavy to transport into orbit. “I think the museum will become a great asset for the Galactic Hilton,” commented operational manager Richard Haskins. “It will provide yet another attraction for visits who want to relax in style at our space station facilities.”
