YouthSpotlight:

Samantha Chiodo For this month's Youth Spotlight, I had the opportunity to interview Michigan’s own World Champion, Samantha Chiodo. Sam is currently a sophomore at the University of South Carolina, here’s what she had to say:

How did you get involved with horses? I started riding when I was really young; my mom took me for lessons with her previous coach, Mary Kay Smith. What is your favorite event to show? My favorite class is Showmanship. I love that you can make it so personal. Everyone in the class has a different style and can make a pattern look unique. What was your favorite experience as a youth? My favorite experience as a youth was winning the Showmanship at the Ford Youth World this year. What were you feeling as the results were being announced in showmanship at the world show this year? The feelings I felt are something I can’t even explain. It was literally a dream come true. After seven years of coming to the youth world and not being able to make it to the finals, there were feelings in that arena I had never felt before. All the tears, hard work, and dedication finally paid off as they read off 10th.- 9th.- 8th... and so on. I will never forget how it felt to stand in that arena, just my horse and I. How do you like the format of NCEA riding? I really like the format of College Equestrian. It is solely based on how well you can ride. When I came in, I didn't know what to expect and only having four minutes to ride a horse you have never been on and having to go show it really scared me. But, after my first competition I fell in love with it. The main difference between collegiate riding and showing in AQHA is the team aspect. Before, other than the team tournament at the Congress, I had only competed as an individual. Now I have 39 other girls and 3 coaches to compete for and I couldn't be happier doing so. What are your plans after you graduate? My dream job would be to follow in my dad’s footsteps working as a financial advisor. However, I am a Finance major with a minor in Media Arts so I am keeping my options open. I am also designing ads and I plan on continuing to do that on the side. As far as horses are concerned, I hope to run for Michigan Queen when I graduate so you will see me around the Michigan shows! Thank you, Sam, for catching up with us and good luck in all your future adventures! ~ Aubrey Videtich www.MIQuarterHorse.com

BoardMinutes MICHIGAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION Meeting of the Board of Directors - August 14, 2012 Vice President Karen Waite called a conference call meeting of the MQHA Board of Directors to order at 7:03 p.m. The following Directors and staff were present on the call: Kim Chiodo, Kathy Christensen, Wendy Cook, Megan Hirschman, Jacque Moody, George McCrumb, Monty Montgomery, Tom Powers, Jody Prime, Mary Robertson, Karen Waite and Kris Woroniecki. Excused were Ivy Allen, Cindy Austin, Charlie Closser, Warren English, Mackenzie Kastl, Julie Leek, Ted Meyer, Trish Steele, Morgan Warda and Tiffany Weitzel. Also on the call was National Director, Kelly Chapman. AGENDA: Mary Robertson made a motion to approve the agenda as presented. George McCrumb seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. MINUTES: Kathy Christensen made a motion to accept the May 15, 2012 Board of Directors minutes. Megan Hirschman seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. REVIEW OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS: Kris Woroniecki presented the financial statement for the period ending May 2012. The total assets of the Association as of May 31, 2012 are listed at $299,362.78; the total liabilities at $154,534.90, and the total members' equity is listed at $144,827.88. The net income as of the end of May is listed at $59,281.15 compared to $18,356.84 for the same period in 2011. Kris explained that the income number is overstated mainly due to timing issues. George McCrumb made a motion to approve the May, 2012 financial statement. Monty Montgomery seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kris Woroniecki presented the financial statement for the period ending June 2012. The total assets of the Association as of June 30, 2012 are listed at $287,883.28; the total liabilities at $156,015.86, and the total members' equity is listed at $131,867.42. The net income as of the end of June is listed at $46,320.69 compared to $17,167.23 for the same period in 2011. Kathy Christensen made a motion to approve the June, 2012 financial statement. Megan Hirschman seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. TREASURER'S REPORT: The check detail reports for May and June for the general and special event checking accounts was presented to the Board by Kris Woroniecki. After review Megan Hirschman made a motion to accept the report as presented. Kathy Christensen seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kris then presented the accounts payable and receivable reports. Kristie explained that there are no concerns at this time for the accounts over 30 days on the receivables. The account payables were reviewed. Mary Robertson made a motion to accept the report and Jacque Moody seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. PRESIDENT'S REPORT: none VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Karen Waite began by mentioning that summer has gone very fast but at this point it has been a very successful year for MQHA. She commended the Board and the office for things running so well. She attended the AQHA Regional Championship show in Columbus. There were over 1900 entries at the show with many exhibitors from Michigan. The newly crowned MQHA Queen, Meghan Murphy did a terrific job representing MQ. Megan Murphy will also attend the State 4-H Horse Show in Lansing. OFFICE REPORT: Kris explained to the Board that she has received correspondence from AQHA regarding an

www.MIQuarterHorse.com

increase in show sanction fees beginning in 2013. The new fee structure will take MQHA's liability from $2850 in 2012 to $7450, which is an increase of $4600. There was considerable discussion about this and the hardship it will put on both the Association and the exhibitors. Megan Hirschman made a motion to send a letter to AQHA expressing our concerns and outlining the impact the increase will have to the Michigan shows and the exhibitors. Mary Robertson seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Megan and Kris will get the letter drafted and Kelly Chapman has agreed to review it. Kelly added that the first priority should be to generate the letter and the second priority would be to reach out to other Affiliates. Kelly made the point that MQHA handles the majority of the shows for Michigan, but other states likely have many more show managements than we do, so the overall impact might not be as apparent to them. Kris will also notify the show managements of the Michigan shows that are not managed by MQHA and let them know about this and encourage them to write also. COMMITTEE REPORTS CONVENTION: Kris explained that Tiffany Weitzel reported via email that the contract for the University Quality Inn in Lansing had been returned. The Convention dates are January 12 & 13. She has also booked the same caterer for the event. Kris reminded everyone to work on getting their reservations early due to limited space. FINANCE: Warren English reported via email. Sorry I missed the meeting, I'm on vacation. The financial report will be for the June financial statement. I will give a July and August report at the September meeting. The numbers are very good, better than any year that I have been on the board! I think that this is a direct reflection on the work that Kris is doing and continues to do. The Balance sheet is up by the amount of the net income and the net is a little over $46,000 year to date. The $6900.00 in code 703 is contracted expenses for the journal. I do have some issues with the fundraising accounts both income and expense. I have talked at length with Kris on these and I'm going to ask that we have a discussion on fundraising in new business for our September meeting. While there are no Earth shattering problems, I do believe that we need a direction from the Board regarding how fundraising is done at all levels, and how it needs to be reported for the financial statements, so that the people who are running the individual shows and the youth are all on the same page. Other than that, I know a few hundred people who would love to have this YTD P&L. I would also like to suggest that we have a discussion in September on the addition of a marketing person. My discussions with Kris has lead me to believe that we may not be able to physically increase these shows as our venues do not have the capacity, and an additional person may be helpful, but not if their only job is to get more stalls sold that we don't have!! FUTURITY: Jacque Moody spoke and stressed to board members that the Futurity is in need of sponsors. Please ask people. If we don't ask, we won't get them. There are three options available: $25 class sponsor, $100 buckle sponsor and $300 banner sponsors. Jacque asked every Director to try to get just five. All other aspects of the show are falling in to place. The awards are taken care of. Everything is in good shape right now. HALL OF FAME: Mary Robertson reported that the MQHA office has been working with a local jeweler to change the Hall of Fame pins to reflect the new MQHA design. Mary requested ideas for inductees. There have been a few suggestions to date. Mary asked that the Board provide any input on potential candidates and encourage nominations from the membership. The office will work on digging up past articles that might be reprinted in the

Journal. Karen will get with Ken Mumy and see what historical information he might have. HARBOR CLASSIC: The 2012 Harbor Classic profit and loss statement was shared with the Board. The show was up almost 1200 entries, 29 campers and 119 stalls from 2011. The overall profit was up around $7000, but Kris reminded the Board that there were huge expenses incurred with the portable stalls and tent. The party expense was up considerably as was the awards expense. Overall, the show was very successful and many people had a great time and were very complimentary of the show. HARVEST CLASSIC: Kim Chiodo repor ted that everything is coming along well for the horseshow. The awards are ordered and she has decided to give money for the high points. The show is on a completely different date, so it will be a wait and see as to how well it is attended. MHC: Karen Waite reported that the MHC doesn't meet in the summer, so there are no updates. NOMINATIONS: Kris emailed a list to the Directors showing the length of terms for the current Board. There will be a total of 11 spots to fill for 2013. Two will be filled with the National Directors with the Constitutional change approved at the 2012 Annual Membership Meeting, leaving nine open spots. She asked that the Directors let her know if they will be re-running in the upcoming election. NOVICE SHOW: Kris discussed the All Novice Shows that were held in Greenville the end of July. The shows were held in conjunction with Lope For Hope and were made possible with grant money through AQHA and MBNA. The people who attended thought the location had a lot of potential. There was discussion regarding the money that was profit from the horse show. Wendy Cook made a motion to table the discussion until the September meeting to give the MQHA office a chance to get proof of the non-profit status. Megan Hirschman seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. QUEEN: Kathy Christensen reported that four beautiful young ladies ran for Queen: Sarah Breuker, Allyson Hill, Mackenzie Kastl and Megan Murphy. Megan was crowned during the Harbor Classic and is the new 2012 MQHA Queen. Kathy stated that the Congress entry for Megan is completed. Cassidy's Casuals has been kind enough to help provide outfits for queen as well as provide a photo shoot. Kathy should have pictures soon. SUMMER SERIES: The Summer Series profit and loss was shared with the Board. The show was moved to Allegan this year after being in Berrien Springs. The dates that MQHA wanted for the show were not available, so the show was moved back to Memorial Weekend. Those in attendance at the show seemed to have a good time. The show went well. The overall profit and loss is showing a loss of about $300 to date for the event. YOUTH: Wendy Cook reported that she made it through first Youth World show. Michigan had a phenomenal show. The kids did a fantastic job. Michigan was well represented in everything. They did end up third in the scrapbook contest. The new format for this contest is changing over to a digital format, so Wendy asked the Board what should be done with the existing scrapbook. It was determined that the scrapbook should reside in the MQHA office. There were thoughts about bringing it to the Convention or to certain shows. There was not a decision made on where it would be taken. The Youth Association had 25 horses go to the World Show with 20 kids representing. Of those, fourteen kids participated in fundraising and raised over $12,000. Wendy explained that she did the fundraising a little different this year and five of the kids earned enough to.....

BoardMinutes Meeting of the Board of Directors - Aug 14, 2012, cont. to get a “free ride” meaning that they earned enough to cover their World Show entries. The core of the group benefited from fundraising efforts and Wendy feels adamant about fundraising for the kids. She wants them to be able to go to the shows and many of them realistically cannot afford the World Show and other outof-state shows. There was considerable discussion about the fundraising and what the rules are. Kristie and Megan Hirschman will check on the legal issues with regard to our non-profit status. Wendy Cook made a motion that the MQHA Board go through whatever avenues necessary for clarification on rules prohibiting MQHA from certain types of fundraising efforts. George McCrumb seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Wendy also added that Western Accents did a great job with the World team t-shirts. They included the names of the sponsors on the shirts. OLD BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: None A motion to adjourn was made at 8:55 p.m. by unanimous consent without objection. ELECTRONIC BOARD CORRESPONDENCE: MQHA rules now allow for electronic voting when necessary. Any information voted on electronically between meetings will be recorded on the next set of minutes in this section: The next meeting will be Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at 7:00 at the MSU Pavilion, Classroom A. MICHIGAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION Meeting of the Board of Directors, September 25, 2012 President Trish Steele called a meeting of the MQHA Board of Directors to order at 7:05 p.m. at the MSU Pavilion in East Lansing, Michigan. The following Directors and staff were present: Cindy Austin, Kim Chiodo, Kathy Christensen, Charlie Closser, Warren English, Megan Hirschman, George McCrumb, Ted Meyer, Monty Montgomery, Jacque Moody, Tom Powers, Trish Steele, Karen Waite, Morgan Warda, Tiffany Weitzel and Kris Woroniecki. National Directors Chris Baldwin and Kelly Chapman were also in attendance. Excused from the meeting were Ivy Allen, MacKenzie Kastl, Julie Leek, Jody Prime and Mary Robertson. Unexcused was Wendy Cook. AGENDA: Megan Hirschman made a motion to approve the agenda with the AQHA Show Approval Letter and the MHC Show Survey added to Old Business and Board Member Responsibilities added to New Business. Tiffany Weitzel seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. MINUTES: Kim Chiodo made a motion to accept the August 14, 2012 Board of Directors minutes with a correction to Megan Murphy's name. Kathy Christensen seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. REVIEW OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS: Warren English presented the financial statement for the period ending July 2012. The total assets of the Association as of July 31, 2012 are listed at $295,969.86; the total liabilities at $155,736.16, and the total members' equity is listed at $140,233.70. The net income as of the end of July is listed at $57,298.15 compared to $34,859.55 for the same period in 2011. Megan Hirschman made a motion to approve the July, 2012 financial statement. Kim Chiodo seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Warren English presented the financial statement for the period ending August 2012. The total assets of the Association as of August 31, 2012 are listed at

www.MIQuarterHorse.com

$302,610.23; the total liabilities at $158,258.56, and the total members' equity is listed at $144,351.67. The net income as of the end of August is listed at $61,416.12 compared to $35,781.18 for the same period in 2011. Megan Hirschman made a motion to approve the August, 2012 financial statement. Kim Chiodo seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Warren English explained that there were a few things to note on the profit and loss for January through August. There are no trail course fees being charged this year at the horse shows. The Youth World Team income is reflected differently because of the way the team was financed. There was a lot of income under the sponsors and donations for the youth, which ultimately went to pay Youth World Team expenses. The payroll is consistent with what it should be. The accounting expense includes the 2011 Year End Review and it was paid in a different month than last year. Warren did explain that he is concerned about a couple of things he wanted to have the Directors made aware of. The Association has given discounts to MQHA members of almost $5000 to date. The Board needs to determine if this will continue to be offered. The MasterCard and Visa bank service charge is almost $5000 to date. Warren stated that the Board should determine if charging more for credit card use is an option. Overall, the profit and loss looks really good right now and the Board should be happy with the numbers. TREASURER'S REPORT: The check detail report for July for the general and special event checking accounts was presented to the Board by Kris Woroniecki. After review Warren English made a motion to accept the report as presented. Megan Hirschman seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. The check detail report for August for the general checking account was presented to the Board by Kris Woroniecki. After review Jacque Moody made a motion to accept the report as presented. Monty Montgomery seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. Kris then presented the accounts payable and receivable reports. The account payables were reviewed. Kathy Christensen made a motion to accept the report and Jacque Moody seconded the motion. Motion passed with none opposed. PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Trish Steele stated that she was glad to see everyone at the meeting and that she was looking forward to the discussion regarding the Board Member responsibilities. She thanked everyone for all they have done by demonstrating commitment to the Board. VICE PRESIDENT'S REPORT: Vice President Waite reported that Megan Murphy did attend the State 4-H Horse Show and that she did a very nice job. Karen congratulated the Committee on the success of the Michigan Quarter Horse Association Breeders' Futurity and wished the Harvest Classic committee the best of luck on the upcoming show. Karen stated that it appeared as though the show would be successful even with the change of dates. COMMITTEE REPORTS AWARDS: Monty Montgomery stated that the 2011 Year End Awards committee spent $16,182 plus $3400 from the Amateur classification, for a total of $19,582. Monty would like to increase the operating budget from $16,000 to $18,500. He would also like to be able to roll any unspent money into the following year. He explained that 33% of the Easter Amateur show profits are added to the Year End Awards budget. He is concerned that if the Easter show doesn't do as well, that there is still money available for the awards. Monty made a motion to increase the operating budget from $16,000 to $18,500 with any unspent balance to be put aside in an accrued

account for future use. Tom Powers seconded it. Motion passed with none opposed. CONVENTION: Tiffany Weitzel explained that the Committee will host a new event during Convention. She was approached by Dian Main and was asked about having a “her generation” get together. Dr. Ken and Dian will sponsor a breakfast and Dian will work with Tiffany to get invitations out. Tiffany reminded everyone that the Convention dates are January 12 & 13 and it will be held at the University Quality Inn in Lansing again this year. Kathy Christensen suggested hiring a band to play for Saturday night and requested feedback on the idea. Tiffany asked if anyone could help bake cakes for the dinner. FUTURITY: Jacque Moody indicated that she had a very preliminary report on the show. There were two fewer stalls, 14 more campers and the entries went from 1992 to 2230. There was $3150 in revenue from the trainer sale this year that wasn't there last year. There is also over $5000 in sponsor income compared to $1600 from 2011. FUNDRAISING: Megan Hirschman stated that she feels as though the Leave A Legacy brochure has been helpful for fundraising tool. She asked for input from the Board. HALL OF FAME: Kris explained that she has received the new Hall of Fame pin prototype from the jeweler. She passed the pin around and requested comments from the Board. A suggestion was made to include a loop on the back of the pin so that it could be used on a chain if desired. Kris explained that MQHA member, John Dailey donate his collection of MQHA journals dating back to virtually the beginning of the Journal. Kathy Christensen took them home and has separated them, determined what issues were missing and has put them in watertight containers. She is working on going through them and marking items of interest. She would like to make suggestions to the Journal Editor for items to put in the journal when there is space. HARVEST CLASSIC: Kim Chiodo stated that the Harvest Classic show will happen in a few days. The Committee is still in need of help scribing on Saturday and Sunday. The stall sales look very good. The Committee was unsure how the attendance would be with the new dates and new format. Kim has had a good response for sponsors for the show. JOURNAL/WEBSITE: Kris Woroniecki mentioned that the transition is completed between the old and new Journal editors for the website. Everything for both the journal and the website now needs to go through Cindy at C & C Publishing. MEMBERSHIP: Kathy Christensen stated that the West Michigan Winter HorseFest will be held again at the Delta Plex in Grand Rapids, on December 15. She is interested in doing it again. There was minimal cost last year. She will look over the information now that it is out and come back to the Board with a recommendation on this expo. NOMINATIONS: Kris Woroniecki reviewed the list of Directors whose terms are up in 2013. She asked if any of them were going to run again and reminded everyone to get the word out that the ballot is being put together for the election. QUEEN: Kathy Christensen reported that Megan Murphy was doing a phenomenal job. BoardMinutes Meeting of the Board of Directors, Sept 25, 2012, cont. stallions started. YOUTH: Morgan McCarthy Warda said that the Youth were focused on the NYATT Team competition coming up. The youth raised $817 with a “pie in the face” contest held during the Futurity. They would like to hold a leadless showmanship class during the Harvest Classic. They will get with the Harvest Classic show committee about finalizing details. OLD BUSINESS: Marketing Position – Warren English explained that he wanted direction from the board with regard to improving upon some areas with additional hired help. There has been discussion about increasing revenue by increasing number of exhibitors through better marketing, including social media. The point was raised that the shows in Michigan do not have a lot of opportunity to really expand due to the limits of the venues. Michigan State does not have a warm up area, so if the shows get too big there, there will be no place to work horses. Ludington has the ability to hold some more stalls, but there would be a need for tents which make the cost prohibitive except for the longer circuits. No further action will be taken at this time. MHC Show Survey Results – Karen Waite stated that she and Tiffany Weitzel worked on the Show Survey results. The survey was designed to include all breeds and there were 420 respondents. 235 were AQHA exhibitors. For those who had left showing, the primary reason was cost or financial issues. Competition and a high level of competition is what they expect from MQHA shows. It is also important that there are friendly, nice people wherever they show.

AQHA letter – The letter to AQHA that Megan Hirschman helped to write regarding the huge increase in the AQHA approval fees for 2013 was presented to the Board. The Board reviewed it and approved it with the addition of the Directors signatures. The letter will go out to AQHA in the next week. NEW BUSINESS: Fundraising – Warren reminded the Board that if any of the committees would like to do fundraising, the projects need to come to the Board for approval first. Youth advisor – President Steele addressed the Board with information on the Youth Advisor position. She indicated that the Directors all received an email with the update on the Youth Advisor resignation. President Steele updated the Directors with regard to the NYATT team. Warren English is working with Nicole Veldhoff, who has graciously volunteered to help the NYATT team this year. Warren mentioned that he would be hosting a conference call with all involved within a few days. Warren reiterated that the MQHA Annual meeting will need to have the new youth advisor in place and ready to go. Warren also stated that he is actively looking for members for the Youth Advisor Committee. There are several adults who have expressed an interest. He is still working on filling the Youth ballot for the new Youth board. Board Member Responsibility – Kathy Christensen explained that she and several other Board members have met and compiled suggestions for an update to the Board Member Responsibility letter. She stated that some of the Directors feel as though the expectations of the Directors should be laid out more clearly prior to someone agreeing to take a position. She requested feedback from the Board prior to November 1 so that she can update it and present it again at the November 10 meeting. A motion to adjourn was made at 9:40 p.m. by

unanimous consent without objection. ELECTRONIC BOARD CORRESPONDENCE: MQHA rules now allow for electronic voting when necessary. Any information voted on electronically between meetings will be recorded on the next set of minutes in this section: Due to the resignation of MQHA's Youth Advisor, Wendy Cook, the MQHA Board will need to appoint a new Youth Advisor to commence NYATT and other youth activities that are upon us. We will be conducting an electronic vote for the following motion that has been made by Karen Waite. The motion is to appoint Warren English to the new Youth Advisor position effective immediately. The motion has been moved and seconded by Ted Meyer. The following returned an electronic vote in favor of the motion: Austin, Chiodo, Christensen, English, Hirschman, Kastl, Leek, Meyer, Montgomery, Moody, Prime, Powers, Robertson, Waite, Warda, Weitzel. There were no votes against. Motion passed with majority.

2012 MQHA QUEEN Meghan Murphy Hi everyone! I hope you all are getting excited for the Holidays and for the 2013 show season, I know I am! I cannot believe how quickly this year has gone by! With that being said, I would like to congratulate all of our MQHA members who exhibited at the 2012 All American Quarter Horse Congress. Michigan was well represented, we had many members make the finals, place in the top-15, top-10, and be named Congress Champions. Additionally, congratulations to our amazing youth team that placed 9th overall in the NYATT! While at the Congress, I heard many final placing announcements over the loud speakers. I must say, no matter where I was on the grounds, a big smile came across my face every time an exhibitor was announced as being from Michigan... it is something that never gets old to hear and each time reminded me of how proud I am of our association. It is the incredible membership that our organization has who make me even more proud and honored to wear the sash that says "Michigan QHA." The opportunity to participate in the 2012 Congress Queen's contest was truly an incredible experience and I am honored and blessed to be the 1st runner-up in this year's competition. In the individual categories of the Congress Queen's Contest, I placed 1st in the horsemanship, 2nd in the written test and

7th in the interview. This year was my first time competing in the Congress Queen's Contest and it was unforgettable. The week of the competition felt like it went faster than possible! My favorite part of the experience though was definitely the opportunity to meet so many new horse enthusiasts from all over the country, particularly from Michigan. Throughout the week I met with sponsors of the Congress Queen's Contest and a variety of participants at the Congress. I presented awards in several classes at the Congress and it is hard to describe how special it was to hand an exhibitor their first Congress medallion or the coveted Don Bell Congress bronze. Another highlight of my week was the Congress Queen's Contest Style Show which benefitted Nelly's Catwalk For Kids, a nonprofit organization founded to help raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer families. Clothes from a variety of designers were showcased in the style show by the Congress Queen contestants and several children. In the style show I wore beautiful outfits from Cassidy's Casuals, Kevin Garcia, and Sean Ryon. After the style show, the queen candidates spent several hours at the Queen's Booth in Congress Hall signing autographs, it was one of my favorite events of the week because I was able to meet many young horse enthusiasts many of whom were

from Michigan. Thank you to everyone who came to meet me, it was a highlight of my week, I really enjoyed sharing with you all! I look forward to seeing many of you again at an event in Michigan this upcoming year! This is just a brief highlight of my experience at the 2012 All American Quarter Horse Congress. I would love to share many more details about it with you all this year. I will be attending the MQHA Convention in January as well as a variety of events throughout the year. Please come say hi, and ask me more about my experiences as Queen, I would love to share with you! Best wishes! ~ Meghan Murphy, 2012 MQHA Queen

Meet Your Board of Director Candidates! CHARLIE CLOSSER: Hi, I am Charles Closser and I am a full time farrier and trainer, with my specialties being training and showing the All Around Horse and fitting and showing Halter Horses. I have most recently served as a Michigan Quarter Horse Director as well as a National Director for the American Paint Horse Association. I have also served as a director for the Buckskin Horse Association of Michigan and the Michigan State Pinto Breeders and Owners. I have had many different responsibilities while serving in these associations. Most recently, I have been on several MQHA Committees, including the All Novice Show in Greenville, the Hall of Fame Committee and the SSS Committee. I have worked on the Rules Committee for APHA and as a show manager for BHAM. I am a member of numerous equine associations and I realize how important it is to have a Board of Directors that listens to its membership. If reelected to the MQHA Board, I would like to continue to help the Association reach the goals we have set for our future. TAYLOR (TENLEN) FABUS: Taylor (Tenlen) Fabus grew up in midMichigan and spent her youth years showing all-around events on the MQHA circuit. During her youth career she held many officer positions including President of MQHYA for 2 years. During a hiatus from the show ring, Taylor earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Animal Science at Michigan State University where she is now a faculty member. Taylor purchased her current equine friend, Ozzie, in 2009 and has since shown lightly on MQHA's circuit. She plans to increase her involvement with MQHA and one way she hopes to do that is through being a board member. She feels that her involvement in MQHA and AQHA as a youth provided many leadership and educational opportunities and she would like to continue those great opportunities for MQHA members. PATTIE HALL: Hi, my name is Pattie Hall and I am 56 years old. I am a divorced mother of three wonderful sons, aged 30, 26 and 25. I have been involved with horses since I was 9 years old. I did anything and everything I could to be around them! I started riding hunter/jumpers at the age of 20, and showed the MHJA circuit. I stopped riding at age 27 because of the divorce. I started back into the horse world when my youngest son was 12 years old and he wanted to take riding lessons. As I knew would happen, I jumped back in with both feet and no life preserver! We took part in 4-H and had a wonderful time, but my son wanted more so he started showing AQHA with his wonderful mare, Mandy First Step. He graduated high school, went away to college and then it was my turn! I became involved in MQHA when I bought my halter horse, Ben (CW Cowboy), and started showing in Halter and Showmanship. I really enjoyed the MQ shows and people and had fun, but I wanted to ride and Ben just never got the hang of that! I found my wonderful mare Gracie (Chip's White Delite) and enjoyed 2 wonderful summers showing MQ in Showmanship and Horsemanship with her. I now have a new mare, Sexy (Suddenly Sexy) and we will be showing again at the MQ shows and I know we will have a great time! MQHA is a good organization with good people and I have decided I would like a more active part. I like the direction MQ has gone and feel that we should continue to work hard at keeping the shows high quality and making them affordable for everyone. www.MIQuarterHorse.com

TED MEYER: My name is Ted Meyer, I live in Cadillac and I have been on the MQ board since 2006. I have served on several committees. The most recent committees that I have been on consist of the Harbor Classic, Show Approval and Futurity. The last three years I have been the Chair of the Harbor Classic and I have been in charge of putting on the exhibitors' party at the Harbor Classic. At the Stallion Service Sale you have probably seen me behind the popcorn machine making popcorn for the bidders. At the Great Lakes Classic maybe you have enjoyed a cup of coffee, donut or popcorn that I have made sure was available for you. I have also been in charge of the exhibitors' party and judges' meals at the Great Lakes Classic. Hopefully, you were also able to find time to enjoy the exhibitors' party at the Great Lakes Classic in spite of your hectic show schedule. As you can see, I am an active board member and I am willing to do whatever I can to make MQ a successful association. I enjoy being a MQ board member and I do not take my responsibilities lightly. If I am re-elected for another term on the MQ board I will continue to help strive to make MQ the best association that it can be.

BOB MILKS: Bob Milks has been a resident of Alma, MI, since 2007, having settled there after moving from Canada where he was raised and involved with horses for more years than he will admit. He has shown on open circuits as well as the OQHA circuit in Ontario and crossing the border to show Palomino. Having been heavily involved with the local clubs, he also served a term with MQHA and would like to help the already well-qualified board members of MQHA move the association forward. He is a lifetime member of AQHA, MQHA, PHBA and the APHA and in his spare time, he judges horse shows and likes to see the youth grow and learn in the equine industry. MONTY MONTGOMERY: Hi, I am Monty Montgomery. My wife Stacy and I reside in Homer, MI. As a member of the Board of Directors for the last 4 years, I have served on the Convention Committee and served as Chairperson of both the Year End Awards Committee and the Easter Eggstravaganza Show Committee. My aim for MQHA and these committee projects is to keep them moving forward for all of our MQHA members in this ever-changing industry. I would like to continue the focus for these existing projects and all future projects for MQHA.

JACQUE MOODY: I'm Jacque Moody and I've been a member of the MQHA Board for 8 years during which time I've served three years as Chair of the Finance Committee; two years as Co-Chair with Jen Goss on the Harbor Classic; and for the last three years have chaired the Futurity/Great Lakes show which has become my #1 project – I'd like to continue to develop that as Michigan's premier show of the year. My family and I have shown horses as members of MQHA for over 35 years and we continue to enjoy the many friends we have made.

MIKE SINKO: I'm Mike Sinko. I train, show, judge, and give lessons out of Sinko's Quarter Horse Farm located just west of Alma. I teach for the Gratiot Isabella RESD, along with being a Certified Drivers Education Teacher. I have served on the board in the past and look forward to serving again. Director Candidates, cont. CHRIS PERNICIARO: Hi, I'm Chris Perniciaro and I live in Leslie, Michigan. I have worked at Ford Motor Company for the past 20 years. I have been a member of MQHA since I was a youth and have grown up showing with the association. I am currently showing halter horses in the Amateur and Open classes, but soon hope to get back to riding Western Pleasure.

Anna Bays Traveling Memorial Trophy Champion Bob Sherman & Sheza Gunslingin Kid

I would love a position on the board of directors so that I can be involved in an association that has such a great membership.

NICOLE VELDHOFF: Hi, I am Nicole Veldhoff and my husband Mark and I have just recently moved to a new farm in Kalamazoo. I have shown horses since I was I child, starting with 4-H and open shows and then moving on to showing the AQHA circuit. After my youth career, I worked with some well known professional horse trainers for about 8 years. I decided to start my own business and now own NBV Performance Horses. My passion is the youth and the amateur exhibitors. I truly enjoy spending time with my customers and helping them reach their goals. I am hoping that my past experiences mixed with my desire to learn and to help will be an asset to the MQHA. I was fortunate enough to be able to help the MQHYA this year and enjoyed the experience immensely. If elected, I hope to continue to help the youth as well as the Association attain the goals they have set for the future. DEBBIE WADDS: Hi! I am Debbie Wadds. My life is composed of many different avenues. In the past years, I have owned and operated a very successful floral and gift shop, as well as being 'The Wedding Planner'. Helping brides dreams to come true...Gordy and I had our dreams come true with our 'Western Wedding' at our beautiful Ranch in Ovid, MI, 2 years ago. Since then we have extended our existing business, Gord Wadds Show Horses, and the Equine Appraisal Service to include custom wedding planning and floral designing services. You can go to our site www.gordwadds.com to learn more about our business. We enjoy starting our day with God and living our lives doing what we love! I am prepared to offer my talents of planning, listening, and help managing with other team members, a positive and dynamic attitude and my skills with the MQ Board of Directors. The common thread of my life, no matter when or where, is "Faith - Family Friends - and of course HORSES!” MORGAN WARDA: Hi, my name is Morgan McCarthy Warda. I am a sophomore at the University of Michigan. I have served on the Michigan Quarter Horse Youth Association for the past seven years. As President of the Youth board, I had the opportunity to sit on the MQ Board for two of those years. I have been enlightened by my past experiences and enjoyed my time serving the Youth Association and would like to continue representing MQHA on the 2013 Board of Directors. I firmly believe in order to continue and grow our association, we have to be willing to contribute and participate. If elected I am committed to supporting our members' goals.

Don’t miss your chance to choose your favorite candidates for 2013!

BALLOTS ON THE FOLLOWING PAGES www.MIQuarterHorse.com

The fifteenth presentation of the Anna Bays Memorial Trophy was once again held at the Michigan Quarter Horse Breeders Futurity. I am very honored to make a special presentation on behalf of the many friends of a very special lady. Congratulations go to Bob Sherman as this year’s winner of the Anna Bays Traveling Memorial Trophy. For the first time since the inception of the trophy the “Tie-breaker” rule had to be utilized. The filly tied for 2nd in her class and finished 3rd as Judge “B” was the class tie-breaker. However, the Anna Bays Memorial Trophy rules clearly state that Judge “A” is the tie-breaking judge. Under Judge “A” Sheza Gunslingin Kid was first. As the breeder of this filly by Kid Coolsified out of Gunsling N Annie exhibited by Bob Sherman, the Sherman’s will now be able to enjoy the beautiful bronze trophy that honors the memory of Anna Bays. February 8th, 2013 will mark 15 years since MQHA has lost a lifetime member and active breeder when Anna Bays, 92, died when her home in Traverse City caught fire. Anna loved raising her foals and always dreamed of having a futurity winner. Tom Robertson, Jerry Robertson, Jarra Hilliker and Gary Gleason were all trainers that worked for Anna. She shared in a partnership of the stallion SR Ready Conclusion, an own son of Conclusive. Everyone who ever met Anna can tell you how vibrantly she talked about her babies and the Michigan Breeders Futurity. In an effort to honor her memory many of her friends commissioned sculptor Marrita McMillen of Gainesville, TX to create the bronze trophy which depicts a weanling playfully rearing with a ribbon. The black walnut base has a bronze name plate on the front and individual name plates listing the succession of winners. The trophy is scheduled to travel for twenty years. The winner keeps the actual trophy for one year, and then exchanges it for a commemorative plaque. The award goes to the Michigan breeder whose weanling beats the most horses in his/her halter class in the open division at the MQHBF. Past winners include Ted Lincoln, Phil Cumper, Robert & Terri Wolf, Denise Pucilowski, Lorraine Barrigar, Diane Hyde, Judy and John Van Dyke, two time winners Michael & Suzanne Cramer and five time winners Steve & Kelli Jensen. This beautiful trophy has always been awarded at the Quarter Horse Convention, but for the last two years, we decided to award it at the Breeder's Futurity where everyone attending could enjoy this beautiful work of art. I can speak for everyone who knew and loved Anna, in saying, that I hope that everyone enjoys this memorial trophy as much as we enjoyed Anna. ~ Sincerely, Joan Williams MQHA Journal • December 2012 • 57
