The man pulled her close to him, so her ear was next to his mouth. “How do you know about my wife?” His voice was a low growl. “The information is coming from my guides. Don’t you think you have more explaining to do than I do?” Carolyn said. He didn’t reply, but forced Carolyn inside again. He dragged her to the door of the den, but at that moment, the sound of a key turning in the front door’s lock reached Carolyn’s ears. The stranger halted and yanked her back into the den. The front door opened, and there were footsteps in the entryway. Her heart in her mouth, Carolyn froze. The man pinioned her to his chest, his arms around her, keeping her still. He pressed the gun to her temple. “Quiet,” he whispered. From below, her daughter’s voice called out, “Mom? Are you here? Hello?”
