Jackson Rancheria is once again offering two of the most popular local holiday traditions, free Holiday Hay Rides and a free Christmas Pageant. The Holiday Hay Rides feature a festive ride around the extraordinarily decorated Rancheria (over one million lights!) followed by a visit with Santa for the kids and refreshments for everyone. It will be held on Sunday, December 14, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the elegantly decorated Grand Oak Ballroom at the Hotel. Cookies and hot cocoa will be served and Santa will visit with the kids.

Stockton mail carrier wins $524K Jackpot James K. of Stockton was planning to retire next March, but a $524,057.68 jackpot at Jackson Rancheria Casino may change his plans. James went to the casino on Monday, November 3, and played for a few hours until he hit the MegaJackpot® on a nickel Wheel of Fortune slot machine just after 2 p.m. He says at first he didn’t realize how big a jackpot he had hit. “When it hit, this big square came up on the screen telling me to call an attendant, but it blocked the rest of the screen and the wheels so I wasn’t sure. I kind of realized what it was, then the big square flashed on and off and I could see the wheels.” “I stayed pretty calm until a crowd of people started gathering around me,” he added. “That’s when the size of the jackpot hit me and I got excited.” James says he’s been going to Jackson Rancheria practically since it was built. “I used to go to Tahoe, but I haven’t been to Tahoe in 20 years.” JACKSON RANCHERIA CASINO & HOTEL

In addition to a lengthy career with as a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier, the 59year-old is also a chess player and serious musician. He’s played French horn with military bands for 34 years with the Air Force and Reserves as well as over 40 seasons with the Stockton Symphony. He had planned to retire from the Post Office and Reserves in March when he turns 60, but says with this jackpot might speed that up some. “I’ll always play music as long as I can,” he added. “No matter how much money I win, I’ll never retire from music.” “Jackson Rancheria Casino has had more MegaJackpot® winners than any other casino in Northern California,” said Mike Pistoia, Director of Marketing and Player Development. “We’re pleased to add James to that long list as yet another example of Rancheria Style™ winners. We’ve paid out more than $20 million on these popular machines and look forward to many more winners.”

For the Cobbs, WINNERS winemaking is a family affair DOLORES Sacramento

EFREN Stockton

ELOISA Stockton

When Buck Cobb started Karly Winery in 1979, he wisely named it after his wife. Buck Cobb is a great name for a fighter pilot (he flew F-86’s during the Korean War), but it’s a lousy name for a winery. Like many in the wine industry, Buck started off in a totally different direction before finding a home among the vineyards. After separating from the Air Force in 1956, he earned an M.S. in Engineering Physics at U.C. Berkeley, then spent 17 years doing nuclear research at Lawrence and Sandia Laboratories, several “think tanks,” and Stanford Research Institute. Buck then constructed computer based forecasts of electricity and fuel needs of California industries for the California Energy Commission. During this time, he moved his family to a picturesque ranch near the town of Plymouth. It was his intention to become a formidable backpacker, fly fisherman, and skier. Then he discovered Amador grapes and winemaking. Unbeknownst to Buck, he had bought property smack in the middle of prime grape-growing country. It started innocently enough as a hobby, but after two years he was planting grapes and starting a winery. His wife Karly gave up a show business career as a big band singer, dancer, and model to become the mother of three sons and homemaker to the Cobb clan. A legendary cook, she is also a sought after interior consultant, avid downhill skier, and superb gardener. Karly’s kitchen is the envy of well equipped restaurants, and she can turn out first class French, Asian, Mexican, and Mediterranean cuisine, or the hearty everyday ranch cooking that is the family favorite. Her bread is an Amador phenomenon. DECEMBER 2008 • THE ARROW

Karly and Buck Cobb Karly’s role on the ranch is to oversee the books, drive trucks and tractors, split wood, and entertain anywhere from four to 400 visiting VIP’s in the barrel room or on the big lawns. Karly Winery was started from scratch, and the Cobbs decided it would benefit their start-up business more for their sons to discover life away from the ranch. So, over the first 15 years Buck and Karly carried the operation while their sons explored life, finished college, and gained business experience. However no enterprise is successful unless it provides for succession. The next generations of Cobbs has decided that the winery business and way of life will continue. And so, new names are appearing in the business, in time retiring Buck to the trout stream and Karly to her garden. Among the “offspring” of Karly Wines is Bantam Cellars. Jonna Cobb explains its beginnings: “I met Garth in the fall of 1982. Our first date was dinner at his apartment. BBQ spareribs, pasta, and the best gosh darn Zinfandel. The label, homemade, Xeroxed, and crooked, said simply Buck’s Zin. It was a big, meaty wine with balance and finesse. I was in love! (…with the wine immediately, with Garth in a matter of months!) The rest, as they say, is history. See COBB FAMILY, page 17

Cobb Family

Continued from page 16 “When Garth started making wine full time at Karly and Pop’s place in the early 90’s, I noticed that he and Pop had a struggle for style. While Garth’s Zinfandels were consistently reminiscent of Buck’s Zin, Pop was experimenting with lower alcohol styles and his Rhone Reds were amazing. “So now Garth is embarking on this new adventure. The name Bantam Cellars was our choice because I raise Bantam hens and a

few roosters -- beautiful chickens with glorious colors. “It’s my goal to bring Amador back to its wine roots with Bantam Cellars -- good country living, chickens in the yard, good friends, good food, fabulous wine and great times with lots of relaxed and friendly hospitality. All this and more await you at Bantam Cellars.” Visit both of these Cobb family wineries at their tasting rooms or online at and They are sure to make you feel welcome.

WINNERS Meet Patricia from our Hotel

$13,677 WILL YOU BE NEXT? YOU Your Town

If you’ve stayed at our Hotel or called here for any reason, you may have met Patricia Analco, one of the friendly front desk and phone center staff who always goes the extra mile to make your visit special. Born and raised in Santa Monica, she attended Santa Monica High School and then worked at St. John’s Hospital there for ten years before getting married. She later handled reservations for a guest ranch. Patricia moved to the Amador area six years ago. At one point she took a year off from working, but got bored so she went looking for interesting work. She applied and got hired at the hotel and has been here now for four years. She handles a variety of duties at the hotel, from the front desk to the switchboard. Her work on the switchboard requires her to know everything that’s going on around Jackson Rancheria and to handle reservations for not only the hotel, but also the RV Park, Lone Wolf’s Steak & Seafood, and various special events. “People are often surprised when they get a real person on the phone,” she notes. Patricia says the best part of her job is the people. “I’ve always worked where I deal with people, helping them. Here I get to talk with a wide variety of people, and get to know those who come often. And the people I work with, we’ve got a fun group here, and we all get along.” When not helping you, she likes to work on her house and read. “And I get the grandchildren several times a year. They love it here.” She has three children and seven grandchildren, with another on the way. Patricia was brought to the attention of The Arrow by a player who responded to our request for information on employees who make your visit special. Jeanne from Antioch wrote “Every time I come to stay, Patricia makes me feel like the queen of Sheba, calls me by my first name and makes sure that my stay is always in the tower rooms. Once when I became quite ill, she went out of her way DECEMBER 2008 • THE ARROW

to get my son from the Poker Room so that he could be with me. I look forward to her attitude and happy smile each time I visit.” “I would also like to mention that your employees are the reason that I come to Jackson rather than going to other casinos.
