ATKINS www.cityyofatkins.com Just a quick 10-minute drive from Cedar Rapids, Atkins is located two miles north of U.S. Highway 30 on Country Road W28 (33rd Avenue). Atkins’ close proximity to Cedar Rapids has brought a population explosion in the last decade, making it Benton County’s fastest growing community. The 2010 census showed 1,670 residents, up from 1,297 in 2000. Atkins was settled in 1881, one of many towns established as the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad expanded westward. Passenger and freight service to Cedar Rapids and Marion got underway in 1882. The community was originally called Hague, a name unpopular with many of its German settlers. Some residents referred to the community as Poker Flat, a nod to a storekeeper that used a red-hot poker to warm beer he sold in the winter. The poker gave the beer a flat taste, and thus the nickname. The Milwaukee Land Co. officially named the community Atkins in 1882, in honor of a railroad superintendent. The railroad moved its division point from Marion to Atkins in 1915, resulting in a growth of business and an expanded farming community. The railroad that brought Atkins into existence saw the last freight train pull through in 1978. Local rail service continued until 1980. The railroad tracks were abandoned with the railroad left in 1982. ATKINS TODAY Construction of a new $1.2 million City Hall, public library and community room should be complete in early June 2012. The Atkins Improvement Mission spearheaded the 8,000 square foot project with

funding through a $277,000 Vision Iowa Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grant, the Carver Trust, Mansfield Trust, McElroy Trust, Benton Community Foundation, MidAmerican Foundation, Cargill, Benton County Supervisors, Atkins Community Club, Atkins American Legion, Atkins American Legion Auxiliary, Atkins Women’s Club, an INS Grant and donations from many local businesses and area families. Atkins is home to more than 50 small businesses that bring essential goods and services to the community. They are listed in the Atkins Business Directory found on the following pages. The community also boasts a volunteer fire department, public library, post office, food pantry and two churches. Atkins Elementary is one of four elementary attendance centers in the Benton Community School District. The school served 208 kindergarten through fourth graders during the 2011-2012 school year, as well as preschoolers living in Atkins, Newhall and surrounding areas. The school’s recent building project provided six early childhood classrooms, a new media center, computer lab, office area, updated technology and renovation of existing classrooms. The Atkins Community Club is an active organization that sponsors the annual Watermelon Days, a fun-filled event for the entire family. Always held the first weekend in August, this year’s celebration will be Saturday, Aug. 4, at the city park, 320 Second Ave. Fun starts with a parade at 10 a.m., followed by watermelon eating, a seed spitting contest and games. Atkins offers its residents and visitors several places to enjoy the outdoors. The

BELLE PLAINE www.belleplaine.iowa.us Welcome to Belle Plaine, Benton County’s second largest city. With a population of 2,534, Belle Plaine is located on U.S. Highway 21 just seven miles south of U.S. Highway 30 and along the Iowa Scenic Byway, Lincoln Highway Heritage Byway and the Iowa River Corridor. Belle Plaine was founded in 1862 when Presley Hutton and Benjamin Paris agreed to give the Cedar Rapids and Missouri River Railway Co. 40 acres to establish a train station as the railroad expanded westward. Tall prairie grasses and wooded areas near the Iowa River to the south earned the new community its name. Settlers found the view so commanding they named their new home Belle Plaine, the French spelling for beautiful plain. The new settlement grew by leaps and bounds as the railroad brought jobs and a demand for goods and services. A town square, common to the era, was not constructed as eager residents and entrepreneurs quickly bought up available land. A regal train depot was built in 1894, one of only a few 19th century Englishstyle depots in the country. Now privately owned and vacant, the 180-foot long depot remains today at the intersection of Eighth Avenue and 11th Street. The depot is occasionally open for tours, usually in conjunction with Train Day activities in May. While Belle Plaine has a vibrant and beloved history, residents and city leaders are progressive in efforts to keep their city alive as so many smaller communities around the country wither and die. 2012 will see the completion of a year-long, $4.1 million downtown revitalization project that brought a new green storm water system, water main, street and sidewalk to the two-block business district,

as well as new street lighting and façade improvements to 36 storefronts. A Main Street Iowa community, Belle Plaine had the unique distinction of being the only community in Iowa to simultaneously undertake streetscape and façade projects. The projects came at no cost to taxpayers, thanks to federal and state grant funding. Other recent community improvements include the $2.7 million outdoor Belle Plaine Area Family Aquatic Center, built at the site of the old municipal pool in Franklin Park, and a $9 million addition and remodeling project at Longfellow Elementary and Belle Plaine Junior-Senior High School, both in 2010. Through the efforts of Belle Plaine Partners for Beautification and grant funding, the city acquired 7.75 acres of farmland to develop Beautiful Plaines Prairie Park along Highway 21 on the south side of town. Planting is set for this spring. Plans are also underway for construction of an education pavilion to serve residents, visitors and students of all ages. Belle Plaine’s major manufacturers include Pierce Lumber Inc., Iowa Mold and Engineering Inc., Iowa Metal Products and Precision Sheet Metal. A bevy of small businesses located in Belle Plaine and surrounding areas provide residents a wide variety of goods and services. The Belle Plaine Police Department provides residents round-theclock law enforcement. The 40-member Belle Plaine Fire Department is second-to- none for a volunteer group its size. The Belle Plaine Area Ambulance Service, also based in the community, expertly handles medical emergencies. Belle Plaine is home to the Tippie-Mansfield Airport Industrial Park and

a municipal airport with a 4,000-foot runway. Belle Plaine Community School District served 590 children in preschool through 12th grade during the 2011-2012 year. Preschool through sixth graders attend Longfellow Elementary, while secondary students attend Belle Plaine JuniorSenior High School. Belle Plaine and the neighboring HLV School district share Superintendent William Lynch, as well as some programs and staff. Kirkwood Community College holds a strong presence in Belle Plaine with the Tippie-Mansfield Kirkwood Center, offering high school completion and adult education classes onsite and through the Iowa Communications Network. The center is located in the city’s former public library at 1214 Ninth Ave. The state accredited Belle Plaine Community Library offers residents typical library services as

well as wireless Internet and programming for all ages and interests. Belle Plaine has long been known for its outstanding parks and recreation department that offers year round programs for adults and youngsters alike. Popular youth summer programs include T-ball, baseball, softball, playground activities, swim lessons and golf. Basketball, co-ed volleyball and dance classes are among adult offerings. The community’s biggest yearly bash is the Independence Day celebration, sponsored by the Belle Plaine Lions Club. The fun kicks off with an old fashioned parade down the city’s main street followed by a day of food, fun, games and other merriment at Franklin Park. A fireworks display tops off the day. The 2012 celebration will be one to remember as Belle Plaine celebrates its sesquicentennial with four

days of activities July 1-4. A schedule of events will be published in the Star Press Union and online at www. yourweeklypaper.com. Belle Plaine residents enjoy a host of other events throughout the year, including Halloween Trunk or Treat, a Christmas Homecoming and Easter egg hunt, all sponsored by Belle Plaine Community Development Corp. POINTS OF INTEREST The Belle Plaine Area Museum, 901 12th St., features displays of area history and personalities, the Lincoln Highway, a Native American artifact exhibit and much more. Construction of the new Henry B. Tippie Annex began in 2011, with an open house planned Aug 25, 2012. The 5,352 squarefoot, two-story addition will permanently house Tippie’s extensive collection of memorabilia and will include an auditorium. Tippie was raised in Belle Plaine and went on to become a highly successful businessman, philanthropist and namesake of the University of Iowa’s Henry B. Tippie College of Business. During construction, museum hours will be available through Facebook, www. belleplaineareamuseum. org., belleplainenow.com or by calling (319) 434-6093. Railroad enthusiasts won’t want to miss a 1950 Chicago & North Western Railroad caboose on display on the museum’s east grounds, just past the construction site. The Belle Plaine Historical Society intends to refurbish the caboose and open it for tours at a later date. “The Legacy,” is an 18-by25 foot sculpted brick mural displayed on the museum’s west exterior wall. At a cost of $105,000, the mural is the largest of its kind in the state and depicts 150 years of area history. Designer was Gary Anderson, creator of Cedar Rapids’ Five Seasons sculpture.

7 Historic downtown Thanks to the yearlong downtown revitalization project, Belle Plaine’s main street has a new “old” look that has heads turning. Stroll the two-block to view 36 storefronts that now appear much as they might have 100 years ago. Once a blighted area, the downtown district now holds its head high and is ripe for business investment, a key to Belle Plaine’s future economic prosperity. Murals Three historic murals displayed on downtown buildings, and another attached to a grain bin at the intersection of U.S. Highway 30 and County Road V40, give glimpses into Belle Plaine’s past. International sign makers and artists, The Walldogs, created the murals during a four-day visit to the city in 2009. Their work was awarded the Main Street Iowa Best Design Committee Project in 2010. The murals pay homage to historic downtown, the Lincoln Highway, the railroad and Belle Plaine Canning Co. and Jumbo Well, an artesian well that flowed uncontrolled for 14 months in 1886. The well is long gone, but a boulder marks its location at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Eighth Street. The Walldogs are scheduled to return during the sesquicentennial to paint a mural honoring war veterans and the city’s 150th birthday. King Theatre Located on the west end of the business district, the King Theatre was built in 1930 by Milton Mansfield and remains an exclusively family-owned and operated theatre. The movie house retains much of his décor from the silver screen’s glory days, including the original ticket booth where current owner Steve Mansfield doles out tickets for the latest releases. Technology and seating have been updated, but the King Theatre remains a unique nostalgic jewel in the modern day entertainment world.

BLAIRSTOWN BLAIRSTOWN With 692 residents at the latest census, Blairstown is a quiet community located just four miles south of U.S. Highway 30 on County Road V66. For a town its size, Blairstown has much to offer in terms of amenities and services, including a volunteer fire department, ambulance service and eight-year-old $1.5 million community building housing City Hall, the Blairstown Public Library, a community room and gym. Three churches serve the spiritual needs of the community. Blairstown was founded 150 years ago by John Insley Blair, a millionaire, railroad builder, miner and storekeeper. Eleven families had settled in the community by the end of 1862, lured by the promise of free lots. More families came by train and wagon after the end of the Civil War in

1865. By 1868, Blairstown’s population swelled to more than 1,000. The business climate was flourishing until the founding of nearby Keystone and Van Horne in 1881. With the decline in business, Blairstown’s population dipped to just 600. In its youth, Blairstown was a popular grainshipping center and was noted for its prolific grape and strawberry crops. With the coming of Prohibition in the early 20th century, many local grape growers halted production, fearing their crops were used to make wine. Area children attended classes in the town school for nearly 125 years. The school closed in 1982, 18 years after the Blairstown district joined Benton Community. BLAIRSTOWN TODAY The Blairstown business community is robust,

offering a wide range of goods and services from accounting to engine repair to health services. Residents benefit from locally-based emergency services, provided by 16-member Blairstown Fire Department and the Blairstown Ambulance. The ambulance service last year secured $8,000 in grants and gifts to purchase a new pediatric bag, stair chair, defibrillators and other equipment. Replaced defibrillators were donated to Grace Lutheran Church and Norway Elementary. The service is now working to purchase new reflective safety wear. Top honors go to crewmember Lonnie Ondracek, named the Iowa EMS Association Volunteer of the Year in November 2011. A $1.5 million community building was built eight years ago in the downtown district. The facility houses City Hall, the Blairstown Public Library, a community room and gym. Blairstown’s elementary students attend classes at schools in neighboring Keystone, Norway and Van Horne. Secondary students travel to the Benton Community Middle/High School in Van Horne. Parochial education is provided to area preschool through eighth graders at Central Lutheran School in Newhall. Two parks offer residents and visitors relaxing spots for a picnic or outdoor fun. City Park on Benton Street features a playground, shelter and picnic facilities. At 100 Cedar St. SE, Blairstown’s ballpark boasts two ball diamonds, rolle bolle courts, picnic tables and a shelter. Local residents, and visitors alike, make good use of Hannen Park, a 180-acre recreational area a few miles southwest of Blairstown. The park features 96 campsites, a 50-acre lake, a beach,

swimming and picnic areas, hiking, boat ramp, fishing, a playground, shelters and shower facilities. Piers are ADA accessible. To get to Hannen Park, take County Road E66 west of Blairstown, turn south on 19th Avenue to the Benton-Iowa County Road, then go east. The Blairstown Lions Club sponsors the community’s biggest event every Labor Day weekend – Sauerkraut Days. This year will be extra special as Blairstown celebrates its 150th birthday. While events were still in the planning stages at press time, organizers say the sesquicentennial celebration will include a demo derby, parade, free weiners and sauerkraut after the parade, plenty of food and drink from various vendors, a midway, games, a chain saw carver, 150th commemorative items for sale and much more. KEYSTONE Steeped in German heritage, the small community of Keystone is nestled on County Road V42 three miles north of U.S. Highway 30. Keystone offers its 622 residents a peaceful and close-knit community where small-town pride is at the forefront and a friendly wave at every corner. Keystone was founded in 1881 as the Chicago, Milkwaukee and St. Paul Railroad expanded westward. Most settlers were German immigrants. The origin of the city’s name has been lost to history. Some speculate its nearly halfway location between Chicago and Omaha earned it the name Keystone, or it could have been considered the keystone of the railroad. By 1914, the community was thriving with 15 businesses, water and electrical services and cement sidewalks. The Keystone Turnverein Society was established in 1892. Founded in Germany in the early 1800s, the society believed a strong mind and perfect physique went hand in hand. The Keystone Turners held gymnastic classes and had adult and youth bands and their own choir in the early years. Membership and activities grew as time marched forward. Keystone today has a robust business climate with more than two-dozen local enterprises serving its citizens. From ag businesses to legal services, residents are sure to find what they need close to home. The West Franzenburg addition, a 20-lot residential development, was established on the city’s west edge several years ago. Three lots have been sold to date. The 22-member Keystone Volunteer Fire Department and Keystone First Responders provide residents top-notch emergency services. Other services include the U.S. Post Office and Schroeder Public Library.

Keystone is home to one house of worship, St. John Lutheran Church. The National Arbor Day Foundation and Iowa Department of Natural Resources-Forestry Bureau awarded the City of Keystone the 2011 Tree City USA Growth Award in April 2012. It was one of 24 Iowa communities to receive the honor. Keystone Elementary School served 179 third through sixth graders during the 2011-2012 school year. The school is one of Benton Community’s four elementary centers. Recent improvements include two new classrooms, a computer lab and staff workroom. Residents have longterm care options in town at Keystone Nursing Care Center. The adjoining Keystone Senior Suites offer assisted living accommodations. The Keystone Turners maintain a strong presence in the community today. Their Turner Hall, at 91 Second Ave., is a hub of activity year round. The hall was built in 2007 after fire destroyed the former hall at the same site. Turner Hall features a 2,000 square foot bar room, reception hall, dance floor and six-lane bowling alley. Special events include the annual Children’s Day in June featuring traditional German games, a parade, kids’ dance and other youthful fun. Turner Hall also plays host to an annual BBQ Roundup, dinners, dances and other social events. A relaxing spot to enjoy the outdoors is Allers Park on Fourth Street. It is a welcoming neighborhood park complete with playground, open shelters, tennis court, lighted ball diamond and restrooms.

LUZERNE www.luzerneia.com The tiny hamlet of Luzerne is nestled among rolling farm fields four miles south of U.S. Highway 30 on County Road V44. Luzerne is a peaceful community offering its 96 residents a homey, smalltown atmosphere not far from big city amenities. The community was established in 1868 when the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad abandoned its station at Buckeye and built a station midway between Blairstown and Belle Plaine. A railroad superintendent named the new settlement Luzerne in honor of Lucerne, Switzerland. The rolling hills and valleys surrounding the tiny town reminded him of the Swiss countryside. Present day residents can take comfort that Luzerne has a 13-man volunteer fire department ready to meet their emergency needs.

Police protection is provided by the Benton County Sheriff’s Department. Students living in Luzerne attend classes in Belle Plaine or at Central Lutheran School, Newhall. Luzerne is home to one house of worship, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 107 Maple St. The congregation was organized in 1859 and is considered the mother church of all Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod churches in Iowa. The church building where the congregation worshipped for 130 years was destroyed by fire in 2001. Determined to go on, church members decided to rebuild and dedicated a new church on the same site one year later. A community highlight, the city park is located on the corner of East Iowa and Main streets. It features a shelter house with picnic tables, baseball field and

newer playground, Luzerne Safe Kids Zone. The Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa and Luzerne residents placed a Blue Star Memorial By-Way plaque at the park last fall to honor those who served in the military. Social events in Luzerne include St. Paul’s Lutheran Church fall soup supper and summer ice cream social, and the Luzerne Fire Department’s annual BBQ supper, also in the summer. NEWHALL NEWHALL A small Benton County community just 15 miles west of Cedar Rapids, Newhall lies two miles north of U.S. Highway 30 on County Road W14. Newhall was platted in 1882, a year after the Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad expanded its line through Eldorado Township. The settlement was likely named in honor of John B. Newhall, a lecturer who toured the United States and abroad touting the virtues of the Iowa Territory and the Midwest. Fire destroyed 17 Main Street businesses in 1916. The setback did not deter Newhalls residents, and rebuilding began immediately. The Newhall Independent School District was organized in 1895. The district joined Keystone, Van Horne and Blairstown schools in 1964 to form the Benton Community School District. Lutheranism gained a stronghold during the community’s early years. St. John’s Lutheran Church organized in 1871, followed by Concordia Lutheran Church in 1887. The congregations combined when St. John’s built a new church building in 1949. Parochial education came to Newhall-area children when St. John’s Lutheran School opened in 1877. Some 90 years later, Central Lutheran School was founded when parochial students from Luzerne and Atkins joined St. John’s pupils in Newhall. According to the 2010 census, Newhall has 875 residents. Comfortable, small-town living is among virtues appreciated by its residents. The Newhall Volunteer Fire Department and Newhall First Responders provide the community emergency services.

Construction of a new stall at the fire department should be complete this fall. Planning is underway for a new wastewater treatment plant. City leaders are hopeful the estimated $2.5 million project will get underway in the fall. Other improvements in the works include a new well and generator for the wastewater treatment plant. Uncommon for a town its size, Newhall boasts nearly two-dozen small businesses that provide nearly everything residents could want, with goods and services ranging from automobile dealers to meat processing. With an eye to potential growth, the city dedicated a 90-acre tract for future commercial or residential development. The Newhall Public Library and U.S. Post Office continue to offer muchneeded services close to home. The community has three churches to meet its residents’ spiritual needs. Newhall students attend Benton Community Schools. Elementary classes are held in Atkins and Norway. Seventh through 12th graders attend the middle/ high school in Van Horne. Central Lutheran School, 310 Third St. W., provides a Christian-based education for preschoolers through eighth graders and is the only non-public day school in Benton County. Enrollment for the 20112012 year was 142 students. Recent improvements include new classrooms, a gym, library, media center and enlarged kitchen. Two parks offer residents prime spots for a relaxing outing. At 206 Third Ave., Main Park features an enclosed pavilion, picnic areas, gazebo, playground and restrooms. West Park, 300 Railroad St., boasts an open-air

pavilion with small kitchen, picnic tables, a playground and restrooms. A soccer complex is located on Sixth Street. Newhall also offers tennis courts, baseball and softball fields and a walking track.

NORWAY With 545 residents, Norway is located four miles south of U.S. Highway 30 on County Road W24. Norway was founded in 1863 by Osmond Tuttle, a Norwegian who named the new community in honor of its Scandinavian settlers. This tiny yet proud community is home to more than 20 small businesses offering a bevy of goods and services to area residents, as well as the Frontier Natural Products Co-op, the world’s largest global supplier of organic herbs and spices. The community is proud to have its own emergency services, Norway Fire & Rescue and Norway First Responders. Blairstown Ambulance provides ambulance service. Law enforcement is through the Benton County Sheriff’s Department. Other services include the U.S. Post Office and Norway Public Library, both on

Railroad Street. In addition to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Norway is home to United Methodist Church and Prairie View Christian Church. Norway Elementary is the largest of Benton Community’s four elementary centers, with 321 students from Norway, Blairstown, Atkins Watkins and Newhall in the 2011-2012 school year. Improvements were recently completed to restrooms, plumbing, classroom ceilings and lighting. Baseball is Norway’s claim to fame, and the community’s favorite pastime is showcased at The Iowa Baseball Museum of Norway, located at 112 E. Railroad St. The museum pays tribute to the Norway Tigers, the high school team that brought home 20 state championships, and other hometown heroes who made it big on college, semi-pro,

major and minor league teams. Notables are Mike Boddicker, Bruce Kimm and Hal Trosky. The movie “The Final Season,” released in 2007, is based on the Norway Tigers’ story and was filmed, in part, in Norway and surrounding areas. Museum highlights include the Norway High School scoreboard; Trosky, Boddicker and Kimm jersey displays; murals; baseball and Norway school memorabilia and the Tigers’ championship trophies. A variety of baseball items are for sale, including clothing, calendars, “The Final Season” memorabilia and framed murals. The museum received a $3,000 grant this year from the Union Pacific Railroad to do a new mural, and plans are in place to enlarge a mural added in 2011. New in 2012 are six different baseball banners displayed on Railroad Street. The Iowa Baseball Museum of Norway is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m., or by appointment by calling (319) 721-6288 or (319) 227-2044. Admission is a free will donation. Find more information at www. norwaybaseballmuseum.com or on Facebook. The ball field where the town’s ball legends got their start is located on the southwest side of the city, across from the iconic St. Michael’s Catholic Church. The Iowa Amateur Baseball Association now plays on the field. The city park at 302 Line St. offers a picnic area, shelter and new playground. A six-hole disc golf course will be installed this year, weather permitting. Fundraising is underway for a new covered pavilion. VAN HORNE www.vanhorneia.govoffice3.com VAN HORNE www.vanhorneia. govoffice3.com Welcome to Van Horne, a community of 682 residents located on County Road V66, three miles north of U.S. Highway 30. Van Horne was founded in 1881 as the railroad marched westward. It was named in honor of ChicagoMilwaukee Railroad Superintendent Sir William Cornelius Van Horne. Van Horne is prospering today, much as it did in its early years. In November 2011, voters passed a bond issue up to $400,000 to build a new community center, library, and to renovate the current library for a city hall. Total estimated cost is $1.2 million. A major fundraising campaign will soon be underway to finance the remainder of the project. The community center will be built west of the fire station. At approximately 4,800 square feet, it should seat an estimated 200 people. The new library will be 3,200 square feet, while the city hall will have 2,100 square feet, up from 800 in its current location. Construction should start late this year. Other examples of Van Horne’s progressive direction include city-owned Country View Estates, a 12lot housing development, and an industrial park designed with an eye to the future. The residents of Van Horne support more than two-dozen local small businesses offering a wide range of goods and services. The Van Horne Fire Department and Van Horne First Responders provide emergency services. Other services include the U.S. Post Office and Van Horne Public Library. Van Horne was among 86 Iowa communities to receive the 2011 Tree City USA

award from the National Arbor Day Foundation and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources- Forestry Bureau in April 2012. Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Salem United Methodist Church and St. Andrew Lutheran Church are the city’s houses of worship. Van Horne is home to the Benton Community Middle/High School, with 737 students from eight communities enrolled in 2011-2012. Ninety-one preschool through second graders attended Van Horne Elementary during the 20112012 school year. The community offers its citizens a recreation complex with two ball diamonds and a soccer field. The city park, in the 600 block between Third and Fourth avenues, features open and enclosed shelters, a playground and picnic tables. Golf enthusiasts spend many hours on the links at Tara Hills Country Club, a 9-hole course just 2.5 miles west of Van Horne. Tara Hills is one of Benton County’s four golf courses. The Van Horne Events Committee sponsors the annual Van Horne Music Fest in June. Now in its fourth year, this year’s event is set for Saturday, June 9. It will feature a full day of fun for the entire family beginning with a 5K walkrun and pancake breakfast. Most events will be held on Main Street. Kickball and beanbag tournaments are scheduled throughout the day, along with music and plenty of food and drink. Musical groups Past Masters, Something Underground and Supersize Seven will play at designated times from 5 p.m. to midnight. Community groups sponsor events throughout the year for Van Horne’s younger set, including an

Easter Egg hunt, Halloween and Christmas parties.

WATKINS WATKINS Situated just five miles south of U.S. Highway 30 midway between Blairstown and Norway, the unincorporated community of Watkins offers its approximately 100 residents peaceful, rural living. A settlement that sprang up as the railroad expanded westward, Watkins was platted in 1873 and named in memory of a railroad superintendent by the same name, who was killed in a railroad accident east of town. In its infancy, Watkins was a thriving shipping point for grain – 116,000 bushels were shipped in 1878. Today, more than a half dozen small businesses are located in Watkins and the surrounding area. Law enforcement for the tiny community is provided by the Benton County Sheriff’s Department. Fire protection is through the Norway and Blairstown fire departments. The Blairstown Ambulance provides emergency medical services. St. Patrick’s Catholic Church is the community’s only house of worship. The U.S. Post Office, at 201 First St. is open convenient hours to meet the postal needs of local residents. Watkins’ young residents attend elementary school in neighboring Norway, while secondary students travel to Benton Community Middle/ High School in Van Horne. Baseball has played an integral role in the life of the community for nearly a century, beginning with the establishment of the Watkins Athletic Association in 1913. For many years it taught baseball fundamentals to boys and girls in Pony, PeeWee and town leagues. The community is home to the Watkins Mudhens, an independent and selfsupported amateur baseball team managed by Randy Walter. Despite competition from much larger cities, the Mudhens took the

Iowa Amateur Baseball Association championship six of the past 11 seasons, and last year became the first team in history to win the championship four years running. Evening home games are played at Gabe Kuester Memorial Ball Park on Thursday and some Sundays. The team travels to nearby Norway for Wednesday evening contests. The 2012 season opens the week of May 19. Watkins’ annual Independence Day celebration is held at the ballpark the Saturday after July 4. This year’s event will be July 7, when the Watkins and Norway men’s teams will battle it out for bragging rights. The Watkins Savings Bank sponsors a yearly night at the ballpark with free admission, food and prizes. For information about the 2012 event, contact the Watkins Savings Bank at (319) 227-7773. An annual benefit car show to help neighbors in need is held every September. Proceeds typically help individuals with burdensome medical expenses. Watkin’s city park offers a baseball diamond, grandstand, pavilion and picnic area for outdoor enjoyment. Restrooms are open only during events. Landmarks of historical interest in the Watkins area include Youngville Café, located at the intersection of U. S. Highway 30 and 218. This historical museum was formerly a filling station and eatery that served Lincoln Highway travelers from 1931 to 1967. The Youngville Lincoln Highway History Association organized in 1997 to preserve the café’s history, and that of the Lincoln Highway and surrounding area. The group’s restoration efforts earned Youngville Café a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Youngville Café is open

for lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday from early May thorough early October, and during Friday’s farmers markets from 3:30 to 6 p.m. This year’s farmers markets run from June 1 through Oct. 12.
