Brooklyn Historical Society is cooking • Vintage stove found to fill a 'big gap' in Brooklyn museum By DANN HAYES

ometimes the neatest things come in some very plain boxes. Take for instance the Brooklyn Historical Society. On Wednesday, April 25, the society was the recipient of a plain brown/tan box, ultimately delivered to the museum building – the former William Manatt home built in 1869. Aside from the package being somewhat heavy, it was fairly nondescript – until it was opened. Inside was a vintage cook stove for the museum kitchen. According to Margery DeVilder, the stove was located at an antique store in Idaho Springs, Colorado, by Carol Hanson on a recent trip taken by Carol and her husband. Idaho Springs is a small town west of Denver in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Founded in 1859 by prospectors during the early days of the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, the town was at the center of the region's mining district throughout the late nineteenth century. The town is now a popular tourist stop and antique center. "The stove is a major acquisition that will fill a big gap in the replication for the house as it may have been around 1900," DeVilder said. The stove was purchased with donations from Merlin Manatt, John and Marlene Manatt, Doris Manatt, the children of Harold and Fern Ford and with

A vintage 1900 cook stove, above, is the newest acquisition for the Brooklyn Historical Museum as members continue working to replicate the Manatt House to its 1895 turn of the century history. "One of them main purposes of the Brooklyn Historical Society is to preserve the area's history though the actual house itself." a $1,590 grant from Poweshiek County Alliance. According to a note from Hanson to the BHS board describing the stove, the "top is a warming box, used as a warming drawer for rolls or pies or sometimes for storage," she wrote. "Each lid has lifters; stove can be used for wood burning." In other words, the stove is a working stove. However, it won't be working

at the museum, at least not for now, since the chimneys are no longer usable at the house, DeVilder said. Steve Rhoads added that employees with Jasper Construction installed the stove. Those employees included Steve Rhoads, Ramon Fonseca, Eduardo Cervantes, Angel Cervantes, Cody Wilson, Nick Wilson and Anthony Diaz. "Acquisition of this vintage stove as the 'focal

point' of the kitchen will certainly bring 1895 'turn of the century history' forward to all those visiting the William Manatt House," said Jan Bittner, director of the Brooklyn Historical Society. "One of the main serving purposes of the Brooklyn Historical Society is to preserve the area's history through the actual house itself." Members hope that by historically furnishing the rooms, the William Manatt House will continue as a living history museum through its period furnishing. "This will be such an addition for the area school children and visitors alike who visit and utilize the museum throughout the year," Bittner said. "By enhancing the kitchen and, in time, the other main rooms, the house will continue as a venue for education programs and social events for generations."

Things are Kraze in Brooklyn

• New flower, home decor, design shop adds jewelry and memorial items to stock By J.O. PARKER

hings are definitely going Kraze in the Brooklyn area – yeah, it’s spelled Kraze. Kraze is more than just a flower shop, it’s on the cutting edge of design. Owner/designer Donna Baustian and her daughter, designer Carla McClenathan, can not only design beautiful flower arrangements, they are design colorists and home decor specialists. “We design in flowers, paint and home decor,” said Baustian of the business. “We can help people choose their colors (in their homes) and home decor.” Located at 1744 U.S. Highway 6, Kraze opened its doors March 26. Business has been so good they’ve even added a few things. “We’ve added a Bling with jewelry, hats, bracelets and scarfs,” Baustian said. “We really appreciate all the business Brooklyn is giving us.” They’ve also added memorial angels and plaques. The new business is in the former Seye Home Decorating building, which the duo remodeled. Ron Hurst of Brooklyn designed the decor of the new business. They call it rustic industrial. Kraze specializes in fresh flowers and plants for weddings, funerals, new babies, anniversaries or any special occasion, parties, Mother’s and Father’s Day, prom corsages and much more. The business also offers a variety of home decor items and helium balloons for all occa-

sions. FTD services is also available. Free delivery is available in the Brooklyn area. There is a $10 charge for delivery to area communities. Peggy Sue Linder is the delivery driver for Kraze. Baustian is former floral shop owner and brings eight years of experience to the business. McClenathan has 14 years of floral and design experience. Having been away from the business for 10 years, Baustian opened Kraze with her daughter, saying there is a need in Brooklyn for a floral and design shop. “I felt since we were raised here, this would be a good location to open,” Baustian said. “Being a florist has always been a passion of mine,” added McClenathan. “I’m excited to be able to use my talents to further the business.” The business is open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday

Kindermusik uses music to develop young minds • Brooklyn’s Angie's Music Studio is offering Kindermusik for youngster age newborn to 7 By J.O. PARKER

usic is a great tool to use in the development of children. Experts in early childhood development have demonstrated that music does more for children than bring them joy. It helps their brain cells make the connections needed for virtually every kind of intelligence. “By moving and dancing to music and playing simple instruments, children im-

prove their gross and fine motor skills,” noted Angie Radcliffe, owner of Angie’s Music Studio in Brooklyn. “Activities that encourage freedom within a fun and friendly structure spark their creativity.” Helping children develop through music is what led Radcliffe to add Kindermusik to her offerings of piano and voice. Kindermusik consists of a number of age-appropriate programs for newborns through age 7. One such program is, “ABC Music &

Me,” for ages 2 to 6 years. It is a research-based language and early literacy program built around music. It helps children, develop pre-literacy and language skills through a child’s favorite rituals: music and story time. At a recent open house in See KINDER page 10

KINDER: Children listen to music and play instruments Continued from page 10 Brooklyn, Radcliffe shared Kindermusik and “ABC Music & Me,” with area youngsters and their parents. The youngsters listened to music, played handheld musical instruments, clapped their hands and even leaped like a frog. The class lasted for about 30 minutes. Among the attendees were Chris and Ashley Grundler and their daughter, Clarie, who is ninth months old, from Grinnell. “We really enjoyed the class,” said Ashley. “I have been looking for some activities for Clarie since she is under one year of age and there is not a lot for her to do. She loves music and I saw the (Kindermusik) ad

in the paper and thought I would give it a try.” Ashley said Kindermusik is a great class for kids and Claire really enjoyed it. “They (the kids) interact with each other and play music,” she said. “The parents get to participate, too.” Other Kindermusik class available are “Adventures,” “Village,” “Our Time,” “Imagine That,” “For the Young Child” and “Family Time.” Radcliffe, who is a state of Iowa licensed music teacher and licensed to teach Kindermusik, is offering “ABC Music & Me” all summer. She is also offering an “Adventures” class for newborns - 3 start-

ing June 7 and continuing to July 5, and for ages 5-7 from Aug. 2-30. She will also offer “Family Time in July and August. She will be offering the other classes beginning in

the fall. “I love music and I wanted to do something that I would be able to reach more kids,” Radcliffe said of offering Kindermusik. See KINDER page 11

Malcom Dayton receives achievement award • Dayton Meats awarded 12 awards by Iowa Meat Processers By DANN HAYES

n 1979 Bill Dayton won his first award as a meat processor. It was for a cooked ring bologna. So it was only fitting that 33 years later, he was awarded the “Grand Champion for Ring Bologna” by the Best of the Midwest, a four state district in the national meat processors association. Dayton was also awarded the champion specialty brat for a cardon bleu bratwurst. That, however, was just the beginning as Dayton Meat Products, Inc., Malcom, won a number of awards at the 2012 Iowa Meat Processors Association (IMPA) convention held Saturday, Feb. 18. “I took 20 products and I won 12 awards,” Dayton said. “This is the most I’ve ever won.” And the best was yet to come. Dayton was completely taken by surprise when he was awarded an achievement award, “In Recognition of Outstanding Contributions to the Iowa Meat Processors Association.” “Meat is a way of life for Bill,” said Marcia Richmann, executive director, IMPA. “He rarely hesitates when asked to help in any project that the IMPA undertakes.” Just about the entire family was on hand, including his dad, Lawrence, who started the business in 1959, and his mother, Edith, when Richmann presented the award. “I had no clue this was go-

Malcom’s Bill Dayton stands with a few of the awards for the products developed at Dayton Meats. ing to happen,” Bill Dayton said. “Usually they do the achievement award at the end of the night, but they announced that it was moved up because they had some special guests.” Those guests were his parents. “In walked my folks,” he said. “They drove up from Texas. It was a good night.” “Bill has been smoking meats for over 35 years,”

Richmann said. “Dayton Meat Products have won more than 100 awards on the state and national level for their meat products,” adding that they were the Triple Crown winner at the Iowa State Fair for his Grand Champion entries in ham, bacon and dried beef. At the recent convention, Dayton Meats was awarded the 2012 Grand Champion Summer Sausage.

“I’m real happy with this one,” Dayton said. “It’s a very difficult item to make and judge.” He also took home the Grand Champion Jerky, restructured. “The reason why we’ve done so well is that I was taught by my father to do a good job,” he said. “Quality in, and quality out. Be consistent.” The business is in his blood. Formerly known as the Malcom Locker, the family business has expanded from just custom meat-processing to custom jerky, deer, sandwiches, homemade pies and catering. During that time, Dayton said, his mom and dad had five kids and his dad “had a lot of free help,” he added with a laugh. “We all worked down here.” In 1999, Lawrence retired and sold the business to has two sons, Bill and David, and son-in-law Mark Lang, who are the current owners. Other awards won by Dayton Meat Products, Inc., at the convention include • Reserved Grand Champion, meat snack sticks • Reserve Champion, small diameter cooked sausage • Reserve Champion, Canadian bacon • Reserve Champion, whole muscle jerky • Reserve Champion, bone in ham • Champion, weiner • Champion, specialty ham

Schoolhouse Garage opens in Guernsey By J.O. PARKER

he eastern Poweshiek County community of Guernsey, population 63, is home to a new business. Schoolhouse Garage, a vehicle maintenance business at 405 Cleveland St. opened its doors in early March. The business is owned and operated by Scott and Michelle Steffen of Guernsey. Robert Schlesselman is the head mechanic. The business provides tire service (new sales and repair), brake service, suspension, exhaust work, oil changes, welding service, tune ups and general engine repairs to the town of Guernsey and the extending towns throughout the area. Small engine repair is also available. Future plans are to offer alignment services and a trailer service to pick up disabled vehicles for service. The business is currently open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Plans are to expand to six days a week. The new business was made possible thanks in part to the Poweshiek Iowa Development (Pow I-80) revolving loan fund. Scott applied for and received revolving loan fund money from Pow I-80. He additionally received business assistance from SCORE and from Paul Heath with the University of Iowa Small Business Development Center (SBDC).
