OUTLINE  FORMAT This  is  a  general  outline  format   used  for   the  report.   You   can  use  this  as  a  guide  when  you  are   wri2ng  your  own  report. 1.

Introduc>on (a) Background  informa2on  /  Opening  for  the  report.   Ask   yourself  what   your   reader   knows  already.  Give  the  impression   that  your  report  is  worth  reading.   Find  a  way   to   open   a   discussion.   Perhaps  there   is   a  problem   and   you   need   to   provide   a   solu2on. (b) Purpose.   Here  you  let  the  reader   know  why   you   are   wri2ng  this   report.   Are  you   wri2ng  to  inform  or  to  argue  something?  You  should  give  a  thesis  statement.  The   thesis  statement   is  usually   a  sentence  or   two  that   tells  the   reader   what   you  are   trying  to  prove  or   explain.  It  includes  the  topic   and  the  point  of  your  paper.    Look   at  these  examples:

This  is  from  an  informa>ve  paper:

The life of a university student can be characterized by the time they spend studying, going to class and socializing with friends. This  is  from  an  argumenta>ve  paper:

(c) (d)

It is necessary for high school graduates to take a year off before going to university to help out in the community, allowing them to become more mature and aware of their local society. Defini2ons.  This  is  op2onal,   but  think  whether  your   reader  needs  to  know  certain   defini2ons  in  order  to  understand  your  report  well. In   the   introduc2on   you   also   talk   about   the   main   themes  that   your   report   will   discuss.

ENGLISH 214 2. Main  Body  of  Essay Here  you  turn  your  notes  in  to  paragraphs  in  order  to  support  your  paper.    This  middle  sec2on  is  a   sequence  of   paragraphs  to  support  your   argument  or  to  provide  the  informa2on  you  promised  in   the  introduc2on.  It  is  important   to  remember   that  we  use  one  topic   per   paragraph  and   that  each   topic   is  suitably   and   sufficiently  supported.  Also  make  sure  that   the  paragraphs  have  been  set  up   in  a  logical  and  meaningful  way. Remember  to  use  headings  to  separate  your  report  and  make  it  easier  to  read.  You  may  also  want   to  use  subheadings.  If  you  do,  separate  the  text  into  smaller   units  and  summarize  the  content.  In   this  way   you   can  also  provide  more  detail  about   the  topic   and  enable  readers  to  find  detailed   informa2on  more  quickly.  Headings  and  subheadings  help  to  divide  your  ar2cle  into  major  points. Let   us  look  at   an  example  to  help  you.  Let   us  say  you  are  wri2ng  about  Food  in  Saudi  Arabia.  Your   headings  may  include,   the  food  of   the  North,   Food  in  Riyadh  and  Fish  dishes  from  Jeddah.  We  can   take  one  heading  like,  Food  in  Riyadh  and  divide  this  into  subheadings  including,  Sweet  dishes  and   fes2val  dishes.  Look  at  the  diagram  below: Major  Topic  1 (a) Subtopic  1 i. Details ii. Details

Food  in  Riyadh (a) Sweet  Dishes i. Details ii. Details

(b)

(b)

Subtopic  2 i. Details ii. Details

Fes2val  Dishes i. Details ii. Details

You  may  have  up  to  3  major  topics  for  a  600-‐800  word  report. 3. Conclusion  /  Summary This   really   depends   on   your   report.   In   this   sec2on   you   may   also   have   recommenda2ons.   In   general,  the  conclusion  should  match  what   you  said  in   your   introduc2on.   However,   you   should   avoid  repea2ng  it  too  closely.   The  conclusion  should  stress  the  importance  of  the  thesis  statement   and  should  give  the  reader  a  sense  that  the  report  has  come  to  a  close. Some  useful   sugges2ons   when  you  write  your   conclusion   are   to  ask  yourself,  “So  what?”.  Show   your  audience  that   your  paper  was  meaningful  and  useful.  Also,  do  not  just  repeat  what  you  have   wri^en   in   the   paper!   The   reader   knows   what   you   have   put.   Instead,   show   them   how   your   evidence  fits  together  with  your  main  points.   4. References  /  Bibliography Any   sources  you  use  need  to  be  listed  in  a  bibliography   at  the  end  of  the  report.  This  will  use  the   MLA  format  which  you  have  learned  in  102. You   will   need   to   ensure   that   you   have   a   minimum   of   five   sources.   These   will   include,   one   periodical,  one  from  the  internet,  one  interview  and  two  addi2onal  sources. HOW  MANY  WORDS  DO  I  NEED  TO  WRITE  IN  EACH  SECTION? As  a  guide,   you  should  aim  to  write  between  75-‐100   words  in  the  introduc2on,  450-‐600  (150-‐200   words  per  paragraph)  words  for  the  main  body  and  75-‐100  words  for   the  conclusion.  This  will  give   you  a  report  of  600-‐800  words.
