HEAR THAT? “Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.”

SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC IN DOWNTOWN WEST CHESTER. SKIP THE IPOD AND HEAR LIVE MUSIC TONIGHT!

The first issue of Fig® West Chester hit the streets this past November. Since then, we’ve spent a good deal of time answering the question: Why “fig”? What does it stand for? Yes, fig is a fruit. It’s also one of the oldest symbols of unity and prosperity given to mankind. It’s a renaissance fruit appearing throughout history in paintings, in parables, in proverbs and in poetry. At Moxie House, “Fig” means creative communication designed to celebrate small cities and towns. It’s about recognizing the “seeds” that comprise this community. It’s about creating a culture that helps them to grow. It’s about supporting local businesses so we don’t end up living in a world where our only choice is shopping at the mall and eating at chain restaurants. It’s about supporting local food and farms, celebrating local artists, local talent and local businesses. It’s about giving back to the community and recognizing those who make a difference. Each seasonal issue of Fig® celebrates unique aspects of West Chester. This spring, we have chosen to celebrate our thriving music community. West Chester is a musical place — a mini-Nashville, if you will. Can you hear it? It starts with a world-class music program at West Chester University’s School of Music and extends to the live music happening downtown six nights a week. Think you have to go to Philadelphia to hear great music? Think again. Downtown West Chester is alive with the sounds of rock, jazz, funk, blues, soul, classical and more. Blues on Monday, acoustic guitar on Tuesday, keyboards and reggae on Wednesday, jazz on Thursday and good ol’ rock and roll on Friday and Saturday. You can’t do that in every small town, and that’s one thing that makes West Chester unique. In this issue, we pay tribute to the local musicians who play their heart and soul out at every gig. Many of them are incredibly talented yet often under-recognized and under-appreciated. Some have graced the stages of XPN’s World Café Live in Philadelphia and The Queen in Wilmington as well as the Philadelphia Folk Festival — and you can see them right here in our town. Come support them. They are part of the seeds of our musical community. Next time you find yourself out on the town, tapping your foot, nodding your head to a beat, maybe dancing with friends — thank them for the music. We sure do.

Rachel Phillips, West Chester resident and Fig® Community Coordinator

“I am so thankful to be living in a town where we have incredible live music. I am proud to be a part of the Fig® team and to share the images and stories of this special place with you. Read, listen & enjoy! ” Rachel Phillips

authentic:

DR. TIMOTHY BLAIR

Dean and Professor of Piano College of Visual and Performing Arts West Chester University of Pennsylvania WALKING THROUGH THE SWOPE MUSIC BUILDING with Dean Timothy Blair is like watching a maestro conduct a symphony orchestra. Blair’s pride in the facility he helped create along with the students and faculty who now benefit from its composition is a tribute to one man’s passion for the arts and his commitment to ensure their bright future.

You are the longest serving dean in the School of Music’s history. What keeps you here? West Chester University is a very special institution in so many ways. Having been here since 1990, I have seen many changes for the better, and I count myself fortunate and proud to have the opportunity to make my own professional contributions. You are also an accomplished pianist. What is it about keyboard music that inspires you? Since four years of age, I have been playing the piano. It has allowed me to express my innermost self, more than words often can. Like all musicians I also love to bring joy to audiences and the audiences in turn bring joy to me. At the same time I’ve had the tremendous satisfaction of seeing my students go on to great successes in their own musical careers.

10

You have formed numerous partnerships with some of the country’s premier music venues. Why is this important to the advancement of West Chester University? These special educational partnerships are crucial to building a more diverse environment in which our students, faculty and staff can thrive. By working together we are all stronger and more creatively robust than working alone. FIGWESTCHESTER.COM |

How has the Swope Music Building and the Performing Arts Center enhanced the quality of instruction for students? The facility immediately brought about a dynamic sense of artistic and musical purpose from our student body. The energy created by such a wonderful learning environment, coupled with expert instruction from our faculty was infectious. It produced a remarkable atmosphere of achievement and accomplishment. You were instrumental in helping the university receive a prestigious All-Steinway School designation through the acquisition of more than 111 of the coveted pianos. What does this achievement mean to you? When I became Dean I immediately assessed the condition of our piano inventory which was 40-plus years old and almost completely worn out. After meeting with the piano faculty, there was a resounding request to acquire as many Steinways as possible because they represent a standard of excellence. We feel these pianos demonstrate WCU’s commitment to the success of both students and faculty... now and in the future.

WHAT MAKES PLAYING MUSIC IN WEST CHESTER SO SPECIAL? “There are so many different bars and venues in town for people to choose from. We know the people that are out to see us play want to be there. We play the venues we love and love the venues we play. There’s such a vibrant atmosphere here.” Benjamin Green Member of Good Vibes Inc. and Ka-Pow! “The West Chester music scene is more than just a music scene to me. My life is filled with amazing people that I have met on stages, porches, couches, around campfires, and up and down the sidewalks of the borough. All while playing my guitar and singing.” Robert Mastrippolito Member of The Sermon! and The Rolling Thunder Blues Revue “West Chester has been the home of great music from Samuel Barber to the successful bands from the mid-70’s and today. In our town, you can find any number of musicians who have the skills to do almost any kind of tune. I mean, where else can you play a roadhouse bar, a dance club, a street festival and Longwood Gardens in the same month?” Rob Dickenson The Rob Dickenson Band

I VIVIDLY RECALL THE FIRST TIME I STROLLED THROUGH A DOWNTOWN WEST CHESTER EVENING, SOME FOUR YEARS AGO. Fresh from a move into this exciting new town, I walked along the sidewalks and warmly lit streets, in search of a bite and some entertainment. It wasn’t long into my journey, when I heard the bright blast of a trumpet dancing atop the vibrato of a Hammond organ, above a neon sign simply read “UP.” The fog in the upstairs window skewed my view of what was happening, but the bluesy backbeat was enough to tell me there was no other place I needed to be. It wasn’t long after that day Vincent’s jazz club closed its doors for good. I thought its death would somehow take along the musical spirit in its wake, but soon enough I found a vibrant crop of bars, restaurants, and people that began to show me the tunes are still very much alive. I was unaware of the musical vibrance this town possessed, but as my ears began to open up, my eyes began to take notice. Walk down the street on any summers evening and you’re gonna catch a few students perched at any random corner kicking out a jam. Pause long enough to hear their story, and you’ll see the majority will point you towards West Chester University and their acclaimed All-Steinway School of Music, located in a building shaped like a piano. Everywhere you look, it’s evident West Chester is a place where music is born. From birth the town has offered the perfect platform and incubator, allowing locals to display their talent, and providing an attractive destination for musicians country wide. Starting in the spring and waltzing into the fall, West Chester holds numerous music centric festivals. The Chester County Jazz Festival invites you to come on out and “soothe your soul” (June 29th to July 1st). This dynamic and diverse family oriented festival invites you to expand your musical pallet — experience three days with friends and family amongst a collage of jazz heavyweights. Mid-July brings along another local favorite, Turk’s Head Music Festival. Celebrating its 30th anniversary July 15th, this is one day that perfectly blends neighbors and regionals, alongside passionate and personable local vendors, located in one of West Chester’s most scenic and storied parks. The synergy in the atmosphere, history, and music make for an experience completely unmatched... anywhere. Though these festivals are amazingly alive, this isn’t necessarily where the scene crescendos. Toss on your old leather jacket, and roll a pack of Camels into your sleeve while you head to The Note if you miss the rocking days of Rex’s. Wander down Gay and back up Market, in and out of cafés and cocktail bars and discover anything from emerging cover bands, to established musicians pouring out their heart through a six string. When you wind down and begin the walk home, don’t ignore that sound spilling out the upstairs window of a bar you recognize as an old haunt, because it’s now so much more than that. Side Bar & Restaurant now respectfully takes the place of the old Vincent’s, with young and talented acts like The Sermon! driving home the blues better then this town’s ever seen. Novices become artists, artists turn into mentors, and their soul and sound lives on in West Chester. Evan Wawrzyniak, West Chester resident & music enthusiast

IT’S GOOD TO BE A SPECTATOR, and West Chester is certainly not shy when it comes to dynamic venues and musicians that allow you to perch atop a bar stool and escape whatever ailments life may serve. But sometimes being on the receiving end of the speakers only provides a small soundbite to what really drives the insiders... the musicians. So while we get to sit back and enjoy the show, these individuals have decided to take the initiative and live it.

giving back Volunteers who make a difference.

JIM NELSEN WXPN MUSICIANS ON CALL “I REMEMBER ONE TIME I STARTED STRUMMING ALONG TO THE CHORDS OF BROWN EYED GIRL,” recalls Jim Nelsen. “There was this girl, about 12 or 13, laying sick in a hospital bed, her large family by her side. About one verse in the girl begins to sob . . . I finished up the song and eased my way out of the room, unsure of what upset the girl.” Then Jim’s posture begins to straighten up and you can see a small smile shine through his serious demeanor. He goes on, “later that evening I ran into the girl’s father and had to stop and ask if I upset her in any way.” The father paused, and in placing his hand atop Jim’s shoulder he emotionally responded, “...you must have something special. You really touched her.” It’s that deep moment and many more that validate Jim’s experience with WXPN Musicians On Call, the local chapter of the New York-based nonprofit, that brings musicians alongside patients in healthcare facilities throughout the Delaware Valley. Jim got on board with the program one year ago, and sometimes struggles to comprehend the impact the simple gift of music has given to so many in such a short time. Every couple weeks he comes home from his 9-5 and makes the rush-hour trek from West Chester to one of several hospitals in Philadelphia. It’s a small amount of effort and love for one musician to give out, but the significance resonates beautifully with all the ears and hearts it’s touched.

THE MERCHANT OF MENACE Re-Imaginers Gallery

MICHAEL ARIZIN Owner of The Merchant of Menace

Michael Arizin believes in second acts, not just in life, but in love and in art as well. Michael is in the midst of his own second act, having left the world of finance after thirty years to pursue a long -growing love for an art form that speaks to infinite possibilities.

34

The trick to any successful second act of course is injecting a new purpose, a new exuberance to that which conventional wisdom tells us is no longer useful. For Michael, this meant shedding his corporate armor and becoming “The Merchant of Menace,” the purveyor of a new and original form of art, which takes the detritus of our everyday lives and crafts them into wonderfully imaginative and emotionally stirring pieces. From furniture crafted from New England barn wood, to animal sculptures from antique tractor parts, the Merchant of Menace sees the art in them all.

The Re-Imaginers Gallery of the Merchant of Menace is the fitting showplace for these one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Itself enjoying a re-energized second act, the 100-year-old building which houses the Gallery, previously served as a Meeting House, the Town Grange, and a schoolhouse. The art and the Gallery, like the man himself, are living testaments to the possibilities of second acts for all of us. “I am inspired by the vision and creativity of these artists who see the possibilities,” says Michael. In opening the Gallery, he hopes to make the art more accessible and provide a forum for these inventive artists to show their work. “Collectors who choose to make any one of these artworks a part of their own environment will be rewarded daily with a light heart and a broad smile.” Stop by The Merchant of Menace and meet Michael: Opening this March

old is new THE NEW HOTEL WARNER COMPLEMENTS THE HISTORIC STYLE OF WEST CHESTER

Stair railing of the vintage building

BRIAN MCFADDEN local developer & owner of the future Hotel Warner SINCE 1762, WHEN THE TURKS HEAD INN OFFERED WEARY TRAVELERS A ROOM, A MEAL AND ENOUGH GROG TO INSURE A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP, WEST CHESTER HAS BEEN A PLACE OF REFRESHMENT FOR VISITORS FROM NEAR AND FAR.

By the early 20th century, downtown sported as many as a dozen hotels. But as times changed the number dwindled until the last of the downtown hotels, the exquisite Mansion House, closed its doors some 40 years ago leaving visitors to search beyond the borough for a warm bed. Those times are about to change, again. Brian McFadden, a local developer and owner of lodging establishments down the shore, is currently in the midst of building the Hotel Warner, an up-scale 80-room hotel at 120 North High Street in the heart of West Chester. “Its location is

where the Warner Theater once stood,” said McFadden. “We’re using what had been the lobby of the theater and converting it into the lobby for the hotel. The original marquee still exists and will make an elegant entrance.” “The new structure will complement the historic structure that faces High Street,” continues McFadden. “It matches the grand style of the original Art Deco building but offers contemporary standards of new construction, including geothermal heating and cooling and solar panels.” The Jazz Age meets the Modern Age in this future downtown gem. by Malcolm Johnstone, wcbid.com

the art of the hunt WESLEY SESSA LIVES FOR THE HUNT. Not the gun-toting pursuit of a wild beast — rather the chase for rare antiquities that capture the intimate details of history and provide a glimpse into lives of generations past. “I love finding things that mean something special to the person who made it,” Sessa explains. “Those are the kind of things that keep you hunting.” Sessa’s search for 18th-and-19th century artifacts made him the perfect candidate to manage the annual Chester County Historical Society’s Antiques Show, an assignment he has graciously accepted since the show’s inception 30 years ago. “It was a serendipitous occurrence,” recalls Sessa, who wandered into the society three decades ago with an old general store ledger and the hope it would become part of the historical society’s collection. The board members appreciated Sessa’s eye for detail, which is critical when selecting the right dealers for the annual show. “There has to be a balance between the decorative and the functional,” Sessa says. “We are not selling things because they are old, but because they have merit.” The Antiques Show has doubled in size and in the past 30 years has raised over $1 million to benefit the Historical Society. Finding those rare gems is becoming increasingly difficult, but it makes the thrill of the hunt even more exciting. “Among the sameness are the individual differences that show its uniqueness,” notes Sessa. “When I find something distinctive and personal it’s quite a rush.” Chester County Historical Society Wednesday - Saturday 9:30am - 4:30pm

“CCHS greatly appreciates Wesley’s dedicated efforts over the last thirty years, which have helped raise vital funds to fulfill our mission and significantly enhanced CCHS’s visibility.” Rob Lukens, Ph.D., President of the Chester County Historical Society
