vid butterfly collector Freddie (Terence Stamp) occupies a rambling house in Kent, bought with his uncle’s football pools win. Lonely and socially inept, when not chasing butterflies he takes his van up to London to stalk a beautiful art student (Samantha Eggar). Before long, armed with chloroform, he kidnaps the girl, taking her back to make her part of his ‘collection’. This version of John Fowles’ 1963 novel was one of the most anticipated movies of the mid-sixties, and a bevy of the decade’s most fashionable young stars were in the running for its lead roles. Stamp got the part even though he wasn’t convinced he was the best candidate to play the pathetic but unhinged Freddie. That must have made him work harder, as he camouflages his modish charisma with a timid, paranoid air and delivers Freddie’s flat, monotonous London voice with almost comically drab perfection. But he can also be chilling when Freddie explodes into violence. As for Eggar, this is easily her best screen role, an alluring mix of naive, vulnerable, coy and erotic. She looked set for major stardom and won every award going

Terence Stamp stars in this classic film of John Fowles’ novel outside the Oscar. It’s a shame she never quite lived up to her promise. Perhaps the film’s biggest revelation, however, is director William Wyler, Hollywood’s then equivalent of a face on Mount Rushmore. After triumphantly managing the bloated excesses of Ben-Hur, studio bosses had pencilled him in for The Sound of Music. To turn that down for this psychological two-hander, and to keep the tension simmering while drawing out the (very British) class-oriented subtext, shows that the old dinosaur could still compete effectively with the new blood. Touches of extravagance in set design and cinematography aside, The Collector bears comparison with some of the classic British psychodramas of the era, not least The Servant. It also, in its depiction of male crisis, sexual obsession and wall-mounted creatures, tips a very knowing hat to a couple of then-recent Hitchcocks. J Upton Page 3

The Angels’ Share

Drive

Ken Loach

Nikolas Winding Refn

Ken Loach’s latest, an Ealing-esque caper comedy involving the theft of a barrel of rare whiskey, is his strongest – and funniest – film in years. Highlights include a fantastic comic performance from Gary Maitland (who has now returned to his job as a binman) and one of the best opening sequences of the year. AD

A neon-soaked pulp noir set to a perfectly-tuned electro soundtrack, Drive is the most stylish film in years and reveals Ryan Gosling as a major screen presence. Taking a heistgone-wrong yarn as the film’s core, Refn expertly creates a numb atmosphere in which incidents of love and violence burn all the brighter. DH

The Artist

The Hollow Crown

Michel Hazanavicius

An adaptation of four Shakespearean history plays (Richard II, both Henry IV’s and Henry V), The Hxollow Crown shows the BBC at its peerless best. Then again, given the talent involved (Jeremy Irons and Patrick Stewart and... ), we shouldn’t be surprised that it succeeds so triumphantly, showing exactly how small-screen Shakespeare should be done. JO

Director Michel Hazanavicius recalls the early days of audiences’ centurylong love affair with motion pictures with this whimsical, wonderful melodrama set in the silent era. Jean Dujardin plays a dashing matinee idol brought low by the advent of talkies, and by his love for a vivacious it-girl, who steals his heart, and then his career. Berberian Sound Studio

Midnight in Paris

Peter Strickland

Allen’s magical romantic comedy stars Owen Wilson as a screenwriter who finds a hole in time that transports him to 1920s Paris and its coterie of famous writers and artists. A refreshingly old-fashioned, nostalgic tribute to the city of love, this is prime Woody without a foot placed wrong. PW

Strickland conjures a thrillingly nightmarish world of sounds and images in his riveting, haunting second feature which takes us inside the increasingly troubled mind of Toby Jones’s timid English sound engineer, hired to create the effects for a 70s giallo horror in a sinister Italian film studio. Surviving Life (Theory and Practice)

One of the most audacious films in recent memory (and also one of the most purely enjoyable), this is an epic celebration of the joys and possibilities of storytelling: continents are crossed, characters re-invent themselves across decades and plot-lines proliferate. Consistently inventive and compulsively entertaining. JO

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Nuri Bilge Ceylan

Tomas Alfredson

This philosophical police procedural, 2012’s most complete directorial vision, draws profound, lingering insights into the human condition from the plight of various authority figures enduring a long night of the soul while out hunting a body. The nuances of a great boxset, on one disc. MM

Swedish director Tomas Alfredson invests this most British of spy tragedies with Scandinavian sadness and Hitchcockian flair. Gary Oldman is a colder, crueller George Smiley than Alec Guinness, Alberto Iglesias’s score is haunting, and the late-70s production design is immaculate. MW

The Story of Film: An Odyssey

The Turin Horse

Mark Cousins

The story of the encounter between Friedrich Nietzsche and an abused cab-horse was the inspiration for this riveting parable in which a father and daughter helplessly witness a ruthless inversion of the six days of Creation. Hungarian master Béla Tarr says that this is his last film, and few swansongs are quite this emphatically final. MB

This 15-hour celebration of over a century of cinema is an epic enterprise whose strength lies in its scope and diversity. Numerous clips, critiques and interviews with key figures recall the classic pictures and inspired talents who have made film the most popular and influential of artforms. Berberian Sound Studio Recommended Director: Peter Strickland Starring: Toby Jones, Cosimo Fusco Extras: Commentary; Deleted scenes; Short Released: 31st December Item# 69445 UK | 2012 | ART-E | 92 | Cert 15

This riveting second feature by Peter Strickland (Katalin Varga) swaps the rural Romanian setting of his debut for eerie interiors: bare corridors, recording booths, editing suites, and the increasingly troubled mind of Gilderoy (Toby Jones), a timid sound engineer who is summoned from the comfy Home Counties to the sinister offices of an Italian film studio to create an effects soundtrack for a giallo horror flick. It begins as a fish-out-of-water tale that mines the English fear of foreignness, but mutates into something much more primal and bizarre. As his hosts’ manners slip from courtesy to contempt, Gilderoy is pitched into a vortex of his own, and the gruesome scenes that he has to watch repeatedly (but which the viewer never sees) begin to have an insidious influence on his mind. In narrative terms, the film is a mystery tour. It’s ultimately more Antonioni than Argento, with clues presented and then discarded. But the world of sounds and images that Strickland creates is thrilling, and the impression it leaves is indelible. NR

Director: Robert Guédiguian Starring: Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Ariane Ascaride, Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet Released: 17th December Item# 69234 France | 2010 | CFWF | 107 | subt | Cert 15

A French drama distinguished by a supreme lightness of touch, Robert Guédiguian’s latest starts out as a study of a marriage and what happens to it when the male half of the equation – Jean-Pierre Darroussin’s sturdy union rep Michel – is laid off from his job on the docks. Then the film and its characters are sideswiped by a breach of trust that robs the couple of their retirement plans – and suddenly we’re faced with a different proposition altogether. Its thesis – that the recession shouldn’t put the squeeze on our humanity – is set out in a series of deftly written, superlatively performed scenes, in which even those elements that might verge on the idealised, such as Ariane Ascaride’s unfailingly patient and loving wife, are grounded with notes of grit and wit. It’s rare to see a fiction film this engaged with the state of things – much less one that also operates so well, and so touchingly, as a love story. Guédiguian takes the so-called quiet lives overlooked by those in positions of power and elevates them to the standing of very fine drama indeed. MM

Fairy Tales: Early Colour Stencil Films from Pathé

Fire-sprites, fauns, butterflies and fairy godmothers, dancing girls, grimacing devils, capering demons and an imp in a salt-box are just some of the diverse characters to be found in this Aladdin’s cave of early cinematic fantasy. With their hand-coloured tints of jade and turquoise, scarlet, crimson, fuchsia and mustard, the films can be mesmerising (Loïe Fuller), surprising (The Hen That Laid the Golden Eggs, Tit for Tat), strikingly bizarre, (Segundo de Chomón’s The Black Pearl), and simply exquisite (The Fairy of Spring). Musical accompaniments, courtesy of the roster of artists on Touch, see the visual trickery of the early 20th century complemented by the sonic explorations of the 21st. These are gleaming jewels of early cinematic entertainment that contain something of he medium’s magical, entrancing possibilities. GH

The Killing: Season 3 Recommended Starring: Sofie Gråbøl Released: 17th December Extras: 3 discs. Item# 69276 Sweden | 2012 | Arrow | 580 | subt | Cert TBC

With the third and final season of the cult Danish crime series generating the same waves of enthusiasm as its predecessors, it’s clear that its success is a phenomenon unlike anything else that has happened for such an intelligent TV drama. It’s not just Sofie Gråbøl’s memorable incarnation of the difficult, uncommunicative, Faroe Island sweater-wearing copper Sara Lund that has created the massive acclaim. There is the steely grip of the show’s producer Piv Bernth (the other key woman behind The Killing, with a contribution as essential as that of Sofie Gråbøl), and, perhaps most important of all, the complex, nuanced writing of Søren Sveistrup, shaking all the clichés out of the crime fiction genre like loose nails. Season 3 gives Sara Lund new challenges as a murder at a Copenhagen scrapyard leads to a plot to assassinate the Prime Minister, but wisely allows her to remain something of an enigma – the retaining of her mystique a central strategy of the series’ creators.
