elebrations were in full swing at Reeds Rains City Living as the North John Street branch marked its first birthday. Clients, old and new, and Reeds Rains colleagues were among the guests at the first anniversary bash, where they enjoyed drinks, nibbles and a slice of cake. Darren Carter, branch manager at Reeds Rains City Living, says: “We had quite a few clients coming through the door with new instructions, so it was a successful event that brought some new business for us. “It was good to let our hair down at the end of what has been a busy and successful year. Now we just want to keep growing.”

he majority of us want to be homeowners. While our neighbours in Europe may be happy renting for life, here in the UK homeownership has always been the dream. Sadly for the last few years at least it’s a dream that most would-be buyers have struggled to realise, largely because banks – desperate to avoid risky lending – are only advancing mortgages to those buyers who can cough up a hefty deposit.

T

Various government schemes have been introduced to help combat this – most notably FirstBuy, which involved an equity loan to help contribute towards a deposit. However, the problem with such schemes is they’ve only ever targeted firsttime buyers, leaving many second-steppers stuck. It’s for this reason the new Help to Buy scheme, introduced in the Budget 2013, was launched. The scheme consists of two parts - a government guarantee on mortgages for homes (old and new) up to £600,000 and an equity loan. “The Help to Buy equity loan scheme was launched on 1 April and is a great way to buy a new

build property whether you are a first time buyer or you're looking to move from your existing property,” explains Sandy Kelly, head of HomesHub, part of the Plus Dane Group. “The scheme assists purchasers who would otherwise be unable to obtain a mortgage as they do not have a large enough deposit. With the Help to Buy equity loan scheme purchasers need just 5% deposit to buy a new home costing up to £600,000. The government will provide a loan of up to 20% of the value of the property so purchasers will only need to secure up to a 75% mortgage.” The loan is interest free for the first five years after which borrowers will pay a 1.75% annual fee, which will rise by 1% above the Retail Prices Index (RPI) measure of inflation every year after that. “The eligibility criteria for Help to Buy is now very broad and HomesHub is currently working with 22 developers over 101 sites across Merseyside and Cheshire so there is plenty of choice,” says Sandy. And the initiative is already proving to be successful. Indeed, according to housebuilders Help to Buy is triggering a market recovery.

CASE STUDY: THE FIRST HELP TO BUY SALE

“I am the first person in my family to own my own home.” HomesHub recently completed the UK's first Help to Buy sale at Taylor Wimpey's Speakman Gardens. Catherine McClean (26), a nurse, and Nikolai Ivanovic (25), a former Queens Guard, recently relocated from Northern Ireland and have taken their first step on the property ladder by using Help to Buy to purchase a three bedroom home. When the couple met at a Liverpool train station last July, little did they know their whirlwind romance would lead to them relocating from Newcastle, Northern Ireland and buying their first home together nine months later. “Help to Buy has been a massive help to us,” says Catherine. “We certainly wouldn’t be in the position we are now without it. It has enabled us to own our own property. I am the first person in my family to own my own home and I am immensely proud. We have been so lucky to have been given a helping hand to allow us to achieve this. And Wendy at Taylor Wimpey was such an extraordinary help to us all the way through the process so we’re really grateful to her too.”

The couple were introduced to the Help to Buy scheme where they could receive a government loan of 20%, which meant that they only needed to put down a 5% deposit and obtained a 75% loan-to-value mortgage. Crucially this would bring down monthly payments for the couple while they progress in their careers. They purchased the final three bedroom semi-detached Bancroft house at Speakman Gardens, in Prescot, Merseyside. In the future Catherine wants to progress in her profession to become a nurse practioner in an A&E crash team. But the couple’s first ambition is to furnish their new home. “It will be blankets on the floor for the first few days while we borrow and buy a few things to start us off,” says Nikolai. Housing minister, Mark Prisk has congratulated the couple. “I'm delighted that, just five weeks after the launch of Help to Buy in the Budget, the scheme's first buyers are moving into their new property,” he says.

To find a development offering Help to Buy visit www.homeshub.co.uk or www.rightmove.co.uk/helptobuy which provide details of all participating developers and sites. Once you have found a Help to Buy property you can make a reservation through the developer who will submit your Help to Buy application to HomesHub.

Job: Aged 15 I was a waitress in The Punchbowl in Sefton Village. I made some great friends who I am still close with today. What does your job entail? As lettings manager at our flagship office in Liverpool I am responsible for ensuring that we provide a high level of service for tenants, finding them a property, finding suitable tenants for our landlord clients and making sure the moving process goes as smoothly as possible.

Holiday: Mum and dad always remind me that I’d travelled abroad three times by the age of two, to Spain, Portugal and Italy. Then the free flights dried up and it was caravans and holiday camps for a few years. Record/CD: A Kylie Minogue cassette. House: Apparently I chose the Crosby house that I grew up in. I was five, and we’d been viewing different houses for ages. As soon as I toddled into Chesterfield Road I demanded “I want this one!” It’s still our family home. Pet: A pair of hamsters named Ronan and Redknapp. They were quite vicious and bit anyone who came near them.

What do you like most about your job? I love finding people the perfect property to rent, regardless of the price range. That is such a rewarding and satisfying part of the job to know that you have helped someone with their dream place.

Free advice from Paul Crowley Help will be at hand for anyone with a legal query, as Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors holds its monthly advice clinic. From 5-7pm on Tuesday 4 June, the firm’s 232 Breck Road office in Anfield will be open to anyone with a concern or question regarding anything from family problems, buying a property and difficulties with employers to criminal queries, injuries, needing a will and negligence claims. The free legal clinics have now been running for around 15 months and Tracy Thompson, practice development manager at Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors, says: “It’s been really successful, as the 5-7pm slot just gives the chance for people to pop in on their way home from work to talk about something that has been bothering them.” No appointment is required for the legal clinic.

Under the Affordable Warmth ECO (Energy Companies Obligation) Scheme, homeowners and those living in private rented accommodation are entitled to a fully fitted high performance boiler in a bid to reduce the carbon footprint and tackle fuel poverty. Now Age Concern Liverpool & Sefton has joined forces with Fletchrose, which already delivers heating services to commercial and private markets and has the resources to cater for people affected under the scheme, to raise awareness of the initiative which may also be available to people in receipt of

certain benefits. Paul Durose, chief executive of Fletchrose, says: “Gas prices as we all know are spiralling in a way that is inconsistent with any increase in government pension support. A high performing boiler can help significantly reduce energy bills, improve efficiency and warm up homes therefore impacting directly upon the standard of living of those affected.” For further details about the Affordable Warmth ECO Scheme, contact Age Concern Liverpool & Sefton on 0151 330 5678.

keep a variety of vacant buildings safe and secure by living in them until they are needed again, with sites ranging from old schools to historic properties and empty houses. Jessica Spencer, branch administrator at the office which covers Liverpool and surrounding areas of the North West, says there are a number of reasons why being a property guardian may have become more popular. “It’s cheap, which is important, and we often get

people who are trying to save for a house or a deposit,” she says. “Some people like the idea of living in an old school or a historical building too. “We’ve also become more wellknown, through word of mouth and working with councils.” Seventeen buildings are currently being occupied around Liverpool including a Grade II listed vicarage in Mossley Hill and a former police station which is more than 100 years old.

Help to Buy at Claremont Gardens

Recognition for MSB Solcitiors Liverpool-based firm MSB Solicitors has been recognised by the Law Society for its high standard of conveyancing.

Claremont Gardens

The final phase of David Wilson Homes’ Claremont Gardens development in Kirkdale has been launched and buyers can now secure a house on the site using the government’s Help to Buy initiative. Claremont Gardens at St Johns Place comprises a selection of two, three and four bedroom homes. With the governmentbacked ‘Help to Buy’ scheme the prospect of owning a first home or moving up the property ladder is dramatically improved for many purchasers as it reduces the deposit required to just 5% and enables qualifying homebuyers to access low cost mortgage finance. The scheme also provides new build homebuyers with the prospect of a 20% equity loan from the government, with no interest payable for the first five years. Steve Jackson, sales director at David Wilson Homes North West, says: “The Help to Buy scheme is the biggest single development in the housing market for the last five years and is already leading to surging numbers of local enquiries. “I’d therefore encourage anyone who is interested in securing one of these homes for themselves to get in touch with our sales team now to discuss what we can offer.” For more information visit www.dwh.co.uk. 52 Your Move

The company, which runs its residential coveyancing operation from its Allerton Road office, has now been awarded the society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS) accreditation. To achieve the CQS accreditation, which was introduced by the society last year, the firm was said to have been put through an “extensive audit” to ensure it fitted the criteria. Paul Bibby, managing partner at MSB Solicitors, says: “As a Lexcel accredited practice it was apt that we should be awarded the CQS accreditation. It will, in future, be a good point of reference for lenders who will

look for CQS accreditation to appoint law firms to their panels. It also tells the clients that the firm conducts their conveyancing to an extremely high standard. “We’re experiencing the busiest period we’ve had for quite some time and with seven fulltime conveyancers we are very well positioned to take advantage

of the renewed property confidence.” MSB Solicitors also has offices in the city centre and Wavertree, operating commercial property and litigation services as well as family, criminal and personal injury litigation.

With two new employees on the team, business owner Thomas Cormack has now been awarded a contract by Top Property Services to help ensure properties’ roofs are in shape for the winter. Thomas suggested carrying out the surveys to Top Property Services and, having already been a preferred contractor for the student and residential property management agency, a deal was agreed. Top Property Services will now offer its landlords the opportunity to have a roof survey carried out on their properties.

Through the surveys, which could potentially be carried out at over 100 sites, Cormack Roofing will highlight any necessary repairs and provide photographic evidence, before carrying out the work if the landlord agrees. Simon Topper, managing partner at Top Property Services, says: “We trust Cormack Roofing 100% and know what to expect from quotation to job sign-off. We also work with them to identify problems before they become major issues, by conducting proactive roofing and guttering inspections on a regular basis. This saves landlords money over the long run, by remedying problems early on which could prove very costly if left.”

Reduce energy bills with Solar PV Merseyside based renewable energy solutions company, Concept LHP, will be highlighting over the course of the summer months how Solar PV installations can help households to significantly reduce energy bills. Patrick Richardson, chief executive at Concept LHP, says: “In February this year Alistair Buchanan, chief executive at Ofgem warned that the “rollercoaster” ride British energy supplies are on will undoubtedly lead to a

significant rise in household bills. He wasn’t wrong. Welfare reforms and the unsympathetic budget gave rise to even more concern from homeowners and that is why we are focusing on educating people on the renewable energy options available to them and showing them that systems such as Solar PV should not be dismissed.” Solar PV systems offer the ideal opportunity for individuals to tackle fuel poverty. The average cost of a domestic installation is £5,000, which comprises of 16 panels secured to the roof of their property.

Patrick says: “While the initial outlay might seem expensive the return on investment can be impressive. If for example a typical household was to invest £5,000 into a savings account the return over 20 years would be £2,700. If the same amount was invested in a Solar PV system the return could be as much as £27,000 ten times the amount generated by a savings account.” Concept LHP provides a complete service including design, installation and maintenance. Warning for landlords Landlords are being encouraged to be proactive about condensation, mould and damp problems that may have occurred in their properties over the winter months. Andy Windsor, a specialist ventilation advisor from EnviroVent, has warned that “painting over the problem is not a long term fix” for property owners who are faced with having to redecorate or clean the walls of mould. He adds: “The summer months offer you the perfect opportunity to exchange old, ineffective extractor fans for something sustainable and energy efficient; be proactive and keep the properties you own

and rent out free of condensation and mould.” The warning comes as EnviroVent has launched a fan scrappage scheme, in a bid to help landlords offer a

sustainable and energy efficient way of living. For more information about the scheme call Andy on 07703193455.

My partner and I have been renting and are now looking to buy a newbuild which is not yet complete. Will we have to start covering the costs of the new home right away? We can’t afford to pay for two homes but will need to keep renting until we’re able to move.

I’m having to relocate for a new job and need to sell my home. If my property doesn’t attract the reserve price at auction, will I still have any options to make a quick sale?

My housemates and I have been renting for the past year and have never missed a payment; however we’ve been given a week’s notice to move out as the house is being repossessed. Our landlord hasn’t been making payments on the buyto-let mortgage but we are being penalised. Do we have rights?

Q

Miss E. Hutchinson, L3

Don’t worry; you won’t have to start paying your mortgage back until your new home is finished. You should, however, check your rental agreement and make sure you don’t sign up to any long term rental agreements. If you rent on a rolling month-bymonth basis you will be able to hand your notice in just in time to move into your new home. You will have to pay some initial fees, such as solicitors’ fees, mortgage surveys and a reservation fee, but these are nominal when you compare them to the amount you are saving in rent. This is one of the reasons why buying a new-build home can make sense for people who have previously rented. With no need to fit new carpets, undertake renovation work, redecorate or have new kitchens and bathrooms fitted, moving into a new-build home rather than a pre-existing one makes a lot of sense for people struggling to save whilst paying rent.

A

Q

Mr D. Wilkinson, L16

Auctions are perfect when you need to sell quickly but still want the best price for your home. As auctioneers, our job is to deliver a strong pricing strategy alongside great marketing exposure to maximise interest in your property. We work hard to raise awareness nationally through our extensive database of active buyers, guaranteeing demand on the day. Don’t panic if the reserve isn’t met; whilst it’s unlikely, it certainly doesn’t mean game over! Often an underbidder falls just short of securing the property. They have shown an intention to buy and a good auctioneer will convert that initial attraction into a post-auction sale. Remember – from the point of instruction, auctioneers will begin marketing your property until your home is sold, usually within an eight week period. Be up front about your moving deadline and choose an auction house that shows it’s committed to selling your home within that time-frame.

Unfortunately, these types of evictions have become more common due to the economic climate. You first need to make sure you have received the correct notice paperwork from your landlord. Normally the mortgage company will send a letter addressed to ‘the occupiers’ to notify you of their intentions to repossess. This letter would normally have helpful information and phone numbers to call. You certainly should have been given more than a week’s notice, depending upon the type of tenancy agreement you have signed. As the tenant you have no legal standing over the mortgage of the property, regardless of your punctual rent payments. That said some lenders are more sympathetic than others and may choose not to sell the property immediately if there is a good tenant present. For more advice call Shelter on 0808 800 4444 or speak to your local CAB.

CURRICULUM VITAE Joshua Marco director, Address Properties

Age: 29 Main duties: I am involved in every aspect of the business from lettings and sales to brand development. Founded Address Properties in: 2012 but the initial concept was initiated by my colleague and business partner Alexander Bennett. Alex developed a niche lettings and management service on a smaller scale before joining forces with my brother Simon and myself. Simon fronts our maintenance department; developing the brand further by incorporating more services in-house including building and a sales department. Education: I gained a BA Hons in Graphic Design at Salford University. First job: After finishing university I ventured into property development with my brother; we renovated, sold and rented our own properties. Shortest job: I lasted a grand total of one week; sorting files for a local solicitor’s company.

What is the secret to your success? Hard work with long hours, good research and knowledge of the market and always putting the customer first.

What is the best piece of advice you've ever received? Write down

“Be prepared for a difficult journey, sleepless nights and grey hairs but most importantly, always learn from your mistakes”

every single idea you have, no matter how big or small, make lists, and always carry a notebook. Who has been your business mentor? My father has been a great inspiration. I have never encountered anyone else who works as hard without complaining and he is still working just as hard into his sixties. What piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to set up their own company? Be prepared for a difficult journey, sleepless nights and grey hairs but most importantly, always learn from your mistakes and strive for improvement moving forward. What makes Address Properties different? We offer a high quality and tailor made service to suit the individual. We are proud to be able to offer all

of our services in-house. Our costs are fair and honest but most importantly competitive. We are not interested in squeezing every penny out of our clients or tenants. We put value on customer satisfaction and have proven that, in turn, this helps us grow through excellent feedback and recommendations. Tell us a bit about Address’ plans for this year: We plan on opening our second office in Liverpool that will further develop our brand by offering a very unique office setup, we will provide a customer focused shop showcasing a few of our new innovations that will ensure that our customers and tenants receive an even better service from us. This will extend outside of the shop floor in to the wider Liverpool area. Watch this space.

Neither, I am actually a Spurs fan. Favourite band/singer? Cold War Kids. Favourite book? Richard Branson’s Autobiography was a motivational read. Favourite film? I absolutely love going to the cinema and watching films and couldn’t pin myself down to just one choice. It would have to be between Fight Club and Leon.

Three ways to breathe new life into your home LAY NEW FLOORING Switching to a new style of flooring, whether it be from carpets to varnished wooden floors or vice versa, can not only transform the look of a living space but can help tailor it more to your needs. Hiring a specialist to lay the flooring will help ensure it fits perfectly into your home and lasts.

REDECORATE YOUR ROOMS Sprucing up the decor is the perfect way to make your home feel brand new. Ensure the walls are in tip top condition before adding new wallpaper or a lick of paint, and paying attention to windows and doors by introducing new curtains or blinds

and a new finish to wooden surfaces can also bring a simple but effective change.

CHANGE THE USE OF SPACE If your loft or garage is full of junk, have a clear out and use the space to its full potential. Introducing a new room can refresh your living space, whether it’s a study or an extra place to lounge in. Alternatively, building an extension can have the same effect. Conversion and extension specialists can help every step of the way.

Liverpool singer, songwriter and guitarist John Power is best known for performing in successful bands The La’s and Cast. But as he gets set to step into the world of acting this summer to play another of the city’s musical icons, John Lennon, we caught up with him for a chat about all of his projects.

BREAKING THE MOULD INTERVIEW WITH SONGWRITER & GUITARIST JOHN POWER

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG What prompted the Cast reunion? I fell out with playing those [Cast] songs and where I was when I was doing it all and I’d kind of moved on and grown up a bit. The first time I started thinking about Cast again I hadn’t been playing Cast songs, I’d been doing solo stuff and I dropped a few in at a gig and I felt the energy from them. I was writing stuff at the time and it wasn’t as solo sounding and started to sound like a band thing. I just concentrated on thinking of how maybe this next bunch of songs could be a Cast project and that’s how it happened; it just slowly came back together. We’ve been playing again for the last two years and it’s been a whole new experience. It’s been a jolly good laugh and I’ve really discovered the energy again to sing those songs and I’m very proud of them now, I’m proud of the band. A lot of bands have been reforming without bringing out new material; they’ve just played their old songs. What made you feel ready to do it? I’m sure at some time in our lives we would have got back on stage again to celebrate Walk Away, Guiding Star and Alright and to sing those songs. I think a lot of bands come back because they think ‘hey we had something together, we shouldn’t just ignore it’, but for us it was very much about the new material really. I’m always writing stuff and some things don’t sound like band material while some things don’t sound like solo material, but it was all about keeping a

balance between the past and the present. Otherwise we’d have just got together, done a tour and it would have been good fun and we’d have been like ‘alright, see you next time it comes along,’ but because of the new material I think that bound us together in the present and gave us some form now and a reason to continue. Last year you had sold out shows, were involved in the Olympics and then the Hillsborough Justice Collective single got to number one. Did you have a particular highlight? Obviously bringing the Hillsborough song to number one, that was a great achievement for everyone involved because it was up against all the pop rival X Factor stuff. For everyone who was involved in the justice campaign and still is, it was such a long journey for the families. As a musician it’s a good achievement but the fact it got to number one is nothing to celebrate, we should celebrate it because of what it represented and what it meant to the families. That was a highlight personally. Your May tour with The Twang is finishing in Liverpool. Is it different when you’re playing in the city? There’s a different feeling in your gut when you’re walking on to a hometown gig and that’s to do with the mixed emotions. You’re slightly nervous and kind of happy because it’s your hometown. You walk on stage and the crowd are expecting something special so you want to make it something special. Last time we played Liverpool it had a really special little vibe to it. I’m sure it’ll be a bit more rowdy this time because it’s the anniversary of Istanbul on the date we’re playing, so it might be that other parts of the city are already celebrating and then we’ll be the icing on the cake by whatever

time we come on stage. You’re performing a theatrical role in Liverpool this summer in Lennon. How did that come about? I can honestly tell you I did not see it coming. I was having a pint and someone rang up and it was the usual kind of thing, but then I never thought much about it. Then it slowly kept creeping in and a script arrived and I thought it was all auditions and stuff but they were saying ‘no, we don’t want you to do an audition, we just want you to do it’. I thought about life and challenges and experiences, and also the fact it’s Liverpool and it’s a homage to Lennon and all of that so I just said yes to them. I have nothing to gage it against you know, I have no experience in this. It’s going to be a completely new experience for me and I’d like to think it’ll be a great experience. I’m going to put the time in and keep it as natural as I can and I’m really looking forward to it now but that doesn’t mean I’m confident, I’ve never professed to being an actor. He’s [Lennon] narrating life, so that part I quite dig. The first half of the show is a musical; it’s the story of The Beatles so it obviously involves singing certain things but after that it’s a bit more about his life and meeting Yoko and there’s more of the story and you’re a lot more involved in it. I do feel quite honoured in a way that I’ve been asked, and now I’d better get learning some lines hadn’t I because I can’t wing this one. Cast will join The Twang at O2 Academy Liverpool on 25 May. Lennon will be on at the Royal Court Liverpool from 23 August to 14 September.

What’s happening?

 Out & about in Liverpool

Young musicians wanted Talented young music artists could soon be hitting the stage in Liverpool city centre when a showcasing event takes place this summer. Poolside will give 16 to 24-year-olds the chance to play their music live while also promoting drug support and training opportunities for young people, when it is held at The Dome, in Grand Central Hall on Renshaw Street, on 18 July. It is taking place with the help of a donation from the Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson’s office to give young people a platform to perform. Headline acts are still to be confirmed but organisers of the event, which is a

Serving up a treat

A new ice cream parlour is creating a buzz on Lark Lane, having been welcomed by the surrounding community, fellow businesses and visitors from across the city. David and Sue Blair and their son Nick opened up Archer’s Jersey Ice Cream in April, and it’s already said to have attracted bank holiday queues up the street, as well as becoming a “meeting point” for people. Nick says: “I feel it’s brought something different to Lark Lane. The area has got a lot of pubs, bars and restaurants but it seemed like there was something missing.

Feedback from people has showed that too.” As well as serving up an array of ice creams, all made locally at a Heswall factory using Jersey milk from the Archer’s franchise’s dairy farm in North Yorkshire, the parlour also offers coffee and seating for customers to sit and enjoy it. “People associate ice cream with going up to a little unit, getting a cornet and walking away but this is a whole experience,” adds Nick.

Auditions will be held from 1-8pm on 1 June at Mode Training, on the fourth floor of Queens Dock Business Centre, and all music genres are welcome from hip hop, dance, soul and R&B to alternative, classical, rock, punk and pop. ASPARAGUS PATCH POPS UP Those who enjoy the muchloved spring vegetable asparagus can make the most of its short growing season by taking a trip to Liverpool ONE’s latest opening.

New pop-up restaurant Asparagus Patch has arrived in the city centre shopping and leisure complex, and offers visitors a whole menu of dishes

incorporating the popular crop. Catch it while you can though as the Manesty’s Lane based eatery, which is using locally grown asparagus from Wirral’s Claremont Farm, will only remain open until 20 June. Asparagus Patch, the first pop-up asparagus restaurant in the UK, is one of several destinations set to refresh the city’s offering for fans of eating out.

The Lark Lane opening came just six months after the family had launched their first branch in Heswall, which was also the first in the franchise to open outside of the North East.

Food BEST FOR...

Cocktails

FOOD / DRINK / MUSIC

Bored of beer and wine? Trying out a cocktail will be sure to shake things up and our selection of city bars will leave you spoilt for choice. Whether you prefer your beverages with or without alcohol, sweet or sour and filled with fruit, fizz or a creamy kick, there’ll be something to suit every taste.

MOJO The Stables, Back Berry Street

This bar boasts world-class liquor knowledge, and not only serves a range of cocktails but provides master classes in how to make them. The menu features a long list of concoctions with everything from a medley of Martinis to Prosecco based beverages and party sized punch bowls.

MILLER AND CARTER Albert Dock

Whether you have a classic cocktail of choice or you’re looking for something different, Miller and Carter can throw plenty of alcoholic and non-alcoholic suggestions into the mix. It’s the perfect destination to kick back with a Kir Royale during a sunny day at the docks, or liven up a night out with a Long Island Iced Tea.

BERRY AND RYE Berry Street

Step back into the 1920s in this ‘speakeasy’ style bar, which is tucked away in the city’s Ropewalks district. The venue specialises in gin and whiskey, along with blues and jazz for a hint of authenticity and, as well as being enjoyed on their own, the spirits of choice are also whipped up into a fine selection of cocktails.

East Village Arts Club 90 Seel Street, Liverpool, L1 In my uni days the Barfly was a regular haunt. The decor was dark and dingy and the drinks in flimsy plastic cups were inevitably splashed over the sticky floors during club nights. I have fond memories of the place but I would never have wanted to eat there. So when I heard the venue, more recently just known as The Masque, had been revamped into the East Village Arts Club incorporating a restaurant, I was curious to see how it had been done. The entrance led straight in to the new eatery and I felt a twinge of nostalgia as the layout of the old club room partly remained, but now natural light was a welcome addition as it shone through the windows, and clean wooden fixtures and fittings combined with cool and comfy seating areas and floral table decorations brought a relaxed vibe. Once handed the menu, it became apparent that we were being spoilt for choice with a wide range of

REVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

both food and drinks. The friendly staff were patient as we rifled through the selection of wines, ciders and beers from across the globe, before I settled on a Liefmans Fruitesse from Belgium and my dining partner quenched his thirst with a bottle of Samuel Adams. We then glanced at the ‘small plates’ (£2.95£4.95) to start. The choice was varied but my partner, somewhat of an olive fanatic, was drawn straight to a portion of the citrus marinated olives. He wasn’t disappointed. I opted for the subtly cheesy crusted parsnips, which had the right amount of crunch, served with a romesco sauce dip and salad leaves. Sharing boards, with the vegetarian Middle East to the Deli and From The Sea themed flavours (£11.95-£14.95) were also recommended as a great starter to share. For the main we were faced with hearty hot deli sandwiches, salads and gourmet burgers, on a menu comprising meat

sourced from Ribble and Dune Valley cattle, seafood, mouth-watering chutneys, flatbreads and brioche buns, as well as vegan and vegetarian options. However, after being tempted by a chilli made with beef chunks, not mince, in the ‘mains’ section (£6.95-£15.95) I chose the delicious fried chicken with biscuits, cream gravy, sweetcorn and mash. A well seasoned crispy coating added a kick to the tender chicken. My dinner date picked the aged rib-eye steak with fries, Montpellier herb butter and a generous pot of pepper sauce, and said it was cooked to perfection. Our only regret during the evening was not leaving room for a pudding, although a recommended strawberry and white chocolate shortcake cocktail proved an ideal liquid alternative and tasted just like a cheesecake. But delightful sounding desserts alone, like the banana and butterscotch Eaton mess with candied hazelnuts, are enough to warrant a second visit. Your Move 85

oodies flocked to Exchange Flags to sample the delights of the Commercial BID’s Food and Drink Festival. Bars, pubs, restaurants, hotels, cafes and shops from across the commercial district and beyond came together and served up some of the tastiest treats they have to offer during the festival. With cupcakes and cream teas, to local delicacy scouse, and cuisine from around the world on offer, there was something to suit every taste. The event coincided with Liverpool’s LightNight festivities and continued the following day, with visitors making the most of alfresco dining in the square. Rare Studios singers and dancers and other performers, including a live jazz band, also kept visitors entertained as they took to the stage throughout the Food and Drink Festival.
