Over 150 food-loving customers and friends attended the bash in the stunning Sefton Park Palm House. The event also launched the Taste of the North event which will be held at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral in April. Ridgeview was served at receptions in Buckingham Palace for Barack Obama and to guests at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee last year.

Stephen Graham, hardworking actor from Kirkby, is arguably one of Liverpool’s biggest and best exports. After appearing in countless films and TV series’ he has become a firm favourite at home and across the pond, his particular forte is showing a distinct human side to the difficult characters he often plays. Your Move caught up with Stephen over a cup of tea to talk about why he always plays the thug, conversations with Martin Scorsese and how even future mob bosses can have a good sense of humour.

INTERVIEW BY KATE HANRATTY You are known as one of the most hardworking actors out there, appearing in countless films, TV shows and even music videos. If you had to pinpoint just one role which would you say has been your favourite? I would say Combo from This is England has been my favourite role. It was a role which I really immersed myself in, it was a very passionate project and very close to me. Working with Shane Meadows I got to create a character that was very complex. Combo wasn’t just a racist, he was a very confused character and came from a hard background as a child. I would say I learnt more on that job than on any other to be honest. I realised that I could actually act. I also learnt a lot from little Thomas Turgoose about being real and in the moment as an actor. It was an absolute joy to do This is England and I still speak to Thomas Turgoose a lot now, he calls me and

my wife granddad and grandma. You are known for playing ‘Thug with a heart’ characters who could be dismissed as stereotypical thugs but then manage to show that even they have a side that people can relate to. Would you say you are drawn to these characters? I don’t know about thug with a heart, (laughs) I play interesting characters. I try to play characters which challenge me, characters I want the audience to like, but then question themselves why they like them. I was in an episode of Bad Cop recently and wanted to play a character with absolutely no redeeming features. I wanted the audience to hate him instantly which I think worked, even my own mum said she was happy when I eventually got shot in that one. Martin Scorsese has cast you twice in Gangs of New York back in 2002 and more recently in hit HBO TV series Boardwalk Empire. What is Martin Scorsese like to work with and is it true he has dubbed you his British Joe Peschi? Yes, he has called me that (laughs) and he is absolutely brilliant to work with. When Boardwalk Empire came around I was at home and I got a phone call that goes (adopts a New York accent): “Hey, How ya

doin. You home from work? I was like “Yeah, yeah.” And then he says: “So you wanna play Al Capone?” I was like “Yeah ok sound!” Three weeks later I was on a plane to New York to film the series. What was it like pretending to be Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire? Great fun actually. Al Capone is such an iconic figure and he has been played by some fantastic actors. But where we are trying to do something different is playing him from when he was young. We wanted to show that he was an alright kid at one point. I know that he was a psychopath and a sociopath in many respects, but I do actually quite like him, he’s a funny guy. We wanted to put across his sense of humour, show the humanity to him and show him with his wife and kids at home. Obviously there is a long way to go before he becomes the iconic Al Capone figure that we all know and the person that he eventually was, so we get to show the journey. What is your favourite thing about your hometown of Liverpool? The people. When I’m not working I try to get up here as much as I can, I’m always home to see my friends, family and for the kids to see their Nan and Grandad.

The festival aims to bring together the culture of jazz bars and concerts all under one roof. “There will be cutting-edge new British Jazz with a lot of instrumental virtuosic playing and impressive musicianship but still set within an accessible format,” says Neil. “We pick artists that don’t always fit into simple genres and so alongside recognisable elements of jazz there will be fusions with rock, electronic music, reggae and merengue.” International acts booked as part of the festival include Courtney Pine, a world renowned saxophonist who recently featured on ‘Later ... with Jools Holland’ on BBC2 and Mercury Music Prize nominated Roller Trio. Back at the restaurant, meals thoroughly enjoyed, benedict
