BUYERS RUSH TO COMPLETE BEFORE STAMP DUTY HOLIDAY ENDS  First-time buyers are facing a rush to complete house purchases before the stamp duty break ends on the 24 March.

The stamp duty holiday had meant first-time buyers buying a property between £125,000 and £250,000 were exempt from the 1% tax. Elaine Taylor, regional sales manager for Lovell in the North West says, “We have seen a flurry of purchasers in recent weeks and this is in part due to the fact the stamp duty holiday for first time buyers is coming to an end. “Certainly in the North West

the stamp duty holiday has helped many first time buyers because it’s one less cost for them to pay.” Chancellor George Osborne's Autumn Statement claimed that the tax relief failed to get more people on the property ladder. The government said it is instead prioritising more effective measures which provide better value for money. One of these new measures is the recently announced NewBuy mortgage guarantee scheme, which will enable homebuyers to secure a 95 per cent mortgage. “It’s vital that lenders are onboard with these schemes and

we would welcome any further government action to encourage lenders to relax their criteria so more people can get a mortgage and step onto the property ladder,” says Elaine. David Robinson, assistant manager at Riverside Home Ownership says some schemes to help first-time buyers are not being promoted widely enough. He says: “As well as ongoing financial help, there are lots of schemes available. Sometimes buyers just aren’t aware that there is help available.” Buyers can avoid stamp duty if they purchase a property for less than £125,000. Your Move 41

Gleeson launches ‘fantastic five’ schemes for buyers  Would-be buyers in Liverpool have more options than ever when getting onto housing ladder following the launch of Gleeson Homes ‘Fantastic Five’ range.

The Citywide Landlord Accreditation Safety Scheme (CLASS) is a voluntary accreditation scheme that recognises private landlords who offer quality rented properties and treat tenants fairly. The scheme aims to help landlords operate successful businesses, provide tenants with decent and safe living conditions and reduce the need for intervention from local authorities. CLASS is free to join and landlords wanting to become members can apply for accreditation via a selfcertification process. The ‘Luxury Girls Night In‘ was hosted by the Liverpool City Fundraising Committee of The North West Cancer Research Fund, as part of their O-Very campaign, which aims to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. Guests who attended were treated to makeovers by So Coco Rouge, beauty treatments from Debenhams Beauty Hall, manicures from O.P.I Nailcare, a burlesque performance from Millie Dollar and gourmet midnight feasts. A boudoir style pop-up studio was created by fashion photographer Matt Ford, who snapped partygoers in their PJ’s throughout the evening. The event raised over £3000 for North West Cancer Research Fund.

t’s been a mad year for The Maccabees, with their third album Given To The Wild the culmination of two years of writing and recording. The result is a sprawling masterpiece of distorted pop, psychedelia and soulful guitar - and rave reviews. We talk to guitarist Hugo White on the band’s latest album.

You’ve just finished touring, how was it? I’m just in London today. I came back yesterday from the UK tour, so we’ve had a very busy and hectic time and now we’ve got a couple of days off which is nice. From the start of this year since the record came out it’s been nonstop - but that’s the way we want it.

Is it a departure from your earlier albums? We usually write as a collaboration. In the past we’ve always written together in a room and this time we decided the way we were going to do this one was to allow everyone to have a bit more space to write on their own. We did that for four months, individually until people started having ideas and recording stuff and sending emails of what we’d done. When someone liked something we worked on it and it gradually built like that until we decided we needed to all be there, all the time and work on it. That’s how it evolved. I think it’s a more patient album than the previous album Wall of Arms, and for me it

So not that many direct things influenced us, we listened to a lot of different stuff and in quite a nice way there aren’t that many influences on this record. How did The Maccabees get together? We knew each other from living in the same area in London. Orlando was Felix’s friend’s older brother, he was writing songs so we started the band like that and I was in school with Rupert. Felix joined later on but it very naturally fell together. What are you excited about this year? Festivals are going to be a big thing for us this year. We’ve just been confirmed for Benicassim, and others which aren’t announced yet but a lot of exciting things. We’re doing a show at Alexandra Palace in London which is the biggest show we will have done with 10,000 people, that’s a scary prospect.  Given To The Wild is out now.

What’s the reaction been like to your new album, Given To The Wild? I think it’s great. It is a record that we’re more proud of than anything else we’ve done. We really pushed ourselves. We didn’t make it easy for ourselves to make this record and we’re really happy with it. Hearing people say they like the record is a great thing for us; to have a good reaction to it, it feels like a step on in terms of the band, that is a big bonus.

Third album, Given to the Wild

feels like a big leap forward. The album required a lot of attention, musically, in order to create these soundscapes, so that was quite a different way of approaching it. Does that mean you were banned from seeing each other? Off limits a little bit. But more like you didn’t feel like you had to include everyone and it was quite nice, because if you’re always together you go through arguments. So, it was nice to have a bit of time where you didn’t have to argue your case to begin with, you could do exactly what you wanted and then present it and then argue your case. What’s your favourite song on the album? The last song on the record, Grew up at Midnight. I wrote the lyrics and that was quite nice to have in but generally, it has almost become quite a blur of who did what. What are your influences? It’s difficult to say any one band or individual, for example David Bowie was more influential in terms of listening to records that exist in their own place and figuring out how to translate your own way of doing those things to make the record live in its own space.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? They chose the name by flicking through the Bible. They came across the story of The Maccabees, Jewish rebels who fought against Greek rule and established Jewish independence in the second century BC. As soon as they saw the name, they knew that was it although they’ve insisted that they’re not religious.

T

he Pioneer stands out amongst the other eateries on Liverpool road, with the bar and brasserie’s wide windows and dark awnings giving it an unmistakably upmarket feel. Brasserie is the French word for a relaxed and upscale restaurant and in this case the word certainly fits. Inside the Pioneer the interiors are bright and airy and decorated in sumptuous cream and gold. Gorgeous gold lighting features highlight the restaurant area making it the perfect place to enjoy a spot of lunch and conversation. Meeting with Kevin Scott, managing director of Loc8 estate agents for lunch we were won over by the varied menu and chic surroundings. Kevin opted for a light chicken caesar salad and the Thai green fishcakes while I chose the chicken carbonara from the lunch menu. As is common nowadays the topic of conversation turns to the recession. “The recession is over now, it’s gone,” says Kevin. “Yes the housing market has changed. Obviously things have happened to the market, for example access to funding is different now, people can’t access the money to get a mortgage like they used to. “But people will always move, people will always need somewhere to live and they will always need guidance and help throughout that process.” Kevin says the lettings market is very positive at the moment. “In the UK we are moving towards a more European housing model where people rent rather than buy,” he adds. Kevin set up Loc8 estate and letting agents in 2006 after ten years of working in the industry for big names such as Black Horse and Countrywide. “I stopped and thought these guys are making good money. Why don’t I do this myself?” he says. From here Loc8 was born with

its main offices based in Maghull. Having worked all over the country Kevin knew that he wanted to come back to Liverpool to set up. “Liverpool is where my heart is,” he says. For Kevin, where Loc8 differs from other estate agents is in its approach to customer service. “Good agents who have come through the recession are those who focus on good customer service,” he says. Loc8’s team of 15 is trained across the board in selling, valuing and viewing so there is never the situation where a customer speaks to a team-

member who doesn’t have experience in the field they are talking about. With the Global Entrepreneurship Congress arriving in Liverpool this month I asked Kevin, from his own experience, what advice could he offer to young entrepreneurs in the city. “There has been a lot of negativity in the press,” he says. “Ignore everything you see on the TV and in the newspapers, just go for it. Businesses that fail do so because there’s no plan, no real vision and their heart is not in it. You must have a plan in place and you must work towards it.” The caesar salad with bacon, anchovies and croutons is, in Kevin’s words, “lovely, really light but still tasty.” The Thai green fish cakes looked fantastic, a vibrant shade

of orange on a bed of greens with a chilli jam sauce. My choice of the chicken carbonara was a good one, rich and creamy with plenty of chicken, wild mushrooms and pancetta to contend with. The portion size was also very generous. So what is next for Loc8? Kevin tells me the company is looking at opening a base on Allerton Road and in the future would like to think about a regional centre, perhaps in Manchester or Preston. And of course he will be popping into the Pioneer again in the meantime thanks to the varied menu, good food and great service. SPRING INTO STYLE ashion lovers and local celebrities gathered at the Metquarter for charity fashion show ‘Spring into Style’, hosted by Hill Dickinson in aid of The Fairbridge programme. Presenting the catwalk show was Hollyoaks’ Gemma Merna and celebrity hairdresser Herbert as the audience got a peek at the latest spring/summer 2012 collections. After the glamorous event revellers made their way to Kingdom for an exclusive after party where the cocktails were flowing. Sir Michael Bibby, chairman of The Prince’s Trust Merseyside Committee, said: “I am very grateful to the huge amount of support from businesses in Merseyside which helps us to improve the lives of young people.” The Fairbridge Programme is part of youth charity The Prince’s Trust and helps to change young lives. It gives practical and financial support, developing key workplace skills such as confidence and motivation and has so far helped 650,000 young people.
