The acid test of whether something is worth taking is whether you are prepared to pay good money to have it transported. Nine out of ten times people decide it’s not worth the expense, says Chrissy. Decluttering takes effort, no two ways about it. The only solution is to take a deep breath and plunge in. Begin methodically in the least used places – and the easiest to declutter - like the loft, cellar, garage or shed, advises Chrissy. Seeing those tasks accomplished spurs you on to tackle the more difficult living areas. In each space she labels three bags or boxes ‘rubbish’, ‘charity’ and ‘to sell’. At the end of a decluttering session she advises taking the bags out of the house to discourage moments of weakness. The key to staying sufficiently ruthless is to keep a clear vision of your new life in your new home. “Will you really use that bread maker that has been in
the cupboard for eight years? Do you want to take up painting again? “You should only keep something if it’s needed for practical reasons or is really beautiful,” says Chrissy. But she concedes some items that are neither useful nor beautiful prove impossible to throw out. Dog-eared postcards, childhood toys and mum’s old teapots have a habit of following us from house to house. To keep these to a strict minimum Chrissy suggests allocating one plastic storage ‘Memory Box’ to each person. “This is a trick which works really well with children’s stuff, which can get out of control,” she says. “Another way to keep the number of sentimental items down is to photograph them and create an album of the pictures. These are usually just as good as the actual items in triggering memories, and will take up a fraction of the space,” she adds. It’s not just youngsters’

Now is the time, Chrissy suggests, to invite the family over to sort through their own stuff. She says: “Make it a fun afternoon where you share memories, but also be firm that nothing of theirs will be going with you – they can take what they want of theirs to their own homes now.” It can be easy to become discouraged at the scale of the task. Liverpool’s Big Society pull-out Following the fanfare of last year’s unveiling of the Big Society, David Cameron was dealt his first big blow after Liverpool withdrew from the vanguard. The city council pulled its support claiming the Prime Minister’s cuts seriously undermined the ability of community organisations to improve the quality of life of residents. David Cameron’s pet project was unveiled in Liverpool last summer as one of four pilot areas. In the sensational letter to Mr Cameron, council leader Joe Anderson wrote: “The government has failed to deliver a single change that we have requested, which has severely hampered many parts of our programme.” The letter said the loss of over £100million of Area Based Grants to Liverpool has put many organisations’ survival at risk. Liverpool also faces a huge £141million reduction in council
spending over the next two years. 1,500 council workers are likely to be made redundant and up to 500 jobs will be lost in the voluntary sector. Concluding the letter, Cllr Joe Anderson wrote: “How can the City Council support the Big Society and its aim to help communities do more for themselves when we will have to cut the lifeline to hundreds of these vital and worthwhile groups?” David Cameron hit back at Prime Minister’s Questions by claiming that the move was “politically motivated”. He said: “The cuts will mean that, by 2013, Liverpool council will go back to the level of grant it received in 2009, so what we are seeing is politically motivated moves by Labour councils.” The Big Society scheme helps community groups run post offices, libraries, transport services and shape housing projects.

LIVERPOOL’S FIRST 5-STAR HOSTEL A 5-star hostel is set to open in the heart of Liverpool’s Beatles quarter. Budget hotel chain, Starboard Hotels, hopes to secure permission to open the luxury 240-bed hostel on the site of the former Wade Smith clothing store on Mathew Street.

Lucy Hodder, PA for a property company, bought a studio apartment at One Park West, in the centre of the Liverpool One development, a few weeks ago. She bought the apartment from King Sturge for £110,000.
I’m a city girl and as a first time buyer I wanted to stay central. I didn’t want to leave the city and buy a house, but when I saw what I could do with the space it was perfect. I wanted to make the interior design very contemporary. The wallpaper is from B&Q and matches the furnishings of black with gold trimmings, which makes it very warm and cosy. Because I’m in such a confined place I didn’t want to make it massively themed. I have enough space for everything from a dining table to a computer study area.
I chose One Park West because of location. In the past, I’ve lived outside of the city but with the Liverpool One development I wanted to be in the thick of it. It’s so handy for everything, the bars and shops. The development has a 24-hour concierge so it’s really safe and because I’m on my own it’s a major factor. I needed to maximise the space with it being a studio and this was the best layout with the sofa angled away from the kitchen. My kitchen is in the living area so I didn’t want to be looking at it when I’m on the sofa; it’s taking a bit of adjusting having the bed in the living area. The mirrors also open up the space.

It is different not having a separate bedroom but everything else outweighs it. The studio is one of the bigger ones that were available which is why I went for it. The kitchen is a good size with a small dishwasher and fridge/freezer; It’s convenient and functional for what I need. A lot of studios in other developments only have showers but I’m a bath person and really needed that so I am really happy it has a shower and bath. The shower is a raindrop power shower which is lovely.

INTERVIEW BY DINA KARIM You’re in Liverpool this week doing a show that toured successfully last year, are you excited about visiting the city? Well, there’s a lot of fried foods in Liverpool. When you get off the train all you can smell is fried foods, but I like fried foods. I’m not really looking forward to the show as I don’t like getting out, I would rather stay in and eat Magnums right out of the box - I love the way they all melt in the box. The bigwigs are making me go and do more of these shows. Apparently because loads of people came to the first lot. I'm gutted coz I've just bought a video player and I've got loads of things to watch that I got off the telly, like Crimewatch. I’ve also got a copy of Deathwish with Charles Bronson, that I found in the Hospice Shop. So, how did you even end up doing this tour? My van got blown, innit, I know it was my brother though. But I insured it which I’ve put in an investment; I’ve bought an elephant tusk from ebay for three grand but apparently it’s only worth fifty quid. You had never been on TV before 42 Your Move
Shooting Stars, do you not like being on TV? I was looking to be on the telly on Dragon’s Den, they’re mental. I was going to show my egg chucker. You know, some hardboiled eggs and a catapult and you know, you chuck ‘em. So I was doing my burger vanning and Mortimer gave me this award, which was long overdue in my opinion, and then we was talking and he said ‘come on the telly’, and I said ‘no’. Angelos Epithemiou is the alter ego of Renton Skinner, a comedian and member of the popular British five-man sketch troupe Dutch Elm Conservatoire. He has appeared in numerous TV comedies. He appeared as Angelos on series six of Shooting Stars as a permanent member of Team B, replacing Johnny Vegas, and now takes up the role of score-keeper in the absence of George Dawes in series seven. PLANNING FEES We are starting to plan a project for the summer. We want to add an extension to our property, and with the extra space it would provide, change the interior layout to give us the family home we have always dreamed about. We are nervous about employing the services of an architect. What can we expect from them and could you give us an idea on how fees are calculated? A good architect should be able to respond to the brief you give them. So now is the time for you to make decisions as to exactly what you require and what your total budget is. All architects will have a portfolio of work, this will give you an indication of their style and if they have experience on similar projects to the one that you are intending. There are a number of ways to calculate the fee structure, traditionally the fees are a percentage of the total building costs, but now they can also charge a fixed fee, or by the hour. As the project will be divided into different work stages it is possible, especially on smaller projects to discuss hiring an architect up to a certain point then running the project yourself.
We live in an older house which has high ceilings. The ceiling in the family bathroom is particularly high, we are thinking about re-tiling this room as the tiles which we have at the moment are a natural marble effect, which we feel is making the room look clinical and cold. If you had to design a problem bathroom like this, how would you tackle the tiling? Most people would be so jealous of your high ceilings! I think the solution here is to embrace the height and enjoy the space. If I was planning a project like yours, I would be tempted or at least investigate the option of having a feature wall. I think feature walls work particularly well in older houses with high ceilings as they add a focal point to a large space. The wall you pick also has to be the right one, and in bathrooms it is easier as the wall should define a space, such as the wall behind the bath or the two walls inside the shower enclosure. Once you have decided on which wall to use, think of it as providing an opportunity for you to add contrasting texture and colours into your bathroom. You could use a combination of wood and tiles, stone and brick or for the ultimate splash of colour and pictorial image you could have fun with a photographic image which could be printed onto ceramic tiles. www.digitalceramics.co.uk Your Move 45

A Collector’s Eye: Cranach to Pissarro features 60 works spanning five centuries which have been loaned to the Walker Art Gallery by a private collector. Images range from tender 15th century devotional images to 19th century French Impressionist landscapes. The exhibition features Old Masters like Rubens, El Greco and Delacroix, and Impressionists like Pissarro and Sisley. The paintings form part of the Schorr Collection, assembled by collector David J Lewis for his family.

DINA KARIM HAS LUNCH WITH.... Ian Murray, director of C & D Properties t has been five months since C & D Properties relocated to its city centre location and business is looking good. I met director Ian Murray over a quick lunch at The Olive Press, which has just come under new management, to talk about what the letting agents has been up to lately. “I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how quickly things have picked up. I thought it would

It’s an obligation to the landlords, putting as much as you can on promoting the property. I don’t think there’s enough agents out there doing it.” The restaurant we choose for
flavours, commented: “The beef is really nice, nice and thin, which you don’t often get, some places do carpaccio too thick which is wrong - this is delicious.” As with all agents, the conversation quickly turns to the state of the lettings and sales market in the city, after all they are well placed to see the trends before anyone else. For 2011 the lettings market still looks strong with no sign of slowing down; however, how quickly a property is let depends on who is managing it. And this is where Ian excels. “Our official hours are 8.45 to 5.15 but we do out of office hours
and on a Saturday it’s our busiest day. It is fairly common to hear about agents who don’t turn up to showings with no phone call or anything - if anyone at C & D did that they would be looking for another job.” The main dishes arrive looking as lovely as the starter. The butternut squash ravioli with blue cheese and sage butter is the best dish Ian has had in the restaurant, and my tagliatelle with mushroom and spinach was satisfying. The Olive Press is quite an institution on Castle Street but that is all soon to change following the recent purchase of the restaurant by Living Ventures, the original owners of the Living Room. Although
plans include turning it into a grill and expanding the restaurant space, I was very happy to hear they were retaining the staff as they were the highlight of the lunch. The future for C & D Properties lies in commercial property, as they look to expand their portfolio this year. For Ian the new office is still the big thing. “While we do embrace the technological side, it is still a people business. People buy into people. If you look after people and get a good reputation then that’s good business practice.” It is little wonder landlords and tenants are flocking to C & D Properties, looking for a personal touch in what is a very competitive business.
