I have bought a flat to rent out but I don't know where to start when it comes to presenting it, charging rent and finding tenants! What should I do and how could a letting agent help me?

I am selling my home through an agent but have become unhappy with the service I have received. How easy/difficult will it be for me to change agents and will it be expensive?

S. Thomas, L16

K. Scott, L25

A really good place to start would be to arrange to meet two or three letting agents at the apartment, in order to establish some advice on what price you could expect to achieve on the apartment and any specific advice they would give to you. They may advise on furnishings required and how to present the property to show it at its best. You will also need to chat to them about what service you require from them and how involved you want to be in the process. Agents will offer a Tenant Find Service through to a fully managed package, costs vary. If you have just purchased the apartment, I would recommend that you ask an agent to fully manage the property for at least the first tenancy you have, then you can assess how involved you wish to be going forward.

Firstly you will need to check if you are tied in with your current agents, or if the initial agency period has expired. Most agents now will tie you in for around 16 weeks. If you want to change agents during this period then you will incur costs. If this period has expired then you will be free to change agents, subject to giving them notice. Again, for most agents it is 14 days written notice that is requested to end any agreement. During this time you are free to obtain valuations from other agents and you can put the wheels in motion for moving to your new agent. You will already have an energy performance certificate and these are valid for 10 years, so this can be used by your new agent. There should be no further costs, until you actually sell the property.

Q A

Q A

I’m moving out of my rented flat. Since giving notice to my landlord he’s arranged for numerous potential tenants to view the property which has been quite a hassle as it’s not always been convenient. As it’s not in my tenancy agreement that I have to agree to this can I refuse visits? Or at least demand they are at times that are more suitable?

Q

G. Clarke, L6 In most tenancy agreements, it will stipulate that viewings can be conducted within the final month of your tenancy once you have given notice to your landlord. However, viewings arranged by the agent or landlord should be confirmed with yourself first and reasonable notice should be given. This is usually 24 hours or more. If the landlord is trying to arrange an appointment that is inconvenient for you, you can refuse them access. I would always recommend suggesting a more convenient time rather than just refusing altogether. Cooperation between you and the agent or landlord and any arrangements that are made need to be fair to both parties. If you do wish to refuse entry for all viewings, the agent/landlord cannot legally enter the property; however, this lack of cooperation may reflect in your landlord reference should you wish to rent again.

City agent appointed to Georgian Quarter homes

Philharmonic Rise

Liverpool agent City Residential has been appointed to market 23 Georgian townhouses, after planning permission was granted to convert them from former student accommodation into high specification homes. The houses, located on Falkner Street and Catharine Street, will be redeveloped by Hollinwood Homes amid rising demand from buyers for city centre properties. The new homes have been named ‘Philharmonic Rise’ because of their proximity

to Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall, and the plans aim to modernise the interiors while retaining the original characteristics on the outside. Sian Pitt, head of marketing and customer services for Hollinwood Homes, says: “We are delighted to have appointed City Residential as our chosen agent. Their local knowledge and expertise has been vital to ensuring our plans for the site meet the demands of potential buyers.” City Residential will make the homes available to reserve off-plan prior to the

refurbishments being completed, and director Phil Hartley-Chambers says: “We are thrilled to have been appointed as the chosen sales agent for this stunning project by Hollinwood Homes; they are renowned for building and redeveloping high quality properties and have superb plans to make the houses on Falkner and Catharine Street the heart of the Georgian Quarter.” For more information contact City Residential on 0151 231 6100.

he final five homes in a new development in Norris Green are set to go on sale under the Help to Buy scheme, says developer Countryside.

A total of 43 new homes have been built at the NGV Liverpool site on Stalisfield Avenue in the north of the city, and the final five available properties are priced from £123,000. The three and four-bedroom homes are available under the government’s Help to Buy initiative, which allows buyers to place a 5% deposit with the help of a 20% government equity loan. The announcement marks the end of the first stage of the development three years in to the project. Planning is now underway for a second stage, which will be launched later in 2014, according to Peter Vella, regional sales and marketing director at Countryside. He says: “NGV has led the home buying market in Liverpool since we launched in 2011 and it is a really exciting time as we release the final homes in our current phase and prepare for the launch of our new phase later this year.” Countryside has opened a show home for the final five properties. HOMES UNDER THE HAMMER AT LATEST AUCTION A former day centre and a block of 14 apartments near to Liverpool’s China Town are among the stars of the next Sutton Kersh property auction. The auctioneer will offer 113 lots at its latest auction on 4 June at the Liverpool City Centre Marriott Hotel, where it expects to pass £6.9 million in revenue in 2014 with a varied collection of properties for potential buyers. A three-storey semi-detached former day centre on South Drive is offered with a guide price of up to £220,000 and has the potential to become a family home, subject to planning permission. Other notable lots include a mixed-use development on Sankey Street, which boasts 14 part-let apartments and three retail units and could generate £161,120 for an investor when fully let. The development comes with a guide price of £1.5 million. Other lots include two pubs, the former Embassy bingo hall in Wallasey and residential properties throughout Merseyside. Cathy Holt, auction manageress at Sutton Kersh, says: ‘We have attracted another large and varied catalogue with all categories of stock well represented and at guide prices to suit all budgets, starting from nil reserve.” The auction begins at 12 noon and the catalogue is available to view at www.suttonkersh.co.uk/auctions-property 56 Your Move

Early demand for Riverside’s over 55s scheme

Joseph Williams Mews

Around 80 potential buyers have already joined the waiting list for a new south Liverpool development, with the launch still to take place. Joseph Williams Mews, a £9.1 million development for over 55s by Riverside Home Ownership, is currently being built opposite Belle Vale Shopping Centre. According to the developer, the site will feature 14 homes available through shared ownership and 56 affordable rental properties once it is complete, and the first show home will be unveiled early this summer. Although potential purchasers will have to wait until the show home is launched to make reservations, early demand for the scheme has been welcomed by Riverside. Catherine Corkish, sales and new business negotiator at Riverside Home Ownership, says: “We are very pleased with the popularity of Joseph Williams Mews, with a healthy waiting list already established – and that

is without any advertising. I am looking forward to throwing open the doors of our show home in the summer when potential purchasers will get their first view of this exciting development.” For more information on the development, call Riverside Home Ownership on 0151 282 8501.

The Mayor and Mayoress with Barry Fawcett and the Gleeson Team

T

he Mayor and Mayoress of Knowsley have officially opened new show homes at a Huyton development, after visiting the completed properties for the first time. Gleeson Homes welcomed the Mayor and Mayoress, councillors Brian and Christina O’Hare, and

head of housing and economic development for Knowsley Council, Barry Fawcett, to take a look around the Knowsley Lane development and view the three unveiled show homes. The site, which comprises two, three and four-bedroom properties, was officially opened back in September 2013 by Cllr Brian O’Hare.

He says: “It’s wonderful to see these areas of land transformed into attractive new homes which will appeal to local buyers and will, no doubt, attract new people to our community. I am amazed at the size and quality of the new homes.” Gleeson Homes is offering the properties for sale under the government’s Help to Buy scheme

from £96,995. Linda Matura, sales manager for Gleeson Homes, adds: “Our homes at Knowsley Lane are designed and priced to suit local people.” The new show homes are open between 10am and 5pm every day. For more information visit www.gleeson-homes.co.uk

Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) has secured permission and has appointed contractors HMS Ltd and Penny Lane Builders to begin work on the renovations as part of a wider £14 million scheme. In total 96 homes will be developed on the site as part of the Liverpool City Council scheme, including properties on Beaconsfield Street, Cairns Street, Ducie Street and Jermyn Street. Community Land Trust will build 10 homes, Northern Alliance Co-operative will build five and Plus Dane Group will deliver the remaining 27. Maggi Howard, director of assets and enterprise at LMH, says: “Receiving planning consent, appointing contractors and starting on-site is all great news for residents and the local Granby community. Residents have waited long enough to get to this point and we are pressing ahead at speed to meet the demand for highquality affordable housing in Granby.” In 2013 a completed home in the area sold for £1 under the council’s Home for a Pound scheme and more are expected to be made available this year.

Commercial, will also be among the exhibitors as the event examines the challenges that face towns and cities in terms of economic development and neighbourhood renewal. Regen 2014 is one of more than 100 business events taking place throughout June and July as part of the IFB, and founder and organiser Andrew Clark says: “The two-day conference is shaping up really well

and we are very pleased with both the quality of the speaker programme that we have put together and the number and high calibre of exhibitors who have taken stands at the exhibition.” For more information about Regen 2014, and how to take part, email andrew.clark@regen2014.com

GETTING TO KNOW THE PROPERTY PROFESSIONALS

5

MINUTES WITH...

MIKE CARTER

head of conveyancing, Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors

What does your job entail? As head of conveyancing, I am responsible for the management of the department together with handling a full caseload of residential and commercial matters. What’s your favourite thing about your job? Helping to alleviate some of the stress clients incur when they move house. It is always nice to receive a simple “thank you” from a client at the end of their matter. What’s your least favourite thing about your job? Emails. I love and loathe emails in equal measure. On the one hand, emails are a quick and easy way to communicate, but on the other I get inundated with emails every day. This morning I spent the first hour and a half just dealing with emails that came in overnight.

MY FIRST... ANDREW WEBB director, ARW Property Solutions CAR:

RECORD:

A 1985 blue Ford Escort. It was riddled with rust and completely unreliable.

Age eight - Michael Jackson, Bad. My music taste has since improved, but only slightly.

JOB:

HOUSE:

Before university I was a sales assistant in a ski and outdoor shop. I loved this and have fond memories.

We purchased our first house in Whiston over 10 years ago. Plans for minor redecoration turned into me having to replace the bathroom, replaster the entire house and damp proof it. It stood me in great stead for a career in property development.

HOLIDAY: This was either a surfing holiday in Woolacombe, a mountain bike holiday in the Alps, or a boys ski trip. As you can see I like the outdoors!

PET: A cat called Ringo. We were told it was a boy, turns out it was a girl, but the name stuck.

DAY IN THE LIFE OF... TIM LAMB residential surveyor, Pugh & Co Auctions 6:30AM

It’s always an early start and it always begins with coffee.

8:45AM

After a fairly lengthy commute, I’m organising my emails and agenda for the day. Auction house life is fast paced so my daily plans are crucial to ensure I stay adrift of the deadlines and targets!

9:00AM

A quick briefing with Kate (head of residential), then back on the road inspecting properties and liaising with clients.

11:00AM

Back to the office to prep today’s auction appraisals. There’s never a dull moment dealing with auction properties, you name it we’ve sold it!

12:00PM

Lunch is spent organising more emails, browsing industry news… and trying to avoid the office coffee run!

If you weren’t doing this job, what would you be doing? I’d be retired! Enjoying a stress free life – oh how I dream of that day.

1:00PM

With pre auction offers coming in, I spend the early afternoon negotiating between buyers and sellers to make the process hassle free for both sides.

3:00PM

With our print deadline looming the final tweaks take place for our national auction catalogue.

What are you going to be doing straight after this interview? Sad but true – checking emails.

4:30PM

Quick team catch up and a run through priorities for the week. After a fast paced day it’s good to have a pow wow over a cup of tea!

4:45PM

My day ends signing off any tasks still left on my schedule. Ticking it all off, ready to start another one tomorrow!

GUIDE TO...

The summer is approaching and that means holidays and trips away from your home. However, it could also mean something else – opportunist burglars. Thankfully, by taking the correct steps to protecting your home you can have a worry-free break from the daily grind, safe in the knowledge your house and possessions are under lock and key.

PREFER TO DETER The first step is to make your home as unattractive to burglars as possible and fit a strong lock system. All locks must have the ‘CE marking’ on them, which is mandatory in the UK. However, keep an eye out for the British Standards Institute’s BSI Kitemark, which is a voluntary quality mark for locks that go over and above standard requirements. Tess Batley-Moss, eCommerce business development manager at Solon Security, says: “The key is to prepare your house before you go away. You should use things that help make your home look as lived in as possible. Home security devices with timer switches, such as lamps that turn on at specific times of the day, or an LED device that looks like a television is on in the room, can be effective options.”

deter burglars. It is important to keep a house alarm maintained so that neighbours do not think it is simply malfunctioning when it is legitimately set off. Luckily, with modern technology, making a lot of noise is not the only function alarms now offer. The ‘bells only’ alarm is the standard alarm option but you can pay a little more to have a police response alarm fitted, which will notify police when an alarm is triggered. Similarly, a speech dialler alarm will notify a phone number of your choosing, allowing you to contact the relevant authorities if necessary. When combined with new technology such as a webcam viewable on a smartphone or tablet device, this can allow you to know what’s happening at home even if you’re on the other side of the world.

SOUND THE ALARM

TAG AND TRACE

Making a racket is probably the easiest way to deter a potential thief, and a blinking alarm box can often be enough to

If your security measures have failed and your house has been broken into, there are ways you can increase the chances of

tracking down your possessions. For example, electronic devices such as computers and phones, as well as bicycles and other larger items, can be tagged electronically and traced. Using a UV pen marker to write your house number and postcode on items can help police track them down. According to Merseyside Police’s advice: “For a permanent solution consider engraving, etching or a tracer solution such as Smartwater or SelectaDNA which contains a unique code. Photographing high value items such as jewellery is also advisable, but keep the photographs in a safe place and not stored on your camera or computer.” When it comes to identifying the culprit, CCTV can also be useful. As well as acting as a deterrent it can also catch the criminals in the act. However, it is important to check if you need to obtain planning permission and notify your neighbours before installing any security devices. Your Move 65

It’s been a busy 2014 so far for Liverpool band, BIRD. The four-piece not only performed at the BBC 6 Music Festival and Liverpool Sound City, but a supporting slot on the tour of cult musician Rodriguez saw them recently venture across Europe. On the eve of the release of their debut album, ‘MY FEAR AND ME’, band member Adele Emmas talks to Your Move about Bird’s dark sound, growing success and forthcoming plans.

TALENT

INTERVIEW BY NATASHA YOUNG

With this album it’s been a long road but we’ve really found our feet in terms of our sound.

How was Bird formed? The band has been through various different members but I’d say, as it stands today, we’ve been together for a year and a half. Me and drummer Alexis [Samata] have known each other for years and we were in previous bands when we were younger. They were all pretty terrible! Then we got Sian [Williams] in on guitar, and most recently we got Christian [Sandford] in on bass. Your sound is often considered to be dark. Is that how you would you describe it? It’s quite hard to describe us really. I know people always try and put us in a genre but we’re a lot of different things. The words that crop up a lot are ‘ethereal’ and ‘dark’. Some have also said ‘dark pop’ and even ‘doom pop’, which is quite unusual! Our music is quite ethereal and quite atmospheric. Who are your main influences as a band? We’ve got a wide variation of artists that we love, including people like Leonard Cohen – I’m a massive Leonard Cohen fan - and Kate Bush, and mutually we all love Joy Division and The Cure. Our drummer likes hip hop as well and we all really love Nirvana, Fugazi and PJ Harvey, so it can really range from grungy, gritty, heavy stuff to other lighter, beautiful, emotional stuff. You’re about to launch your first album. How long have you been working on it for and what can people expect? We were working on the album for eight or nine months and I think it’s different and a lot more progressed than our earlier stuff. In our first couple of EPs we were very much trying to find our feet and stumbling around in the dark a bit, not yet knowing who we were. With this album it’s been a long road but we’ve really found our feet in terms of our sound. There are lots of quite dark areas but light areas as well, for instance a piano-based track called ‘Blue’ at the end is something that the audience wouldn’t expect after listening to the whole album. I’m just hoping it’s an album that makes you feel something. That’s what we aim for as a band, we want people to relate to it. You recently toured with Rodriguez. How did that come about and what was it like? Our agent sent the tracks over to Rodriguez and his management one day and I think they just liked it. I guess you’d say he’s quite folky and almost a bit country at times, and our music is quite different but it ended up working really well. We got to play to the biggest audiences we’ve ever played to, the venues were absolutely massive and seated about 3,000 people, and all the nights were sold out so we went from playing small music venues in the UK to being launched into playing this huge venue in Warsaw, which was the biggest one. It was obviously very scary but it was amazing, it was definitely

a tour that we’re never going to forget. The UK’s great, don’t get me wrong, but to take the band out of the UK for people abroad to hear was great. I think the tour really made us grow as a band and become a lot closer as people because when you go on tour you go through a lot together, it’s a rollercoaster. There are always things that happen, like the van’s broken down or various obstacles that you’ve got to overcome, but you just pull together as a team. So was your recent Sound City gig seen as a homecoming after Europe? Sound City was great because we hadn’t played Liverpool since December last year, mainly because we were working on our album but also because we had new songs to develop so we wanted to distance ourselves for a bit until the album came out. We played in Liverpool Cathedral, which is such a beautiful venue, and it was great. We played all of our new album stuff and a lot of people came to see us which was really lovely. If felt nice to have that kind of reception and people seemed to really enjoy it. We got really nice comments after it. You’ve had a lot of support from national radio and music press. What impact has that been having? BBC Introducing has been a massive thing that’s really helped us branch out because it started with us having our music played on BBC Radio Merseyside by Dave Monks. From then the likes of BBC 6 Music caught on to it and then Radio 3 and Radio 1. Then we got invited a couple of months ago to play the BBC 6 Music Festival which was amazing, and we were playing the main stage with Haim and Damon Albarn. We just thought ‘what are we doing here? How have we managed this?’! It’s been really nice to have that support from radio because I don’t think we’re a massively radio band, we don’t write pop songs. There’s something in our stuff that is quite leftfield and almost experimental so it shows people really like diverse music. What are the band’s forthcoming plans? We’re going on a UK tour after the album launch, and then we’re just hoping to get on more similar support slots like the Rodriguez one with big bands where you’re guaranteed big audiences and you’re guaranteed to get your music to a wide range of people. We’ve already started writing little bits for the next album and in the practice room we’ve been jamming up little ideas. It’s nice to get back to writing again because we’ve been so busy recording for the past nine months, so we’re just looking forward to writing and progressing from there really. Bird will perform at the Kazimier on 23 May to launch their album, ‘My Fear and Me’. The album is released on 26 May. For more information log on to www.birdofficial.co.uk. Your Move 75

& Best for...

ALL YOU CAN EAT For a filling treat you can’t get much better than an all you can eat restaurant. There are plenty of buffet-style eateries in Liverpool offering everything from Chinese food to the finest South American steaks. Here are three of the best all you can eat restaurants in the city.

MEAT TREATS Viva Brazil, 36 Castle Street, L2 The vast Brazilian Churrascaria restaurant serves up 15 select cuts of meat and an extensive salad bar. Simply flag down a passing Passador meat carver and don’t stop until you have had enough. The meat is slow roasted over a charcoal barbeque to give it a signature crispy coating, while drinks include the popular Caipirinha cocktails.

THE BIG BREAKFAST Halfway House, Woolton Road, L16 Popular because of its family friendly and affordable carvery options and all you can eat ‘bottomless’ ice cream, this out-of-town pub also offers an all you can eat breakfast for just £3.99. Featuring all of the traditional aspects of a full English, but with unlimited supply, this is the heartiest breakfast you can find to start your day.

ORIENT EXPRESS Buffet Club, 23-25 Prescot Street, L7 Tucked away on Prescot Street, the Buffet Club is a modern, clean oriental buffet with a varied selection of dishes. While it is very much your standard buffet fare, the quality of the food and affordable prices ensure the Buffet Club is well worth a visit. Enjoy the food in the restaurant or pick up an innovative ‘Buffet Box’, which allows you to quickly fill it up and take away with you on a busy lunch break.

LUNYA

College Lane, L1 Lunya is situated in the centre of Liverpool ONE’s shopping district, however, take a step inside the Catalonian tapas bar and you could be in a hidden restaurant on a back street of Barcelona. My dinner date and I entered the restaurant via Lunya’s traditional deli where legs of ham and sticks of chorizo hang from the ceiling. There is a wellstocked cheese and meat counter, a huge selection of Spanish wines as well as culinary products perfect for gifts and presents. Once we managed to drag ourselves away from the deli, we made our way upstairs where we were met by the extremely welcoming restaurant manager, Carlos. Carlos had a proposition for us before he handed us a menu, either choose our own dishes or let him look after us and try his favourite dishes. Terra Alta region, which was beautiful. Lunya has an atmosphere that feels authentic. Often I feel tapas bars feel too ‘themed’, with too much of a conscious attempt to give the diner a Spanish experience, which often backfires and makes you feel like you’re dining on a cheap film set. This is not the case at Lunya. Yes, the décor is typically Spanish, however it still acknowledges its Liverpool location with items on the menu even reflecting this, including their signature fusion dish, Catalan Scouse (£6.25). Whilst we relaxed into our night and took in the restaurant’s vibes, Carlos brought over a dish of Kikones (£2.75), the very typical Spanish snack of fried and salted corn kernels, and some huge Andalucian olives (£3.75). A large board of Iberico ham (£14.95), which is freshly sliced downstairs in the deli, was next to arrive with a board of sheep’s milk cheese (£8.75). This selection of ham, cheese

and olives worked perfectly together! Over the night we tried a wide variety of Carlos’ favourite dishes and it turns out he has quite a few! The Pluma iberica (£7.95), pork from acorn fed Spanish pigs served with shallot puree, is sublime, however, my favourite was the beef steak pinchos (£6.65) with Piquillo pepper hummus, the steak was cooked perfectly and melted in the mouth. There are also some tasty vegetarian dishes on the menu and I extremely enjoyed the fried aubergine discs with a yoghurt and honey dip (£5.45) and spiced cauliflower and manchego frituras (£5.65). Lunya is one of those restaurants that can suit all occasions. Whether you’re looking for a pit stop during a long Liverpool ONE shopping trip, a place for your Grandma’s birthday or somewhere to propose (congratulations to the couple who got engaged next to us!), Lunya is the place to go. Pout with a Punch Illamasqua, Metquarter

Giancarlo Ricci, Bold Street Trading in Liverpool since 1971, Giancarlo Ricci is easily one of the most established men’s designer clothing stores in Liverpool. Despite opening only 18 months ago, their stand-alone shoe store, Ricci, is already renowned for stocking exclusive, original footwear, such as these Palladium boots (£55). Originally aircraft tire manufacturers, Palladium went on to make boots for the French Foreign Legion, before creating equally durable, classic footwear for the modern man. Subtly reminiscent of military fashion, they are as tough as their heritage, and stylish to boot.

(BELOW)

British make up brand Illamasqua seeks to celebrate courageous selfexpression, and their Liverpool shop, filled with monochrome mannequins, black walls and mirrored surfaces, is clearly testament to this. For those not quite brave enough for their amazing forest-green lipsticks and acid-yellow eye shadows, there is the new matte lip liquid (£18.50). Daring without scaring, it is long lasting, precise and as impossibly bold as the brand itself.

Cow & Co, Cleveland Square

The everdainty Cow & Co is like a tiny portion of the home you wish you had. Though only small, hours can be spent here, whether browsing their exclusively stocked magazines, having a cup of coffee and a pastry, or browsing their

beautiful selection of home wares and trinkets. We adore their functional and stylish new range of wooden utensils (from £3.50) which, as they aren’t available online, give you another great reason to pop in to the shop itself. Like you needed one.

Cricket, Cavern Walks Despite being tucked away in the Cavern Walks, true fashion fanatics can easily sniff out the high-end designers, from Louboutain to Gievancy, housed in Liverpool’s fantastic Cricket. Brand new in store is the marvellous new ‘No Fish No Nothing’ capsule collection from Kenzo; a series of striking, illustrative jumpers (£240-£560) created in partnership with the Blue Marine Foundation to warn against the ecological implications of over fishing, making this guilt-free designer shopping at its very best. With Brazilian-themed festivities already set to sweep the nation ahead of the forthcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup, this year’s Brazilica is shaping up to be the biggest yet. Liverpool has already enjoyed a taste of the city’s annual Brazilian festival and samba carnival, as organisers hosted performances and football events as part of the recent Sound City and Light Night lineups. However, from 11-19 July the main event will be in full swing. A jam-packed programme of film, visual arts, a Carnival Queen competition and Rio-style entertainment will take place throughout the week running up to the main carnival day on 19 July, when a spectacular parade will travel through the streets. This year, Brazilica also forms part of the cultural programme for the International Festival for Business (IFB), and Maeve Morris from the organisers Liverpool Carnival Company, says: “Brazilica has always attracted visitors from far and wide as well as local people and we think being a part of this exciting and prestigious festival for the city will attract even more of a diverse audience for us and in turn showcase Liverpool’s eclectic cultural offering to visitors and delegates.” For more information about this year’s Brazilica festival, visit www.brazilicafestival.com Your Move 89

ALBUM REVIEW BY PAUL DICKSON

People may know Ian Prowse from Amsterdam and Pele, and as the writer of ‘Does This Train Stop On Merseyside’, a favourite of the late John Peel. Amazingly, ‘Who Loves Ya Baby’ is Prowse’s first solo album - and what a debut it is!

FREE!

The opening track, ‘God And Man’, celebrates the Christening of his daughter and sets the tone for an album bristling with acoustic guitar riffs. The Latin American vibe of ‘I Did It for Love’ is followed by the standout ‘Lest We Forget’, which details the timely story of an ordinary lad who fought in the Great War. Meanwhile the moving ‘Murder of Charles Wooton’ comes complete with haunting violin and finger picking guitar. Encompassing colonialism, revolutionaries, racial

prejudice and parenthood, it is a remarkable album to listen to and enjoy.

My favourite with... NEON JUNGLE It’s been a busy year for rising girl band Neon Jungle, having followed up their debut single with three top 20 hits including ‘Braveheart’. The four-piece also toured with Jessie J, as well as joining the likes of Taylor Swift and Fall Out Boy to perform at lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret’s New York fashion show, with a global audience of 10 million people. In July the girls are set to release their debut album, along with a performance at Liverpool’s Echo Arena as part of the Radio City Summer Live 2014 concert, but band member Asami Zdrenka has taken time out to share her favourite things.

Favourite thing about Liverpool:

The people! As cringey and cheesy as it sounds, everyone is so lovely in Liverpool!

Favourite musician:

Oooo, favourite musician would have to be a collective and as a band Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chilli Peppers are amazing to me! They were the bands that made me get into music.

Favourite venue:

The Echo Arena is my favourite venue as we did our first ever arena gig there and everyone was so welcoming and it was amazing. We are also doing Radio City Live again there this summer.

Favourite moment in your career: Doing the Victoria's Secret fashion show in New York that was the first time we properly travelled together and did something that big on television.

Favourite film:

I have a few, including The Grinch, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Apocalypto and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Favourite album:

In Your Honor by Foo Fighters.

Favourite city:

Liverpool of course, but also Tokyo and Misawa in Japan where I was born.

Favourite book:

At the minute it has to be Gone by Michael Grant but it changes often as I always have a book to hand!
