The Everyday Impact of Halitosis

For people who have never experienced bad breath halitosis first-hand, the issue may seem small and inconsequential, but those who have grappled with the issue tend to relate that it can have a serious impact on psychological well-being and overall happiness. Many attributes go into the way we perceive ourselves; many of these are visual, and people may work out or seek style advice in an attempt to look their best. Others are internal, and working to improve one's knowledge, compassion, or other important traits can be a rewarding pursuit. While breath may not commonly figure into such equations, the presence of bad breath halitosis can put a damper on one's self-image, and can also make poor impressions on others.

The Mind's Role in Bad Breath People who suffer from halitosis may experience several psychological concerns, including sensitivity about their breath quality, self-isolation to prevent unwanted negative reactions from others, feelings of rejection, and lowered confidence and self-esteem. These issues can play an important part in the onset of depression and a lowered quality of life, and may be compounded if certain halitosis cures are tried unsuccessfully. The self-limiting nature that halitosis presents to some people may prevent the very sources of healing, such as talking with others or seeking professional help, that could alleviate these psychological symptoms. Halitosis can also create problems within relationships, whether in the business, the romantic, or the family sphere. Patients with bad breath halitosis may feel that they are unable to speak with or to get close to their loved ones, and anxiety over the reactions of professional colleagues, clients, and superiors can get in the way of one's work life. While many of these issues may be exaggerated within the minds of people affected by halitosis, they are not without a basis in reality, as some business contacts, family members, and personal friends may find bad breath off-putting enough to avoid or cut down on contact.

Bad Breath Sufferers Aren't Alone It is estimated that around half of all people experience worries over bad breath at some point in their lives. Though everyone has noticed bad breath in the morning to some degree, halitosis is

not quite as common –but its impact on happiness and well-being can be pronounced. Nearly all of those who suffer from halitosis restrict their social or other activities in one way or another, with a smaller percentage retreating entirely into isolation. When patients work towards understanding the causes of their halitosis, however, and remain open to the various treatments and regimes proposed, halitosis can be attacked and conquered –and quality of life can be freed from the restraints of bad breath.
