FATHER TONY In 2015, Reverend Anthony Adawu, lovingly known as Father Tony, became Mount Mercy’s first full-time chaplain in almost six years. As residential chaplain, his pastoral presence reinforces Mount Mercy’s Catholic tradition and Mercy charism through sharing of the Gospel, teaching, interaction, and collaboration with people of all faiths throughout the campus community. Father Tony is also an adjunct professor and serves as a liaison to Catholic parishes and schools in the area. Born and raised in Ghana, Father Tony completed his bachelor’s degree in sociology and study of religions, and earned a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language from the University of Ghana. He also completed studies of philosophy and theology at St. Paul’s Catholic Seminary and St. Peter’s Regional Seminary in Ghana. Father Tony was ordained in 2003, and served as seminary formator for St. Teresa’s Minor Seminary and as pastor for St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Elmina, Ghana. Upon arriving in the U.S. in 2007, Father Tony served the parishes of Glen Burnie, Maryland. He earned his PhD in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in second language education and culture from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 2016, Father Tony completed his second PhD, this time in practical theology from St. Thomas University in Florida, and began teaching in Mount Mercy’s religious studies and English as a second language education programs. Under Father Tony’s leadership, Mount Mercy began a Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults program and celebrates daily Mass and other Sacraments of the Church. Always seeking to increase student, staff, and alumni involvement, he also piloted Mount Mercy’s 2017 Collegiate Day of Prayer and leads a weekly 15forUs prayer meeting—leading the campus community in 15 minutes of prayer for students, the entire Mount Mercy family, and the world. With his global experience, education, and engaging personality, Father Tony brings a revitalized energy— not only to Mount Mercy, but to the broader community.
