All members were invited to attend the official cake cutting ceremony in the Humphries Road foyer at Mounties on Monday 2 April. MEMBERS’ PARTY FAMILY FUN DAY

A little party never hurt nobody! More than 500 patrons attended Mounties members birthday party on Monday 2 April. The day was filled with activities including kids’ entertainment, jumping castle, face painting and roving entertainers.

The New Harbord Diggers is Nearly Here The much anticipated the re-opening of our sister club on the Northern Beaches – Harbord Diggers – is merely a few weeks away. Once the Diggers’ doors swing open at the end of June, members and guests will be presented with a smorgasbord of new dining, entertainment and lifestyle options, with the Diggers’ legacy still beating at its heart. Its new dining precinct will tantalise tastebuds with three new restaurants – including authentic regional Italian cuisine; a haven for meat-eaters that will serve juicy cuts of meat, burgers and seafood; and a new café hotspot, DD Collective. In addition, the Diggers’ team is joining forces with Manly Wharf Hotel, bringing their expertise to the new Harbord Diggers Bar. What sets this new club apart is its intergenerational appeal. The Diggers will now be a home with the first residents of the club’s seniors living apartments (Watermark Freshwater) due to move in shortly.

Apart from the spectacular panoramic water views, the convenience of location and new dining options coupled with live entertainment and events; the precinct will also feature advanced early childhood education, accommodating up to 90 children aged between six weeks and six years old. Stage Two of the project, set to open late in 2019, will include the remainder of the Watermark Freshwater residences, as well as a new fitness facility and aquatic centre. 50 YEARS 50 years and still growing! The 2018 Netball season launched on April 7 at Woodward Park. Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller, GIANTS Netball player Jamie-Lee Price, Liverpool City Netball Association (LCNA) and several club dignitaries were present to witness the March Past.

This year, Mounties Netball Club took home the winning trophy and were declared the winners of the March Past. The club had one of its 9-year-old teams lead the players in the parade, dressed in past uniforms. The first uniform donned by the girls was a black and white check, three box pleat tunics over a yellow shirt, and an old gold box pleat over a black shirt. This progressed to a pleated black skirt teamed with a yellow shirt and black trim. In 2003, Mounties transitioned with the times and introduced a body suit in black and gold and updated in 2008 to incorporate the Mounties logo. In 2016 the club moved to the more modern netball dress and bike pants. Along with LCNA, Mounties Netball Club is celebrating 50 years of netball this year. In its first season in 1968, the club known as Mt Pritchard and Community Netball Club, had seven teams and played at Green Valley in the Southern

Districts Young Ladies Sports Association. In 1969 the club joined LCNA at Woodward Park. When Mounties Club rebranded in the early 2000’s, the Netball Club was then referred to as Mounties. Today the club continues to shoot for the stars with 28 teams participating in the competition. Mereana Peyroux, Mounties Junior Sports Person of the Year and one of the most promising netballers in the state, has been nominated for News Locals Local Sports Star. “Mounties netball is amazing; their encouragement and constant motivation has pushed me to heights I never thought possible. I am extremely thankful to them for their support, commitment and willingness to help me grow”, Mereana said. Kevin Ingram, Mounties Group President, said, “We are proud of our sporting accomplishments and proud of our athletes. From seasoned players, to those just starting out, sport is all about inclusiveness and team bonding. “Our Club has clearly evolved over the years but one thing that has remained constant, is our commitment to sport”, he said.

Beef & Barley Stew

The chilly nights are ahead of us as winter calls for nourishing soups, hearty casseroles and warming stews! Ingredients • 2 tablespoons oil • 1.5 kg beef, cubed • ½ cup flour • 2 onions, sliced • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 2 carrots, chopped • 2 celery sticks, chopped • 1 red capsicum, chopped • 2 tablespoons tomato paste • 1 cup water • Juice of 1 orange • 1 beef stock cube • ½ cup pearl barley

recipe OF THE MONTH

Instructions Coat beef in flour and shake off excess. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large fry pan and fry beef in batches until brown. Set aside. Heat remaining oil and fry onion, garlic, capsicum, carrots, celery and bacon. Add beef to the pan as well as tomato paste, water, orange juice and stock cube. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for 1 hour. Add barley and cook for a further 30-40 minutes or until meat is tender and barley is cooked. Serve with veggies like green beans, carrots and broccoli. You can vary this stew to your liking, by adding any spice you want. Try adding harissa or cinnamon for a Middle Eastern twist, or replace the orange juice with BBQ sauce and paprika for a western smokey taste. Jonathan Flanagan Head Chef, Fresh Café at Mounties

EVER WONDERED HOW SLIME IS MADE? MATERIALS

• Water • White glue (pva) • Borax • Food colouring, choose your favourite colour

1. In a medium bowl, mix ½ cup of glue a ½ cup of water. 2. Add food colouring if you want your slime to be coloured.

3. In a small bowl, mix 1 teaspoon of borax with 1 cup of water. Stir until it’s dissolved.

4. Add the glue mixture to the borax solution, stir it slowly. 5. When the slime begins to set, you will need to mix it with your hands until it gets less sticky!

A SPIRIT THAT WILL ECHO THROUGH THE AGES Back in 1915, Fairfield had a population of about 900 people. Of these, 373 men and women enlisted to serve in World War I. Thirty-eight of them died including three at Gallipoli. As a community, we continue to gather and pay homage to our veterans and recognise the service and sacrifice by members of the Australian Defence Force on many occasions, one of them being ANZAC Day. This year, several distinguished guests including representatives of all three levels of government; Lieutenant Commander Andy Cichon, of the US Navy; and the School of Military Engineering attended the annual service at Mounties and paid tribute to those who fought endured, suffered and died for our country. In keeping the spirit of ANZAC alive today, an exhibition titled Advancing to Victory, 1918 will be on display at Mounties from 1 July until 29 July. The Australians on the Western Front 1916–1918 exhibition series is a joint initiative of the RSL & Services Clubs Association and the Australian War Memorial.

“The exhibition is central to the Club’s role in remembrance and educating the community on the sacrifices and hardships endured by our service men and women,” said Kevin Ingram, President of Mounties Group. Featuring key personalities and battles, the exhibition draws on the Memorial’s unique collections. On display are original maps, outstanding photographs, and remarkable works of art, some never displayed before. Other treasures include medals awarded to General Sir John Monash and Lord Birdwood, an 18-pounder field gun, and an exposed portion of a British Mark IV tank. Garrie Gibson, CEO of the RSL & Services Clubs said the Australian War Memorial was a worldclass museum and this exhibition was a chance to bring it out to communities. “The exhibition is only in town for a month, so I’d encourage locals to take the time to visit Mounties and reflect on this tumultuous time in our history,” he said.

‘Twas a night of glitz and glam with a sprinkle of Mounties fairy dust to create pure magic! Mounties celebrated its 50th birthday in April by hosting a lavish dinner for the club’s foundation members, subclub representatives, local politicians, sponsors, management and other dignitaries. The event took place in the Starz Room, catering for approximately 200 guests. Elegant, glamourous and exceptional in every way, the room bedazzled in fairy light-embedded draperies and crystal centrepieces. The room décor, seamless service, fabulous food and exceptional entertainment came together to create a night to remember.

MEET THE TEAM

Andrew Awad Exercise and Rehabilitation Coordinator Ignite Health and Fitness Centre

How many years have you been working for Mounties? I’ve been here for nine and a half years. How and when did you decide you wanted to be involved in fitness? I started off just training myself and I really enjoyed it. I then started my career at Ignite as a Personal Trainer, and over the years I became interested in rehabilitation and helping people find a solution to their injuries. I completed my degree in Exercise and Sport Science and that’s when I started working in Exercise Physiology. What does your role involve? I help mentor and manage all the Personal Trainers, making sure they are taking care of their clients. With the exercise physiology part of my role, my colleague Alex and I work together helping the rehabilitation patients, running both hydrotherapy and functional classes. We also run rehabilitation classes through the hospital and specialised balance classes for the elderly. I also do talks at the monthly Mounties Senior’s Day sessions on different topics around health and wellbeing.

What are the best foods to eat after a workout? You want something which has a little protein and carbohydrates, because you want to refuel your body. When you exercise, you deplete your body from your nutrients, so you want to have carbohydrates because that’s usually your primary fuel source for your exercise. Anything like brown rice, fruit or sweet potato are suitable as they are usually absorbed instantly by your body. Suitable proteins include chicken, meats and protein shakes. Tell us about a client who has inspired you? I have a client who is an amputee. He has lost both his hands and legs. When I first met him, he could barely stand. I have been treating him for about six months now and he’s able to walk on a treadmill, walks for longer distances, walks up and down stairs and gets in and out of the car. He feels more confident and is now able to do the things that we take for granted.

SWIMMING & ASTHMA According to statistics, approximately 1 in 9 Australians, both adults and children, have asthma. While there is no cure, most people can control their symptoms by avoiding triggers and exercising regularly to improve lung function and physical fitness. Swimming is a healthy form of aerobic exercise for people with asthma. It is a heart-healthy activity and great for strengthening lung capacity. Swimming and building lung capacity increases resistance to asthma. The advantages of water-based exercise for people with asthma include breathing warm, humid air that often lacks or contains reduced levels of allergy-triggering substances which can be found outdoors. Warm, moist air doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t irritate the lungs the way cold, dry air often does. Breathing humid air also cuts down on airway drying caused by an increased breathing rate during exercise. Airway drying can trigger asthma symptoms. Swimming is one activity that experts are increasingly recommending to keep your child healthy. Always talk to your doctor before undertaking a new exercise program.
