The Answer to Your Holiday Exhaustion By Katharine Conrad

amily Christmas concerts can be tricky. You want to do something fun and special with your loved ones, but those loved ones have different ideas about what is or isn’t “fun.” Dad likes country music, but Grandma prefers classical. Cousin Tom is a Christmas carol traditionalist, but Aunt Sue would rather hear something new and different. Above all else, whatever

COVER STORY cont... you pick needs to keep the kids entertained without boring the grownups, and vice-versa. Before you know it, your fun and special outing has become one more hectic holiday chore. Enter An Appalachian Christmas and Mark O’Connor, a man who gives new meaning to the word “eclectic.” The Appalachian Christmas album has topped bluegrass, country, and classical charts. I’m no expert, but I challenge you to think of another musician who has pulled that off with a single record. With his background in classical, folk, and jazz studies, O’Connor has made a name for himself as a musical mixologist, and nowhere is it more apparent than with this holiday show. Take for instance the wide range of guest artists on the source album: classical superstar Yo-Yo Ma, folk rocker James Taylor, Metropolitan Opera soprano Renee Fleming, and bluegrass/country singer Alison Krauss, among others. It’s difficult to think of another musician capable of bringing together such an array of artists from across the musical spectrum, but somehow Mark O’Connor does it, and the result is a beautifully varied holiday

bouquet. For the purists, there are recognizable standards with a subtle O’Connor twist: a jazzflavored “The Christmas Song” (“Chestnuts Roasting…”); a rendition of “What Child is This” with the ghost of a Celtic theme; a bouncy, down-home take on “Sleigh Ride;” a dreamy “Carol of the Bells.” For audiences Continued on page 6...

who want something more, O’Connor offers lesser-known tunes like “Cherry Tree Carol” and his own “Appalachia Waltz,” while maintaining his trademark style, which is to say, a variety of styles. Assortment of genres aside, O’Connor does keep one common thread running through An Appalachian Christmas: the tone. It’s cozy, neighborly,

and fun. This is neither a stuffy, impersonal performance nor an artificially pre-packaged sapfest. It’s a genuine invitation to stop by, relax, and enjoy the holidays with your friends and family. Turns out, it’s not so tricky after all. Mark O’Connor & Friends: An Appalachian Christmas takes the MBT Main Stage on Sunday, December 22nd, 2013, at 3:00pm.
