BUCKHANNON-UPSHUR FOOTBALL

The 2019 Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer Football Team

Bucs look to overcome 0-2 start to the season TENNERTON – Despite an 0-2 start to the season, Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Duane Stoeckle feels his team goals are still in front of his Buccaneer team. That goal of course is returning to the state play-offs after a two-year absence. Last season the Buccaneers just missed out on a playoff opportunity finishing 18th in the state with a 5-5 record. The top 16 advance to the playoffs. B-U lost a 29-28 nail-biter to Bridgeport last season that

wound up costing them a potential playoff berth. “This biggest obstacle for this team is they still have to believe they can do it,” remarked Stoeckle. “Despite our start, our team and our seniors know what they have to do.” The Bucs will likely need to go at least 6-2 the rest of the season, although five win teams have made the playoffs in prior seasons. The Bucs had to open the season against the defending Class AA champions in Fair-

mont Senior and then face a long road trip to Ripley, who made the Class AAA playoffs a season ago with a 9-1 record. “We simply have to do a better job with our execution,” remarked Stoeckle. “The team that makes the fewer mistakes in a game is usually going to win and that hasn’t been us the first two weeks of the season.” The Bucs are led by senior quarterback Ryan Strader, who has completed 18 of his 30 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown.

His main receiver this year has been senior Brayden Cutlip who has caught eight passes for 89 yards. The Bucs have had their troubles getting the running game going early in the season with just 74 yards on 58 carries. “We have to do a better job of blocking up front and getting our backs some running room,” noted Stoeckle. “We are always going to look to run the ball first.” The Bucs are also looking for a way to slow down their

opponents on defense. Fairmont Senior and Ripley have combined for 104 points and 871 yards in two games thus far. “We simply have to do a better job of tackling, especially in oneon-one situations,” said Stoeckle. The Bucs will battle another winless team this Friday when they travel to Philip Barbour in a clash with the Class AA Colts. Following that, the Bucs will have a week off to prepare for a play-off run and will then return to action Friday, Sept.27

at Greenbrier East. The schedule sets up nicely for the Bucs in October with three straight home games. They face John Marshall in a homecoming battle on Oct. 4, then rival Lewis County on Oct. 11 then a battle with the University Hawks on Oct. 18. The Bucs take to the road the final Friday with a trip to Brooke before returning home Nov. 1 with a senior night outing with Preston. They close out the season Nov. 8 on the road against Elkins.

BUCKHANNON-UPSHUR BOYS SOCCER

The 2019 Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer Soccer Team

Soccer Bucs scoring a lot as they start season 5-2

TENNERTON – A lot of scoring and solid defense and goal keeping is a recipe for success in soccer and that is the formula Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Mike Donato is using this season. In seven games, the Bucs have scored 40 games averaging just under six goals per game. Junior Ryan Hurst has been leading the offense with 18 goals. Meanwhile, the defense with keeper Logan Kelley leading the way have given up just four goals during the season with four shutouts. With 12 lettermen back and 16 returnees back on the roster, the Bucs are off to a solid 5-2 start to the season. “Those players are bringing leadership and varsity experience for our freshmen and first year players,” noted Donato in an earlier interview. The Bucs are hoping for big things this season and already have a win over sectional foe Morgantown back on Aug. 27 by a 2-1 score. “That game was a true test of how this team is learning to adapt and maintain composure,” Donato said after the win.

Young but experienced Lady Bucs finding success this soccer season TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur soccer Lady Bucs are off to a 4-0-1 start to the season. The Lady Bucs have already picked up a key win with a 3-2 victory over sectional foe Morgantown back on Aug. 29.

B-U has outscored their opponents by a 16-8 margin. Their one tie occurred against Ripley at home, in a game in which they outplayed the Vikings but had to settle for the tie. Head coach Jackie Zuliani

has high hopes for her 2019 squad despite being stuck in one of the toughest regions in the state and having no seniors on the team. “Despite not having any seniors, we have a ton of soccer experience on this team. We

want to make it a memorable season, but unfortunately we have the strongest section and region to go through. If we can stay positive, and stay together and support each other, anything is possible this season.”

Volleyball Lady Bucs have youth and talent

TENNERTON – It was a whirlwind of a first season for the Buckhannon-Upshur head volleyball coach Ashley Stanton last year. She was hired for the job right before the practice season was set to begin, moving from the middle school to the high school, then she was trying to plan her wedding and honeymoon on top of everything else. Now able to start her second season a little more stress-free, Stanton is hoping for some good things from her Lady Bucs this fall. And she saw some good things from her Lady Bucs in their opener last week when they earned wins over Gilmer County and Roane County. “I am excited to see what the season brings with new leadership from seniors, Abigail Vincent and Johnna Smith along with junior McKenzie Reynolds,” noted Stanton. “This year's senior class includes players on our first volleyball team as coaches. Abbie and Johnna were eighth graders during my first year as coaches at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School in 2015. These two girls have become great athletes over the years. Stanton will turn to a younger roster filled with 14 sophomores and five freshman for the 2019 season. Volleyball Seniors — Abagail “As always, we look forward to working with such a great Vincent (left) and Johnna group of talented girls,” concluded Stanton. “We are excited to Smith (right) see what the season will bring.”

The golf Bucs have repeatedly won tri-matches and have had golfers earn low medalist honors. With the season drawing to a close, head coach Jason Westfall is preparing his Bucs for the Big 10 Conference Championships and Regional Championships begin in Sept. 23 and Sept. 30 respectively. “I am very proud off all their work and improvement this season,” remarked Westfall. “They have really stepped up their games.
