Design Concept:

The house is designed in a Vernacular style. The project challenges to adapt vernacular style and methods of designing and construction. The farm house is designed for an old couple who wanted to take retirement and come back to India from the US. The couple are fascinated with the local architecture and wanted their farm house to be a typical example for vernacular architecture and a home that feels alive and natural. We have used different local materials like wood, bamboo, stone, terracotta tiles, dried palm leaves for roofing, etc. The interiors are designed with a focus on the traditional ornamentation and yet functional and elegant with warm colors and wooden furniture in all the spaces

ACADEMIC WORK Site Area: 25 Acres

Location:

Salihundam Hills, Gara Mandal, Srikakulam, AP.

MOTIVATION The reason for me to choose ecotourism resort as my architectural thesis topic is to provide a place for the people who want to escape from undesirable conditions – high densities, pollution and organized routine lives. My love for nature also motivated me to choose this topic. This topic is interesting because it can change the pace of busy world and provide opportunities for relaxation, and contact with nature. Another reason for me to choose this topic is to fulfill the area of my interest to create refreshing green spaces with landscaping and provide a better environment to this existing busy world by conserving nature and to help promote tourism. INTRODUCTION "Ecotourism is environmentally responsible travel and visitation to relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy, study and appreciate nature (and any accompanying cultural features - both past and present), that promotes conservation, has low visitor impact, and provides for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local populations” BACKGROUND Holidays are the most important thing in our lives. As more and more places open up to tourists, people are looking beyond the traditional sun, sea and sand experiences. Ecotourism, a form of tourism that takes you to unusual and rather fragile areas, is the tourism industry’s fastest growing sector. But as ecotourism expands beyond the jungle and moves into the mainstream so do Eco-resorts. Now more and more are selling themselves as “green” and “eco”. This “Eco-transformation” of leisure resorts is due to a number of reasons; the maturing of the “sun and fun” holidaying segment, the general public’s increasing environmental awareness, and the doubling concern with physical fitness and health. AIM • An attempt to design an Ecotourism Resort in Salihundam (Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh) where there is a scope for tourism as Srikakulam District of Andhra Pradesh, with Long Coast Line, Rivers, Rivulets, Lakes and with rich Heritage of over 2000 years, offers excellent opportunities for development of Ecotourism. • To promote tourism and the rich heritage of Srikakulam . • Which provides employment opportunities for the local people. OBJECTIVES • • • • • • • • • •

To create a self-contained environment. PLANNING Visual impact Connectivity to the fabric of community. Flexibility for changes. Climatology should be consider. It should involves recreations, adventures and enjoyment. It should contribute employment opportunities, education programs for the people employed and the guest. Use of alternative energy resources like solar and wind. Use of environmental friendly building materials and indigenous plants in the construction and landscaping of the resort.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS • The scope is to emphasize on landscaping, restaurants, accommodation and entertainment spaces. • The resort will comprise- luxury and normal accommodations, restaurant, food courts, sports facilities, swimming pools, museum and information center, crafts bazar, amphitheater, boating area, walkways, camping ground, green 18 house with plantation , recreational spaces like boating, clubhouse that include spa, gym and swimming pool etc…. • The project is limited to the selected site conditions of the area.
