Parents of 3 to 4 year old children Has Your Child Been Screened? Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how children are developing between the ages of 3 to 4 years. It identifies, at an early stage, possible learning or health concerns so that children can get the help they need before starting school. Early Childhood Screening is not an IQ test or a Kindergarten entrance exam. Morris Area PreKindergarten classes require that screening be done within 90 days of program entry and it is required by state law for children before they can begin in Kindergarten. Early Childhood Screening only needs to be completed once. Screening is a free review of your child’s vision, hearing, height, weight, overall development, and immunization records. For the Morris Area Schools, children are screened at Horizon Public Health by a nurse. Watch for an information packet in the mail shortly after your child turns three -and-a-half years of age. If you do not receive a packet, call the Public Health office at 320-208-6672 to set up the day and time for your child’s screening. Are Your Children on the School Census?

You matter to us! The school census is a list of students from birth to school age. It is used to inform parents about opportunities that their child needs to be ready to enter school when they turn five years of age. Notifications for events and programs such as early childhood screening, prekindergarten opportunities, special events, family nights, kindergarten registration, etc. will be mailed to families based on the census data.

American Sign Language Mr. Timothy Poore Ages 12+

in a small group setting!

No previous sign language experience is required to attend this class. Mr. Poore will guide you in learning the basics of American Sign Language. After these 5 sessions, you will be able to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing people in your community and beyond.

Mr. Poore is a Teaching Specialist at the University of Minnesota-Morris and a member of the Midwest Special Education Cooperative. He brings over 20 years of ASL teaching experience to this class. Register today for this amazing opportunity for less than $4 per session!

French Language, Culture, and Cuisine!

Manon Paweloszek (from Creil, France) + UMM Professor Buchanan, Coordinator Ages 15+

If you have ever dreamed of going to Paris or have plans to travel to France in the future, this class is for you. Over eight nights, Manon Paweloszek, a French native, will do her best to share her language, culture, and cuisine with you. You will learn beginning French while focusing on French food as the class’s theme. Highlights will include watching a film about French cuisine and learning to make a fantastic French dessert. Many people dream of traveling to Paris; this class will bring French language, culture, and cuisine to you.

Elliot Viker Ages 8—108

Experience the thrill and excitement of fly fishing! This is a 2-session course that will be limited to 10 anglers in an effort to maximize your experience.

You will acquire new skills and learn many fascinating facts about fish. Most importantly, you will learn how to catch walleye, northern pike, pan fish, bass, muskie, trout, and salmon on a fly rod! Instructor Elliot Viker brings 20 years of fly fishing experience to this class!

It's that time of year when everyone is getting together for outdoor events and family reunions. How can you capture those great lifestyle shots? Bring your DSLR or Digital Camera (no phones or film cameras please) along for an evening full of tips, tricks, and advice to capture your perfectly posed and candid family photos. Michelle Nelson Photography will be sharing information about camera settings, backgrounds, posing, and lighting. There will be models joining our class to practice with, along with a selection of Michelle's favorite props to use with children and adults of all ages. Have your questions ready for Michelle; she is ready to help you create that picture perfect moment!

This class is a great opportunity for children and parents to interact in a fun and unique setting while allowing the little gymnasts to explore the world around them. We will work on walking across the floor beams, swinging on the small bars, rolling around the floor, and learning to balance while jumping on the trampoline.

This level is for the beginner who has little or no experience. Students will learn basic floor and beam skills and will also have the chance to use the springboard. They will be learning cartwheels, backbends and touch on round offs and walkovers.

Grades 2—5 Completed

This level is designed for those who have had previous experience in gymnastics and who are ready to perfect old skills and learn new ones. Students will have a chance to use the vault, as well as the floor and beam apparatus. They will perfect their round offs and work on back walkovers with light spot and begin back handsprings.

These pre-team classes are aimed at providing the progressing gymnast more challenging skills. Focus lies in the continual improvement of skill achievement such as true vaulting with the table, a kip on bars, and both front and back handsprings on floor. Putting skills into sequences also becomes a new objective for the athlete.

High School Gymnastics MACA Coaching Staff Grades 7—12

These sessions are designed for students entering grades 7—12 that have been a part of or are considering becoming a part of the gymnastics team.

Activities will include weight training and conditioning, along with uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, and the vault. Review and learning of new tricks, as well as putting together routines will be included.

T-ball with your preschoolers is a great opportunity to introduce your son or daughter to the sport of softball/baseball. This is a parent child program where parents will be directly involved in doing all of the fun drills with their child(ren). The program teaches kids the basic skills needed to play softball/baseball while they work one on one and spend quality time with their parents.

Coordinator and Supervisor: Tim Grove Grades K—2 Completed

Morris Area Community Education, UMM Coach Tim Grove and local staff members are excited about and are committed to making this league the best beginner program in West Central Minnesota. This co-ed league will focus on developing the skills necessary to be a successful softball or baseball player while keeping the fun in “fun”damentals. The emphasis will be on skill building and learning the proper techniques for playing softball and baseball. The players will be divided into smaller groups to increase fielding and batting opportunities. All players will be given opportunities to bat and field multiple times throughout each session. Team play concepts will also be covered. The coaches will do most of the pitching to keep the mini games and drills moving.

In this League, we use Softie Training balls and tennis balls. Therefore, batting helmets are not required. However, athletes can bring and use their personal batting helmet. Having the child’s name clearly written on all items is also helpful. Please bring your glove, appropriate footwear, and a water bottle to practice each day. The registration fee includes a league t-shirt. Information about Picture Day will be given at the first practice. Registration deadline to ensure a league t-shirt: June 1. Get ready to have a fantastic softball/baseball experience!

Little League & Babe Ruth Pitcher/Catcher Camp Don Goracke and Jarrod Asmus Players ages 9—14

This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the best! Campers will learn the proper throwing mechanics when working from the pitcher and catcher positions. Little League and Babe Ruth pitchers will receive throwing mechanics for various types of fastballs, change up, and curve ball pitches. Camp will also cover fielding from the pitching position and managing base runners. Catchers will learn mechanics for receiving and framing pitches, blocking low pitches, getting off quick and accurate throws to bases.

Elementary Softball League

The summer softball season is fast approaching! Players are responsible for providing their own glove and pants. While MACE does provide some batting helmets, having your own NOCSAE approved helmet with a NOCSAE stamped mask is encouraged.

Games will be played at Wells Park on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The regular season will tentatively conclude on June 22. The post season tournament will wrap up on Thursday, July 13 (weather permitting). No games July 3—7.

Summer Sizzle Grades K—6 Completed

Explore a summer of hands-on interactive fun with recreation and enrichment topics that feature active participation and imagination. Summer Sizzle combines approximately three hours of academic enrichment a day, introducing the fascinating worlds of reading and literacy, technology, math, and science in a format that focuses on fun. The rest of the day is spent playing sports or games, swimming, creative enrichment, and exploring the many facets of the Morris community, resulting in a great, well-rounded experience.

Afternoons at Summer Sizzle will include approximately two hours of swimming and water play 3 days a week at the Regional Fitness Center.

One day a week will be spent on a Summer Sizzle field trip or participating in a special event! These days and events will be communicated with families ahead of time.

Fastpitch Softball Pitching Series

Little Old School House

The focus of this series will be on mechanics and fundamentals of windmill pitching.

Mackenzie Weatherly is a former MAHS and University of Minnesota, Morris standout pitcher. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend with their child as well as elementary softball coaches before the elementary softball season begins. Rules, technique, and proper form will be covered, along with answering your questions.

Students will attend a one-day classroom session and then return on Thursday for a Field Day. Students will compete in races and participate in many other activities that country kids used to play at the end of a school year. Help crank homemade ice cream to eat during the Field Day! Fun awards will be given out for Field Day events. Families are invited to watch and cheer on the students during the Field Day activities. Teachers will wear clothing from the old days and students are invited to wear clothing from the old days as well. Each student will be given his or her own historical toy to keep at the end of the session. PLEASE NOTE: A snack will be provided during the classroom day, but students need to bring a sack lunch.

The Little Old School House is co-sponsored by Morris Area Community Education & Stevens County Historical Society.

Fall Youth Tackle Football

Camp Alpha

Are you interested in playing tackle football this fall? Games are played Tuesdays and/ or Thursdays starting in September. Athletes can wear tennis shoes or molded football cleats. Metal and removable spikes are not allowed. Morris Area Community Education will provide a helmet, mouth guard, practice jersey, pants and pads, shoulder pads, and game jersey. You can register by picking up a form at the MACE office or on our website. Morris Area Elementary A Message from the Elementary Principal Dates to Remember

While the seasons change, our focus at MAES has not. We will continually strive to help students achieve at the highest level possible. Our expectations are high and we use research proven methods to deliver effective, high quality instruction for our students! We collect and review data to drive our instruction and intervention decision-making to best meet all our student’s needs. If you have any questions about our educational programming please call, email, or just stop in to see the great things we are doing at MAES!

Grades 1 & 2 Music Program—April 6

A matinee will be held starting at 1:45 p.m. in the Concert Hall. The evening performance will have grade one starting at 6:30 p.m. and grade two at 7:30 p.m. The kindergarten concert has been rescheduled to May 25 @ 2:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall.

Looking Ahead To A New School Year...

Incoming Kindergarten Students Around August 14, the Elementary School office will mail out your teacher assignments. Our kindergarten teachers are very excited about the upcoming year. The District Wide Open House is scheduled for August 24 and will give your child an opportunity to get acquainted with the room, see their teacher and other students from the class. It is also an opportunity to meet other parents. The first full school day for kindergarten students will be Thursday, September 7. All other students (grades 1-12) will start school on Tuesday, September 5. As the parent of a kindergarten student you and your child will be required to visit the school on either September 5 or 6. We will send you a scheduled time for this meeting. During the meeting (which will last about 90 minutes):  Your child will have a 15 minute assessment with his/her teacher  Parents will visit with the classroom teacher and complete appropriate forms  Your child will participate in various screenings (Speech, Vision/Hearing, IGDI’s, Finger Scan) Grades 1—6 Students in grades 1—6 will have their teacher assignments mailed out approximately August 14. Teacher assignments will not be given out prior to you receiving the school notification letter.

New Student Orientation Are you new to the community and have school age children? Please contact the elementary office 320-589-1250 to request registration materials or visit the school website [click on Elementary Home and then choose the Back to School / New Students link]. You can visit us at MAES as well. Early notification assists us with planning and securing appropriate materials.

Open House In The Fall The Morris Area School District will hold a District Wide Open House on Thursday, August 24, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Your family will locate your child’s classroom and locker, meet the teacher, drop off supplies, meet students and parents, take care of lunch and milk money, etc. This evening will help kids get organized and feel more comfortable for the start of the school year. I would encourage everyone to participate as this is for the student and parent. We are excited about the open house, as our teachers are not available during the day on August 2123. They are participating in trainings, meetings, room and curriculum preparation. Please join us on the evening of August 24!

6th Grade Minnesota History Project Open House—May 17

Morris Area 6th graders will hold an open house at the Elementary South Gym to showcase their Minnesota History Projects. The students have been working on these projects throughout the school year. Now they would like to share them with the public. Join us from 10:00 a.m.—2:00 p.m. to view the wide variety of topics about our fair state.

Awards Day—June 1

The annual All-School Awards Ceremony will be held on June 1 at 1:45 p.m. in the Concert Hall. This is a celebration for students to be recognized for their success in areas such as academics, school attendance, the Schulz/Kaehler award, Geography Bee, Math Masters, and physical education. Parents and grandparents are welcome to attend.

Targeted Services (Tiger Targets)

The Morris Area School District is offering summer classes for eligible students who just completed Kindergarten through Sixth Grade.

Students are invited to participate through a teacher referral. Our goal is to pack the summer classes with fun and adventurous learning opportunities. The primary focus of “Tiger Targets” is on academic instruction and remediation (80%), but supports the whole learner.

Targeted students will receive letters in late April.

A Message from the High School Principal Spring activities are in full swing and the last quarter of the school year begins April 3rd. We will continue to work hard to provide the best possible education for our students and to make the most of the days we have left, as summer will be here before we know it.

With the spring of the year, comes required annual state assessments for our students. Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA’s) are given to students across the state. Elementary and junior high students in grades third through eighth will take tests in reading and mathematics. Fifth and eighth grade students will also be administered a science test. In the high school, tenth grade students will take a reading and science test and eleventh grade students take a test in mathematics.

These statewide tests are summative measurements of student achievement that are used to evaluate student learning, skill, and assess achievement of the Minnesota Academic Standards. Our English language learners are also tested on their language proficiency development. Our staff works very hard throughout the school year delivering these standards to our students and giving them the skills necessary to be successful on these assessments and the skills necessary to be successful in life after high school. These tests will began on April 3rd and will continue through May 5th. Please visit the high school or elementary website for a complete testing schedule. On April 19, our eleventh grade students will also have the opportunity to take the ACT test during the school day. There is no cost to take this ACT test.

As the school year winds down, planning for the 2017-2018 school year is underway. Course registration has been completed and work continues on student schedules and the master schedule.
