Tahoe—home of ski and snowboard champions, huge mountains, big snow and even bigger blue skies—is on the bucket list of skiers and snowboarders around the world. From the 1960 Winter Olympics to today, locals from the area have stood on the world winter sports stage as Reno-Tahoe skiers and snowboarders brought home three gold medals and a bronze from the last Winter Olympics. This big ski destination has the complete menu of terrain and resorts—mile upon mile of intermediate runs, ideal beginner terrain and infamous black diamond cliff bands—all of it surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. World-class, complete and convenient, Reno-Tahoe has direct flights from 16 cities and a dozen ski areas less than 90 minutes from the airport. Your choice of vacation “basecamp” runs the gamut from ski towns, modern resort villages and hotel/casino/ entertainment hubs to ski-in, backcountry huts. Delicious dining your thing? There’s a full menu, from value buffets to unique gourmet, to enhance your visit. Après ski or days off the slopes, this place is magic! You’ll find brew pubs, slopeside bars, 24-hour casinos, shows and music. Walk the wooden sidewalks of an Old West town on a non-ski day, or a take a cruise on Lake Tahoe. Reno-Tahoe is the ticket to winter excitement, rejuvenation and relaxation, too. And plan to fill both your head and smart phone with memories of peak experiences and smiles.

Where to Ski So many choices: 21 downhill and cross-country resorts, from big and first-class to casual and chill.
©RYAN SALM PHOTOGRAPHY
Tahoe’s most famous ski resorts—with state-of-the-art lift networks that connect multiple peaks—are Heavenly Mountain Resort, Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows and Northstar. Although each are quite different, they all have hardcore skiing and riding possibilities, wide intermediate trails, spacious lodges and full-service for those wanting some pampering. Kirkwood is also a big Tahoe ski experience, but with less pampering and more solitude. Snow quality and terrain variety makes Sierra-at-Tahoe a favorite of season pass holders. Lesser known nationally are Tahoe’s mighty middleweights: Mt. Rose, Diamond Peak, Homewood and Sugar Bowl. They don’t have the heavyweights’ acreage, but each has a complement of fun terrain for most abilities, with less expensive lift tickets. Mt. Rose’s high elevations yield light, dry snow. Diamond Peak has excellent snowmaking and incredible views. Homewood has its own breathtaking scenery, a core vibe and wind-protected powder runs in the trees.

Are you a hard charger? Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows and Kirkwood are extreme meccas, with Heavenly and Mt. Rose also sporting double-black chutes and cliff-bands. Heavenly, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Squaw/Alpine serve up stellar, widely spaced trees. Rather just cruise? Northstar and Heavenly feature miles of impeccably groomed, intermediate runs. Sierra, Alpine and Sugar Bowl also have multiple mid-level runs. Want to tour New School epi-centers? Hit the parks and half-pipes at Northstar, Squaw/Alpine, Sierra, Heavenly or Boreal. Rather carve untracked? Backcountry gates open under the right conditions at Kirkwood, Heavenly, Sugar Bowl and Alpine Meadows boundary lines. Tahoe’s winter weather is amazing, four out of five sunny days on average. Resort elevations range from 6,000 to 10,000 feet, the highest at Heavenly, Kirkwood, Mt. Rose and Squaw. Squaw/Alpine, Sugar Bowl and Kirkwood straddle the Sierra Crest with deep annual snowfall, but big storms might close their upper lifts. Homewood and Northstar are more wind-protected. In dry periods, Heavenly, Northstar, Diamond Peak and Boreal have excellent snowmaking.

Where to Stay The Reno-Tahoe area consists of multiple destinations within one, each with unique advantages and charm.
South Lake Tahoe / Stateline Tahoe's South Shore has a huge variety of lodging options for any budget. Heavenly Mountain Gondola is only steps from numerous hotels and casino resort towers. Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood ski areas are 30-45 minutes from South Tahoe. This large resort community has a full variety of family-friendly dining, plus outstanding high-end spots. Heavenly Village and surrounding blocks have tons of fun shops, boutiques and eateries. This town is famous for aprés ski and nightlife too, including free shows and 24-hour action in the casino/resorts at Stateline. Tahoe’s scenic southern shoreline is gorgeous in the winter, with excellent snowshoeing near historic estates. The North Shore is a charming mix of small hamlets and lakefront lodging in California and upscale resort amenities in Nevada. Tahoe City, Kings Beach, and Homewood are California communities with Incline Village and Crystal Bay in Nevada. In and between them are excellent dining choices. Shuttles connect to Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Diamond Peak, Homewood and Mt. Rose. Or stay close to the slopes at Squaw Valley or Northstar villages.
Truckee This Old West town has unique lodging, restaurants, shops and nightlife. Nearby ski resorts are Northstar, Squaw/Alpine, Sugar Bowl, Boreal, Donner Ski Ranch and Tahoe Donner, most with their own shuttles. Excellent cross-country resorts nearby at Royal Gorge, Tahoe Donner and Northstar with Tahoe Cross-Country a half hour drive in Tahoe City. Donner State Park Museum tells the story of the pioneers who first crossed these mountains. 8 SKI Reno | Tahoe 2017

North Lake Tahoe
This four-season destination is nestled on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada and a convenient home base for travelers who want to experience the best of what northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe have to offer. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is a quick jump from many northern and southern California airports, and new, nonstop service to Chicago, Atlanta, Houston and New York City make for an easy winter getaway. Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe and Diamond Peak are just a 30- and 45-minute drive from downtown Reno, respectively. Driven in part by a local tech boom, with companies like Tesla, Apple, Google, Amazon and Switch heavily invested in the destination, the Reno area is experiencing a resurgence of entertainment, dining, and the arts. The Nevada Museum of Art continues to be a bastion for regional and international artistry, and the burgeoning food movement has revitalized the culinary scene, with niche restaurants drawing from local farms and ranches, and contributing to more than a dozen new award-winning breweries near the downtown area. Music and nightlife still highlight the sparkling high-desert town when the sun goes down, and eclectic shops, eateries and specialty cocktail bars can be found throughout the growing Riverwalk and Mid-Town districts.

Driving Around With so much to see, ski and do, better stay another day! the mountains often have the choice of two or more ski resorts within minutes of their lodging. Ski resort shuttles pick up and drop off from major lodging properties and central locations around Tahoe’s mountain towns. Longer shuttles are available for skiers or riders wanting to sample resorts on the opposite side of the lake. All major car rental companies are represented at Reno-Tahoe International Airport, with three routes leading to ski country. Rental vehicles are also available at two general aviation airports. Truckee Tahoe Airport offers private planes and charter flights headed for North Tahoe, while Lake Tahoe Airport is within the city limits of South Lake Tahoe. To take in all the scenic sides of “The Lake of the Sky,” plan on about a two-hour drive around Lake Tahoe’s 72-mile circumference. The route is open throughout winter, experiencing only temporary closures around Emerald Bay after large snowstorms. While Tahoe’s main transportation routes are kept clear of snow in all but the worst weather, those renting a car might still consider a four-wheel drive option or make sure that tire chains are provided with their vehicle.

The great naturalist John Muir wrote, “Tahoe is surely not one but many.” Exploring the many sights of Tahoe is a delight for visitors to this area, whether by shuttle, private vehicle or rental car. After all, you’ll find some of the most scenic roads on earth in Lake Tahoe. No matter what means of transport you choose, you won’t need to travel far to experience an exciting variety of sights, sounds and slopes. South Lake Tahoe and North Lake Tahoe are both “complete” destinations, with multiple ski resorts and a full range of lodging, dining and entertainment. Yet each community is unique in its own way—a charming aspect of the Reno-Tahoe region—from historic mountain resort towns to full-service ski villages. Lake Tahoe can be reached by car via two U.S. interstate highways. On the north side, Interstate 80 heads west from Reno or east from Sacramento, connecting with two roads in Truckee that lead to Lake Tahoe: California Routes 89 and 267. To the south, Interstate 50 leads into Tahoe from Sacramento to the west and Carson City to the east. Skiers and riders who opt for accommodation in Reno have less than an hour drive to multiple ski resorts. Those staying in

North California / NV Route Map Lake Tahoe is an accessible Shangri-la in winter, reached by interstate highways cleared of snow in all but the largest storms. Interstate 80 is a main artery of America and often kept snow-free between Sacramento, Truckee and Reno. US 50 travels from Sacramento through South Lake Tahoe and on to Carson City. California Highway 88 heads from Stockton to Kirkwood, with routes on to South Lake Tahoe and Carson City. Four-wheel drive vehicles with all-season tires will usually get you around fine in winter storms. Two-wheel drives should definitely carry chains; practice putting them on prior to heading for the mountains.
