One laid bricks, the other installed burglar alarms; the last book either had read would be something in their childhood. Jamie was no great scholar himself – he’d failed three of his GCSEs, and secured only two grade Cs – but every now and then he’d pick up a horror novel, welcoming the change from dispiriting telly at home. He didn’t want people to think he was a loser.
