a monetary award. In addition, Environmental Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Milford residents Gerald Esposito and The Wilkerson Family in recognition of their “sustained meritorious achievement and significant contributions to Delaware’s environment.” Esposito is the president of Tidewater Utilities; he began working in the environmental field in 1976 as an environmental planner for Sussex County. The Wilkerson Family’s award was accepted by Charles, David, and Arlene Wilkerson who operate the Wilkerson Water Company in Milford; the family has been in the public water service industry since 1962. The statewide operator of the year awards ceremony serves to highlight the role of Delaware’s water and wastewater operators in protecting the environment. Award winners are chosen for their “outstanding technical excellence and exemplary work ethic contributing to the high level of water quality in Delaware.” The ceremony is held each year on the Owens Campus, which provides a stateof-the-art Environmental Training Center for the hands-on education of operators from Delaware and surrounding states. The center has achieved international recognition for the excellence of its training programs.

The Owens Campus of Delaware Technical & Community College honored the state’s water and wastewater operators during an annual awards ceremony held Thursday, May 7, in Georgetown. American Shad released in river

American shad are an important link in the Nanticoke River and Chesapeake Bay ecosystem, serving as a food source for largemouth and striped bass, as well as providing a tasty table treat prized by recreational and commercial fisherman. With their numbers in the Nanticoke dwindling, the native East Coast species is the focus of a long-term restoration program under the DNREC Division
