This was the year of the Umbrella Movement, and we could hardly be unaware of it, even in the quiet corner of Chinese University that is Morningside College. You will not find much reflection of these events in the Report. A number of our students took part in it, but I do not believe there is a noticeable impact on their academic performance. Overall, our students perform well, as is reflected in the large number on the Master’s List. Many of them find our first-term general education course, “Dilemmas”, challenging, and work hard at it. They are not all comfortable with what I think we can call our intellectual approach; but almost all get involved. Credit goes to the Fellows who give lectures in the course, the Junior Fellows who run the tutorial classes, and above all, DAVID PARKER, formerly a Fellow, now Senior College Tutor, who played a large part in designing the course. Sadly he may not be teaching in person again, but information technology may bring him in from distant Adelaide. An apostle for the humanities, David has been an important part of the College since the beginning. SAMMY LIU, a Physical Education lecturer located in College, is also leaving this summer. He is going to be greatly missed too. He supported our students so well in a number of sports, and they have sometimes done better than a small college can expect. Rowing is one we celebrate particularly this year, with a gold in the inter-college rowing, for the men’s double sculls, thanks to MATTHEW HUI and NEO CHONG. Our men’s and women’s eights performed well too, without getting medals. These two oarsmen happen to represent our largest subject groups, medicine and business studies. Contrary to the common stereotypes, our medical students do not spend all their time studying, nor our business students practising financial investment (not these days a wise use of anyone’s time). The College has a varied mix internationally: many students come from other parts of China, and many from other countries. Exchange students, generally from further away, provide yet more variety. We have quite a full range of subjects too. It would be good to have more students in the Arts and Humanities.

2

We encourage everyone to engage with the arts to some degree, by offering plenty of opportunities. This year we had a weekly film night, a series of book recommendations, paid visits to museums and concerts, dinner-time musical performances, mainly by our own students, and the students organized a society for philosophical discussions. The one visitor on our Distinguished Visitor programme was a novelist, VIKRAM CHANDRA. And we had our annual Burns Supper: our students, and fellows, have the chance of hearing a wee bit of Scottish poetry each year. One Fellow on the Arts and Humanities side was DENISE HO, in Chinese Studies, a valuable member of the College for the last two years, but she has just left Chinese University for Yale. NELSON CHEN, the Director of the School of Architecture has joined the College. In CUHK, Architecture is part of the Social Science Faculty, but having two Fellows in Architecture strengthens the Arts in the College. Many people made what is described in this report possible. I want to thank the principals by name. We all owe a great debt to JANNY LEUNG, who as Dean and Warden is responsible for many aspects of college activity, from the selection of new students to organizing the award of scholarships and other financial support. ANN HUSS, our Associate Master has many complementary responsibilities, above all looking after the general education programme, with the help of the Junior Fellows. DORA DAI, the College Secretary, with her staff, runs the College as a place of residence, dealing with all the problems that implies, services College committees, and handles many other aspects of its administration. All are much appreciated, and I thank them with all my heart. The College will mark its tenth anniversary next year, already. We count from the moment when the College was formally created, without people, buildings, or even a precise vision. We have come a long way, and will have to launch an appeal, in order to keep our finances healthy, and establish a future as good as our short past. The report you have before you tells you about us now, in words, numbers and pictures.

M A STER’S REPORT

THE COLLEGE 書院簡介 “There’s no question – when you chose Morningside, you chose well.”

MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE

DARRYL TSE (MEDICINE), DINNER FOR FAMILIES OF THE CLASS OF 2015, 1 APRIL 2015

A College is meant to be much more than a hall of residence — it is also where students eat, socialise, receive pastoral support, and where first-year students gather on Fridays for General Education tutorials. How much time students spend in College varies. For a few students, Morningside may simply be the place where they sleep and attend tutorials. For most Morningsiders, however, the College means much more. The people of Morningside – its dedicated staff, committed Fellows and dynamic students - create experiences that change perspectives. A few examples of these experiences from the 2014-2015 academic year are included below. Academic terms begin and end with Formal Hall. The Fellows gather in the Master’s Lodge for pre-dinner drinks and conversation, before processing into the Hall for gowning. Students arrive in formal attire and don the College gown. Candles are lit, the gong is rung, and special dishes are served before the Master, a Fellow, or a special guest takes the stage to give a dinner talk. Guest speakers in 2014-2015 included: College Fellow and Director of the School of Architecture Professor NELSON CHEN, Vice

6

Chairman of Goldin Real Estate Financial Holdings Limited, winemaker and polo aficionado HARVEY LEE, and Hong Kong film producer, director, and scriptwriter ALFRED CHEUNG. Guest speakers also join communal dinners at other times throughout the year. In November 2014, botanical artist SALLY BUNKER introduced the painstaking work behind recording one hundred of Hong Kong’s most significant trees for a book collaboration with the University of Hong Kong. In March 2015, novelist and coder VIKRAM CHANDRA spent a week at Morningside as a Distinguished Visitor. During his sojourn at the College, he gave a dinner talk entitled “Chitram: the poetry of play” and a public lecture on “Language, Meaning, and Sacred Grammar”. These gatherings over dinner are meant to increase interaction among scholars, artists, public figures, and students, and to enrich students' overall learning experience. Communal dining also provides an excellent opportunity for Morningsiders to mix with students from different courses and year groups.

Communal dinners take place in the ground floor Dining Hall of Morningside’s Maurice R. Greenberg Building. The Greenberg Building was named for the Chairman of the Board of The Starr Foundation, MAURICE R. “HANK” GREENBERG, whose generous donation made the development of the College possible. In July 2015, Morningside welcomed the President of The Starr Foundation, FLORENCE DAVIS, to campus for the first time. Ms Davis shared

lunch with members of the University community in the newly-partitioned “Small Hall”, and was given a tour of the College, with a focus on the Greenberg Building. Education has long been a funding priority of the Foundation, and Morningside is especially grateful for the generosity of Mr Greenberg, Ms Davis, and The Starr Foundation. We hope they will visit us often in the years to come.

M A STER’S REPORT

MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE

In 2014, College Fellows interviewed over 250 students, either by phone or in person in Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shenzhen. 70 students (26% of those interviewed) were admitted. When compared to admissions statistics for 2013, only a minor variance was noted: the number of local Hong Kong and Mainland admittees increased (+2% and +3% respectively), while International admittees decreased (-5%). Student intake by faculty in 2014 remained relatively stable. Decreases in students from Engineering, Law, and Social Science faculties made way for increases in Medicine and Arts. Over HK$2.3m in Scholarships and Financial Aid was awarded to deserving students this year, an increase of HK$0.2m over last year. Admission Scholarships, awarded for top academic performance at entrance to the University – and renewed for students who continue to achieve top marks while studying at CUHK – increased in 20142015 by 12%, evidence that, alongside the large number of students on the Master’s List each year, many Morningsiders take their studies very seriously.

Morningside’s Student Union (MCSU), led by President MARK LEUNG (Year 1, Geography & Resource Management) during the fall semester, represented students on College Committees, advocated on behalf of students, and ran the MCSU Tuck Shop. In Spring 2015, students elected new Executive and Representative Councils, with BRYONY BAR (Year 1, English) as the new Student Union President. It has become a tradition for the incoming Student Union to coordinate photo day for the graduands, and this year was no different as the Class of 2015 donned their caps and gowns for photos with the Master, Fellows, family, and friends. Congratulations to the Class of 2015! Music continued to fill the College dining hall during communal dinners throughout the academic year. ANNIKA BHARWANI (Medicine), FARRAH TAM (Medicine), JESSICA CHU (Laws), and ELOISA DAMULO (Integrated BBA) entertained classmates with contemporary vocals. TIMOTHY TIPOE (Medicine), and JOSEPH ZHAO (Social Science), both flautists, performed classical and contemporary pieces while the Master and students enjoyed their meals. The College held its third campus-wide photography competition in March 2014; competition themes were Dissonance, 10, and Balance. Undergraduates from all nine colleges were invited to submit photographs. The panel of judges included

EXCHANGE In 2014-2015, 28 Morningsiders spent one or two semesters on College and/or University-wide exchange programmes on four continents. While Morningside students were studying abroad, the College hosted 41 students from 12 countries. Four Morningsiders – CANDY CHAN (Nursing), NEO CHONG (Global Business), JONATHAN LEE (Professional Accounting), and NANRET SENOK (Laws) – spent one week at Princeton University in late September 2014 on the College’s new short-term exchange programme with Whitman College. Upon his return to Morningside, Jonathan Lee wrote fondly in a piece posted on the College website of Princeton’s beautiful campus, the hexagonal foreign language library of East Pyne Hall, and the Whitman Coffee

House, a once-a-semester gathering of Whitman student performers. Five Whitman students visited us in Hong Kong in March 2015. LIZZIE BUEHLER, CHRISTOPHER CROSS, ALEKSANDRA CZULAK, LOGAN SANDER, and JORGE AUGUSTO SILVA TAPIA attended classes, cultural events, communal dinners, and volunteered at a local food bank alongside their Morningside buddies. This new short-term exchange programme will continue in Fall 2015 when SOPHIE CHEN (Quantitative Finance), NICHOLAS FOK (Medicine), GONG ZIHAO (Integrated BBA), MANNIE KAM (Earth System Science), and LEE HYUNJAE (Chinese Studies) travel to the Princeton campus in September.

MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE

Close to one hundred Morningside students committed several thousand service hours to benefit non-profit service projects around the world in 2014-2015. Many labored locally in Hong Kong and the mainland; others travelled to India, Malaysia, and Vietnam to serve. The College organized three service learning trips: students prepared a library for children on the outskirts of Shaoguan, Guangdong. Another group of Morningsiders constructed a greenhouse for a farming family in Yunnan Province. And a group of eleven students spent two weeks in the United Kingdom at the University of York studying local nonprofit organizations and thinking about service learning in the context of England. The trip provided students a chance to reflect upon the relationship between their experiences in York and social issues that impact societies around the world.

In 2014-2015, DOROTHY LAW (Year 5, Medicine) received the Morningside College Service Award in recognition of her extensive service to others. During her time at Morningside, Dorothy has served Mercy Ships Hospital (Sierra Leone), World Vision, Oxfam, Iris Ministries Orphanage and the Women’s Prevention and Protection Center (both in Nepal).

“…I really want to tell the people here what I experienced in Hong Kong, and what I think would be good for the children’s education, but on the other hand…the fact [that] I’m not from this place makes me wonder if there is a huge difference in the happiness we define for ourselves.” 「…… BAI HAOYUAN (YEAR 4, PHYSICS), STUDENT PARTICIPANT, SHAOGUAN TRIP

“…the goal of architecture is not ‘selfcomplacency’ but ‘service’. And the only way to truly understand that is through volunteering or service learning.” 「…… TARYN HO (YEAR 3, ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES), FEEDING HONG KONG

LOONG CHI WANG (YEAR 2, MEDICINE), STUDENT PARTICIPANT, SHAOGUAN TRIP

M A STER’S REPORT

“…even though our project is one of an extremely small scale, the background issues are really big. For example…children in rural areas have little reading time…because their families would rather [they] spend…time farming or completing homework that directly affects their grades, something leisure reading cannot do. And even if we build a library for these children, it is…possible that the villagers will not appreciate the resource due to distrust towards outsiders. How all this came to be reaches way back to ideologies deeply rooted in the general society and cultural constructs, ideologies that none of us can change…in a short period of time.”

MORNINGSIDE COLLEGE

Morningside College supports both the pursuit of academic excellence and a healthy, vigorous lifestyle. The College’s student-oriented athletics programming makes strong contributions toward this goal. In 2014-2015, Morningsiders competed in badminton, basketball, football, rowing, swimming, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball. Of particular note, Rowers NEO CHONG (Year 2, Integrated BBA) and MATTHEW HUI (Year 2, Medicine) defeated worthy competitors from Shaw and New Asia to take home the gold medal in the Men’s 2X Rowing Competition, giving the College its first gold medal in an Intercollegiate Sports Competition. Congratulations once again, Neo and Matthew! In addition to their many other duties, the College’s dedicated Physical Education instructors, SAMMY LIU and CHRIS YEUNG, organized a series of Fun Days for students – Badminton, Handball, Hiking, Table Tennis, Wing Chun Kuen , Yoga, and Zumba Fitness. Sammy Liu retires in August 2015 after three years of service to Morningside. The College is grateful for his commitment to, and encouragement of, fair play, courtesy, and grace in sports activities of all sorts. Thank you, Sam

On the plaza just outside the College café sit two garden tables shaded by new large umbrellas. Students gather there for conversation, to read quietly, enjoy a sandwich, or simply appreciate the view of Tolo Harbour and Ma On Shan. One level below the plaza, toward the far end of the Dining Hall, a moveable partition has been installed to make way for a “Small Hall”, a quieter space for smaller gatherings and more intimate meals.

COLLEGE INCOME 2014-2015 (Total: 7.8m) 2014-2015

Income fell by 44% from $13.9m to $7.8m in 20142015. The decrease was mainly due to a decline in interest and net investment gain (-$6.4m). Income from Government subvention and donations and matching grants rose slightly to $3.1m and $0.5m respectively, reflecting a 6% and 34% increase over last year.

Other Income

Expenditure in total increased 5.2% over the past year, from $9.5m to $10.0m. The increase in expenditure was due to a $0.6m increase in College operation and a $0.5m increase in scholarships and financial aid awarded.

THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE

To ensure that Morningside College is able to focus on meeting the responsibilities of continuing to provide an outstanding education and a residential environment conducive to the all-round development of its students, continuous effort must be made to solicit other streams of income and reduce costs wherever possible without adversely affecting Morningside’s core objectives. To this end, the Alumni and Development Committee is actively overseeing the implementation of a development strategy and planning a fundraising drive for the coming year.
