NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK

Now in its 72nd year, National Volunteer Week is all about volunteer recognition. This year’s celebration takes place the week of April 6-13, 2014. Canada’s volunteers make a tremendous contribution in communities across the country and around the globe. They make our communities resilient and our country vibrant. Today, volunteers are involved in more ways than ever. Volunteers complete tasks from smartphones while waiting at the bus stop. They sign and share petitions. They govern organizations as board members. They lead rescue efforts when disasters strike. Every day, Canadians lend a hand to their neighbours and friends. Many of them don’t realize that in doing so they’re volunteering. National Volunteer Week pays tribute to the millions of Canadian volunteers who graciously donate their time and talents to our communities. Morinville volunteers will be hosting activities and information sessions at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre during the week. Join us in celebrating volunteerism in Morinville and area. Please visit the Town of Morinville website for more information at www.morinville.ca or contact Town of Morinville Community Services at 780-939-7839. National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. It’s about demonstrating to the nation that by working together, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals. This is the perfect opportunity for your organization and volunteers to seize the moment and share the national spotlight that National Volunteer Week deservedly receives. Simultaneously, you can leverage this brief window of national opportunity to advance your individual cause and promote volunteer commitment in your community.

SNOW ANGELS

The Snow Angel Program is truly, ‘the neighbourly thing to do’. To nominate an individual send an email to kdebenham@morinville.ca with the following information: • • • • • •

Fire Safety Tips Fire Prevention Tips This Winter Smoke Alarms - Change the batteries yearly and make sure to test the Alarm

regularly.

Carbon Monoxide Detector - Very important to have installed in your home along with yearly maintenance and inspection of heating systems and appliances. Overloading of Extensions Cords - Extension cords are a common cause of electrical fires. Use only extension cords that are rated for the power used by the device they are powering. Dryer Fires - Lack of maintenance is the number one cause of dryer fires. That is why it is critical to clean the lint filter before and after each use, and wipe away any lint that has accumulated around the drum. Fireplace Safety - Most chimney fires occur with wood-burning fireplaces. Ensure chimneys are cleaned and professionally inspected regularly. Burn only small quantities of wood at a time. For further information on fire safety call 780-939-6154.
