Manifest means to make evident or certain by showing or displaying, a visible expression of purpose. My work is my statement, the way I make my mark on this world and the means through which I make my dreams and ambitions into realities. I manifest change, I manifest love, and I manifest creativity through them both. I believe that passion and sense of purpose are what make design compelling, and it is through those things that I express who I am. I manifest myself as the designer of my future.

N YOUTH OBJECTIVE Explore a subject dear to you and create a visually stunning account of it. PROCESS I was once a pink haired, spiked-collar-wearing, rebellious teenager who worshipped The Sex Pistols and the Clash. Because the genre is so important to me, Punk is Dead is a historical account of punk rock music, written mostly from memory, which also begs the question is punk dead? I wanted it to have the unique, D.I.Y. feel of a true punk rock artifact. I tore up old show flyers, scanned old magazines, and wrote notes and memories on the scraps to create the book's elements and imagery. The entire piece is homemade, personally printed and bound with hand-torn page edges. The X on the cover is even painted on with a pocket knife.

T

OBJECTIVE Create an experimental typographically-driven 2012 calendar. PROCESS Remember getting real letters in the mail? Holiday cards, invitations, and postcards used to be things to look forward to, and often keepsakes to treasure. I chose to make a calendar that is a tribute to old-fashioned correspondence. It utilizes textured paper, vintage stamps, postmarks, and typography to remind of times gone by. I embellished every page with a small mailbox number frame in which a personalized message can be inserted. Each month also calls out postal holidays and features a short message about how best to keep in touch with loved ones during that particular time of year.

S

OBJECTIVE Design the 5th Edition of Robin Landa's Graphic Design Solutions textbook. PROCESS I was charged with designing one full chapter, the front and back matter, and the cover for the newest edition of a widely-used collegelevel graphic design textbook. Compositors would then be responsible for placing the final content and fleshing out the rest of the book based on my design, which made this an exercise in file set-up, organization, and clarity of process and intent. My work had to be a perfect blueprint for anyone to be able to follow. Meticulously setting up grids, styles, and master pages, accounting for every detail to make sure it followed the apparent logic of the design, and keeping myself from adding or changing any elements that could be of the slightest confusion were all challenges and constraints I had to face in this learning experience. As I visually shaped the chapters that future designers will study, I learned so many lessons myself.

OBJECTIVE Redesign the web presence for Stanford Arts Institute. PROCESS As a client, Stanford University required something conservative enough to uphold its prestigious image. Conversely, the fact that this site was for the arts called for a more imaginative and stimulating aesthetic. The combination of the two came alive in a simple user-friendly interface which houses beautifully saturated photography and adventurously large intro type set in Stanford's signature vivid red. I designed this site as Photoshop flats while at Chen Design Associates, and Stanford then passed it on to a developer. View the live site at artsinstitute.stanford.edu.

OBJECTIVE Develop a cohesive collateral system for a film festival, following a distinct thread in the director's work to create a broad spectrum of relevant items. PROCESS I chose John Waters as my director, and the clear theme of reinventing a community through radical action. The protagonists in Waters' films are always unexpected revolutionaries, each creating a controversy or upheaval that first divides yet ultimately unites their community. Using bright colors, a tabloid newsprint texture, retro-inspired photography styles, and the crude, flippant lingo of Waters' dialogue, the pieces have the cheap, smarmy-yet-charming look and feel of Hairspray, Cry-Baby, A Dirty Shame, Serial Mom, and Pecker.

OBJECTIVE Creatively and effectively illustrate individual articles throughout many issues of the bi-monthly California Freemason magazine. PROCESS As Chen Design Associates is responsible for designing each issue of the magazine, I have worked on a few of these editorial illustrations throughout my time at the studio. The challenge with each illustration is to keep within fairly tight time and budget constraints while still creating a unique and compelling solution that works with the space and is relevant to the subject matter. The media used to create these various designs may be vector illustration, composite photography, typographic treatments, collages, hand-made elements, and combinations of the above.

old pub whiskey

OBJECTIVE Create a timeline using units of measure other than time. Use a format appropriate to the subject matter. PROCESS Old Pub whiskey is a tribute to a bar I managed for years in my Southern hometown. I chose to memorialize a typical Thursday night bar shift for my timeline, and did so on a pull-out infographic behind the back label of a whiskey bottle. The graphic uses drink orders, tips earned, band sets, bar fights, and shift breaks as units of measure. The front label features an illustration of the bar's 19th century exterior, and the back label tells a bit about my fond memories of working in my old pub.

O

OBJECTIVE Create a magazine that unites fashion photography with expressive typography. PROCESS I used this opportunity to feature Oregon-based fashion designer and photographer Carey Haider. His gritty yet romantic style set the stage for elegantly charismatic typographic solutions. For the two editorial features, I chose counterculture fashion and art bloggers whom I admire, doing a write-around on artist, photographer, and model Zoetica Ebb while using a popular article on warm-weather must-haves from "International Playgirl" Gala Darling. Each provided me with an interesting opportunity for layout, and Gala's writing led to interestingly graphic body copy typesetting, as she writes using a combination of web shorthand, multi-lingual expressions, and enthusiastic punctuation.
