Rural funding boost

to North Notts Business Magazine

It would appear to have been silly season over the past few weeks with temperatures rising and falling by up to 20°c, interesting revelations in the Chancellor’s Budget such as the ”pasty tax” and threats of national fuel tanker driver strikes, causing panic petrol buying, queues and shortages which turned out to be a bit of a storm in a teacup. In order to better represent the businesses in our area and add clarity, you will have noticed from the front cover that we have changed the name of this dedicated B2B publication to the North Notts Business Magazine. We hope this will go towards helping to put this part of the county and it’s businesses on the map and highlight the many positives of this amazing emerging business region. I have recently attended two Scrutiny Review meetings with Bassetlaw District Council in respect of evidence gathering for Pride in Bassetlaw and Review of Attracting New Businesses to Rural Areas. It’s very encouraging to see the sterling efforts that are being made by the local authorities, other local organisations, including the new

Worksop Civic Society, along with the support from businesses and the wider community. This again illustrates the amount of hard work that is going on behind the scenes to bring improvements and a brighter future to both businesses and residents across the district. The coming months are set to hold lots of excitement and celebration across the country, and here in North Notts we look forward to welcoming you all to the second North Notts Business and Innovation Show on Thursday, 14th June. With the incredible support and enthusiasm that the show is receiving from local business, it promises to be a very productive day for all. In the meantime, we hope that you will join us at our NNBC Breakfast Networking event on 30th May at Hodsock Priory where North Notts Business Connections will be celebrating its 4th Anniversary. We hope that you enjoy this edition of the magazine, and look out in our next issue for announcements launching one of our forthcoming initiatives, North Notts Business Women.

Dive right in: Some of the work by Natural Pools UK

Rural funding boost There’s good news for projects in our rural business communities. Bassetlaw District Council has announced that the Notts Rural Enterprise Action Group (NREAG) has been awarded a further £101,000 of funding from DEFRA to support its LEADER programme. This award has been made due to the high level of success that the North Notts programme has achieved to date. LEADER is a European Union funded programme which supports innovative and sustainable local rural development projects. The NREAG scheme operates over Bassetlaw and Newark & Sherwood and provides grant support to rurally based businesses to:

Natural Pools UK

Natural Pools UK design and landscape natural swimming pools with negligible impact on the environment and which use no chemicals whatsoever, wholly relying upon plants to clean the water. The pools do not need constant emptying and refilling, require relatively little maintenance and attract lots of wildlife.

LEADER assisted with the build of the show pool at Ellicar and was entered under the micro enterprise budget. Work started here in July 2010 with the initial plans drawn up; the pool was filled up in November 2010. For further details of the Notts Rural Enterprise Action Group, LEADER grant availability and eligibility visit

• Diversify a land-based business • Support a micro-enterprise (less than 10 employees) • Support rural tourism • Provide bespoke training to support the above The additional funding awarded is being made available as matched funding grants for rural businesses. Recent successes which have helped to secure this additional funding include the following case studies:

Low Impact Timber Extraction

Quickthorne Tree Care applied to LEADER for funding for an Iron Horse, a specific bit of kit that will help Nick Wilkinson to harvest more willow and so increase his turnover. This project involves woodland management, hedge laying, coppicing and producing coppice products, tree planting and maintenance, and rights of way maintenance. It came under the LEADER project’s micro enterprise budget. Nick has many clients including wildlife trusts, local authorities, estates, landowners and private clients. |

Brewing for success! On a night of triumph for Bassetlaw, the best businesses from around the region gathered at Hodsock Priory on 22nd March 2012 to celebrate excellence, innovation and outstanding achievements at the second annual North Notts Business Awards. Emerging victorious against fellow finalists Jamie Hempsall Ltd and Focus Accounting, local brewery Springhead Fine Ales Ltd was presented with the Company of the Year Award by sponsors Alexander Calder Financial Ltd. A Charity Raffle was also held on the night with some spectacular prizes generously

donated by many of our local businesses, and which raised £640.00 for NNBC’s chosen charity for 2012, Bassetlaw Women’s Royal Voluntary Service. Our thanks go once again to all who made the awards such a success including sponsors, judges, supporters and contributors. The North Notts Business Awards for 2013 will be launched in September 2012 and we look forward to entries from across all sectors of retail, trade and industry. Sponsors for next year’s awards are invited to register their interest at the earliest opportunity in readiness for September’s launch.

Keep your cash flowing A healthy cash flow is the lifeblood for any business and for those exploring financing vehicles for a growing business the options may sometimes seem confusing. When considering business cash flow finance there are two clear groups of funders. The high street banks (and their factoring subsidiaries) and the independent specialist receivables finance companies. There are several important issues which distinguish the independents from the ‘Big Banks’ and it pays not to ignore the additional support that can be provided by the latter. Due to the scale and the nature of their operations, banks will invariably be bound by rule-books and that means red tape. This is a major disadvantage for owner managers who have little time to devote to administration.

Alternatively, companies actually need working capital finance that is based on present performance, not the balance sheet ratios of the past, and that will always keep pace with sales in the future. With an independent financier, there tends to be a greater focus on building stronger, longer-lasting relationships. Unlike a transactional banking relationship, the owner manager may well have access to the directors of the invoice finance company. Their experience, as business people in their own right, gives them a special insight into a client’s individual aspirations and plans. This understanding enables the independent

Factoring is designed to maximise cash flow whilst removing the burden of running the sales ledger. The invoice finance company will agree a prepayment facility against qualifying invoices. Typically this is set at about 80% of invoice value, but in some circumstances this might be even higher. Vital cash is released immediately, ready to be put to work where it’s needed most!

Invoice Discounting is increasingly viewed as the fastest growing alternative to bank overdraft funding. It enables businesses to maximise cash flow by raising funds against the value of sales invoices. This facility is used to great effect in refinancing working capital, restructuring and management buy-outs or buy-ins. Services can be offered on a fully confidential or a disclosed basis structured to suit a company’s specific circumstances and preference. Most importantly with invoice discounting, clients retain full control over their sales ledger, credit control and debt collection functions. For this reason, it is often thought to be more suitable for companies who have strong systems and dedicated internal credit control resource. Nevertheless, independent financiers consider each client business individually, making every effort to reflect preferences within the final structure of the facility, irrespective of size, years established and many other criteria (considered by bankers to be “conventional wisdoms”).

The factoring company will provide a comprehensive sales ledger administration, credit control and collection service specifically tailored to suit customers and their sensitivities. This means that clients will have immediate and real time access to all their account details and the fastest possible access to cash as and when it is needed.

Our flexible approach to business accommodation gives you full control of how long you wish to stay - easy in easy out.

George’s ambient budget news… George Osborne’s third budget included many previously announced changes; however there were some unexpected announcements. This article focuses on a few of the key issues likely to affect you, your family and your business.

Personal Tax

The personal allowance for 2012/13 will increase to £8,105, currently £7,475 this increase is greater than the minimum required and is part of the plan to ultimately raise the allowance to £10,000. Where an individual has income in excess of £100,000 the personal allowance is reduced and is completely lost once income reaches £116,210. The basic rate of tax continues to be 20% and the band of income taxed at this rate has been reduced in line with the personal allowance meaning you do not pay higher rate tax until your earnings exceed £42,475 as in the previous tax year.

buildings. The legislation is currently full of grey areas, in particular the definition of repairs which are subject to the standard rate of VAT versus that of an “approved alterations” which benefit from the zero-rate. This leads to what HMRC have deemed a perverse incentive to alter a listed building rather than repair it. Alterations on other buildings do not benefit from the zero rate treatment and therefore it is felt that owners of listed buildings are gaining a tax advantage.

rate to all food which when provided to the customer is at a temperature above the ambient air temperature. In addition to hot food being reviewed the rate of VAT applicable to nutritional sports drinks is also being clarified. Some sports drinks currently benefit from zero-rating but the proposal is to change the legislation so that all sports drinks are subject to the standard rate. The chancellor also Michelle Allen ACA CTA announced a major Wright Vigar Chartered Accountants change to the VAT 01777 707373 | legislation in respect of works to protected

Business & Corporation Tax

The small profits corporation tax rate remains at 20%, whilst the main rate has reduced by 2% to 24%. Further reductions are planned. A significant change which had been previously announced was a reduction in the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA). When a business invests in capital equipment such as plant or commercial vehicles, relief is given on the full cost up to £25,000; previously £100,000 which represents a significant change. Furthermore capital expenditure in excess of this amount is written down at a rate of 18% or 8% against profits, representing a reduction of 2% from the previous year’s rates. It was also announced that a simplified system for taxation of small business is to be consulted on.

Know the feeling?

There were some unexpected announcements in respect of VAT and you will have properly heard much debate on the potential for charging VAT on a pasty. The current legislation in the area of hot takeaway food is increasingly confusing and can result in similar products being taxed at different rates. HMRC’s are aiming to ensure all food is treated equitably. The proposal announced will come into effect from 1 October 2012 and this change will apply VAT at the standard |
