for those who desire to take the road less traveled.
We’ve all watched our favorite YouTubers on the road, with scenic vistas around every bend and drone footage rivaling the best Hollywood movies As the day fades to evening we’ve seen 5-star meals cooked and shared with great friends over an epic campsite view and an amazing campfire. The night rings out with emotion filled stories of the day’s exploits and the laughter marking their camaraderie. Not able to make these trips our full time occupation, we nonetheless long for that sense of exploration, that feeling of discovery, the company of minded friends, and the bonds formed with new people as the anticipation of our travels are unerringly replaced with our sense of accomplishment. Many things go into planning a trip so we can make all this happen, so let’s talk about that transition from dadchair to driver’s seat: Trip Planning
Depending on how you learn, you may find these things useful:
The video I made on this very topic at Tales from the North Overland Youtube channel.
Google Sheet I made (see page 14.)
As you read, it’s helpful to follow along in the spreadsheet and see how it’s handled. It’s going to seem a bit too detailed and maybe even a bit daunting The great thing is that after you do this once, future trips are much easier. I just duplicate the last sheet I made for the next trip.
BY DON ALLEYThe first thing we ask ourselves is “Where should we go?”. The reality is we’ve all seen hundreds of cool places in these videos, and want to go there ourselves. Sometimes we see interesting destinations in a news article or in different genres of media. We have many avenues of input for information. We just need to accumulate it in a meaningful way before it slips into the march of our day
The trick is to simply write down the things we see, the places we want to go, and the experiences we want to have, as we are introduced to them. How we write them down is key, though. My preference is to use my usual To-Do List on my phone We probably all have such a list in one form or another. An old Franklin Planner, the task list on our phones, sending a text to ourselves, whatever. Just make sure it's easily accessible and there are no “laziness barriers'' to adding to it. Post It notes on your desk or the dry erase board on the fridge isn’t good for this; you’ll forget to add it Whatever the mechanism, make a spot where you can start to accumulate these ideas.
After a time, you’re going to have quite a list That’s the goal Now we need to turn our list into usable data. Since most of us aren’t doing adventure travel full time, we are working
within a budget and some time constraints In other words, we’re using vacation days that we need to maximize. .
The way to turn our list of destinations into usable data is to represent them geographically. So, take that list, and make a Google Map, or a Gaia folder, or similar. I use Gaia for this because of its versatility. The important thing is you can see where these are. During this step, if you have absolute must-do favorites, using a waypoint marker system with priority helps Red for “I definitely want to do that” and blue for “That’d be cool”, for instance. This doesn’t have to be anything more than a set of waypoints right now. The important thing is they are in a single folder that you can turn on and off as needed.
Once you’ve accumulated some ideas, there’s a good chance you’re going to see some destinations clustered on the map. Whether it be trails in Utah, mountain roads in Colorado, or backcountry travel in the woodlands of Michigan, you’re likely to have enough destinations to fill that 2 week vacation you’ve got coming to you. And, if you’re fortunate enough to have made adventure travel a full time endeavor, you already know that exploring clustered points of interest gets you maximum content with minimum travel.
I should mention… I’m an engineer. I’m a nerd. I tend to think in processes. You’ll see a lot of that here, and especially in this section The good thing is that I can’t watch you rolling your eyes while you read this. Just bear through this section. It gets easier after this. That being said, this section is the ‘hub’ which interacts with every other section.
Now that we have a general idea of where we want to go, we need to start getting people on board. People come with their own needs, their own wants, and their own constraints. If this is a family trip, it’s easier. You know what each family member brings and what they want If its an organized trip, you have to ensure you’re addressing a number of things.
Open up that Google Sheet at the top of this article and follow along on the Objectives tab Each person going on the trip most likely has some say in how things are going to go. These factors are:
Needs: This is what the trip MUST accomplish. If you’re hitting the entirety of the Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route, and the trip is presented as such, everyone who signs up is going to have the expectation that this is the trip’s objective.
Nice to Have: These are the things that would be nice to accomplish, but not as high priority as a need
Constraints: These are the limiting factors in play that have to be considered while pursuing the needs Things like duration of trip, how much you have to spend, the range of your vehicle on a tank of gas, how long Aunt Martha is willing to spend in a vehicle each day…
Some things can be both needs and constraints. For instance if you have to get lots of pictures for the ‘Gram, you have a need (must generate content) Likewise, you have a constraint because getting that perfect shot takes time. Walking up to set up the camera and going to retrieve it for that ‘drive by’ footage adds up. Really actually listen to all the people on the trip. Get together on Zoom or whatever. Take the time to understand the expectations (needs) and the limiting factors (constraints). Write them down.
Some things are needs but we don’t think of them Weather monitoring, lists of nearby medical facilities, etc. Like I said above, this page is going to be the hub by which everything else is built around for this trip This is the page where people will have a say in what happens. This is where they can see their concerns are met. This is where the technical limitations are factored in Most importantly, as ideas evolve, this page (and your destinations map) are where you’ll start to detect that things might be getting too big for just one trip (mission creep)
Where are we going each day and where are we ending up? How will we fill our fridges, batteries, fuel tanks, and bellies?
This is where the trip gets mapped out. This is where the routes get put in on the Nav program. Where are we starting, what are we seeing along the way, where are we stopping?
There’s a whole bunch of How-To’s on using nav programs, and I don’t have the space to do it here, but just know that working on that at this phase is important Ensure your items for this trip are original “Trip Remember h hub of thin bounce aro spreadsheet constraints o vehicle capa need to be difficulty, etc bail out poin hospitals on needs to get where puttin way can help for lunch.
Equally impo of peoples’ fo Build in resu to do these know I need grocery, wat idea to build facility every with electric nearby laun here’s the p you’re eating
skottle (are you really overlanding if you don t have one?), his Trasharoo is full of McDonald bags from getting food on the road most of the way there. Your itinerary should show travel to/from days, and anticipated meals that need to be bought and prepared. I just put ‘road’ on mine to signify it’ll be a “0.1 miles from the exit” meal If there is a must-stop-at restaurant, include that in the itinerary, too On an Upper Peninsula trip we built in a stop at Muldoons Pasties in Munising just because we heard great things about them
Take the time to understand the expectations (needs) and the limiting factors (constraints.) Write them down.
While building the itinerary, it’s a good time to build up costs and expenses. You’ll have an idea of where you’re going, which will help inform on miles traversed for fuel estimates, as well as any tolls and entrance fees that may be needed. The resupply points will of course have costs associated with them
This also helps ensure trip members understand what costs are associated with what activity and what is expected of them All these little things help flesh out the trip, they help form the ultimate routes taken and why. But equally importantly, they demonstrate to your participants that their concerns are being met. It informs a lot of information about the adventure and turns ‘your’ trip into ‘their’ trip.
At this point, we have our destination(s) planned out, whether they be trails we will run, a series of campsites we must stay at, a myriad of points of interest we will explore, or activities we will do in our needs and constraints page.
Now we have to identify all the things necessary to support the trip Some of them will be group items and some will be individual items. We need to get a handle on it all and coordinate with others to ensure we have the stuff needed
Did I say ‘stuff’? It’s really the ‘stuff and skills’! Our ‘packing list’ needs to include whatever training items we need to utilize the stuff. A compass with no orienteering skills doesn’t help that much. Cracking open a first aid kit in a time of need and feeling a wave of perplexedness wash over us at the sight of hundreds of little white wrapped items doesn’t help our injured friend.
Here’s a list of categories of stuff you may need Keep in mind your space constraints in your vehicle. It’s important to remember that a full spreadsheet doesn’t mean a full vehicle and vice versa A “driver’s license” in one cell takes up the same amount of spreadsheet space as “Folding table” in another cell. It’s not the size of the spreadsheet, it’s how you use it.
Logistics: Drivers licenses, insurance slips, vehicle registrations, campsite reservations, ORV permits, medical info, spare keys left with another driver, cash, and credit cards Make sure you have the documentation needed. A Trip Notebook is a great way to store all this information
Vehicle support: Most ‘overland’ travel is vehicle based. The vehicle needs to run. So this is all the stuff that helps ensure that Spare tire and jack, recovery gear, spare fluids, spare gas if needed.
Power and electronics: There’s always the one guy that thinks he’s being ‘pure outdoorsman’ with an old 1975 Toyota, a hatchet, compass, and paper map Sure thing, mountain man For the rest of us, we have phones, cameras, drones, emergency signaling devices, handheld transceivers, GPSs, etc. We need a way to keep them all running for the duration of the trip. Put that stuff in this column.
Navigation: Gotta get where we’re going Phone, in-vehicle display, handheld GPS, and the know-how to use it. Ensure all the waypoints and routes you created before are transferred over I like to use GaiaGPS for this, as the items I create sync between my phone, tablet, and computer. Since cell service is often unavailable in the far places of our exploration, ensure the maps are downloaded locally to your device. GaiaGPS does this well. Consider making a set of hardcopy maps in the trip notebook or a Delorme Atlas as a backup
Communications: Don’t rely exclusively on cell phones. Many overlanders use GMRS radios to communicate inter-vehicle The vehiclemounted ones can get great range. Pro tip: Have a couple handhelds as well for awayfrom-vehicle activity.
Camp: Here’s all the things needed to make camp for the night. Tent, sleeping bag, chairs, portable fire ring, pop-up privy, clothes lines, a folding table maybe? What makes camp your camp?
Kitchen: All the things you’ll need to preserve and prepare the meals The Itinerary tab should show what’s being made. Time to ensure the stuff needed to make it (kitchen items) is packed and ingredients anticipated
Personal hygiene, clothing, etc: These columns are for the individual to list what they’re packing If you have a group, it can be a bit abashing to list out grooming supplies but there’s a good chance that seeing others’ lists will help others remember things too. Proudly add those wet wipes to your list
Other support: If your trip has day hiking, make a column for what’s needed Kayaking somewhere? Include that stuff Photography and video equipment should be here as well.
TRAINING: As you make your list, ensure you know how to use each of the items you’re packing. If you don’t know, add it to your ToDo list and get the training needed.
Whew. You’ve stuck with this. You’ve got your whole crew on board. You agree with the trip’s objectives You have all the things and training needed to support it Here’s the sanity check Go over each day in your head. Each activity. Envision it, envision what you need to do it. Ensure your list has it on it Ensure you’ve bought it.
Get together with your teammates. Talk it all through Confirm it's there Confirm all the reservations are made. Confirm the permits have been pulled. Ask your buddies when they changed their oil last. Take the time to scrutinize the maps, the lists, everything This isn’t a time for pride, it’s a time to work together to ensure things are complete.
For the items in your control, check them out as you pack them. Make sure they’re in good working order. Sharpen that knife you packed, make sure the handheld radio has a new battery. Make sure how you’re packing it will protect it as needed.
Honestly, have fun You did all this prep work You took seriously what needed to be taken seriously. It was a lot of work, and now it’s time to enjoy the reward Remember the picture painted in the first two paragraphs of this long
winded article? Allow yourself the opportunity to experience it all. Get caught up in the scenic vistas, feel the sense of discovery around that bend, enjoy the food, the fire, and the camaraderie that you worked so hard to make Truly understand the smiles, the banter, and the laughs are all, in a big part, due to people having everything they need and are enjoying this trip Smile, overlander, you got this!
Don’t let all your planning be a straightjacket. Things happen on the road That flat tire may preclude a stop someone wanted. The trail may be washed out. Someone could get injured. You might hear of the ultimate restaurant to eat at that was nowhere on your list. For all the planning we did here, we must ensure we maintain a fluid and adaptable mindset. Our plans were but a plan. Be safe, be smart, be cooperative, and enjoy!
What went well? What didn’t? Who did you work well with? Who didn’t enjoy this type of adventure? What recipes were great? What ones were too hard to prepare on the trail? What was top notch gear that worked proper and what was hot garbage? What skills did you need that you didn’t have?
For the costs tab, consider duplicating the tab and making an estimated and actual one. See how close the predictions were. Especially for
food and fuel, it will better inform the next trip on costs. These are all things that we engineering types call a feedback loop. Our ‘outputs’ (the sum of our experiences) become ‘inputs’ (our planning insight) for the next iteration. It’s fine to make notes in the spreadsheet, update things, move things around, etc Like what was said in the intro, the first time through this planning process takes some time. After that, new copies of this sheet continuously refine how you do stuff.
At some point, it’s great to journal things so years later the handwriting, ink, pages, and sketches bring back the experiences from the far away recesses of your mind While we did most of the things on a spreadsheet, I really recommend a tangible notebook for journaling. Let team members write in it, too. Fill the pages with shared experiences and amazing stories. I sincerely hope this planning method helps you reduce anxiety, get an organized approach to trip planning, and ultimately get out there and fill that journal!

Participated in 2022 & 2023 Rebelle Rally Rookie, Rebelle Rally 2024
Fun fact about Lisa I became a grandma for the first time while I was at the Rebelle in 2022, not many kids can say their grandma was doing a 10 day navigation rally in the southwest when they were born I am also the first woman President of my off-road club, Midwest Krawlers, that has over 500 paid members, and for the first time, more women than men on the board
Katie Abraham Charleston, WV @wildkatieabes

Fun fact about Katie I grew up riding and showing American Saddlebred horses and majored in Equine Science and Equestrian Administration my freshman year of college. I hope to "retire" early and have a small lesson program for kids/teens/students
Cara McClellan Conway, Arkansas @wondersloth83
Fun fact about Cara I love medium format photography and my Frenchie, Goose My husband is pretty ok too Haha
Danielle Noonan Oxford, MS @secondoverland
Fun fact about Danielle
Rookie, Rebelle Rally 2024
Lots of people think I’m rough around the edges I am in a lot of ways. I love roughing it hard in the woods, driving trucks, getting really dirty and ride motorcycles too hard (and fall a lot) But at home I bake sourdough bread, crochet all the things, raise chickens, cook home cooked meals for my family everyday and love being a wife and mom. So I guess my fun fact is, there’s a side most people don’t know about me
What motivated you to participate in the Rebelle Rally, and what do you hope to gain from this unique experience?
Danielle- “About 4 years ago, after first reading about Rebelle Rally, I was motivated by thinking how cool it would be to participate in this rally That still motivates me But what really motivates me now, is the challenge this rally is and will continue to be It’s not just a navigation and driving competition but an endurance competition. I’m a rookie and have already been challenged in so many ways mentally and emotionally The massive learning curve of all things land navigation is daunting many days. I have to push myself even when I want to just throw in the towel some days But let me tell you how much FUN this entire experience has been! I have learned so much and truly get excited thinking about being able to grab a compass, map and be able to find my way without the use of technology I’m also crazy excited to be competing with some of the best women rally drivers and navigators out there!”
Cara- “I had heard of the Rebelle Rally previously but hadn’t thought of entering until I met Danielle She said, “We should do this!”, and I said “OK!!” Haha. And that was that! I hope to gain confidence in myself and my capabilities as a driver I want to discover that I can accomplish the hard things.”
Lisa- “At first it was being asked by my friend Katie Abraham to be her partner, then it evolved into being a part of an experience that gives you so many valuable lessons when you least expect it, and sometimes in the most stressful situations. It has taught me that no matter what I am challenged with I can do it. “
Katieorigina ing ne ence li skill, a seat ti grow a get th love it friends differe but at people Can y experi off-roa the Re Daniel adven being time. somet unfortu during is tem RR is temporary “
Katie- “Teaching off-road driving technique, recovery, and safety, has been huge for prepping I'm constantly learning and advancing my own skills, so I can help others fall in love with this sport like I have I always learn something new because someone will ask a question a new way or asks something I've not encountered and then the instructors discuss. “
“As a rookie, I have been blown away by how much support there is from past and future Rebelles From the beginning, right after we registered for 2024, we were welcomed by Rebelle Rally staff The communication and relationships we have developed with people we haven’t even met in person yet, has really eased my nerves about this rally. ”
-DanielleCara- “I know I was terrified to tackle Pritchett Canyon...but I wanted to conquer it it’s the reason I built my jeep to be what it is today So I showed up, and I pushed myself. It was hard, but I did it. Obstacle after obstacle I’ll never forget that day If you push yourself outside of your comfort zone, you’ll find that strength is yours for the taking. A lot of times we stop and quit right before we experience that breakthrough moment. I wasn’t
going to quit then and won’t quit pursuing this goal of conquering the Rally I’m just stubborn like that ”
Lisa- “What prepared me the most as a driver this last year was focusing on using 4H & 4L at the appropriate times for the different terrain. I took my Jeep to Colorado and put it to the test on Holy Cross trail so I could understand and learn how to put all of that to work to my advantage. Holy Cross is 8 2 miles long and can take a full day to do, it was an amazing day full of challenges and beautiful views. “
How do events like the Rebelle Rally contribute to the empowerment and visibility of women in the overlanding and off-road community and how do you approach the challenges of participating as a woman and overcome obstacles or biases?
Lisa- “One of the lessons I learned from off-roading is women are usually better than men at getting through a difficult spot, women have more patience and the skill to take a step back and evaluate their situation As far as overcoming situations in a male-dominated sport, I hold my head high, don’t bullshit, and do my best. It has always been easier for me to hang out with the guys and do “guy stuff”, so that has helped me a lot. “
Cara- “It’s really huge what Emily Miller and team have accomplished in regards to visibility for women in a (mostly) male dominated industry Many ladies that compete are moms, wives, business women, healthcare professionals, etc. We all have multiple roles in life, but at the core, we all want to be seen for something deeper than a label based on title. We just have to keep showing up and proving them wrong We have to keep standing up for other women. Clap for each other. Our competition needs to be within ourselves “
Danielle- “There have been women in years past that I think did much of the initial hard work to increase visibility of women in these communities. I think all these women are due many thanks today. I am fortunate that I have had minimal obstacles and biases. I think there needs to be more of women cheering other women on Stop comparing yourselves to each other Stop trying to one up each other. Start being your best and advocating for each other Start encouraging one another to go tackle the hard and scary things. Not every woman has the support behind them you may have so YOU be that encouraging voice they need to hear ”
Katie- “The Rebelle Rally is very special, I think it truly breaking down barriers to help women expan themselves both professionally and personal These events, and all events that are supporting t push to increase women's presence in the indust are giving women a chance to step in front of t decision makers that make dreams come true wi one signature on a contract It's that direct line that opens doors. I typically don't think too much about the obstacles of being a woman I just focus on my dreams and goals and put in the time and effort to get there. I do think it's important to bring awareness around the fact that only 3% of the industry is women, but I think the way to change that is to make noise by being bold, daring, and dedicated ”
How does the MOORE Expo influence or inspire you on your journey to the Rebelle Rally?
What advice would you give to other women who are interested in getting involved in off-road navigation and rallying and the Rebelle Rally?
Cara- “Just do it!!. You’ll screw up. You’ll make mistakes You’ll learn more about yourself, your capabilities and even your weaknesses But don’t let any of that stop you. We aren’t made to just exist. We are made to live So do it There’s always something that can stop you not having a good idea of maps, not having a certain vehicle, not having enough money Don’t let your excuses be the reason. You won’t see how far you can go if you just stay where you are Push yourself “
Lisa- “Two words: self confidence. Then, learn as much as you can I had never used a compass, a scale ruler for finding latitude & longitude points on a map, or used degrees on a map to find a location. Attention to detail will take you far ”
Danielle- “Sit down and make a list of why you want to do it Make a list of what is holding you back from doing it and come up with ways you can make this list smaller The best way to make this list smaller would be to reach out to others who have already done it or will be doing it. Join the Unofficial Rebelle Rally FB planning group ASK QUESTIONS! Don’t think it will be easy because it certainly is not. Definitely plan on making lifelong friendships through the process ”
Katie- “Your skill level, experience, connections, vehicle capability, wilderness abilities, etc, as you are today don't matter. What matters is what you love, your dreams, and the drive you have to make them reality. Don't take the "no's" to heart. You're
Cara- “I friggin LOVE the MOORE Expo. Matt and I were all-in back when Chris first came to us with his crazy idea. And look how far it’s come. At MOORE there are so many opportunities, and it can totally be what you want it to be You want to grab a new skillet for a casual off-road weekend. Done Want to travel the globe full time and figure out what you need in your vehicle Got it Or maybe you want to start an entrepreneurial company and need to network You can do that here too! You learn valuable education, discover new products, and even hear from those you may not never know their story at the MOORE Expo And so much more! It’s what you make of it. It’s an incredible community, and I’m super thankful to be a small part of it The sky is the limit, and I’m here for it! “
Lisa- “The off-road/over-landing community is a family, and being a part of that is priceless. Chris and his team have made the MOORE Expo each year like going to a family reunion, it gives you a chance to catch up, talk about your adventures, and compare stories of things you’ve learned, only we don’t have to make the potato salad and hope it gets eaten. Thank you Chris for everything you’ve done to make this feel like home ”
Katie- “I couldn't be here without Chris, The MOORE Expo, and so many other people involved ”
Danielle- “Attending the MOORE Expo as an official Rebelle Rally competitor with my teammate, Cara, is going to be one of my favorite events of the year! Our team has had an outpouring of love and support from so many people, including Chris, and I am ever thankful for that.”

“Cooking and eating food outdoors makes it taste infinitely better than the same meal prepared and consumed indoors.” Fennel Hudson, Fine Things: Fennel’s Journal No. 8
Many days we are faced with the “what’s for dinner?” question. It is a main course of indecision surrounded by a side of angst and a dessert of silence It is funny how often we find ourselves in this situation.
Preparation is key to being a highly regarded camp chef. We figure out how long we will be gone, hammer out a menu, pick up items, fill the fridge, and we are ready to go.
When preparing meals, I start with questions. How many breakfasts, lunches and dinners will there be? Will I want to slave over a hot stove? Will I want to cook every meal? What about a picnic? I then move to proteins and think how to surround the main dish with amazing sides.
Once you have all these set in place, make your shopping list. When you return home, prep what you can. Marinate and/or season accordingly Put meals together in Gallon Freezer bags placing in fridge to stay organized. For me, the actual cooking of the meal is the fun, while the prep work is just like it says work Get ahead of the game and narrow it down to what is enjoyable.
Cajun Sausage Pineapple Bites
IngredientsCajun Sausage/Kielbasa pineapple toothpicks
seasoning
Directions - Slice sausage into 1/2" rounds and brown with a tsp of oil on medium hot grill or skillet. Cut pineapple into chunks. When sausage is brown, place pineapple on toothpick (top) and then sausage (bottom) and stand up. Dust with sweet/spicy seasoning.
Let’s be honest, we love cooking and eating outside. If you did not, you most likely would not be this far into this article and would have moved on to look at cool rig pics I get that I do that too. But I also love to eat and that’s why I cook. It is a vicious cycle. What keeps most from enjoying their time is they try and do too much Even though I religiously watch cooking competitions, I am not out to impress any judges. I just want to eat good food, so let’s keep it simple - elevating simple dishes to make them taste good.
Buy it small. Find individual packets to save on leftovers and having to store unused items.
Buying pre-cooked items will save time, space, and conserve cooking fuel.
Prep as much before heading to camp This will give you less time doing tedious work and more time enjoying the campfire and visiting with friends
Make things you have already made before. Do your practice at home and then you will be able to modify whatever you need to in order to create the perfect meal
Ingredients
Pre-cooked pasta (in Asian section of supermarket, the key is the pasta being already cooked.)
your favorite Asian sauce
your choice of veggies (I love carrots, onion or shallots, poblano peppers, cherry tomatoes, arugula)
your choice of meat (pork chops, pork loin, chicken, steak or shrimp all work well) The key is the pasta being already cooked Directions - Brown meat in skillet or Skottle (small amount of oil), mix in veggies until done, add amount of sauce you like Add in pasta for about 2 minutes and then done! Serve with fire toasted baguette or your favorite bread.
Desserts are some of the most fun and draw the most attention at camp. Whether you pull out the Dutch oven, the pop-up Coleman Oven or try out the new Omnia Oven, you are likely to draw a crowd from those waiting around the campfire. They smell good, warm the soul, and tease the palette into satisfaction just before it is time to retire for a long night’s rest Desserts are fun for me since I have learned how to make easy ones. It has taken a few years of practice and about a million TikTok videos to figure out which ones are easiest and bring the most smiles from those at camp. Whether you are cooking for 2 or 20, you can find one, practice and perfect it so that you are the Dessert Hero and deemed Camp Chef.
Better than Peach Pie

Harmony or dissonance. Marriage or divorce. It was a weekend to Windrock Park where we were going to be doing driver swaps: The husbands of the group, who for us typically do most of the driving on trips, swapping to be the passengers, while the wives took the wheel for a weekend of getting comfortable with the vehicle and learning the ins and outs of adventure travel. This trip was to be called, The Patient Partners Perilous Pathfinding Practice Program (PPPPPP for short) But, you see, it’s not the trip itself that is the real story, but the history of how this trip came to be. The trip was being planned by four couples, who just a few years ago did not know each other It was other trips, gatherings, and adventures, planned by others, that led to conversations between these strangers which would create friendships foundational to future adventures like that of the PPPPP.
If you are like us, you may travel hours to meet up with like-minded individuals to hit the trails and camp. Once you are at your destination and ready for the day’s adventures, it’s back in the vehicle Maybe you have a companion, furry or otherwise, or maybe you ride solo; but either way, like everyone else in your convoy, you are separated by a few car lengths of distance This is where the in-vehicle radio, commonly a GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) radio, can enhance the trip.
When we started traveling in groups, we saw the radios as for instruction or emergency purposes. Miss a turn? Get on the radio. Need a spotter? Holler! Need to pull over for a bio break? Yeah, us too thanks for speaking up And depending on your background, this mentality can be drilled into you, as the case of Chad who we traveled with last year You see, Chad was formerly in the Army (if you asked him how long he’s been retired, he’d tell you to the day…no matter what day you asked him), and he was initially caught off guard with all the discretionary radio chatter on one of our trips, because it was instilled in him that the radio was for business only. On this trip, we had questions about adventure stories, advice on vehicle mods, and favorite snacks all being thrown over the air. Although it took him some time to get used to it and he often didn’t partake in over-the-air banter, he shared with us how engaging it was for those in his vehicle to listen to the conversation and discuss the answers amongst themselves It also gave us all something to come together and re-live or expand upon when we got to camp.
It is amazing what some small conversations with strangers can lead to. Reminiscing on stories of shared hobbies. Establishing business ventures and partnerships. Or learning about deep, mutual life experiences, such as finding someone else who has had the experience of being a foster parent and sharing the love and heartache of the system
Over the years, conversations started on the trails have personally led us to amazing friendships all around the country, and even world These friendships, in turn, result in additional adventures to create this infinite circle of more conversations, more friendships, and more adventures. So, whether you are a campfire chronicler or a radio raconteur, keep telling those stories because it’s the trail chatter that will continue to build this community
-Paul and Bethany Gunnels, Radio Chatter – The Ultimate Conversation Starter Game for Adventurers
Getting stuck is something we know is likely to happen when traveling off-road. Sometimes we choose a line that is not favorable, our electronic traction aids are not engaged, we forget to put the vehicle in 4-wheel drive, the terrain, lack of clearance, and the list goes on.
One reason for the lack of traction is the open differential working against us off-road Essential for allowing each wheel or front and rear axles to rotate at different speeds, a differential provides the necessary different wheel rotation when turning or when road conditions vary. However, the very design that allows for smooth cornering on paved roads can become a liability off-road In situations where one wheel loses traction, the standard differential sends the same torque to each wheel. When one of those wheels demands less torque to rotate – like when it is in the air or slipping on muddy ground – the other wheel will get the same reduced amount of torque. However, that reduced amount of torque is insufficient to move the vehicle forward and leaving you stuck.
To provide equal torque to both wheels on an axle you might utilize a locking differential. There are many types of locking differentials, and they are useful to get both wheels to assist The best time to use a locker to increase
traction is when traveling uphill or downhill in a straight line. If your vehicle is at any angle, the locker can make your scenario worse causing your vehicle to move off-track. Lockers are useful and have their place An alternative technique, brake throttle modulation can assist in circumstances where the vehicle loses traction due to cross-axle orientation, loss of traction to one wheel on the front or rear axle, or the vehicle needs to bump over an obstacle. This is counter intuitive to everything you have learned about driving on pavement When driving on pavement it is strongly recommended to use one foot for operating the gas and the brake. By taking your foot off the gas and then applying the brake you can reduce speed and brake more quickly. Additionally, brake throttle modulation is part of mechanical sympathy. This is true in part but can and will overheat the torque converter in an automatic when overused. Brake throttle modulation should only be used when necessary. When driving off-road we must control the speed into obstacles, rocks, and reduce as much damage and abuse to the vehicle to avoid mechanical failure. By understanding how the equipment works and how to best utilize it we can maintain the vehicle’s ability to get us to and from our pre-determined destinations.
Brake throttle modulation is completed by placing both feet at the pedals One foot controls the accelerator and the other foot controls the brake. The foot that controls the accelerator should typically hold the engine rpm just above torque converter lock up in an automatic vehicle, this would usually be around 1200 – 1500 rpm. The foot that is on the brake adjusts the amount of braking applied as necessary With practice one will know how much gas and how much brake should be applied to get through a particular obstacle
However, it is best to only adjust braking load while trying as far as possible to keep engine rpm constant with the accelerator.
Imagine you are approaching a cross axle portion of a trail. As you approach you will apply brake to provide resistance to the wheels. The accelerator is applied as you drive through the brakes The brake resistance applied to the wheels will require more torque to be sent to the wheels. The more brake pressure applied; the more torque given to the wheels The torque is sometimes enough to get the tire that would have not turned to turn and get you through an obstacle. Another application is approaching a step that you would climb up.
Approaching the obstacle, you would apply brake to control the ascent of the vehicle Controlling the braking up will assist with torque application. Utilizing this technique is a skill and takes practice to become proficient
Once you have perfected this skill your vehicle will perform better off road, be less prone to damage, and the ride will be more comfortable while traveling on the trail Vehicle manufacturers have different ways to assist with traction with electronic traction control systems utilizing ABS and the application of brake throttle modulation may interrupt those features. Understanding your features’ strengths and weaknesses are important skills to learn. Seek quality off-road driver’s training from an International 4-wheel Drive Trainer’s Association trainer near you.

THE FREEZE LADY BOOTH # 292
Enjoy the feeling of being free and carefree while enjoying the outdoors. One of our favorite activities is driving on a trail, surrounded by nature, and munching on freeze dried candy. It’s a simple, joyful experience that enhances my appreciation or the little things in life. So we brought some to share!
More than cracking a cold one, relaxing with a simple, crafted cocktail will bring a whole new vibe to your camp experience.
Picture this: you're nestled in your camp chair, the flames dancing merrily before you, casting shadows on the trees The scent of pine fills the air, mingling with the tantalizing aroma of your chosen libation. But it's not just about the drink – oh no, it's about the whole darn experience! You're swapping tall tales with your fellow campers, each story wilder and more outrageous than the last, and every sip of your cocktail is like a punctuation mark in the grand saga of your camping adventure It's moments like these that make you feel truly alive, like you're part of something bigger than yourself, something wild and untamed And as the stars twinkle overhead, you can't help but think, "Life sure is good."
The Overland Addict Recovery Room Lounge presented by Tourtop offers a unique and unforgettable experience that rivals the enjoyment of sipping cocktails at camp during the MOORE Expo This exclusive lounge provides a sanctuary for attendees to unwind, socialize, and indulge in expertly crafted cocktails amidst a cozy and inviting atmosphere. With its relaxed ambiance and attentive service, the Recovery Room Lounge offers a moment of respite from the hustle and bustle of the expo, allowing visitors to recharge and connect with fellow enthusiasts. It's a donot-miss part of the MOORE Expo, where attendees can enjoy the essence of camp camaraderie and relaxation
Cocktails while camping“it's not just about the drink – oh no, it's about the whole darn experience!”
A Moscow mule is a cocktail made with vodka, spicy ginger beer, and lime juice, garnished with a slice or wedge of lime It is a type of buck; therefore, sometimes called a vodka buck. The Moscow mule is popularly served in a copper mug, which takes on the cold temperature of the liquid.
Main alcohol: Vodka
Ingredients: 1 1/2 oz Vodka, 1/6 oz Lime juice, 4 oz Ginger beer
Preparation: Combine vodka and ginger beer in a copper mug or highball glass filled with ice. Add lime juice. Stir gently and garnish with a lime slice.
Served: On the rocks; poured over ice
Drinkware: Copper mug or highball glass Standard garnish: Lime slice
See all our Campfire Cocktails recipes on the MOORE Expo YouTube channel.
Most camping stoves work great some of the time None of them work very well, if at all, in windy, rainy, and snowing conditions unless they are shielded from the elements They are always susceptible to leaking fuel and the idiot who forgets to bring enough fuel The ultra-expensive high-output variety are really high-input fuel burners needing a few extra cans of fuel WindTamer Camp Stove Companion allows for alternative fuel, such as charcoal, to be used
Campfire cooking in firerestricted zones is irresponsible if not impossible Dutch oven cooking and baking in a fire zone and wet or windy weather is now a sure thing with WindTamer Camp Stove Companion and a reliable stove
My favorite stove is a 55-yearold Coleman 2 burner that no longer carries its top and sides New stoves can sell for $200 or more while there are many
thousands of good, reliable, and inexpensive vintage stoves to be found at yard sales, on eBay or Craigslist for a very low investment.
Being a seasoned wildland firefighter (Hotshot), I know that wind behaves much the way that water
flows in a river – taking the path of least resistance. Those supposed wind-block lids and wingy sides on camp stoves don’t block much at all They do redirect, to a degree, but wind passing over and around creates a vacuum in the leeward side sucking air away from the burners and pulling “blocked” wind downward and across the stovetop Anyone who has experienced a flame-out on their camp stove understands this
This novel new approach to the camping kitchen began by sharing my personal stove cover with other campers suffering through mealtime in high winds in the high desert and mountains of California Being an early riser by nature, I searched for a better way to make coffee before sunrise with temperatures in the 20s My earliest endeavor melted the half-inch layer of ice in the pot quickly enough but it also melted the knob on the coffee pot Soon enough, family campers around me asked that I make something that they could use
After successive design changes, followed up with trials by campers across the country, a fine product was developed that is flame-resistant, user-friendly, lightweight, and doubles as an oven The Nomex body melts at about 750 F All binding is militaryspec Nylon The hook and loop are also Nylon For reference, Nylon, Nomex, and Kevlar are in the same family of synthetic Polyamide textiles used in uniforms, autos, carpets, and many other products that must be strong, durable, and flame-resistant WindTamer works equally well in wind, rain and cold, and successfully enables baking in adverse campground conditions WindTamer helps keep the cost of camping down by reducing the amount of fuel needed to prepare nutritious meals in the campground. We offer two versions of WindTamer: The Family is taller and includes a warming shelf that will hold three 9-inch pans of food The Trucker is 4 5 inches, not as tall, and does not have a warming shelf A WindTamer Camp Stove Companion in your campground kitchen can mean the difference between a successful camping experience and a nightmare that many will be unwilling to risk again

Get ready to rev up your engines, gear up for adventure, and make memories that will last a lifetime at the Moore Expo's Power Sports Expo expansion I can't wait to share this unforgettable experience with you!
Overland travel is all about connecting with nature, right? Well, dirt bikes take it up a notch. No A/C, no plush seats – just you and the great outdoors. You feel the changes of the ground below you, breathe in the fresh air, feel the heat, and really become one with your surroundings. It's a connection with nature that is sometimes lost when you’re in the comfort of your own vehicle.
When you're out there in the middle of nowhere, self-sufficiency is the name of the game, and as you know, us overlanders LOVE to be self-sufficient! Riding motorcycles offroad adds a totally new meaning to this as you can’t carry loads of gear. You have to pack light and think critical on the gear you can bring with you This unlocks a totally new way of thinking and just might have you re-think how much you actually need the next time you pack your rig!
Overland travel isn't just a solo mission; it's a community affair. Off-road enthusiasts gather at rallies, expos, and trails to swap stories, talk
gear, and share tips The two-wheeled world is the same! It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and open your eyes to an all-new off road community.
Believe it or not, off-road motorcycles can be Earth's buddies too. When ridden responsibly –key word responsibly - they can leave a lighter footprint compared to their four-wheeled counterparts when sticking to designated trails and keeping the noise down (think Leave No Trace but on two wheels) Much like responsible overlanding, responsible riding ensures you enjoy nature's beauty without leaving a mess behind
In a nutshell dirt bikes aren't just vehicles; they're your partners in crime on the road less traveled. They open up new horizons, inject excitement, deepen your bond with nature, make you self-sufficient, connect you with a rad community, and can even contribute to lower impact on the environment. On your next overland trip, pack up a dirt bike, throw it on the back of your rig, set up the ultimate basecamp, and go explore! Once you feel familiar, maybe the next overland trip you’ll leave the rig at home

Road trips and vacations don’t have to be limited to either motor sports or silent sports In fact, a well-rounded adventure can seamlessly integrate both, offering a diverse and enriching experience for enthusiasts of all kinds. It is not unusual to see mountain bike racks on overland vehicles, or fishing gear in a toy hauler. ADV riders find room on their bikes for pack rafts, and paddleboarders hit the trail in thier Jeeps, looking for those remote, quiet lakes. There is no “us vs. them” in a world where so many interests cross over in the recreation space By strategically planning your itinerary and balancing your activities, you can enjoy the thrill of motor sports while also immersing yourself in the tranquility of silent sports along the way
So is there a secret to enjoying the best of both worlds? One approach is to designate specific portions of your journey for motor sports, where you can explore off-road trails, rugged terrain, and adrenaline-pumping adventures. Whether it's navigating challenging 4x4 routes, tearing through sandy dunes on an ATV, or conquering rocky terrain with a dirt bike, motor sports enthusiasts can satisfy their need for
speed and excitement during these segments. Conversely, interspersing these motor sports segments with periods dedicated to silent sports allows for a harmonious balance. Take breaks from the roar of engines to hike along scenic trails, paddle through serene waterways, or camp in remote wilderness areas where the only soundtrack is the rustle of leaves and the calls of wildlife. These moments of quietude not only provide a respite from the intensity of motor sports but also allow for deeper immersion in nature and a chance to appreciate the beauty of the landscapes you're traversing
Furthermore, embracing both motor and silent sports on an overland trip encourages a holistic appreciation for the natural world and its diverse offerings. From the exhilaration of conquering challenging terrain to the serenity of watching the sunset from a remote campsite, combining these experiences fosters a deeper connection with the environment and a richer understanding of the landscapes you encounter So, whether you're revving up your engine or slipping on your hiking boots, an overland adventure that
embraces both motor and silent sports promises an unforgettable journey filled with the boundless wonders of the great outdoors
Participating in both silent sports and motor sports can contribute to fostering understanding and cooperation between these two communities in several ways:
Shared Appreciation for Nature:
Both silent sports enthusiasts and motor sports enthusiasts share a love for the great outdoors and a mutual appreciation for the natural environment
Respect for Different Perspectives:
Experiencing both silent and motor sports helps participants to gain insights into the diverse ways people interact with nature.
Environmental Stewardship:
Through exposure to different outdoor activities, individuals from both communities can learn about responsible environmental practices and can collaborate on conservation initiatives and joint projects
Building Bridges through Events:
Events and festivals that feature a mix of silent and motor sports activities can bring together enthusiasts from both communities and provide opportunities for networking, sharing experiences, and fostering friendships based on a shared passion for outdoor recreation.
Educational Opportunities:
By participating in each other's activities, individuals from both communities can learn new skills and broaden their horizons.
By finding common ground, individuals from both groups can contribute to a more sustainable outdoor recreation culture.

As an adventurer, what was your motivation to go? Was it to get out and explore this country? To go see things that the normal crowds can’t? Do you like to disperse camp? Watch that sunrise over a faraway mountain as you have that first sip of coffee in the morning while that stream next to you babbles and steams in the dawn?
All across the west, public roads, trails and dispersed camping areas are being closed to vehicle traffic In California, your favorite areas to recreate are being fast-tracked to become solar farms Plans to close areas of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming are just the beginning.
“Ensuring recreational access to public lands in the western United States is a critical endeavor that requires collective effort and support,” says the Blue Ribbon Coalition While it may be easy to ignore closures in western states, the fact is that these restrictions and closures are happening all over the country and we need to be vigilant and involved. When the Pipeline 4x4 Challenge Trail, a popular off-road trail in Wisconsin, was closed, a local ranger said that they did not hear a peep or detect any backlash after the closure He said, the squeaky wheel gets the grease and were surprised that the closure was met with silence Paying attention and getting a discourse going with local authorities is a good start to preserving access to our favorite pastimes. They need to hear the voices of all user groups Joining organizations like the BRC, Share Trails, and American Adventurist can help, too.
Blue Ribbon Coalition is one of the best organized and most funded groups currently pushing back against these fruitless lawsuits. They have won many court battles keeping your access to your lands open for you and others to enjoy! They are not an anti environmental group, but rather an organization focused on actual, proper land management that allows for the protections needed while letting people enjoy their lands
It is true that this group does have an off-road focus, but are very aware and supportive of the fact that YOU, the dispersed camper, are actually the group that loses the most in these battles!
I encourage you to take a look and if you like having places to camp without being in an established campsite piled on top of each other, consider a membership in this great organization and spread the word!
If we do not stand up to these anti-access extremist groups before long you will only be able to visit places landscaped and polished that the government tells you to go to…
