country to seek religious freedom in Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay, and later in other New England colonies. The Pilgrims sought to separate themselves from England. The Puritans sought to create a godly society that would serve as a model for other Anglicans. The stability of New England society and the land available in the region eventually drew other settlers as well. Adventurism: Early seventeenth-century settlements also attracted adventurers. Many of the men who came to Jamestown initially came for neither economic nor religious reasons, but to make a quick profit from valuable commodities such as those in the Spanish colonies. These young men were sorely disappointed to find no gold, and the men fared poorly in their new environment.
