FROM THE PRESIDENT JOHN J. SBREGA, PH. D. Time-Talent-Treasure to support our noble mission. We are all very grateful. They have seen the difference that BCC makes across our region (“changing lives…”), and they feel confident that BCC will make effective use of their contributions, fiscal or in-kind, as a prudent steward. The pages of this report represent validation of this observation. Moreover, it is a myth that only extremely large donations will make a difference. Quite the contrary! Every donation, no matter how large or small – and in-kind as well as fiscal – matters. Every contribution of Time-Talent-Treasure is
Dear Colleagues in Learning: Our BCC Foundation constitutes a major factor in the success of our great institution. Throughout my long career, I have kept track of the characteristics of nationally prominent community colleges. Of course, an outstanding faculty, dedicated staff, and unwavering commitment to the institutional mission of Student Success, access (Open Door), and opportunity are common denominators. In addition, I have observed that a truly enthusiastic and effective Foundation Board and Office of Resource Development separate the national leaders into the highest echelons. This support, both financial and spiritual, represents a powerful galvanizing force for an educational institution. Enhanced human and physical resources, reinforced current practices, path-breaking new initiatives, strategic investments, and increased flexibility stem from this Foundation wellspring. Accordingly, the institutions that marshal energetic, efficacious, and influential Foundation Boards are likely to be high-performing. Simply put, latitude and flexibility and capacity can transform an institution. We have witnessed this process at BCC, where the growing assets of the BCC Foundation have helped our institution reach higher levels of service and achievement. For example, our Attleboro Center would most probably not exist were it not for the spectacular support of our BCC Foundation. Also, planning to bolster our Academic Support services in New Bedford would be sharply curtailed without generous donations to our Foundation. Our BCC Family and people throughout our expansive service area have voted with their 2
Your generosity sets BCC apart precious. External grant organizations always inquire about the percentage of employees, Trustees, Foundation Board members, and Alumni who contribute to the Foundation – not the amount of dollars. Their reasoning flows directly from the question: Why are you asking for help from us when your own Family does not provide help? Thus, it is important to give something rather than to abstain in the false belief that you can’t afford a large donation. The watershed moment for your decision really should stem from your conviction to stand behind the BCC Mission, whatever your capacity, not that there is some expected (and expansive) donation level you must meet to make it worthwhile. Please help us to continue serving the community and changing lives. Our BCC Foundation needs your support. Thank you. Cheers!

Paul Hogan ’09
– igniting relationships for the future Paul Hogan has been a firefighter with the Norwood Fire Department for nine years and earned his associate’s degree in 2009. Paul’s wife, Christine, is a Nursing student at BCC, and they have three children. As a student, Paul received three BCC Foundation scholarships, and he graduated with honors in the Fire Science Program. He has since earned a bachelor’s degree in fire science from Columbia Southern University, attended bomb school in New Mexico, and is a certified Hazmat Technician waiting to get on the Massachusetts State Hazmat Team. Hogan hopes to move up and become a fire lieutenant as well as an instructor at BCC. Throughout his time at BCC, he found “relationships” the key to his success. With instruction from experienced chiefs and officers at BCC, Paul expanded his knowledge of building construction, fire ground safety, fire prevention, and water hydraulics, just to name a few. “My education at BCC was all about building relationships,” said Paul. “What I have learned strengthened my relationship with other firefighters; keeping us all safer. To improve the team, you have to improve yourself first.” Paul added, “I challenge you to start a relationship with BCC, just as I have. No one can do it for you, but these relationships will be life changing, and I know that BCC is where it can start for you”.

– able to pursue her dream
Sharon Riendeau was in the corporate world for more than 20 years when she was laid off in March 2011. Soon after the layoff, Sharon enrolled in the Certified Nursing Assistant program at Bristol Community College. The experiences she had reignited a passion that has long been in her heart – to become a registered nurse. Thanks to scholarship support from the BCC Foundation, she started on the road to becoming a registered nurse this fall. “As a single mother of three, with a mortgage and other financial responsibilities, I need assistance to make my new goal a reality,” said Sharon. Teaching has also always been a passion of Sharon's, and it was her career before having children. Long term, she hopes to earn the credentials to teach future generations of nurses. The Foundation’s support is helping to make Sharon's dream of becoming a nurse a reality.

The Bristol Community College Foundation was established to raise private funds to help support Bristol Community College. It helps the College to obtain financial support to enhance the ability of the College to meet the lifelong educational needs of the growing and changing community it serves. The Bristol Community College Foundation was founded in 1980 as a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing private support for the students and academic resources of Bristol Community College. Funds raised by the Foundation provide scholarships, interest-free emergency student loans, grants for special academic programs and equipment, and restricted funds for special College needs. The Foundation collaborates with the College to apply for grant funding for major projects from other foundations, corporations, and community organizations. In addition, the Foundation is building endowment funds to provide ongoing support for the future. The business of the Foundation is conducted by a 20-member volunteer Board of Directors. Members on the Board are from a wide variety of backgrounds from towns and cities throughout southeastern Massachusetts and R hode Island.
