Home Sweet Home... Welcome students, faculty, parents and friends to our new facility.

A View From the executivE , Director s office... On September 7th, I had the honor and pleasure of being a part of the ribbon cutting ceremony that officially opened the new facilities for Montgomery Academy. I had an opportunity to introduce J. Anthony Manger, Esq. who is the Montgomery Academy Board of Trustees President. During my speech I touched upon a few traits shared by every member of our Board of Trustees. Beyond an expertise in their individual professions, they each serve on the Board of Trustees receiving no financial gain. They each share in a passion for the education of our students, working tirelessly behind the scenes, and asking for little if any recognition. As a professional educator I am constantly amazed at how they continue to take on such important responsibilities. Each trustee has a deep desire to keep our school safe while maintaining a truly friendly environment.

FA L L

And while they do not ask for a “thank you” or a spotlight, I would like to use this space to personally thank each of our trustees. Without each individual, our group could never be greater, so much greater, than the sum of its parts. To each I say a sincere and humble “Thank You”, and I hope that if any of you reading this article see these individuals you take a moment to express your gratitude as well.

Like so many children with special needs, Elizabeth found her voice through the arts. In Elizabeth's case it was through the art of writing poetry. We at Montgomery Academy have seen this so many times in so many different ways. Many of our children participate in performing, musical and visual arts. That is why the arts are so important here. Some students find confidence, some social acceptance, some self identity, some find a strategy to manage difficulties and stress, and some students even find their voice. Elizabeth's very special talent has allowed her to find her voice and to communicate who she really is behind the veil of autism. Along with her mother, Virginia, Elizabeth has published a book filled with her poems and an inside look at her very inspiring journey. 2011

, MONTGOMERY S TRANSITION AND NEW HOME... Montgomery Academy began serving students with diverse abilities in 1970 known then as the North Jersey Child Development Center. The school was located in Ridgewood, NJ initially serving twenty-two students. During the 1970s and 1980s as the school and program grew, the leadership team relocated the facility to Cedar Knolls, NJ to more effectively serve special needs students. A theme of continued growth and an evolving specials needs based curriculum were the catalysts for the next two facility relocations; Mt. Saint John’s in Gladstone, NJ and now today in Basking Ridge, NJ. Several years ago, Montgomery’s leadership team launched a series of studies to evaluate options for relocating the Academy to ensure continued growth of the program, while minimizing “change” for the students and faculty. During the summer of 2010 these studies resulted in identifying an office building in Basking Ridge, NJ. FA L L

The project focused on the renovation of approximately 30,000 square feet of space on two levels. Those renovations resulted in the creation of 18 classrooms, several special purpose rooms, (i.e. multipurpose room, art room, science room, music room, wood shop, project room and a life skills room) and administration offices. DSI Construction and their subcontractors completed the project on time and within budget, a testament of their commitment to Montgomery Academy and ensuring the smooth transition for our students and faculty.

2011

Our new facility gives us the opportunity to expand to meet the needs of our students as the 21st century unfolds. Our graduates face an increasingly competitive job market and we have an obligation to prepare them for their future. Whether they choose college, trade school, or opt to enter the job market right after high school, we are committed to giving our students every possible tool in preparing them for their future success. While the construction/relocation project is completed the work to continue to enhance the Academy and our special needs program has once again started. This new location will afford an environment supporting the continuous growth of all aspects of Montgomery’s program, thus inspiring our students to learn in an ideal setting or simply said, “Montgomery Academy, where you can be yourself”.

It is our belief that all students benefit from their involvement in the various components of school life at Montgomery Academy. We value the philosophy of educating the whole person. In addition to following New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Standards and Core Standards in Language Arts and Math, students are offered the opportunity to explore career and lifelong learning options. Especially exciting this year is the opportunity of participating in various physical education activities at our next door neighbor - The Somerset Hills YMCA.

This new feamain menu bar of the homepage, will enable parents to easily access information about their child’s classes. Montgomery Academy is very excited about the prospect of being able to keep parents regularly informed about what is happening in their child’s classes in an easy-to-use and modern format. Keeping parents informed and involved in their child’s education is one of the most important contributing factors to a student’s success. We feel that this new feature will greatly add to the already open communication shared between our teachers and our parents. Montgomery Academy has always been committed to providing our students with the most up-to-date and innovative approaches to teaching and we feel that the addition of Classes greatly supports this philosophy. We hope that both parents and students take the time to utilize this new feature on our website and help pave the way to a successful first year in our new building.
